Homecoming this year will be from October 4th to October 9th. Student Council will be having Spirit Week Days to help ignite the student body. The events we can hold will be in flux due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Traditionally we hold a mud volleyball tournament and bonfire during the weekend but won’t make those decisions until we are closer to Homecoming

After over 41 years of dedicated service to Friendship Central School, Dale Brown, Custodian/Bus Driver, has announced his retirement. We wish you all the best Mr. Brown! You will be greatly missed.

On July 28th Friendship Central School hosted their first annual community 5k run/walk. With assistance from the Friendship police department, we mapped out the best route possible to make sure all participants were able to run/walk safely. We had about 30 participants with everyone completing the 3.1 miles in under an hour! Our first-place participant was Claire Calhoun-Mullen with a completion time of 33.05. Not far behind, was our middle school English teacher, Jennie Norton, with a completion time of 33.09. Our third-place winner was Nikki Main with a completion time of 33.44. We were very happy with the turn out and cannot wait to host another 5k in the future!"

FCS Summer Discovery Junction Friendship Central School experienced a successful summer of activities for students, relatives and community members! At times we encountered a great deal of “commotion” happening in and around the building with all of our kiddos participating in activities.

With Mrs. May’s great idea of a tent to overcome some of these obstacles, we managed to serve our community with a wide variety of events the entire summer. Each grade level had something to choose from that would interest all motivated students, including music, art, story hour, summer school programs, field trips, cycling, to a variety of sports.

We are delighted to share that several parents attended activities we provided. We cherish our parent, grandparent and caregiver involvement!

As the school year nears, we anticipate a variety of activities for students to stay engaged and enhance their education! Watch for information on our front sign, website, flyers or Facebook page. Contact Jackie Dent in the Main office with questions.

Dear Parent/Guardians:

We are not using any products in our school building, which come under the regulation known as the PesticideNotification Education Law 409-h, however we will be using products to control ants, cockroaches, or any other unwantedinsects. We will use baits, jells, and granular products that contain boric acid and/or disodium octaborate tetahydrate. We may also use growth regulators so that the pests do not mature and breed if they should hatch out from eggs broughtinto the school on food products, containers, or by persons entering the building. Also, it may become necessary to use anaerosol to protect out students and staff from stinging and biting insects, which includes venomous spiders, bees, wasps, and hornets. These emergency applications are necessary, but if needed, will be done by certified pest control applicators.Rodent control will be accomplished by using cultural controls such as regular trash pick up, not leaving food items out toattract pests, and other sanitation methods. We will only use traps as a means of mechanical control because poisons aretoo hazardous to be used in a school setting.Weeding will control unwanted vegetation, or if application of a herbicide should be necessary to control poison ivy orother harmful weeds, it will occur over a long weekend that will nullify any harmful effects associated with the application.Anti-microbial products have been excused from notification law for reasons. Germs, fungi, and molds need to becontrolled for health reasons, and our school will be using them to control disease. This letter is sent to inform you of thedistrict’s plan to use the least toxic approach to pest control, and to outline the steps we are using to control unwantedpests. Our integrated pest management plan is designed to effectively manage pest control and continually monitor thesituation through feedback, monitors, and inspections. We will readjust and update the plan yearly to ensure the safetyand health of all building occupants.

Sincerely,Chad FriesSupervisor of Building, Grounds & Transportation

Class of 2021 Graduation

Lucy Brandes Saves the Mural When her art teacher Mrs. Welka informed the class that the class mural was going to be painted over and reassigned after the summer, Lucy was not having it. The mural originally started when Maegan LeFort wanted to draw a sunflower over the door, then DJ Yarbrough got others into it and it culminated into a class mural. The class shared what they wanted to have happen as the driving force behind the mural to unify their creative ideas. The idea became aliens attacking earth and the gnomes defending it. The idea got only partially done and the class stopped making progress, with it being only partially drawn. They dug in their heels leaving it stranded and only partially done. With no guarantees as to who would be taking Art again, Mrs Welka was set to scrap it. Lucy, who had been a major player in helping out, became the person who saved the mural from a can of primer. She came in during the summer and painted. Many saw her at school every day toiling away in the art room. A ride in was easy enough with her parents being Nicole Brandes, the librarian and John Brandes in the IT department. In August, Mrs. Welka was astounded when she arrived at school to set up her room. She found Lucy atop a ladder faithfully painting and beaming at her amazing reveal. She was found hammering out the details. She had done the painting of the mural and added in personal details and symbols to add in her artistic voice.

“I couldn’t have been more surprised or impressed. That was no easy feat. Even though I gave her permission, I completely underestimated the driving force of Lucy.”

Hello! My name is Meredith Anne Lang. I am the middle of three children and the daughter of two teachers, so the profession runs in the family! I am the proud aunt of two nieces. I currently live in Roulette, PA, but I am looking to move to Olean soon. I have lived in the region for most of my life, and I do enjoy living in this beautiful, mountainous area. I enjoy many things outside of my professional life, such as reading, writing, photography, and music. I play the mandolin and banjo, and recently have worked on learning how to sing properly, although you don’t need to ask me to! I also enjoy movies, watching TV, and cooking and baking, as well as spending time outside. I am happy to be part of the Friendship family and look forward to continuing to get to know everyone!

My name is Mrs. Audra Metz and I am the new second grade teacher here at Friendship Central School. I grew up here in Cuba and moved to Florida where I lived for the last 25 years with my husband, Shawn and our two sons, Daniel and Christopher. In Florida, I taught Kindergarten in a charter school and prior to that I was a director at a child development center. We decided to move back to the area to be with family and friends. Last year I was the full-time building substitute, and I got to work with all of the students from pre-k-12th grade. I am grateful for that experience and so excited to start this new journey with my very own class and students. A bit about my education - I graduated from SUNY Brockport with a BS in Psychology and continued my education in Florida at Florida Atlantic University where I graduated with a Masters in Education with a major in Early Childhood Education. It is my personal goal to create a consistent, warm environment where each child will feel safe and confident to learn.
