Long ride rewarded

Roof goes on machinery club

Path for Paparoa kids

p John and Joyce Crisp arrived in Auckland on a cruise from Australia but didn’t let John’s recent heart bypass and the 90 kilometres to Matakohe stand in the way of a visit to The Kauri Museum. “We took a taxi,” said Joyce. “We had a museum book and showed the driver. We were a bit surprised how far it was, but it was well worth it.”

p Workers at the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club were hard at work last week putting up the roof on the extension to its premises at Dargaville’s Harding Park. The extension will substantially increase the amount of display space for the club’s collection of old tractors, bulldozers and excavators. Club president Bill Fitness says work on the project is on schedule. It is due to be officially opened at a Crank-Up Day to be held in September or October.

p Children from Room 3 at Paparoa School have been learning how to make a path. It was all part of the school’s inventions programme. Bruce and Arron Lydiard came to the school and showed the children the process of mixing and laying concrete. Arron Lydiard works for Wharehine and the children marvelled at the workings of his concrete truck.

Ruawai swimmer enjoys the big timeu by Colin Patterson

Ruawai youngster Temepara Bristow has been making quite a splash in the swimming world.

Last month the 10-year-old finished in the top 10 in three events in the New Zealand Junior Swimming Championships in Wellington’s Kilbirnie Pool.

Temepara says she got into swimming following in the footsteps of her aunt who was an avid swimmer. Starting when she was five, Temepara soon became so fast that at Ruawai School she had to swim against the boys.

She joined Dargaville Splash Club and now trains three times a week at the

p Young swimmer Temepara Bristow takes time out after an intense training session

Kauri Coast Pool in Dargaville. Temepara acknowledges the support of her parents who drive her to her training sessions with her coach Kara Hutchinson.

Temepara says her training can be pretty intense. “I swim 1,800 metres each evening. Sometimes I do 2,000.”

To get into the New Zealand championships she had to swim qualifying times all over Northland.

While it was not her first trip to Wellington, Temepara admitted she was nervous before the championships.

“My coach told me to pace myself. In the 200, go steady for the first 100 and then sprint. In the 50 it’s fast all the way.”

Her strategy earned her 8th place in the 200 metres backstroke, 7th in the 50 metres freestyle and 9th in 50 metres backstroke.

With success like that, some in the swimming world say Temepara is headed for big and better things. “People have said I have the potential to qualify for the Olympics. But I’d just like to do the Commonwealth Games and get somewhere in the swimming.”

The next event on her schedule is her school swimming sports. “I’ll then take a break and play netball.” ¢

“It won’t cure him,” says Mr Carter. “But it will let him live a normal life.”

He says surgeons will cut into vertebrae in Tyler’s back with the aim of interrupting the nerve signals from his brain that cause his muscles to go spastic.

But Mrs Schutz needs to raise $89,000 to pay for the operation and their five-week stay in St Louis, Missouri.

Mr Carter was a volunteer with the Dargaville Fire Brigade for 25 years and is a life member of the brigade. He now performs a similar role for St John Ambulance, responding to car crashes and other medical emergencies around Dargaville. Heather has worked at Dargaville Hospital for 40 years.

“Doug and Heather have supported the community for many years,” says the brigade’s chief fire officer Jeff Palmer. “It’s time the community supported them.”

The brigade is selling tickets for a two-course dinner to be held at the fire station on Friday March 28. The event is limited to 80 tickets selling for $20. If you would like tickets call 021 0286 2447 or email [email protected].

Cyclone Lusi has little impactu by Colin Patterson

The passage of Cyclone Lusi over the weekend appears to have made little difference to parched pastures in the Northern Wairoa.

The rainfall it produced was also insufficient to persuade the Kaipara District Council to drop water restrictions in Dargaville and Baylys Beach.

According to Northland Regional Council figures, while Kaeo and Kaikohe received about 80mm of rain, Dargaville got just 17mm.

Corin Schick who farms at Aoroa just south of Dargaville says the weekend rain has made almost no difference to his pastures. “We’re expecting some growth. But there was so much wind, a lot of the water evaporated quickly.” His rainfall gauge registered 22mm. “It’s better than nothing.”

Alison Allen, who farms near Tangowahine with her husband Roger, says her rain gauge recorded 35mm. “It’s made a small difference. But we need some follow-up rain.”

Kaipara District Council spokeswoman Barbara Ware says the rain caused the level of the Kaihu River — the source of Dargaville’s drinking water to rise. “But it will subside in two or three days.”

