Parish Mission Statement St. James the Less Parish is a Christian Community of the Roman Catholic tradition. Our Parish Community is dedicated to proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus, and as the people of God are called to further the mission of Jesus. We will do this through the Word, Liturgy, Sacrament, Music, Ecumenism, Evangelization, Religious Education of our Children, Prayer and the Honoring of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We will deepen our knowledge, skills and understanding of our Faith. We will be Faith based. Above all, we will foster Love by example and serve the needs of others to work towards economic and social development for all people.

Baptism: Parents who wish to have their child baptized need

to call the Rectory. Preparation classes are required and are by

appointment only. Baptisms will be held the first Sunday of

every month. Baptismal classes are held the second Sunday of

every month.

Sponsors and Godparents: If you are 18 years of age or

older, you must register as an adult and be confirmed in the

Catholic Church. If you wish to be a Sponsor for Confirmation

or a Godparent, you must be an active parishioner and

attending Mass.

Matrimony: Couples contemplating this Sacrament must

contact the Parish Office at least one year in advance. All

couples planning marriage must attend Pre-Cana classes or

Engaged Encounter.

Ministry of the Sick: Parishioners who are homebound and

would like to receive the Eucharist, please call the Rectory. If

you would like to have your name included on the Prayer List

in the bulletin, please call the Rectory.

RCIA: Adults inquiring about the Catholic Church with a

desire to become Catholic are invited to call the Parish Office

for more information about the Rite of Catholic Initiation of

Adults which begins in September and runs through the

following Easter.

Adoration On Thursdays, Adoration will be held in the Church from 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm. All are welcome to come for any amount of time.

A Note from the Pastor Fr. Michael Fragoso

Lent is here already. It is a time of penance. Penance entails fasting which is foregoing something lawful which we are legitimately entitled. Penance entails almsgiving, sharing our worldly and spiritual gifts with those who are in need. Penance entails prayer, offering all these things to God by deepening our relationship with Christ in his passion and death. Lent is then a time of preparation to worthily celebrate Christ’s resurrection from the dead and ascension into glory. How can we do this? I recommend studying the Gospel for Ash Wednesday (Matthew 6: 1-6; 16-18) which gives us a blueprint for fasting, prayer and almsgiving. Another way is to practice the seven corporal works of mercy, to relieve physical suffering (see Matthew 25:34-40): To feed the hungry. To give drink to the thirsty. To clothe the naked. To shelter the homeless. To visit the sick. To visit the imprisoned. To bury the dead. As well as the seven spiritual works of mercy, to relieve spiritual suffering: To instruct the ignorant. To counsel the doubtful. To admonish sinners. To bear wrongs patiently. To forgive offenses willingly. To comfort the afflicted. To pray for the living and the dead. In this Year of Mercy it is fitting that we show mercy to our neighbor as God shows us his mercy.

the 2015 NJ Right to Life Car/Shop-Rite card Raffle. Because of

your kind welcome and the generosity of your parishioners, we

were able to raise with all participating churches in the county

$67,000+ for NJ Right to Life. Your church played an incredible

role for us to be able to reach such an amount, and with the money

raised, NJ Right to Life can further its efforts to protect the lives of

the unborn, elderly, and disabled from conception to natural death.

I hope we can count on your participation in the 2016 NJ Right

to Life Raffle. My volunteers and I enjoyed the time we spent at

Rite of Election

On the First Sunday of Lent, in every diocese throughout the world, catechumens celebrate, with their Bishop, the Rite of

Election and candidates celebrate, with their Bishop, the Rite of Calling Candidates to Continuing Conversion. The

following from our parish will join candidates and catechumens from other parishes in the Diocese this Sunday afternoon

at the Cathedral.

CANDIDATES (already baptized): Freddy Bruno, Eluteria Carpinteyro Conde, Daniel Quispe, and Oscar

Quispe.

Their journey to reception into the Catholic Church has been a gradual process which has taken place within this parish.

The Rite of Election, for catechumens and the Rite of Calling Candidates to Continuing Conversion is one of the various

steps in the process and it marks the end of the Catechumenate phase and the beginning of the next phase, called

Purification and Enlightenment; a more intense preparation for the sacrament which coincides with the Lenten Season.

