Pastoral Staff

Parish Mission Statement St. James the Less Parish is a Christian Community of the Roman Catholic tradition. Our Parish Community is dedicated to proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus, and as the people of God are called to further the mission of Jesus. We will do this through the Word, Liturgy, Sacrament, Music, Ecumenism, Evangelization, Religious Education of our Children, Prayer and the Honoring of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We will deepen our knowledge, skills and understanding of our Faith. We will be Faith based. Above all, we will foster Love by example and serve the needs of others to work towards economic and social development for all people.

Baptism: Parents who wish to have their child baptized need

to call the Rectory. Preparation classes are required and are by

appointment only. Baptisms will be held the first Sunday of

every month. Baptismal classes are held the second Sunday of

every month.

Sponsors and Godparents: If you are 18 years of age or

older, you must register as an adult and be confirmed in the

Catholic Church. If you wish to be a Sponsor for Confirmation

or a Godparent, you must be an active parishioner and

attending Mass.

Matrimony: Couples contemplating this Sacrament must

contact the Parish Office at least one year in advance. All

couples planning marriage must attend Pre-Cana classes or

Engaged Encounter.

Ministry of the Sick: Parishioners who are homebound and

would like to receive the Eucharist, please call the Rectory. If

you would like to have your name included on the Prayer List

in the bulletin, please call the Rectory.

RCIA: Adults inquiring about the Catholic Church with a

desire to become Catholic are invited to call the Parish Office

for more information about the Rite of Catholic Initiation of

Adults which begins in September and runs through the

following Easter.

Adoration On Thursdays, Adoration will be held in the Church from 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm. All are welcome to come for any amount of time.

Join us March 18th for a fun filled overnight to grow in

faith and love, and to learn what it means to be a

woman of God! Come for a night of games, movies,

snacks, and prayer. All women in grades 6-12 are

invited. Feel free to bring a friend. The women are

meeting in cafeteria at Immaculate Conception at 8:30

p.m.

What are my teenage years meant to be for me? A time

to play video games and goof off? Do you have what it

takes for something greater? Calling all men of God!

Men from the 6th-12th grade come to Guy’s Retreat on

Friday, March 18th from 8:30 p.m. –7:30 a.m. in the

rectory basement. Come for fun, food, discussions and

man up challenges!

A Note from the Pastor Fr. Michael Fragoso

Somebody asked me a good question, “Do we still have to do our Easter duty?” It used to be that all were expected to confess their sins in Lent and receive Holy Communion at Easter. Church Law has not changed but it needs some explanation. For the Sacrament of Reconciliation the law states that when one is conscious of grave or mortal sin it should be confessed as needed but at least once a year. Grave sins are those against the Ten Commandments and the Five Precepts of the Church. For example: To love God with your whole being means not being superstitious, going to mediums, astrology, witchcraft, etc. To keep holy the Lords Day means going to Mass on Sunday and Holy Days of Obligation. To keep holy the Lord’s name means just that, not using the name of Jesus in anger, frustration, out of spite or to swear by frivolously. Solemn oaths for public office, testifying before the court, are acceptable. The commandment says, “For the Lord will not leave unpunished anyone who invokes his name in vain.” (Ex 20:7) Venial sins are those that are not as serious: hating somebody so much so as to wish them harm is a grave sin; but disliking them so as to not associate with them is a venial sin. Another example is using abusive language in extreme frustration versus to intentionally hurt someone. While venial sins are not required to be confessed, Pope St John Paul II would confess every day and one presumes these sins to have been venial. It’s a matter of trying to achieve holiness and perfection: “Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.” (Mt 5:48) The idea of confessing during Lent was to be able to receive communion worthily, that is without sin. St Paul wrote that who receives Holy Communion unworthily calls judgement upon himself (1 Cor 11:27-9). As your Pastor it is my duty to bring this to your attention. It would be much worse to bring more sin upon you by failing to follow this simple step: confessing your sins so as to worthily receive Holy Communion. Since I see a lot of people receiving Communion on Sunday, I assume they are going to the surrounding parishes for confession.

