A Noodle Night to RememberThis year is our 50th anniversary at Eastvalley. As part of our celebration, we had a Noodle Night for our fall festival to commemorate past fall events at Eastvalley.

What a HUGE success it was with more than half of our school participating.

It was a gorgeous night for an evening of family fun provided by PTA through

donations from our wonderful Eastvalley families. The tables were decorated

beautifully with tea lights and pumpkin center pieces full of flowers. There were

inflatables, hair painting, tattoos, karaoke, music, popcorn, ice cream, snow cones

and hot, delicious pasta from Saporito’s. We had several Eastvalley families who

won Bingo and received awesome tickets to Disney on Ice and the Hawks.

As the darkness fell, our talented students sang karaoke while others danced to

the music. Although much has changed in the last 50 years, the wonderful spirit

of Eastvalley remains the same! (See more great pictures on the next page)

Page 3A Letter From Our PrincipalDear Eastvalley Family,

We want to thank all of you that visited Eastvalley last week for conferences with your teachers. The time spent talking about your child and the partnership between home and school is well worth it. We look forward to working together with you to help your child reach their individual potential. Please remember that anytime you feel the need to meet with your child’s teacher, just send a note or call the teacher to schedule an appointment.

One of our Partners in Education, Horace Mann Insurance, has donated 4 bicycles to Eastvalley to use as attendance incentives. At the end of each nine weeks, we will check to see which students had perfect attendance for that nine weeks. Remember, perfect attendance is bell-to-bell with no tardies and no early checkouts from school. A student must be present at school all day, every day. We will draw one name from all the names and award a bicycle to the lucky student. We will do that for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th nine weeks. That means we have one bicycle left! We will award that bicycle to one student who has perfect attendance for ALL of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th nine

weeks combined. We thank M.A. McDonald from Horace Mann for helping us improve attendance at Eastvalley.

Remember that Tuesday, November 2 is a student holiday due to the school being used as a voting precinct. Exercise your right to vote!

Please continue reading my blog each week at www.eastvalleyelementary.com. Karen Wacker Principal

A Letter From our Eastvalley PTA PresidentsDear Eastvalley Students, Staff and Parents,

School is definitely underway…It has been an exciting few weeks full of activities and fun. Noodle Night was a great success! It was a pleasure to see all the families enjoying dinner and an evening of entertainment. We’d like to thank our parent volunteers and Partners in Education for making the night so much fun.

Congratulations to all who made the cut off for our first Books for Breakfast of the school year (now sponsored by Chick-fil-A). Keep reading! If you didn’t make it this time, keep working hard to make the next deadline, December 17th. Also, don’t forget to visit the First in Math website, www.firstinmath.com. Keep calculating!

Our next PTA meeting will be Thursday, November 4th at 6:30pm and we hope to see you all there. Our 1st graders will be performing at the meeting. Thanks again to those parents, relatives, neighbors and students who have joined the PTA and have donated their money and/or time for our programs. Your support means so much to

us. Remember, it’s never too late to join the PTA. Please contact us for information.

We know that all of the activities, homework and paperwork can sometimes be overwhelming, but just know that all of our combined efforts are for the good of our children and our school. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us at [email protected] or [email protected]. Happy Fall!

Page 4Eastvalley Foundation Update October 2010

The Eastvalley Elementary Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising funds to enrich the educational experience of our children here at Eastvalley. We raise funds to provide resources and programs that go above and beyond what the school’s budget can provide.

*New Laminator for Eastvalley! The Foundation purchased a much needed new laminator in September. The teachers use the laminator every day making flashcards, posters and many other learning tools for their classrooms. The Foundation is happy to provide our teachers with the new laminator.

*Sally Foster is coming! Our big Sally Foster fundraiser kicks off October 26th! Their program is different this year, we will be selling gift cards to friends and family instead of ordering specific catalog items, and everything ships direct to the home. Be on the lookout for more information in your child’s communi-cation folder.

*Eastvalley 50th Anniversary Site, www.eastvalleyis50.comThanks to the hard work of our webmaster, Geoffrey Osborne, the Foundation has created a website commemorating Eastvalley’s 50 years of education. Help us build the history of Eastvalley by visiting www.eastvalleyis50.com and uploading your photos and stories there. Donations are also accepted. And please let other Eastvalley alumni know about the site.

* Spirit NightWe hope to see you at Saporito’s on November 9th for our next Spirit Night. Please join us and other Eastvalley families for fun, food and fundraising. A portion of the evening’s proceeds is donated to the Eastvalley Foundation.

*Donors ChooseIn October, the Foundation met with all the Eastvalley teachers and helped them get set up on Donors Choose, an online grant site just for public school teachers. Each teacher can now request a project or special item through the site. Search for your child’s teacher at www.donorschoose.org to see if you can contribute to their project.