We, the entire parish community, have the primary responsibility for their preparation, through our prayers, our example,

and our participation in the various Rites. They cannot move into the next phase or be recognized for their progress by

Bishop Bootkoski at the Calling Candidates for Continuing Conversion, without our recommendation. Their catechists

and sponsors have publicly declared that these Candidates are ready to live faithfully the commitment of the sacrament

they will receive with us. Based on that discernment, we, their parish family send them today to the Rite of Calling

Candidates for Continuing Conversion, with our blessings and our prayers. Today we invite these men and women to

fuller participation in our parish community’s work: preaching the Good News, prayer, reconciliation, worship, and

service for the life of the world. Those who will be baptized at the Easter Vigil, now as Catechumens, will, after the Rite

of Election, be called The Elect. Those who have already been baptized will continue to be called Candidates.

La Cuaresma es ya aquí. Es un tiempo de penitencia. Penitencia implica el ayuno que es dejar algo nos corresponden legítimamente. Penitencia implica la limosna, compartiendo nuestros dones con los que están en necesidad. Penitencia implica la oración, ofreciendo todas estas cosas a Dios mediante la profundización de nuestra relación con Cristo en su pasión y muerte. La Cuaresma es entonces un tiempo de preparación para celebrar dignamente la resurrección de Cristo de entre los muertos y ascensión a la gloria. ¿Cómo podemos hacer esto? Recomiendo estudiar el Evangelio del Miércoles de Ceniza (Mateo 6: 1-6; 16-18), que nos da un modelo para el ayuno, la oración y la limosna. Otra forma es practicar las siete obras de misericordia corporales, para aliviar el sufrimiento físico (Véase Mateo 25: 34-40): Alimentar a los hambrientos. Dar de beber al sediento. Vestir al desnudo. Refugiar a las personas sin hogar. Visitar a los enfermos. Visitar a los presos. Enterrar a los muertos. Además de las siete obras de misericordia espirituales, para aliviar el sufrimiento espiritual: Instruir a los ignorantes. Aconsejar al que dude. Advertir a los pecadores. Lenten Instructions – 2016 Lent allows each of us to let our Catholic tradition of fasting and abstaining be an important reminder of what it means to suffer or to be without. This liturgical season is a blessed opportunity for us to unite with our brothers and sisters who are hungry, poor, homeless, or living on the fringes of society and to draw near to all those who suffer from illness, affliction, addiction or other serious burden. The following is a reminder of the Lenten instructions to use as a guide as we unite with those who suffer, near and far. So that the Church of Metuchen may be spiritually one in a common observance of Lent, the following days of fast and abstinence are to be observed by all Catholics of the Diocese who enjoy the blessings of good health: 1. The days of fast and abstinence are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. 2. All other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence. 3. From the Evening Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday until the celebration of the Easter Vigil on the evening of Holy Saturday, the Easter fast is suggested so that, with uplifted and welcoming hearts, we may be ready to celebrate the joys of the Resurrection. This ancient tradition, intimately connected with the Rites of Holy Week and the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults, is encouraged, especially in those places baptizing catechumens at the Easter Vigil. The obligation to fast applies only to Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59. To fast in the Catholic tradition means to limit oneself to one full meal during the day so as to experience hunger. The obligation of abstinence affects all Catholics who have reached the age of 14. Abstinence in the Catholic tradition means to abstain from meat. The obligation of fast and abstinence, as a whole, is a serious obligation. While failure to observe any penitential day in itself may not be considered serious, the failure to observe any penitential days at all, or a substantial number of them without good cause, would be considered a grave matter. Those unable to abstain for a valid reason on any given Friday of Lent are asked to perform some other penitential act, or to abstain on another day. My faithful brothers and sisters, in our fasting and abstaining this Lent, I pray that we each may choose to embrace this small suffering rather than accept it with misery or complaint. For, if we are joyful in our Lenten observances, we will be granted an opportunity to more fully understand the true sacrifice that Jesus Christ made for all humanity by accepting death on the cross in order to gain our eternal salvation. +Most Rev. Meal with a Message

The Jamesburg Association of Churches will be

hosting a Lenten Series at the Presbyterian Church

every Wednesday evening at 6:30 pm beginning

on Ash Wednesday and concluding during Holy

Week. A spaghetti dinner will be provided

followed by a lecture about the institution of the

Passover observance from one of the Jamesburg
