St. James Religious Education Reminders

Confirmation Parent/Candidate Mtg Monday, January 16th @ 7pm

Confirmation Info form, Sponsor form w/ Parish Seal,

Confirmation fee, robe order form and Saint report are all due.

After Christmas I went with three priests from our Diocese to Rome. It was a blessed time. No, I did not get to see the Holy Father except as a small figure far away, standing at his window on Wednesday Angelus. We did try to sneak in to concelebrate Mass on the Feast of Mary, Mother of God, but we needed special tickets for that. Instead we went to Santa Maria Maggiore, the Church of Our Lady on her feast day. I visited the Church of the Twelve Apostles where the relics of St James, our patron, are found along with the relics of St Philip the Apostle. I prayed for our parish, for each and every one of our parishioners and for our community. It gives me sorrow to have to report that Msgr Szymanski has asked me to take him off the schedule until further notice. His vision has been affected by macular degeneration. He will be undergoing treatment. Please pray that it will be successful. We wish him all the best and thank him for his service to our parish. This last week I had to travel to Florida as my father-in-law, René Herrera passed away suddenly on Sunday. He was Sicilian on his mother’s side. Filled with good humor and not above a practical joke or cheating at dominoes. He and Julia were married for some 60 years. Their only daughter was my dear wife. Please say a prayer for him.

Parish Intention of the Month As we begin this year with the love of Christ in our hearts, we pray that we may see each person

we meet as Jesus sees them.

CATHOLIC TRIVIA

Which Apostle is buried under the altar of St Peter's Basilica? Two Apostles are buried in the Church of the Twelve Apostles in Rome? Who are they? **Last week’s answer will be in next weekend’s bulletin.**

ATTENTION!

With the start of a new year, we will updating our “Prayer for the Sick” list. If you have someone on the list and would like to leave their name on it, please contact the rectory no later than February 1st.

My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, We have embarked on a new year filled with exciting possibilities and bold, new ideas. With faith, we look ahead with hope and high expectations, and of all of our hopes and expectations, few are higher than those we have for our children and grandchildren, nieces or nephews, especially when it comes to their education.

That is because education is so important to our communities, our country and our world, and the reasons why it is so important underscore why a Catholic school education, in particular, is so valuable. Our schools teach more than civic responsibility – they teach daily what it takes to become Disciples of Christ. From our Youth Ministry programs, where high school students learn to live their faith, to the culture of service infused at all grade levels, to adding their voice to public discourse on policy matters such as abortion and physician assisted suicide, our students are actively engaged in the tenets of their faith.

Our test scores, high school graduation rates, college attendance and other data frequently outperform schools in both the public and private sectors. Our teachers are dedicated educators, and I can attest to the fact that our schools are a place where every child is loved and nurtured in an environment that is accepting and empowering.

Next Sunday our parishes will offer a special collection that supports the Foundation for Catholic Education’s annual scholarship program, which offers need-based grants to children attending a Catholic elementary or high school in our Diocese. These scholarships, in combination with parish and school aid, make a Catholic school education possible for many children each year. Whether you have family in Catholic school or not, it is a great way to form the next generation of our Church.

I hope each of you will give consideration to our call for support of this critically important ministry of the Catholic Church, and I thank you for your faith and commitment to the good works of your parish community and our diocese.

With renewed best wishes, I remain Yours in Christ,

Most Reverend James F. Checchio, J.C.D., M.B.A. Bishop of Metuchen