Page 5Red Ribbon Week 2010October 25th-29th

This October will mark the anniversary of Red Ribbon Week. In 1985, drug traffickers in Mexico killed Federal drug enforcement agent Enrique Camarena. In response to his death, angered parents across the country began wearing Red Ribbons to symbolize their commitment toward the creation of a drug free America. Congress officially proclaimed the first National Red Ribbon Week, October 23-31, 1988. The Red Ribbon has now become a symbol for the drug free movement.

Our students will be recognizing Red Ribbon Week with a week of lessons presented by the counselors on drug prevention and special spirit days and activities. We will have messages about healthy choices on morning announcements and a special assembly. Parents will be invited to their child’s P.E. enrichment time to participate with the students in a Walk Against Drugs. The following schedule shows what the students can do throughout the week to show their support for Red Ribbon Week.

Students may bring in a canned good for community outreach and receive a sticker throughout the week.

Monday the 25th: Wear RED Day and Pledge to Be Drug Free Students can wear red on this day and will be signing pledges in their classes to live drug-free. Pencils with ”I pledge to be drug free” will be passed out in homerooms. Classes will place their signed pledge and red ribbon outside their classroom door.

Tuesday the 26th: “Drugs and I Don’t Mix”. “ I CAN be free.” Students show that they choose to be drug free by wearing mismatched or crazy socks or clothes.

Wednesday the 27th: “Team Up Against Drugs” Day Students wear a shirt or jersey that represents their favorite sports team.

Thursday the 28th: “We’re Too Bright to do Drugs” Students can look bright by wearing bright clothes and sunglasses.

Friday the 29th: Wear School Spirit Shirts and “Give Drugs the Slip” Students wear slippers with their school spirit shirt.

Music News from Dr. Bernard

First Graders to Perform November 4thAll the Eastvalley 1st graders will perform a few

Thanksgiving songs at the November 4th PTA meeting!

District Honor Chorus!Eastvalley is proud to have six students in the Georgia

Music Educators Association District Honor Chorus this

year! The event consists of an all-day rehearsal and then

a 6 PM concert on Thursday, October 28. The District

Honor Chorus participants first learn the difficult music at

school in before-school

rehearsals, and then combine with other talented singers and a renowned director to present

a free public concert. There is no competition involved, just the joy and challenge of singing

difficult music with other gifted musicians! The event will be held this year at the

Mt. Paran North Church of God. We hope to see you there!

Page 9Become a 100 Club & 100+ Club MemberOur children need to know addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division math facts for math success. By the 100th day of school, our teachers expect all Eastvalley students to meet the expectations listed below and become members of our “100 Club”. The students can also challenge themselves to become members in the “100+ Club”.

When a student becomes a member of the 100 Club, the teacher will write the student’s name and teacher’s name on the color-coded grade level star and send the stars to the office in the attendance folder. The student’s name will be announced on the afternoon announcements and posted on the 100 Club Wall of Fame in the cafeteria. When a student becomes a 100+ club member, the teacher will put a sticker on the 100 Club star. Congratulations to all 100 Club and 100+ Club students!

Eastvalley Yearbook -- Photo Coordinators needed ASAP for K-5th grades!

The photo coordinator will be responsible for getting photos of class and school events from the

teachers and parents and submitting them to the yearbook committee. We need a parent volunteer

from each grade. The photos will need to be burned onto a disc and labeled so that we can edit them

using the yearbook publishing software. If you are interested, please contact Dee Anne Warwick,

[email protected] or Paige DeMent, [email protected].

We are working on getting a box so that parents can submit photos burned on disc as well. If you have photos to sub-

mit, please contact us so we can get them from you. Thank you.

Boosterthon Fun Run 2010 Final Results

Great job Eastvalley students and families! We have collected 96% of what was pledged and that totals $25,220! The classes who brought in the most pledges were Mrs. Moot, Mrs. Zajac and Mr. Davis. Congratulations to 2nd grader, Solomon Welfare for earning the highest overall individual pledges and to kindergartner, Emaline Rault who was close on his heels with a very impressive first showing!

Hats off to our students for LAUNCHING an incredible fundraiser and for learning how to be great LEADERS. A big thank you goes to Ms. Wacker, Dr. Doolittle, all our Coaches (Cobb County’s finest teachers), our fabulous Room Reps and their dedicated coordinator, and Eastvalley Staff for rising to the occasion and keeping up with the Boosterthon Team’s energy and enthusiasm. Thank you to our volunteers on the day of the Fun Run and to the tireless water station workers who kept our runners well hydrated. Finally, one more thank you to Eastvalley parents. Our school may be small, but your dedication and commitment to seeing it and our children succeed is HUGE!