She says water restrictions put in place for Dargaville and Baylys Beach a month ago remain in place. While those restrictions have led to a slight reduction in consumption, she says consumers need to do more to save water.

While Cyclone Lusi led to the cancellation of most sport and outdoor activities in the Northern Wairoa, it appears to have had little other impact.

Only occasional power outages were reported, with 200 people in Tangiteroria losing power for up to 10 hours, while 381 in Kaiwaka lost power. However their service was restored within an hour.

Northpower spokesperson Steve Macmillan says most outages were caused by trees hitting power lines.

Dargaville Volunteer Fire Brigade had only one weather-related callout — to remove a tree blocking Murrays Rd on the way to Kaikohe.

MetService forecasts fine weather through to Friday with showers forecast from then until the middle of next week.

An afternoon of unforgettable musicu by Joanne Speechly

An Afternoon of Music with Kevin Friedrich and Friends returns to Dargaville Museum for the sixth consecutive year this month, following a sell-out crowd last year.

World renowned accordionist Kevin Friedrich says the concert is his way of giving back.

“The concert is a thank you to the community, for their continued support over the years and it also provides an opportunity for young musicians to perform during an afternoon of shared music, fun and friendship.”

Kevin will be playing a variety of pieces and, with Pippa Howes, will perform an accordion and flute world premiere by Auckland composer Gary Daverne. Several years ago, Gary wrote Gem of the Kaipara in honour of the late Jenny Cocurullo.

Audiences will also be treated to a performance on the Kauri accordion, which Kevin debuted at last year’s concert. The unique instrument is one of only three individually crafted accordions commissioned by Kevin and made at

the Ikaalinen College of Crafts and Design in Finland by traditional artisan Aaro Luukinen.

An Afternoon of Music will feature an eclectic and memorable mix of ukulele, flute, classical guitar, harmonica, vocalists and piano. A shared afternoon tea is included and the concert will conclude with a traditional jam session and sing-a-long.

Kevin returns to the Kaipara for An Afternoon of Music from his New York base, where he works as a fulltime musician and flight attendant.

He is also ambassador for the Confédération Internationale des Accordéonistes (CIA) — an umbrella organisation for national accordion associations — and has recently returned from their winter congress and general assembly in Sarajevo. ¢

Action on harbour healthu by Paul Campbell

The Kaipara Harbour has come a step closer to better health with a decision to install state-of-the art monitoring equipment to assess water quality.

Sports day postponedThe Donnellys Crossing Sports and Picnic Day has been put off because of expected bad weather last weekend.

The event was to be held on Saturday March 15. But the impending arrival of Tropical Cyclone Lusi accompanied by strong winds

and heavy rain led organisers to pull the plug. Michele Cobb, one of the organisers, says the event will now go ahead this Saturday, March 22.

Niwa, Auckland Council and the Northland Regional Council researchers will establish three Estuarine Monitoring Systems, or EMS, at Tikonui Wharf near Ruawai, and at two sites in the harbour’s south, near Hoteo.

The Tikonui station will measure the water quality of the Wairoa system — the largest freshwater inflow to the harbour blamed for much of the flow of fine sediments into the waterway.

The stations will measure water quality in the harbour and tidal creeks, particularly water clarity which is affected by fine sediment, but also by organic matter and phytoplankton.

Niwa’s coastal scientist co-ordinating the project, Andrew Swales, said there was increasing appreciation that fine sediments have major ecological impacts, including preventing light from reaching important ecosystems, such as seagrass, which in turn affected food supply for some fish species and sea birds. The project which is funded by

central and regional government, would also see continuous measurement of water temperature, salinity, tidal height, water currents and waves.

The stations will operate continuously, powered by solar panels, with remote stations monitoring each installation.

The data will be used by council staff and Niwa researchers and made publicly available on Auckland Council’s website.

It can also be used to check weather conditions on the water.

“These stations comprise state-of-the-art measuring instruments that will give us the most accurate information possible.” said Mr Swales, adding that the programme will provide important data on big weather events which contribute to sedimentation.

Niwa principal scientist, Dr Rob Davies-Colley, said that the stations were a crucial part of studies into fine sediment and other pollutants that affect Kaipara Harbour but findings were also expected to have national significance. ¢

Market a massive hit in Maungaturotou by Joanne Speechly

Maungaturoto Market, held at the Centennial Hall on the first Friday of every month, will celebrate their first birthday in April and it has been a year of success and growth.

