A Letter From Our Principal

Dear Eastvalley Parents,

Fall is all around us! Fall happens to be one of my favorite times of the year with the cooler weather, football and all the festivals around the area.

The PTA did a marvelous job putting on an awesome Fall Festival at Eastvalley. The weather could not have been better, the rides were popular with the children and the food was yummy! Of course, the raffle baskets brought some excitement at the end and the Kiss A Frog contest was popular again! Mitzi Branham, a 5th grade teacher, showed such great spirit in kissing the frog, even though she wasn’t in the running until the last minute! Way to go Ms. Branham!!

Thanks to PTA, especially Marlene Kassens, Tammy Feilmeier, Sue Larsen and Tai Terry for their hard work on this event!

As we end our first nine weeks of school and begin our 2nd nine weeks, here are some ways for you to help your child at home: 1. Ask them specific questions about their day like, “what did you learn in math today? Show me how to do it.” 2. Give them a time and place to complete their homework. Check it after they are done and talk about the mistakes you see. Ask them, “tell me about what you were thinking when you gave this answer.” Sometimes they need to hear someone think out loud to see how it’s done. 3. READ, READ, READ to them, with them and listen to them! Nothing is more beneficial to your child that reading at home with parents. Every child should be reading or being read to at least 20 minutes every night!! 4. Encourage them to give everything their best effort, even if it is something they don’t necessarily like to do. 5. Be a good role model for all aspects of the school day….being on time, respectful communication, completing activities, and giving it your all. Children always look to the adults in their lives to see how they should act! Thank you for your continued support of your children and the teachers at Eastvalley. Please read my blog each week for upcoming events and other communications. You can access it at www.eastvalleyelementary.com. You can also call me at any time to discuss issues, concerns, questions and ideas. The school phone number is 770-578-7214.

Have a great October!!!

Dear Eastvalley Students, Staff and Parents,

We are on a roll this fall…It has been an exciting few weeks full of activities and fun.

The Fall Festival was a huge success and it was a pleasure to see all the families enjoying the gorgeous day. We are happy to be able to bring this fun event to our Eastvalley Families free of charge so that all can participate. It is your support that makes this possible and we thank you.

Congratulations to all who made the cut off for our first Books For Breakfast of the school year. Keep Reading! If you didn’t make it this time, keep working hard to make the next deadline, December 18th. Also, don’t forget about our Math Club. Find out more about the Math Club, including how to use the First in Math website at www.eastvalleypta.org. Keep Calculating!

Start Practicing for the CRCTAs you know, your child will be taking the Criterion Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT) in April 2010.

These tests will be based on the Georgia Performance Standards curriculum your child is being taught

at school each day. The Georgia State Department of Education has developed an online assessment

system containing practice tests that your child can take at home if he/she has access to the internet.

There is no charge for the assessments and you can monitor your child’s progress easily.

The practice tests are based on the skills and knowledge that will be tested next spring and test items are

presented in the same format that students will see on the actual test. It is not too early to start practicing

for the CRCT! On Tuesday, October 13, 2009, a letter was sent home with all of the details and directions

on how to use the system. We hope this resource will be helpful to you throughout the year. If you have

any questions, contact you child’s teacher or Dr. Sage Doolittle, Assistant Principal, at 770-578-7214 or

[email protected].

Thank you for your support!

Also, ESOL families, join us at the Public Library on October 24th at 10:30AM. We will have interpreters and assistance available in getting you and your child a library card. To receive a library card, parents need to bring a utility bill for proof of Cobb County residence.

The library is a great place to be!

News from East Cobb Middle SchoolWhen Eastvalley Elementary students graduate from our fabulous school, they will proceed on to East Cobb Middle School. During the year, we’ll be sharing a few of the activities happening at the middle school in hopes that our students and parents will be able to make a smooth transition when the time comes.

This month, Carrie Weatherford shares the latest news from the East Cobb Middle School Foundation:

In September, we had a blast at our Cosmic Bowling Event and raised money for ECMS at the same time. Congratulations to students Tanner Bradford and Shannon Redmond who had the top scores! Keep an eye out for future fundraisers such as our jewelry event in November. As always, the mission of the East Cobb Middle School Foundation is to support the students and staff of ECMS by raising funds and providing resources to support programs that are in alignment with the school’s mission of learning for living.

