Habitat gives a hand upNot many three-year-olds can say they got a house for their birthday but now Jaydah-Mc can, as her parents Jaimee Epere and Himi Ihimaera-Mikahere, received the keys to their Habitat for Humanity home on her June 9 birthday.

“It is great to have something to work towards and to have a stable home. It is the kids future,” said Ms Epere.

The home was built by Ngawha prison inmates and is fully insulated. The relationship between the Department of Corrections and Habitat for Humanity means the inmates gain valuable skills to be used upon their release.

Ms Epere works as a Home Interaction Programme for Parents and Youngsters coordinator whilst Mr Ihimaera-Mikahere works at Silver Fern Farms in the meat works.

The couple and their three children Ky-Mani, Jaydah-Mc and Breez, had been living in an overcrowded home with sewage problems and were stuck renting places that did not provide a safe and stable living environment.

As part of the arrangement, the family contributed 500 hours of ‘sweat equity’ during the building process of their house.

They will rent for four years and have eight years to secure a mortgage allowing them to purchase the home through affordable payments.

The four bedroom home on Jervois Street is the fifth house in five years to be built in Dargaville and the organisation took this opportunity to announce a sixth home scheduled for Phoenix Place.

“We really want to encourage people who have applied to be a part of the programme before to reapply as they may still be eligible.

p Te Kopuru School students and teachers dressed up celebrating their annual book week. The library was transformed into a castle theme, with princesses, clowns, kings, comic and other characters coming to life. “The aim of book week is to promote the love of reading and to provide an opportunity for parents and caregivers to interact with their children while enjoying books,” said principal Lee Anderson.

p Rodney College competed in the annual Lower North Cross Country competition hosted by Otamatea High School. Nine students placed in the top three of the six divisions. Olivia McDonald won the senior girls, Eden Smith placed first in the intermediate girls and Georgia Brierly came second for junior girls and competed again at the Northland Cross Country at Barge Park and came second in the Year 9 Girls. “It was a very well run event and the students performed well, it was a great day,” said sports coordinator Maria Northin.

p Nudging nine kilos, or 20 pounds in fishing parlance, this Kaipara snapper was destined for the smokehouse after being landed by Pahi’s ‘Gravy’ Greaves. He was fishing solo at the time, but at least Cooper the border collie was at home to admire his efforts, and hopefully earn a taste of the finished product.

Therapists Los Angeles boundu by Ayla Miller

Esthetica Skin Revision Clinic, based in Dargaville, has qualified in the top five for the DMK ‘win a trip’ competition. Therapist Kimberly Fletcher, who also placed in the top five therapist category, and owner Trisha House will be rewarded with a five day trip to Los Angeles in September to learn from founder and cosmetic chemist Dr Danné Montague-King himself.

“We were absolutely blown away by the results. The competition involved 200 clinics throughout Australia and New Zealand and over 400 skin therapists, so for us to place in the top five is amazing,” said Trisha.

Senior Esthetica therapist Mieke Lugtigheid also consistently ranked in the top 10 throughout the competition.

Between February 1 to March 10 this year, clients who spent $50 or more on DMK products were invited to enter the ‘Win a trip for two to Paris’ competition, stating the clinic and therapist they purchased from. The top five financially performing clinics and skin therapists won a trip to Los

Angeles including accommodation and training. “Kimberly is having a great year. She was also accepted onto the DMK Mentor Programme, one of only two spaces available each year in New Zealand. This involves one-on-one post-graduate training in clinic with the DMK national educator every fortnight.”

DMK use biochemistry principals in their range of skin treatments motivated by Dr Montague-King’s own experiences with skin problems in his youth.

“The girls are really passionate about their work and it shows. I’m so proud of them.” ¢

Community backs separate councilsu by Ayla Miller

Community responses are largely in favour of the decision to scrap the proposal to form a ‘super council’ consisting of Far North, Kaipara, Whangarei and the Northland Regional Council.

Only one person of seven interviewed in a Kaipara Lifestyler street poll was against the Local Government Commission’s decision to scrap the proposal.

The draft proposal followed an application by the Far North District Council for a local government reorganisation late 2012. It suggested a single unitary authority for the Far North District and seven community boards. The suggestion was released to gauge public support in November 2013 and was met with 90% of submissions

against the idea. Local government commission chief executive Sandra Preston said councils in Northland were identifying alternative systems to run the local government and the commission will work with the community in realising these options.

“There needs to be more emphasis on the role of communities identifying the challenges they face, the options that can address those challenges, and the development of more consensus on their preferred approach to change,’’ said Ms Preston.

p Ruth Oliver: “The current council are doing a good job of getting our debt down.”

p Ashish Rao believes Dargaville is doing well on it’s own. “More people are moving from outside and settling here.” Payal Kumar: “The current council are trying their best.”

p Leo Glamuzina: “If we were to merge, we would lose some of the democratic process.”