“It’s fantastic,” says organiser Terri Donaldson. “I took a survey last week and the stallholders are happy, the customers are over the moon with the products available.

“The produce is fresh and affordable and we really have a great selection. People also like the Friday evenings, which means that we are not clashing with other markets and that’s the idea.

“Having the market inside the hall is a real advantage as it can go ahead in any weather. We also work really hard to serve the stallholders and the good mood flows on to customers.”

The market is organised by a sub committee of the Maungaturoto Resident’s Association and averages about 35 stall holders each month. Terri says the market is continually growing and evolving and new stallholders and products are always welcome. “I organise the market alongside Jodi Hawken and Guy Smith, with plenty of support from the rest of the Resident’s Association, our families and other people in the community. It’s a real community-

based endeavour, there is no one person in charge — it’s a good collective group and we all work together and help each other out.”

Maungaturoto Markets offers including fresh locally grown produce, arts and crafts, quality second-hand goods and antiques, seafood, olive oil, clothing, cosmetics and plants.

People can also expect spot prizes and special festivities to mark the birthday celebrations in April. ¢

Suicide in the spotlightu by Colin Patterson

Suicide is far from painless, a public meeting on the subject was told last week.

The meeting in Dargaville, was an initiative of Kaipara District Council staff member Cerise Selkirk, although she is keen to emphasise it was not a council event. However Cerise acknowledges help from KDC community engagement officer Darlene Lang in promoting it.”

“I wanted to raise awareness of suicide. Many people don’t to talk about it.”

She says more than 50 people turned up last Tuesday evening and there was standing room only in the meeting room.

Ms Selkirk gave her personal story about suicide. “In 2012 my best friend committed suicide. It happened out of the blue. I blame myself for not being there when she needed us most.”

Her story encouraged others to come forward with their experiences. Those stories shared similar themes of shock and guilt. “It was quite an emotional meeting,” says Cerise. The event attracted social workers, teachers, counsellors and Maori social service providers. There were also representatives from Raid, a group from Whangarei that helps young people thinking of suicide.

Cerise says one counsellor working with five-year-olds says they already know what suicide is and some were even considering it. The meeting formed a committee of young people — including one Dargaville High School student — to plan future activities.

She says the group aims to help those affected by suicide and reach those thinking of it and try to prevent them from going ahead.

Providing support within our communityu by Joanne Speechly

In December 2000, a group of concerned individuals, organisation representatives and community leaders from throughout the Kaipara region met to discuss the damage that is caused by abuse and consider ways in which the issue may be addressed. From this initial meeting, Kaipara Abuse Prevention (KAP) was formed.

KAP is an incorporated society, managed by a governance group and supported by a network of dedicated volunteers. Their aim is to raise awareness around the issue of abuse, provide preventative support services and advocacy for families and support those who provide these services.

“It is so important that these services are available within the local community and we are constantly lobbying to ensure that it remains this way, otherwise we’ll lose our services to Whangarei but we are fortunate to have a very strong governing body,” says KAP administrator, Daff Adams.

KAP currently holds three Ministry of Social Development contracts — SAGES, SKIP, and Strengthening Families.

SAGES is a community-based mentoring programme that taps into the life experiences and knowledge

of older New Zealanders to help families and individuals in their community.

SKIP stands for Strategies for Kids, Information for Parents and is a social change programme, which supports parents of babies and pre-schoolers to be the best parents they can be.

Strengthening Families aims to assist people in getting the best support for their family to thrive and to help ensure their safety and wellbeing.

“KAP collaborates with other organisations, so people are sometimes referred to us or they can self refer. We also get a lot of ‘walk ins’ and that’s fine, we’ll have a chat and work out which one of our services would be right for each individual or family.” ¢

SPOTLIGHT ON MangawhaiA festive showcase weekendThe Mangawhai Walking Weekend over March 29 and 30 will be much more than a stroll in the country, according to the organisers.

“It’s a chance to explore as well as a festival to showcase the region with walks along golden beaches, clifftops, through native bush, farms, experiencing local history, food and other hidden treasures,” says organiser,Trish Whyte.

“Every walk has a story, and they range from easy graded to tougher challenges with spectacular vistas to our great coastline.

“The Troubadour Walk, created as a community walk on Friday afternoon is fun for the entire family, with storytelling, singing, music and much magic as the Troubadours entertain as you amble along the beautiful estuary track.”

The Mangawhai Wine and Food Festival was an idea created by the Mangawhai Walking Weekend to provide a fun and a relaxing finish to the day and an opportunity to showcase local food and wine producers.

