Dear Eastvalley Families,

February was a month of showing how we care for each other on Valentine’s Day. Personally, I think it should be that way every day. All of us need to take the time to tell and show our loved ones how much we appreciate them more than one day a year. I certainly need to do a better job with the teachers, students and families of Eastvalley. It’s very easy to get caught up in the little stuff that goes on in our lives daily and neglect the important people around us. So, to each and every one of you…I appreciate the sup-port you have shown the staff at Eastvalley, including myself. To the staff, I appreciate your dedi-cation to the children and their needs. To the students, I appreciate your positive attitude towards learning and other children.

In reading articles on praising children, the experts in the field say that when praising your child, effective praise should be:

1. Superenthusiastic (think head cheerleader) 2. Specific to the desired behavior. Don’t say “Good job!” Instead say, “I like the way you put away your toys when you were finished.” 3. Reinforced with a smile or a touch. 4. Frequent --..Too much praise is never an issue, unless its just superficial. 5. Immediately following the desired behavior, or as soon as you know about it (positive notes home from the teacher should be addressed right away).

Again, I will work to increase my use of effective praise with all the significant people in my life. I hope I have helped inspire you to do the same. I hope you all had a Happy Valentine’s Day!

Hi Eastvalley Families, We hope that you had a great time at International Night. Thank you to Alanne Orjoux for organizing the event, but especially to all the wonderful families that brought in tokens and food from their countries to share. It was great to see how many countries we all represent. The PTA Nominating Committee has been elected, and is looking for parents and staff to serve on the PTA Executive Board. If you would like to serve your school by holding a position next school year, please contact Jyl Ozkan or Alanne Orjoux. The months are ticking away, but it doesn’t mean that we are done making an impact. We still have some great events coming up. Please continue to support our children, staff, and school. As always, if there is anything we can help you with, please feel free to contact us. Your PTA Co-Presidents, Marlene Kassens and Tammy Feilmeier

Look Who’s Talking Books Look Who's Talking Books students stand out in reading for various reasons such as being model readers, achieving personal goals, and/or making great progress. Here are the Look Who's Talking Books students for February 2009:

The Eastvalley PTA’s International Night on Friday, Jan. 23rd was a big success, thanks to the families that represented 20 different countries and generously shared their heritage, culture and cuisine. The evening was also enhanced by the per-formance of international songs by the 2nd grade classes, as well as the artistry and talent of Richard Bernard, renowned musician, and yes -- the brother of our own wonderful music teacher and chorus director, Mr. Anthony Bernard.

EASTVALLLEY EAGLE CHORUS WINS OUTSTANDING MUSICAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD!

The Eastvalley Eagle Chorus was the recipient of the Outstanding Musical Achievement Award at the Broadway Junior Theater Fes-tival!

Chorus Members attended this once in a lifetime event held at the Atlanta Hilton on January 17th and 18th. The children performed in front of judges, who were ex-

perts in the field of music, acting, and choreography. They attended work-shops throughout the two days to learn how to hone their acting skills, and increase their self-confidence. The two day event culminated with a trip to the Cobb Energy Center to see the Broadway touring musical “Hairspray”. An amazing experience for the children!

Despite being the youngest group in the competition, they worked together as a team and rose to the occasion. It wasn't easy to beat all those high school and middle school kids from all over the country (and Canada), but we did it! Be proud of your kids! We are!

The trophy is on display in the music room.

A special thank-you goes out to directors Mr. Bernard, Mrs. Steinheimer and Dr. Cunningham! Thanks, too, to all the chaperones who helped keep our children safe, and in tow, over the course of the weekend trip!