Kaipara District Council acting chief executive Jill McPherson said: “Clearly the proposal lacked community support. Now we need to show the Commission what we can achieve without reorganisation by working closely together as Councils, and with Iwi.” ¢

Kaipara schools to get hands dirtyu by Ayla Miller

Four schools in the Kaipara have received a share of $20,000 along with 19 other schools, as part of the Northland Regional Council Environmental Curriculum Awards for their environmental education initiatives.

Otamatea High, Ruawai Primary, Tangiteroria School and Tinopai School have each received funds of up to $1,550 to be used for projects including paper brick making, keeping bees and establishing community gardens.

Tangiteroria teacher Tina Bradshaw says the funding will help the school move their long term plan forward.

“We’ve got a little green house and will work to set it up with shelving. The kids are excited to get some chickens to look after.

“We have also ordered bee suits so students can go with the adults to observe the school bee hives.

“We have lots of children who love hands on experiences. It is very valuable teaching time and we hope to arrange a sort of outdoor classroom.”

Regional council chairman Bill Shepherd and councillor Craig Brown, who selected this year’s winners, are said to have been impressed by the proposed projects which will involve entire school communities.

Councillor Shepherd says the ECA’s recognise and support environmental

New owners for Maungaturoto butcheru by Ann Morgan

Ken Webster owned the Maungaturoto butcher shop for 30 years, with his son Kyle working alongside him for the last 18 years until the time came to sell the business and live a little.

Local farmers John and Pat Massey, who also own a local home kill business, have purchased the butcher shop and combined their operations.

“Ken only ever bought top prime meat, it is astounding how good the meat it is, it is beautiful, I was amazed when I first walked in,” said Pat.

“We are keeping everything the same, they built a great business, the shop is beautiful. We may add a few products but we won’t be taking anything away.

We have also kept his butcher Beau with us, and Wayne, our

butcher is here too, he has been a butcher for 30 years.” John is a fifth generation Maungaturoto farmer, living on the family farm which was originally purchased in 1864, and his grandfather Cliff, was a well known local identity.

“Ken and Kyle are going fishing, they haven’t fished together for 15 years and with a new baby, Kyle will be enjoying family life.

They did a wonderful job here and we look forward to carrying the business on and serving our customers the same great products,” said Pat. ¢

Ensuring healthy relationshipsu by Ayla Miller

Lesley Elliott, mother of domestic violence victim Sophie Elliot, will visit Otamatea High School on June 24 to speak about warning signs of unsafe relationships.

The Sophie Elliott Foundation was set up to raise awareness among young adults and communities about partner abuse, in memory of the 22-year-old who was killed by her former boyfriend and university tutor.

“The evening is especially aimed at teenagers, their parents and other community members, so we all know what to look out for to help keep our young people safe,” says local organiser Libby Jones.

This event is funded by Rural Women New Zealand in conjunction with Ministry of Social Development, and the local ‘It’s Not Ok’ campaign, and will be held in the school hall from 7–9pm.

There will also be a solutions focused workshop the following day on June 25 at the Maungaturoto Country Club from 9.30am to midday.

The workshop will be facilitated by ‘It’s Not Ok’ social action senior advisor Jac Lynch, with Lesley Elliott and local campaign coordinator Quentin Jukes

p Lesley Elliott will visit Maungaturoto to spread the word about healthy relationships

and will offer a chance for community organisations to learn about helping others, who provides what support in the community and what other communities are doing to reduce family violence.

A night of glamouru by Ayla Miller

A group of eight friends in Mangawhai have banded together to support Mangawhai Activity Zone, and are holding a Casino Royale themed charity gala dinner and auction to fundraise for family barbecue zones on Saturday, June 20 at the Mangawhai Recreation Centre.

The group have been planning since February and are aiming to raise $20,000.

“We contacted people and identified the need for these facilities,” says committee member Jo Lee.

“Our main auction will be run by Harcourt’s national auction manager, with Heller’s man Leigh Hart as MC.

“We have also had a number of businesses and individuals contribute by the way of sponsorship. This is

wonderfully generous and we are very appreciative of the support.” One guest will win $500 cash and there will be spot prizes, raffles and roulette wheels.

“We all have children that are using the bike park and the playground so we are just looking to give something back. It has been heartwarming to see the community rallying around.”

Limited spaces are still available. To purchase tickets contact Dayna Beauchamp at [email protected]. ¢

‘Biggest loser’ challenges staffu by Ayla Miller

Just under 70 Silver Fern Farm staff are exchanging their work boots for running shoes, as they take part in the Dargaville plant’s ‘biggest loser’ challenge.

The 12 week programme is based on the reality television show on which contestants work to lose the largest amount of weight for a grand prize.

The plant-wide initiative aims to improve overall health and well-being amongst the staff.