“Now eight years on, this event has been embraced by both the walkers

Works ‘with panache’ Elena Nikolaeva will be featured on the Mangawhai weekend, displaying a diverse range of work which is sought after.

Elena studied at the University of Architecture, design and fine arts in her native city of Ekaterinburg in Russia.

She continues to experiment with dif ferent media, pigments, textures and materials. Over the last couple of years Elena has been working with metal sculptures made out of Grandmas throw away kitchenalia, drift wood and all sorts of mechanical parts and pieces.

These unusual quirky pieces are put together with ‘panache’ and are a lot of fun.

Elena has a wide repertoire of artistic talents from acrylics to mixed media and beyond.

She holds numerous workshops throughout the year for adults who want to learn the language of ‘magical illusion in the visual arts’.

Dining GuideBeer festival comes to Dargavilleu by Joanne Speechly

Set aside some time between Friday, March 21 and Sunday, March 23 and head on out to Aratapu Tavern’s Bavarian Beer Festival.

Better still, don your lederhosen, dirndl and Bavarian Tracht — in other words, dress like a German — and you could be in line for a prize while you enjoy your speciality beer and sauerkraut and German sounds.

“This is our first German beer fest and the reason we are having it in March is because, weather-wise, March in New Zealand is the equivalent of October in Germany,” says proprietor, Donice Morris.

“Plus it’s the end of the summer, so it’s better weather all-round.

“We’ll have ten speciality draught beers, available in steins or handles, German music by Tom Maine and traditional German food including potato pancakes, wiener schnitzel, apple strudel and locally butchered bratwurst sausages, served on long

buns with sauerkraut made in our kitchen.

“It’s certainly going to be a tasty weekend.”

The German Oktoberfest is held annually in Munich, Bavaria and is an important part of Bavarian culture. It’s origins lie in the October 1810 marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese.

The citizens of Munich were invited to attend festivities held on the fields in front of the city gates and the fields were named Theresienwiese — Theresa’s meadow — in honour of the Crown Princess. The abbreviated term “Wiesn” is another name for Oktoberfest.

“Throughout the weekend, there will be specials, silly costumes, prizes and basically, we’re going to have a party! It will be fun.” ¢

Dining GuideA gourmet theatrical treatu by Andy Bryenton

It’s the recipe for a sophisticated night out in one of the world’s entertainment capitals — decadent cocktails, artfully prepared canapés and a revue of famous tunes to set your toes tapping.

We’re talking showstoppers from Wicked, from Les Mis, and from composers like Adele and Nick Cave, matched up with cuba libres and mojitos while candles flicker around a cluster of round-topped tables. But this isn’t the dance card at the Dunes in Vegas or some up-market nightspot off Broadway. It’s the latest concept brought to life by the volunteer troubadours at the Dargaville Little Theatre, and it’s already causing quite a stir in the riverside town.

Anna Cutts directs the action as a series of musical vignettes play out on stage, bringing life to an eclectic mix of songs. Some come from the tradition of musical theatre, some are personal favourites of the performers, and others are chart-topping hits given a theatrical twist which may prove unexpected.

At the same time, the traditional layout of the theatre has been completely redesigned, allowing tables to replace the regular seating arrangement. This means that cocktail waiters and waitresses can ply their trade amid the patrons, dispensing artfully mixed drinks and a selection of canapés while the show unfolds. It’s a brand new experiment for the Little Theatre ensemble, and its success may pave the way for more ‘dinner theatre’ productions here in Dargaville.

With a cast of talented volunteer actors, who have chosen their own favourite songs to dramatise and perform, ‘A Little Bit Musical’ raises the curtain for the first time in early April. Hard hours of practice, both singing, dancing and rehearsing lines and choreography will come together in a spectacular of a kind which this town has never seen before — and the cast and crew guarantee that the music and theatre will be just as tasty as the food and drinks on offer. A stunning night out, without the airfare to Las Vegas. ¢

p The cast of ‘A Little Bit Musical’ are putting in the hours to craft a masterful musical showcase this April

At Northland’s Field Days recently the battle lines were clearly apparent — in one camp, the trusty and time-honoured ATV quad bike, and in the other, the rising force of the side-by-side UTV. Both have their unique points. Both are designed to tackle tough off-road terrain, and pack in a load of men, machinery and tools for all kinds of jobs around the farm.