Bishop Paul G. Bootkoski will celebrate the Chrism Mass

with the priests of the Diocese. At this Mass, the Bishop

will bless the Holy Oils which each parish receives for the

rites of anointing. Saint Ambrose [340-397] began this

custom-which we now call the Chrism Mass-in his

Cathedral in Milan. These Holy Oils, which are used to

sanctify the Faithful, have been channels of holiness for

centuries! The Oil of Catechumens is used to anoint the

chest of infants and hands of adults before their Baptism;

the Oil of the Sick is used on the forehead and hands of the

infirm in the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick; and

Sacred Chrism is used to anoint the head of the newly

baptized, the foreheads of confirmandi, the hands of a

priest at his ordination, the head of a bishop at his

ordination, and the altar and walls of new churches. At the

Mass, all priests make a Renewal of Commitment to

Priestly Service, recommitting themselves to their Bishop

and to their ministry to God and His People; the Bishop

and all Priests then ask the people for a pledge of their

prayerful support. All are strongly encouraged to join in

the ancient, grace-filled Chrism Mass at the Cathedral of

St. Francis of Assisi.

Alguien me hizo una buena pregunta esta semana, “¿Se debe recibir comunión en tiempo de Pascua?" Es la ley de la Iglesia que los que hayan recibido la primera comunión reciban la Santa Comunión por lo menos una vez al año en tiempo de Pascua. Por eso es costumbre confesarse en tiempo de Cuaresma para recibir la Santa Comunión dignamente en tiempo de Pascua. Ley de la Iglesia no ha cambiado. La ley establece que se debe presentar al Sacramento de la Reconciliación cuando uno es consciente de pecado grave o mortal, según sea necesario, por lo menos una vez al año. Pecados graves son aquellos contra los Diez Mandamientos y los Cinco Preceptos de la Iglesia. Por ejemplo: Amar a Dios con todo el ser significa no ir a los espiritistas, la astrología, la brujería. Todo eso es superstición y creencias falsas. Santificar el día del Señor significa ir a misa los domingos y fiestas de obligación. Mantener santo nombre del Señor significa exactamente eso, no usar el nombre de Jesús en la ira, frustración, por despecho o jurar frívolamente. Juramentos solemnes para un cargo público o para los que testifican ante el tribunal, son aceptables. El mandamiento dice: "Porque el Señor no dejará sin castigo a cualquiera que invoca su nombre en vano." (Ex 20: 7) Los pecados veniales son aquellos que no son tan graves: odiar tanto a alguien con el fin de desearle daño es un pecado grave; pero el no gustarle con fin de no asociarse con ellos socialmente es un pecado venial. Otro ejemplo es el uso de lenguaje abusivo en la frustración extrema, comparado con tener la intención de causarle algún daño. No se requiere confesar los pecados veniales pero el Papa San Juan Pablo II se confesaba todos los días y es de suponer que esos pecados eran venial. Es una cuestión de tratar de alcanzar la santidad y la perfección: ". Sed perfectos como vuestro Padre celestial es perfecto" (Mt 5,48) La idea de confesar durante la Cuaresma (es decir estar libre de pecado) era para poder recibir la comunión dignamente en tiempo de Pascua. San Pablo escribió que quien recibe la Sagrada Comunión indignamente se condena a si mismo. (1 Cor 11: 27-9). Como su pastor es mi deber traer esto a su atención. Sería mucho peor si cayera más pecado sobre usted por no seguir este sencillo paso: confesar sus pecados a fin de recibir dignamente la Santa Comunión. Por eso es importante confesarse aquí o en una parroquia vecina frecuentemente.

Our trained and caring facilitators will guide you on your journey through grief beginning on Monday, March 28 at 7:30 PM in the Rectory basement meeting room and will continue for the next six Mondays. The rectory is located at 18 South Street, Spotswood. Each session focuses on a stage of grief and offers a safe haven during a difficult time.
