Dear Eastvalley Families,

It is amazing that time passes so quickly. It seems like it was yester-

day that we were welcom-ing you back to another

year and here it is, the holidays. I hope that your holiday season, whatever it is that you celebrate, will be a time for joy and peace. Take some time to be with family and friends to celebrate each other. Read with your child, there is no better gift you can give them!

I’d like to thank all the teachers, parapros, bus driv-ers, lunchroom staff, custodians, and office staff for a wonderful beginning to our year. Everyone works hard each day to make sure your child has a safe, clean and wonderful learning environment. There are a lot of you that come in and volunteer in many different ways each and every day. That helps us do our jobs better and we appreciate your time and efforts.

Eastvalley is certainly a “Little School with a Big Heart” and it showed during our United Way fund-raiser, canned food drive, and holiday giving tree. All of those will help citizens in Cobb County and some of our very own families have a better holiday. Thank you for being so generous.

If you are traveling this holiday season, please be safe. Our winter break will begin at 2:30 on December 18 and students will return to school on Tuesday, January 5.

Enjoy and we’ll see you in 2010.

A Letter From Our Eastvalley PTA Presidents

Dear Eastvalley Students, Staff and Parents,

We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday and had the opportunity to spend quality time with family and friends. Even when times seem tough, we are lucky here at Eastvalley to be part of such a fabulous group of teachers, staff, and fami-lies. It’s always nice to reflect upon those things for which we are thankful. We are truly thankful for so many things and would like to mention a few.

We would like to thank all the families that contrib-uted to the food drive. These items will be greatly appreciated by the recipients. We would also like to thank the teachers for their contributions to the raffles during Friends and Family luncheon. The students get such a thrill out of these special events with their teachers. Thanks as well to Ms. Wacker and Dr. Doolittle for agreeing to give up their positions for a day…this is always a big honor for the winners.

Last, but not least, thanks to the Food Dude and his staff for the wonderful Thanksgiving meal during the luncheon. We are very grateful to Mr. Mark Trott, for all that he does for us at Eastvalley.

Remember that the last day of school before the holidays is December 18th, and students return on Tuesday, January 5th. We would like to wish every-one a happy, safe and peaceful Holiday Season.

Your Eastvalley PTA Co-Presidents,

Tammy Feilmeier and Kristen Pyle

Page 35th Grade Reflections on Red Ribbon Week

I learned that when you try a drug one time, it feels really good, then you have to try it again and again to get that same feeling. If you decide to do drugs, you’re doing it at your own risk. -- Kyle McParland

The show helped me learn about how drugs can harm your body, and is very unhealthy. I think it was a great learning experience for me because I think I learn better when something is drawn. -- William Antoniades

What I learned was not to smoke cigarettes because it’s poison for my body. I don’t like to smoke, or be around smokers because you can smell it and it can affect your body. I also learned that you can be successful without cigarettes. Smoking can kill you or give you cancer. -- Xavier Johnson

What I liked about the presentation from Red Ribbon Week was the picture the man made and how he reminded us the dangers of drugs. Some of the things I learned was it’s easy to say “no” to drugs, and how harmful alcohol can be. -- Catherine Pyle

I learned that it is very important to not smoke. I thought the drawing was very neat and the music was too. This is the best thing they have done with Red Ribbon Week. -- Brianna Pirtle

Thank You Peggy JordanEastvalley PTA would like to say a special thanks to Peggy Jordan for her many years of organizing Red Ribbon Week

at Eastvalley. Mrs. Jordan is retiring from Eastvalley’s Red Ribbon Week after this year and we will greatly miss her.

Thank you, Peggy, for all of your hard work.