It’s an engineering argument which Polaris have been listening to closely. Their Sportsman quad bikes and Ranger UTVs both sell well here, and recent visits by Polaris designers to these shores have given rise to the Ranger 570 HD — a tougher side-by-side for agricultural use. But the boys in the Polaris backroom haven’t stopped there. They have developed new machines to

Built for a hard day’s workThere’s a war on for the attention of Kiwi farmers, and it’s one which takes no prisoners.

bridge the gap, starting with the single-seater, fully roll caged Ace, and now following this up with the first quad bike designed from the ground up for New Zealand and Australian demands.

Like our other unique antipodean auto it’s called the Ute. But this is no big flat decked truck. The Polaris Ute begins with the template of a Sportsman ATV quad, then beefs it up to handle the hard knocks of farming life. Independent suspension all round improves handling, while a wide, balanced stance keeps the centre of gravity manageable, even with the addition of a large tipping rear tray.

The Ute features advanced engine and gearbox management systems which kick into all-wheel drive when it’s needed, and also allow for a hill descent mode like that seen on bigger ‘cousins’ like the Land Rover Discovery. Even fully laden (with an impressive 550kg towing weight and 180kg in the tipper) the Ute can handle steep surfaces safely. Even

better, this new breed of ATV comes with the popular, powerful engine from the Ranger 570 HD, transplanted in to offer serious grunt.

The Ranger itself is no slouch, so expect torque and pickup aplenty when the Ute’s throttle is given a nudge! If the Ace was Polaris Industry’s way of bridging the gap from UTVs like their powerful RZR down to the size of a quad, the Ute is their way of pushing the tried and true quad bike formula up into the middle ground — a great option for farmers who want the safety and power of a side-by-side but who don’t necessarily have passengers to take with them on every job.

With heightened awareness of safety on farms, the addition of SUV-style traction and hill descent systems, combined with the added functionality of a tipping deck and maximum towing power may make the Ute a potent combination for farm owners looking to gear up their sharemilkers as well. ¢

Heavy-duty generosityWe all know that having a current WOF is crucial — both for legality and for safety. But there’s another good reason to have your vehicle checked out by Dargaville Diesel Specialists, and it’s one which the whole family can get their teeth into.

In a bid to reach out to a wider range of customers, Rod from Dargaville Diesel (who, despite the name of his business, feels just as ‘at home’ under the hood of a petrol car as he does with a huge load-hauling truck or bus) has introduced

a novel incentive programme. His WOF customers all go into a monthly draw to win a hamper of groceries, and this month the inaugural winner was Rebecca Yeabsley, pictured here receiving the big box of goodies from Rod himself.

Meet big Red’s big brotheru by Andy Bryenton

Honda’s big Red UTV was the side-by-side off roader of choice for many farmers here in New Zealand — not least because farmers have come to trust the engineering and know-how of the machines with the wing emblem on the fuel tank.

But alas, times change, and the Big Red is no more. What we have instead is a brand new UTV, designed and built from the ground up to be a complete evolution.

Dargaville Honda have had two of the 700cc Pioneers out with customers for some time now, and it’s fair to say that they haven’t been gentle with them. Weeks of hard knocks in dry, dusty conditions have taxed their cooling systems and rutted ground has mauled their suspension. But are both of our anonymous test-drivers sick of piloting Pioneers yet? No way.

Both of the fellows who have given us feedback on real-life field trials of the Pioneer know their stuff — working with quads and UTVs from the paddock to the beach and beyond. Neither has pulled any punches, and both extol the sheer toughness of Honda’s platform, citing great ground clearance, ample

p The Honda Pioneer four-seater

torque and a solid, stable ride as big factors in the Pioneer’s favour.

Our first correspondent has come up to the Pioneer from its predecessor, and he states that overall performance is right up, with advances across the board in handling, load, ride, and safety. A big fishing torpedo system is a regular load, which the Pioneer handles well over uneven sand.

Safety is a key concern of Honda’s

second local driver, who says that this machine is a safer way to get around the farm. A tough roll cage, automobile-style automatic transmission and responsive braking all add to the smart chassis design to provide a safer platform to work from. At a time when on-farm, off-

road accidents are once again in the news, many farmers want to move up to a side-by-side machine. To pack in more, lug more, do more and go further, the Honda Pioneer comes with proven Honda technology — and now with a big local seal of approval. ¢

Local marae turns 100u by Joanne Speechly

This April, Te Houhanga Marae will celebrate 100 years since its wharenui was opened on Station Road in Dargaville. Bearing the name Rahiri, it was the first carved meeting house to be built in Northland since pre-European times.