Participants are divided into teams and weighed in weekly receiving prizes for their efforts which include healthy recipe books, meal plans and fitness programmes as incentives.

“We have seen a huge improvement in morale,” says plant manager and participant Lance Warmington. “A number of staff are now walking to work

and there is quite a bit of competitive talk up on the floor and camaraderie. The use of the staff gym has gone up as well.”

Strategies with Kids Information for Parents coordinator Yvette Gilchrist says: “It is about role modelling. They can take information home, which leads to happier families. They have been learning about how to control their sugar intake and talking about alternative cooking methods.”

The teams are half way through the programme and the individual who loses the most weight will win a Masport barbecue. ¢

Rural broadband solutionu by Ann Morgan

Frustrated rural communities with substandard internet access have help on the way with Spark announcing its pricing for their new Rural Wireless Broadband.

“The 4G solution uses a self-installed antenna which simply attaches to the wireless modem. Customers can plug-in and go immediately, without waiting for technicians or the need for cables and large aerials,” said head of mobility products David Redmore.

“Spark’s 4G Rural Wireless Broadband network, uses more than 150 — 700MHz cell towers operating around rural New Zealand. The towers are specifically designed for rural areas and do not rely on lines.

“We have more 700MHz spectrum than any other operator in New Zealand so we can offer the best performance and a seamless experience.”

Dairy farmer Tony Walters recently installed Spark Rural Wireless Broadband. He says within minutes of getting the equipment he was able to connect at over 50Mbps — that’s equal to speeds on fibre broadband networks, and up to ten times faster than some existing 3G products.

“Data and computing is now an important part of any farming business. We need a reliable and fast broadband connection to monitor and maximise the efficiency of the farm. This gives us the speed we require for processing data, and provides my family the

broadband capacity they need. “It’s a far better solution than what we’ve had in the past.”

The new faster alternative to existing slower rural broadband products will cost $95 a month for 80GB of data and $105 per month for broadband, a landline and national calling and is set to launch in the coming weeks. Spark’s service also comes with a 30-day money back guarantee.

Those interested can register online at store.spark.co.nz/forms/s/rural-wireless-broadband. ¢

WARM UP FOR WINTERA smart way to keep the heat

A cure for winter chills

u by Andy Bryenton

Winter is well and truly with us, and the arithmetic of heat versus cost is very much at the forefront of local minds.

Those with fireplaces at their disposal have, by now, laid in stores of dry firewood to tide them through the winter months, but the usual problem of this time-tested means of heating still exists for most. How can the heat from a roaring fire be spread evenly throughout the home?

We’ve all felt it — a toasty warm lounge room and freezing cold bedrooms. Even in a well insulated house which has been rendered dry and healthy by adequate ventilation, it is still irksome to have to resort to inefficient electric heaters for the far-flung areas on the home. One answer lies with heat transfer systems, a technology which has been improving rapidly over recent years.

Put simply, a well insulated living room traps excess heat near the ceiling. Unable to escape through thick batts,

that heat builds up overhead, where it is of little use. A modern heat trans switches on via a thermostat when the heat above the firebox reaches a preset threshold. At this point, powerful, quiet fans duct the warm air through heavily insulated tubes, sending it direct to other rooms of the house.

These systems were once somewhat inefficient, due to loud or weak motors and poorly insulated ducting. But nowadays, modern heat transfer systems can pour warmth into bedrooms with barely a whisper, using cleverly designed diffusers to make sure it reaches everywhere. If your home has a well insulated ceiling cavity, this kind of system — usually able to be installed for around the $1,000 mark — could eliminate the need for electric heaters when the fireplace is burning bright. ¢

Unveiled brides through timeu by Ann Morgan

The Albertland Heritage museum in Wellsford is celebrating early Kaipara settlement with an accent on weddings as its annual commemoration of the pioneers who arrived from 1862 onwards.

Albertland was the name given to a 70,000 acre swathe of land bordering the northern river valleys of the Kaipara Harbour stretching from Port Albert through to Ruawai.

“ T h e m u s e u m celebrates the Albertland migration, and has images and items going back to these times,” said museum manager Peter Marsh.

“This year we are doing something different for the annual commemorative event, acknowledging the departure of the first Albertlanders from England.”

Museum volunteers have created an exhibition featuring bridal gowns and wedding attire. One hundred years of wedding dresses are on display all having Albertland connections, some going back to the late 1800s.

p Tomarata School held a ‘Mathathon’ fundraiser, with students working in teams to use their problem-solving skills to answer questions, competing against their classmates. “The event was jointly organised by the school and a team of hard-working parents,” said principal Lynne Duffin. “Funds raised will go towards our playground equipment goal for the year. The students thoroughly enjoyed the event, and prizes for the first team with all 10 answers correct in each class were presented on the day.”