Mrs. Hathcoat’s 1st Grade Shape ShowMrs. Hathcoat’s class has been studying geometric shapes in math. On Wednesday, November 12th, the students modeled in a shape show in which they identified their shape and described its attributes. The performers and their shapes were: Faith Edge – Parallelogram, Daniel Jones – Rhombus, Will Mahoney – Pentagon, Gabriel Chung – hexagon, Cierrah Walker – Rectangle, Will Fleming – Square, Sydney Shushan – Triangle, and Josh Cary – Circle. Mrs. Amber Shushan filmed the entire shape show. Now Mrs. Hathcoat thinks they are ready for the “Geometry” runway!

Eastvalley Holiday Giving Tree - “Wish Upon a Star”

The Holiday Giving Tree provides families in need with the opportunity to receive

gifts for the holiday. Please consider helping

us this holiday season. Every year the “Holiday Giving Tree” helps several families in our school community. It is a wonderful chance to show your child the joy of giving. This year, we have added something new to the “Holiday Giving Tree”. On the tree there are stars with a child’s wish for the holiday. If you are inter-ested in making a child’s wish come true this holiday season, the next time you are at Eastvalley, please select a star off the tree.

• Purchase the item that is listed on the star • Wrap the gift and tape the star to the gift • Bring the wrapped gift and place it under the “Holiday Giving Tree” by December 14th

If you don’t have time to pick up a gift, we welcome your donation in the form of a Gift Card. The dollar amount is at your discretion.

Hearing & Vision Screening 2009

On November 16th and 17th, all 1st and 4th graders were screened for potential hearing and vision difficulties, which may impact learning ability. Here at Eastvalley, we have a strong tradition of supportive parents who are generous with their time and energy, helping to make our screening an efficient success.

This year, over 200 students were tested. Students who did not pass the initial screening were retested on November 20th. If the second screen-ing revealed possible problems, a parent notification letter with instructions was mailed home. It is very important that the student receive a follow-up examination, which will be at no cost. Working together, we can give the students of Eastvalley the edge for success.

A huge thank you to Lisa Favro and Mario Quinones, who volunteered their time and helped make this happen. Finally, an enormous thank you to our testers: Cindy Moran, Stacey Dillenger, Krissy Graba, Beth Lauria, Pam Mullen, and Ashley Staley. Each and every one of you was critical in this worthwhile cause. Doreen WaugamanHearing & Vision Committee Chairperson

Congratulations to our Top Bananas in the

Sally Foster Fundraiser! Our top three sellers for the Foundation’s Fall Fundraiser are Jacob Jeffords, Ian Fraser and Claire Boggess. These three students did not monkey around! Jacob sold 79 items, Claire sold 53 items and Ian sold 52 items. They earned a $60 gift card to Toys r Us.

Banana Split Party Winners - sold 30 or more items (siblings combined numbers) to attend a banana split party: Devon Walcott, Katelyn Allen, Jared Loncar, Christopher Jones, William Witcher, Ronnie & Liat Klemm, Maddie & Charlie Zimmerman, Jamie & Jake Jones, Sydney Shushan, Claire Boggess, P.J. Goodloe, Jackson Tucker, Zaedin Salerno, Natalie & Nicholas Aluisy, John Michael, Shannon, & Kevin Murray, Emma & Ian Fraser, Jacob Jeffords, Blake Feilmeier, Harrison & Catherine Pyle, Brianna Pirtle, Pavlina Jones.

We had 134 students join the Monkey Club by selling at least 12 items. These students received either a Sally or Foster plush monkey and had their picture with their monkey posted on the Monkey Club board during the fundraiser.

A special thank you goes to Ms. Wacker for her enthusiastic support and daily promotion of the fundraiser. Also, thanks to all of our student sellers, parents, volunteers, teachers and staff for going bananas for our 2009 Fall Fundraiser and making it a huge success.

Our students sold $29,614 of products and Eastvalley Foundation received approximately $14,132. This money purchased 5 sets of Senteo response systems to be used with interactive whiteboards. Teachers can poll answers to questions and post them to the class anonymously. This helps them better respond to individual and classroom needs. We will also replace the audio cd listening centers for kindergarten through 2nd grades.
