Dear Eastvalley Family,

As you know, one of my passions is raising awareness and funds for The American Cancer Society. I am passionate about this cause because cancer has touched my life personally with many relatives and friends battling the disease.

In September 2003, I went home to Mobile for Labor Day weekend and was met with the news that my cousin was diagnosed with breast cancer. She’s always been my “little sister” and my best friend. I was devastated to hear this news. At the time she had 3 children under the age of 12 and a husband serving our country in Kuwait. On the day of her scheduled surgery she called me at my school office to tell me that the plans had changed and she would be having a mastectomy instead of a lumpectomy. Again, we were devastated. We cried and prayed together before she went into surgery. I went to chemo treatments with her when I could and spent weekends with her in Mobile as often as possible.

I am happy to report she is cancer free and back teaching first graders where she belongs. She is my hope, strength and inspiration every day. This is why I participate in Relay for Life each and every year, trying to raise funds so that no family has to dread a diagnosis of cancer ever again. We need to find a cure.

Relay for Life is May 6 at Jim Miller Park beginning with the survivor lap at 7:00 p.m. I invite all of you to come to the event and celebrate with us. Cancer survivors from our own Eastvalley staff will be walking and we’d love for everyone to be there to cheer them on! The luminary ceremony, lighting of candles for all those that have battled cancer, begins at 10:00 p.m. and is my personal favorite of the entire event. It is a time for us to celebrate and remember those friends and family who have been so courageous in their fight. Please come join us!! Email me if you would like any more information. If you are a cancer survivor, we would love for you to join us at Relay for Life and let us celebrate you! There is a special reception for cancer survivors that begins at 5:30 and then the survivor lap at 7:00 which starts with a balloon release. It is awesome to hear everyone cheering for the cancer survivors during that lap. If you are a cancer survivor, you can contact me at [email protected] or you can go directly online to www.cobbrelay.org and register for this event! We Relay in your honor!!

There are a few more ways you can help us in our quest to find a cure. Information on last minute fundraisers has been sent home with your child. The Relay team members work diligently with each fundraiser to raise awareness for The American Cancer Society. We could not do this without your support! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

3rd Quarter Perfect Attendance AwardEastvalley is excited to announce the winner of the third quarter perfect attendance bicycle award! Eastvalley’s Partner

in Education Horace Mann Insurance generously donated the bicycle as a perfect attendance

incentive.

Students with perfect attendance during the third quarter were eligible to

win the bicycle. Perfect attendance is bell-to-bell attendance without being

tardy or leaving early from school. All of the eligible students’ names were

in a hat and the random drawing selected Eric Terry from Ms. Branham’s

fifth grade class as the grand prize winner. Congratulations Eric! Horace

Mann Insurance will donate one more bicycle for a fourth quarter drawing.

Good luck to all Eastvalley Eagles!

First Graders Make Greenhouses

The teachers gave each student their own greenhouse, some lima beans,

and a wet napkin. They hung their greenhouses in the classroom windows,

and the kids watched their seeds grow into plants over a two week period. They

loved them!

Right on TargetOn March 23, the fourth and fifth grade Target students traveled

down to the Sope Creek area of the Chattahoochee River Park to

investigate and observe frog life. Ranger Jerry Hightower led us

in a field study at Sibley pond located in the park. Students ob-

served pond life and identified living organisms by sifting through

pond leaves and shoreline debris.

We found salamanders, tadpoles, water bugs, musk turtles, drag-

onfly larvae, damsel fly larvae, wolf spider, and a bull frog. We

will return to Sibley Pond in May to observe changes in the pond

habitat. The students are currently creating their very own frog

species and will present their creations at our Frog Fiesta at the

end of our unit.

The second and third grade Target students have been investigat-

ing and researching the human heart. Students have learned the

anatomy of the heart, and they are now learning about physical

problems and treatments. Recently, students created a model

of “blood” by using corn syrup as plasma and then other items

(beans, rice, pasta) to represent red blood cells, white blood cells,

etc.

We appreciate Mrs. Chalker (parent at Eastvalley) coming to

share her medical background and modeling to the class how

to measure blood pressure. Each student learned to take their

blood pressure and how to interpret their systolic and diastolic

number.

Eastvalley Teams Compete in “Odyssey of the Mind” TournamentEastvalley sent three teams to compete in this year’s Odyssey of the Mind Tournament. Odyssey of the Mind is a world-wide creative problem-solving competition for children in Kindergarten through college. To compete in a tournament, a team of 7 students must work together to solve a “long-term” problem, as defined by the Odyssey of the Mind problem captains, and must also compete in a“spontaneous” problem solving segment.

Each of these teams worked tirelessly to solve their long-term problem in the form of a skit, and spent countless hours practicing for the ‘spontaneous’ segment of the competition. The Odyssey of the Mind teams began their practicing in August of the school year. The regional tournaments were held in February and March. Eastvalley is very proud of all 21 of these students’ hard work, dedication, and accomplishments! Many thanks go out to the Coaches for volunteering their time and energy to guide these children through the process, and prepare them for the competition. We would also like to thank the parents of these students as well for their support and encouragement throughout this seven-month process.

CONGRATULATIONS to our team of third and fourth graders who solved the “Le Tour Guide” problem. The team was coached by Melissa Chalker and Colleen Casey. Also competing was a team of fourth and fifth graders, solving the “Mouse Mobiles” problem -- coached by Leslie Singer and Lisa Favro. Both teams did an amazing job at the Regional competition!

The third team competing was a team of Fifth Graders – also solving the “Le Tour Guide” problem, and being coached by Sue Larsen and Suzanne Gardiner. This team of Fifth Graders has advanced to the State Finals, to be held at Columbus State University on April 16th. Stay tuned for the results of the State Competition!

If your child is interested in joining an Eastvalley Odyssey of the Mind Team for the 2011-2012 school year, please look for more information to come your way as school re-opens in August - or contact Sue Larsen at: [email protected].

Necessitams encontrar a cura.

Karen Wacker, Diretora