The centennial celebrations are set for April 25 to 27 and will coincide with ANZAC Day. The activities will commence on Friday with a memorial service and blessing of the newly erected flagpole.

A Whanau Fun Festival and Community Open Day will follow, providing an opportunity for the whole community to participate in this milestone event. The open day will include a talent show, Te Houhanga’s Got Talent hosted by Jamie Toko.

“This is an event for everyone,” says Maria Parore Larsen. “Our focus is two-way — we are celebrating whanau and also acknowledging our part in the community.

“There are many people who have a long association with the marae and have helped us in many ways and we want them to feel they can be a part of the centennial weekend.”

Te Houhanga marae centennial committee member Crystal Paniora says that the planning and preparation has been exciting, with many whanau members travelling from throughout

the country to help out. Many more will be returning from overseas for the centennial and she says their sense of pride has been renewed.

Stallholders are still being sought for the fun day. For further information people can contact Maria on 09 439 8251. ¢

Big success for Allie and Danielleu by Joanne Speechly

Big River FM interns Allie Dinnage and Danielle Guise have spent the last three months honing their broadcasting skills and now their hard work has been recognised by More FM Whangarei.

Although the two will continue work at Big River FM during the week, they have both landed contracts with More FM.

“This is a really positive move and they have both worked hard,” says station manager, Anaru Tana. “Allie struggled a little initially but with persistence and coaching, she has gained confidence and ability.

“Allie and Danielle’s internship with Big River FM actually lasts until June but I think it’s unlikely that they will see out those three months, as I believe they will both secure employment before that time.”

Twenty year old Danielle is joining More FM’s busy promotional team.

“I definitely want to continue in radio and ideally I would like find an announcing job but I’m also keen to do promotions.”

Nineteen year old Allie hosted her

first Saturday afternoon show last weekend and she is also assisting the promotions team.

“I’m really interested in getting into radio production and voicing long term but announcing is growing on me.”

Over the last four years, 30 young NZ School of Radio Tauranga graduates have completed their internships through Dargaville’s community radio station, Big River FM. ¢

“They did a great job, and I was very impressed. Munns Flooring Xtra carpeted our new home throughout, including stairs, bedrooms and large areas. Lorraine was very helpful with samples and advice and Gerrard and his team were very good too. He came and explained the whole process when he gave us the measure and quote, and when they came to install they fit in with our schedule. The results look stunning. They even had some of the larger ‘off cuts’ made into mats for us free of charge! That’s going beyond all expectations. If I ever need flooring work done again, I’ll be right down to see them.”

p Fans of animated movie ‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs’ might think that manic inventor Flint’s machine has become a reality when they scope the size of this epic pumpkin. It’s at Dargaville’s Empire Liquor Centre, where canny vege-speculators can make a two dollar donation to guess its weight. All the funds go to the volunteer fire brigade, while the nearest guess will bag the lucky winner a swag of goodies.

A weighty pumpkin questionVision of the OwlGrey Power will welcome the Leader of the Conservative Party, Colin Craig, at it’s next meeting on Friday 21st March.

Grey Power members and the public are invited to come along to the Methodist Church Hall at 1.00pm to hear what Colin is offering New Zealand if he is elected to Parliament.

Grey Power intends to invite other political parties to come to Dargaville to tell us all what they offer in the 2014 elections.

Grey Power is here to benefit all New Zealanders especially those over 50 years old and have ‘grey hair’. There is no age limit to join Kaipara Grey Power.

Grey Power’s Aims and Objectives are:To advance, support and protect the welfare

and well being of older people. To affirm and protect that statutory right of

every New Zealand resident, to a sufficient New Zealand Superannuation entitlement.

To strive for a provision of a quality Healthcare to all New Zealand residents regardless of income and location.

To oppose all discriminatory and disadvantageous legislation affecting rights, security and dignity. To be non aligned with any

political party, and to present a strong united lobby to all Parliament and statutory Bodies on matters affecting New Zealanders.

To promote and establish links with kindred organisations.

To promote recognition of the wide-ranging services provided by senior citizens of New Zealand.

To gain recognition as an appropriate voice for all older New Zealanders.

Grey Power has many achievements. A recent achievement is a win for the elderly in the highly competitive electricity retail market through the formation of Grey Power Electricity.

Grey Power Federation Inc. and Pulse Energy have been working together to build this new partnership for a number of months, which will give Grey Power members access to low cost power, easy-to-read bills, and a friendly New Zealand based call centre dedicated to serving Grey Power customers.
