Student Signatures in SpaceIn the Fall of 2009, Eastvalley Elementary was chosen to participate in “Student Signatures in Space” in celebration of Space Day. Our school was given a poster for students to sign before it went off to space.

The poster went on a mission aboard the Space Shuttle and was then returned to Eastvalley, along with a photograph of the mission crew. It was especially exciting because NASA’s Space Shuttle program is winding down, and very few schools have the opportunity to participate in this great honor. You can see the poster and photo of the mission crew displayed right next to the cafeteria.

Page 2A Letter From Our PrincipalHi Eastvalley Family,

Happy Summer!!!! Eastvalley is undergoing a major construction project this summer thanks to your SPLOST dollars. I wanted everyone to know what will be happening to our school during the summer weeks. Before we break for summer, all teachers and staff members (yep, even me!) have to pack everything in our classrooms and offices. Technology will be removed and stored elsewhere in the county while the construction is taking place.

On the construction list will be:1. Sprinklers throughout the building2. New lighting throughout the building3. A new clock system throughout the building4. New flush valves in all the bathrooms5. A new hot water heater6. A new sidewalk & awning that will go from the from the front door all the way to the gym - a beautiful design too!!7. New sidewalks and awnings to all the trailers8. A new fire road to allow access of a fire truck during an emergency to the back of the school

We are so excited that all of these improvements will be taking place here at Eastvalley. Unfortunately, it does mean the building will be completely shut down to everyone. I actually will be working at another school this summer, because I will not be allowed in my office. What that means for you is that you will not be able to come up during the summer to pick up any records or register your child on any given day. If you call the school during the summer, the phone calls will be transferred automatically to my “summer” office. Please understand that I cannot access any records if you call me over the summer. We’ll have to wait until we are allowed back in to the school after construction is complete to get those records.

We will have a registration day for new students July 27 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. We have been told we will be allowed in the cafeteria only on that day to get registration done. Please bring: certified copy of birth certificate, Social Security card, Immunization form, Vision, Hearing and Dental form, 2 proofs of residency in the Eastvalley attendance zone and picture ID. Any records (report cards, testing) from a previous school would also be very helpful if the child is entering any grade except Kindergarten. Please call the office if you have other questions about registration (770-578-7214).

Enjoy your summer vacation! School starts August 15 at 7:50 a.m.

A Letter From our Eastvalley PTA PresidentsHi Eastvalley Families,

What a great year! It’s hard to believe the end of the school year is here. It has been a pleasure to serve as your PTA Co-Presidents this year. We have planned and executed many fun family events, learned a few things and really enjoyed helping the Little School with a Big Heart. We could not have done any of it without the help of so many of you

giving up your valuable time and lots of effort. Thank you for all your hard work!

A quick note: Be sure to check the school website for information about pre-ordering school supplies. We would like to offer this as an option and as of Eagle Eyes press time, are working hard to get this accomplished. If you have

any questions, please contact Becki Goodloe at [email protected].

We hope everyone has a great summer. Please be safe, get outside, relax and most of all, have FUN! The new school year will be here before you know it. By the way, if you’d like to get a head start on your Reflections entries this summer, the theme for the 2011-12 school year is “Diversity means…..” For more information, go to www.georgiapta.org. We’ll see you next year!

Page 5Wagons Ho! Fourth Grade Land Grab!

Fourth graders participated in a Land Grab simulation activity on May 3rd. The students formed groups, planned for

their supplies, and constructed a homestead for the activity.

To gain a “Deed” to their land, the pioneers had to have

a mode of transportation (wagon/horses), stake off a 10

foot by 10 foot claim, build a house, “farm crops”, and

stay on the claim for five years. Life wasn’t easy in the

West, as our fourth grade pioneers found out! The West

was filled with bandits and claim jumpers. The students

learned so much about life on the frontier, even experi-

encing a mini “gold-rush!” Thanks to our parent

volunteers for making this great learning opportunity

possible!

Media Center News Mrs. Janice Ritt, Media Specialist Ms. Cindy Moran, Media Paraprofessional

Eastvalley Elementary School is known for its wonderful readers…and we have the statistics to back up this statement!

Newbery AwardThe Eastvalley Newbery Award was created in 2005 to encourage our students to read a higher caliber of books and

to take on an individual challenge. This year we are proud to honor nineteen students, the highest number of winners

ever! Congratulation goes to: Joseph Coles, Gabriel Cibrian, Shoshana Sangros, Andrew Long, Shun Cunningham, Sydney Agans, Drashti Zalavadia, Mason Favro, Anna Freeman, Margaret Blakeley, Radha Changela, Xavier Conway, Farah Abaza, Archisha Ghosh, Lindsey Rhyne, Raymond Shen, Aubrie Holcomb, Charlie Zimmerman, and Megan Bunch.

Four of these students have won this award before. They are: Anna Freeman, Margaret Blakeley, Archisha Ghosh, and Mason Favro. Each one of these students has passed over twenty Newbery book AR tests with an 80% or more.

First Student to Read al 89 Newbery Award BooksWe are very proud of the fact that this is Mason Favro’s fourth time earning the Newbery award. However, Mason did not stop at reading just forty Newbery

Award books. He decided to make up his own challenge and read all 89 Newbery

Award Books. Finding books that were published 89 years ago was a challenge in

itself. With the support and encouragement of his parents, Mason located and read

all 89 books. To our knowledge, Mason is the first student at Eastvalley, as well as

the first student in Cobb County to accomplish this! Mason demonstrates that he

strives to do more than what is expected of him! We believe this attitude will take

him far in life. We are looking forward to honoring Mason’s unique achievement at

the Fifth Grade Awards Assembly in May. Congratulations, Mason!
