Parish Mission Statement St. James the Less Parish is a Christian Community of the Roman Catholic tradition. Our Parish Community is dedicated to proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus, and as the people of God are called to further the mission of Jesus. We will do this through the Word, Liturgy, Sacrament, Music, Ecumenism, Evangelization, Religious Education of our Children, Prayer and the Honoring of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We will deepen our knowledge, skills and understanding of our Faith. We will be Faith based. Above all, we will foster Love by example and serve the needs of others to work towards economic and social development for all people.

Baptism: Parents who wish to have their child baptized need to call the Rectory. Preparation classes are required and are by appointment only. Baptisms will be held the first Sunday of every month. Baptismal classes are held the second Sunday of every month. Sponsors and Godparents: If you are 18 years of age or older, you must register as an adult and be confirmed in the Catholic Church. If you wish to be a Sponsor for Confirmation or a Godparent, you must be an active parishioner and attending Mass. Matrimony: Couples contemplating this Sacrament must contact the Parish Office at least one year in advance. All couples planning marriage must attend Pre-Cana classes or Engaged Encounter. Ministry of the Sick: Parishioners who are homebound and would like to receive the Eucharist, please call the Rectory. If you would like to have your name included on the Prayer List in the bulletin, please call the Rectory. RCIA: Adults inquiring about the Catholic Church with a desire to become Catholic are invited to call the Parish Office for more information about the Rite of Catholic Initiation of Adults which begins in September and runs through the following Easter.

Adoration On Thursdays, Adoration will be held in the Church from 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm. All are welcome to come for any amount of time.

Bishop’s Annual Appeal Update

Pope St John Paul II designated this Sunday the Second Sunday of Easter as Divine Mercy Sunday. You may recall he died on Divine Mercy Sunday. When he died the Romans claimed his sanctity crying out, “Santo subito!” Today we are reminded of God’s mercy which we cannot fathom. What does it mean for us? Firstly that there is hope for us. God may relent from the punishment we really deserve. God loves us and He is All-Merciful, yet he is also All-Just. Justice demands that we give that which is due. It is a great mystery which I cannot understand totally. What I do know is that we must forgive if we are to be forgiven. Elie Wiesel who survived Auschwitz and tattooed with the number A-7713 on his left arm, wrote, “I cannot and I do not want to forgive the killers of children; I ask God not to forgive.” An understandable human response to something which humans cannot understand. St Maximillian Kolbe, Franciscan Friar from Poland, tattooed with number 16770 on his left arm, did not survive Auschwitz. One prisoner escaped and the Deputy Commandant Karl Fritzsch picked ten men to be starved to death in an underground bunker. One man, Franciszek Gajowniczek, pleaded that he had a family. Fr. Kolbe stepped forward and volunteered to take his place. In the bunker Fr Kolbe led the men in prayers to the Blessed Mother. After two weeks, he was the only one left alive. When the Nazis entered the cell he was singing a Marian hymn, and was injected with carbolic acid. Fr. Kolbe lifted his arm to receive the lethal injection. He was cremated on the feast of the Assumption. The question is, would Fr. Kolbe welcome SS-Hauptsturmführer Karl Fritzch into heaven? Fritzch was the first to suggest the use of nerve gas for mass murder of the prisoners and he was the first to use the gas on Russian POW’s. We don’t know what eventually happened to Fritzsch, some say he shot himself; he may have escaped to South America. By now he would be dead of old age. I do not know. I do hope that even that vile monster could have mustered enough repentance and humility and asked the Lord for forgiveness, but, knowing human nature, I doubt it. Even so there is an iota of hope for him. I also know that St Maximilian would welcome him in heaven. What can we say to Dr. Wiesel? In the Foreword to Wiesel’s book, Night, François Mauriac, the French Nobel laureate wrote, “And I, who believe that God is love…did I speak to him of that other Jew, this crucified brother who perhaps resembled him and whose cross conquered the world?” That is the mystery of Divine Mercy. God says our ways are as nothing compared to His ways. Our Lord left us the sacraments so we could experience God’s grace which extends to us his love and his mercy. Have we thanked Him? The best way to thank Him is to constantly turn our hearts to Him by having an active sacramental life and by deepening out internal life of prayer.

El Papa San Juan Pablo II dedicó este Domingo, el Segundo Domingo de Pascua, a la Divina Misericordia. Recordemos que murió el Domingo de la Divina Misericordia, entonces los romanos proclamaron su santidad gritando "¡Santo súbito!" Hoy nos recuerda la misericordia de Dios que no podemos comprender. ¿Qué significa para nosotros? En primer lugar, que hay esperanza para nosotros. Dios puede renunciar el castigo que realmente merecemos. Dios nos ama y Él es Todo-Misericordioso, pero también es Todo-Justo. La justicia exige que le demos lo que se le debe. Es un gran misterio que yo no entiendo totalmente. Lo que sí sé es que debemos perdonar si esperamos ser perdonados. Elie Wiesel que sobrevivió el campo nazi de Auschwitz y fue tatuado con el número A-7713 en su brazo izquierdo, escribió: "No puedo y no quiero perdonar a los asesinos de niños; Pido a Dios que no perdone.” Podemos comprender esta respuesta tan humana a algo que los humanos no podemos entender. San Maximiliano Kolbe, fraile franciscano de Polonia, tatuado con el número 16770 en su brazo izquierdo, no sobrevivió Auschwitz. Un prisionero escapó y el comandante adjunto Karl Fritzsch eligió a diez hombres para que murieran de hambre en un bunker subterráneo. Un prisionero, Franciszek Gajowniczek, rogó que tenía una familia. El Padre Kolbe dio un paso adelante y se ofreció a tomar su lugar. En el prólogo del libro de Wiesel, La Noche, François Mauriac, el premio Nobel francés escribió: "Y yo, que creo que Dios es amor ... ¿le habré hablado del otro judío, de ese hermano crucificado, que tal vez se parecía él, y con cuya cruz conquistó al mundo?" Ese es el misterio de la Divina Misericordia. Dios dice que nuestros caminos no son nada comparados con Sus caminos. Nuestro Señor nos dejó los sacramentos para que pudiéramos experimentar la gracia de Dios que nos extiende su amor y su misericordia. ¿Lo hemos agradecido? La mejor manera de agradecerle es que constantemente volvamos nuestros corazones a Él con una vida sacramental activa y profundizando la vida interna de la oración.