Red Ribbon Week. This program is designed to educate students

about the dangers of using drugs and alcohol. We encourage

parents to participate by discussing the dangers of drug use with

their students.

hung outside stating “PROUD OF OUR SAFE & DRUG FREE SCHOOL.” Heart and Teddy Bear

Posters stating “HUGS NOT DRUGS” will be placed in areas that students observe frequently.

Eastvalley counselor, Ms. James, has been stressing “Drug Awareness” and related activities with

our students. Each morning she will have an announcement and a lottery drawing. Tickets have

been given to the students and prizes will be awarded daily to each grade level.

DAILY EVENTS

Monday “DON’T LET DRUGS TURN YOU INSIDE OUT”. Students & staff are encouraged to

wear RED clothing turned INSIDE OUT.

Tuesday Students will receive Educational Activity Books that encourage them to be drug free

by believing in themselves, setting goals, and refusing to be involved with drugs.

Wednesday “Don’t Get Tied Up With Drugs or Alcohol”. Students and staff should wear the

craziest ties they can find.

Thursday “Choices- Drug Education” will be presented by Mr. Cliff Beaman with the American

Art Assemblies. He will provide education on smart healthy choices regarding drugs,

alcohol, tobacco & character.

It’s Time to Send in Box Tops!Have you ever noticed those little pink Box Top logos on many of your favorite products? Did you know that if you cut those out and turn them into Eastvalley Elementary, our PTA gets money? The more Box Tops we turn in, the more money we get toward special programs that support and inspire our children to achieve beyond the curriculum. (EVRC, E=MC2, field trips, etc)

We are dedicating October 19th - 23rd (that’s this week) to collecting as many box tops as we possibly can. Just cut them out and put them in a zip lock bag with your child’s name and their teacher’s name written on the outside of the bag. Then drop them off in the big pink collection box at the entrance of the school. We get 10 cents for every box top with the only limit being how many we are willing to collect!

For extra incentive, the class that collects the most box tops will win an ice cream party! So ask your family and friends to help you and your kids raise money for the programs that uplift our children.

Once you’ve turned in your box tops, remember to keep clipping and saving for our spring box top collection.

Turn Your Child’s Artwork into Special GiftsImagine your child’s art on...refrigerator magnets, coffee cups, stationery and much more. Your child has been busy creating a masterpiece in art class with Mrs. Landry. Square 1 Art lets your child show off their creativity to their biggest fans by turning that artwork into a truly special gift.

The Square 1 Art magnet and order form will be coming home in your child’s communication folder the week of October 19th. The magnet is yours to keep. Just send in the order form by October 29st and you’ll have the gifts back in plenty of time for Christmas!

Thanks in advance for your orders and for your support of Eastvalley!

Thank you Eastvalley Book Fair Volunteers. You Were Amazing!

The Media Staff would like to express its gratitude to a fantastic group of volunteers - their hard working hands and dedicated hearts were instrumental in helping us exceed last year’s bookfair sales by $3,000.00. Eastvalley is blessed to have such giving volunteers! Thank you so much!

Dedicated BooksWould you like to support the love of reading? With just a ten dollar donation, you may have a brand new book donated to the Eastvalley Media Center in the name of anyone you wish. This is a fun way to honor a relative, a teacher or a student while supporting Eastvalley’s Media Center. Donation forms may be picked up in the Media Center.

Congratulations to Maddie Zimmerman, Catherine Pyle, Rachel Larsen and Erik Larsen for making donations to our Dedicate-A-Book Program this year. We appreciate your gift and the dedicated books will be enjoyed by many students for years to come!

Eastvalley Reading ClubThe Eastvalley Reading Club (EVRC) has set this year’s goal at 25,000 points. Two months into the school year and we have already earned 4,833 points. It would be wonderful for each student to set an individual goal in order to help with our school wide goal. At the end of the school year, certificates will be given to students who earn 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 points. Last year a kindergartener earned 100 points and a fifth grader earned 500 points! Our school-wide goal is very doable, but we need everyone’s support!

Thank you so much for your support!