Hunting for school fundsWild foods are on the menu for Paparoa Primary School — as a fundraiser.

The annual Paparoa Hotel pig hunting contest has been expanded to include fishing with snapper and eels earning prize money along with the hunters best boars.

“We decided this year that as it is a community activity we should be supporting a good community project,” said publican, Justin Healey.

“The school was an obvious choice as many participants have children enrolled there, and of course, fishing is something the youngsters can be involved in on the day. So all proceeds from the event, including the auction of wild pork and fish, will go into the school coffers to pay for all those extras that otherwise might be outside the normal budget, perhaps for equipment, sports gear, or school trips.”

The contest takes place over three days from June 19 to 21, concluding at 3pm on Sunday 21st with a prize-giving at 4pm, followed by the auction.

“We will be having a hangi dinner that evening, with non-competitors welcome to buy a ticket, and there will be live music. Tickets are available at outlets across the Kaipara, and kids under 12 are free,” said Mr Healey.

New agricultural hub plannedWith a busy start to the 2015/16 season in agriculture, backed up by a very successful national Fieldays last week, plans are afoot for a new rural support centre at the convergence of state highways 12 and 14 in Dargaville.

A D V E RT O R I A L

The planned centre will combine farming implements, machinery and tractor repair, oil, lubricants, parts, ag chemicals and spray equipment under one roof, bringing together all these services under the Primehort banner at the site of their existing Dargaville store. This means a shift from their recently purchased Kaipara Agri Centre site in Beach Road.

In order to make the move a smooth one the Kaipara Agri Centre is currently holding a closing down sale, but this is far from the end for this strand of the business. All the services currently offered at the long-established Beach Road location are planned to shift to the new and expanded premises just across town, with plans well in train for a grand opening which

will see a wide range of farm support services under one roof before the Spring.

It’s a move which is well in line with current trends in farming. With so much to be accomplished on the land each day, the convenience of having so many vital services in one place is a nationwide trend, and experience elsewhere in the country shows that such a move toward amalgamation will prove popular with busy farmers.

The people at Primehort encourage their customers to ‘watch this space’ as their plans for a Kaipara rural hub come together, and assure us of a warm welcome when the gates are opened on their new endeavour in weeks to come.

“Too much swings n’ rounabouts Dog!” Tipical of tha Boss eh? There I was

“Yep Dog,” he sed again.” Blimmin wool and beef pricis go up a bit, bluddy deary prices go threw tha floor. Yah can’t blimmin’ win.”

Well, soun’s like the Feel Daze was a bit ofa downer then? Musta bin ‘cos this year Boss didn’t hava ute loaded up with stuff ta stick under tha woolshed, like he did the las’ few years. Boss musta red my mind.

“Didn’t take me check book this yeer,” he sed, just as Sharlene, his gerlfrend came ova ta the shed, He give her a kiss.

“Well deah,” sed Sharlene. “Wot did yer bring me?” Well, tha Boss pulled back the tarp ona ute and there was a new lorn mower.

I cood see Sharlene was a bit surprised, but she looked ata Boss a bit sideways, ta see wot he was gonna say. Boss gotta messige too. “Yep, deah. Wen I saw you doin’ tha lawns atta

house wiv the old push mowa, I sed I’d betta get sumthin’ better to do tha job.”

Boss saw Sharlene tappin’ her foot. “And so cos’ I know yer got so much work ina house, I thort I better take over tha lorns meself.”

Well Sharlene gave Boss a Big Hug, an’ sed she’d go an put the kettil on fer a cuppatee. Boss looked at me an’ give a wink. “Whew, quick thinkin’ there, eh Dog?”

Later over a cuppatee, Boss tole Sharlene that sum farmers getting a bit down ina dumps cosa Fonterror cutting milk prices.

“Blokes at Feel Daze wot just got deary — not like us wiv crops, an’ beef, and sheep, with just deary ona runoff — well they lookin’ sideways at Fonterror. We get a good payout one seesin, and then a bad one.

So Fonterror sez it’ll cut down on staff. Well, if they don’t need so much staff, why did they hire ‘em ta head office ina first place?

They shooda saved up ina good yeers ta tide ova the bad yeers. Blimmin’ nee jerk I reckin.”

Then Sharlene cut in. “Yes deah. Fonterror sed, an’ she read outa tha paper: ‘its decision to restructure its head office, with the possible loss of

hundreds of jobs, was necessary to improve the company’s agility in times of low prices.”

“Yah gotta wunder why they didint have sum ajility wen pricis were good too,” Boss sed.

“Seems like they bin making hay wile the sun shines again.! (Sharlene sez that meens spendin’ up large wen times is good, sted of savin fer a rainy day, eh.)

“Ah well,” seda Boss. Glad we gota mixed portfolio eh?

Well readas, gotta go an look up that word. Porfollowy sumthin.
