A Letter From Our Principal

Dear Eastvalley Family,

The school year draws to a close which is both a happy and sad time for us in the school. We love working with your children every day and will miss interacting with them on a daily basis. We also know that it’s time for a break and we are happy to be able to spend additional time with our own families to renew and re-energize for next year.

We congratulate our wonderful teachers who are retiring at the end of the year! Mary Savage, Sue Barsh, Cathy DuBose and Sharon Volk are looking forward to a new chapter in their lives. We congratulate them and will miss them.

We have other teachers who will unfortunately not be returning due to moving, resignations, limited contracts or budget cuts. We will miss these fabulous teachers here at Eastvalley - Casey Pitoniak, Jill O’Meara, Audrey Jinks, Ann Klueter, Hope Cochran, Diane Cordova, Virginia Morgan, Colleen Grierson, Sue Blue, Melissa Levinson, Deidra Amon and Sarah Covington. We wish all of them well in future endeavors.

I hope that each of you has a wonderful summer! Take some time to read with your child on a daily basis. Be safe on any trips that you take. We will see you back here on Thursday, August 5th for the first day of school. Karen Wacker Principal

granddaughters was in my class and she was there all the time! The first time I saw her at Eastvalley, I thought, “Wait a minute! What is she doing here?” Little did I know that she had been at this volunteering thing a very long time! Rumor has it, and I think I believe it, that she used to have her own office at Eastvalley since she was there so much! Thank you so much Peggy for all you have done, not just for your own children and grandchildren, but all of ours as well! Kristen Pyle

A Letter From our Eastvalley PTA PresidentsDear Eastvalley Family,

What a great year! I find it hard to believe that the end of school is here already. It has been our pleasure to serve as your PTA Co-Presidents this year. We have planned and executed many fun family events, learned a few things, and really enjoyed making Eastvalley a great little school. We could not have done any of it without the help of so many of you giving up your valuable time and lots of effort. Thank you for all your hard work!

We would like to welcome our PTA Officers for the 2010-2011 school year:

Co-Presidents: Janie Bunch & Tai Terry Co-Secretaries: Tammy Ross & Amanda BuelCo-Vice Presidents: Tammy Feilmeier & Becki Goodloe Treasurer: Sandy Welfare

We thank them for their willingness to take on these positions and serve our school. Let’s give them our support for the upcoming school year.

And congratulations to Emily Zoino of Wheeler High School for winning the Eastvalley scholarship. Great job Emily!

As the school year winds down, we hope everyone has a great summer. Please be safe, relax, get outside, and most of all, have FUN! A new year will be here before we know it…see you then!

Page 4Kindergarten “CITY DAY”The Kindergarten classes held their annual City Day on April 28 and April 29 this year. What a great time the children

had going shopping for a favorite stuffed animal, getting their driver’s licenses, visiting the wellness center, eating

popcorn while watching a favorite movie – and in the process, learning a bit about ‘money’ and enhancing their Math

skills! The kindergarten room reps and teachers worked together to make this day a great success and so much fun

for the children. A special thanks to the following kindergarten room reps for coordinating the activities of this day:

Sue Larsen, Michelle Zimmerman, Christine Jones, Lisa Lewis, Kari Norman and Holly Shetty. Thanks so much

to all the great kindergarten parents who volunteered their time on this day as well! Here are a few highlights ....

Fourth Graders Move West! Our fourth graders participated in a project that simulated the Land Grab of Westward expansion. Our students brought wagons, horses and materials to stake their claims and establish homesteads. Many dressed in pioneer garb and planted crops to create a home. Parent volunteers staffed the town store where students could purchase corn muffins and beans for “gold nuggets”. The students had a wonderful time learning more about how “The West was Won!”

Thanks to all those that helped make this a fantastic and memorable experience for our students! ~ Your Fourth Grade Teachers

From our Student Council Secretary, 4th grader, Mason FavroWe here at Student Council would like to inform you of the various activities of your student council. The beginning of our activities was the simple annual carnation sale, or at least it looked simple on the outside. What really happened was: we ordered the carnations which came out of our relatively small budget. We then decided on prices which did not take very long, but we were astonished with the success of this small fundraiser. We sold out!

Some of our proceeds went to Relay for Life, so you helped fund research to find a cure for cancer. We also worked with Ms. Sloan’s son (who is in Afghanistan but NOT in the military so don’t get the wrong idea) to help give school supplies to orphans in Afghanistan. Some small things we have here, like pencils and stickers, are a BIG treat to children in Afghanistan. A big thank you from the children in Afghanistan to everyone who gave something.

Our budget has gotten bigger since the carnation sale and we are now looking at ways to use it to make the school better. We are making some headway on this and will let you know what we decide to do. ~ Sincerely, The officers and representatives of Student Council

Page 8Interested in Robotics at Eastvalley?I’m looking for rising 4th & 5th grade parents who might be interested in helping start a robotics team at Eastvalley. No prior experience or technical knowledge is necessary. The team would consist of 4th & 5th grad-ers and the primary time commitment would be during the fall (start of school through December). Please contact Susie Cary, [email protected], if you are interested or want more information. We will try to begin forming the team over the summer.

Please also contact me if your 4th or 5th grade student is interested in participating, but be aware that we will not start a team unless there is adequate parent support.

Pictured above are Muiz yoonis, Maddie Nicholas, Josie Bertrand, and emma Fraser.

This group of students did an independent research project on rain forest animals. They worked on their research during recess and even met at Josie’s house to finish it over the weekend. They provided written information, detailed drawings, and a great presentation of their findings to the class.

Media Center Thank YouThe Media Center would like to thank the Spessard Family for donating a book to our school’s collection.

Another Successful 5th Grade Jekyll Island Trip!

Eighty four fifth grade students ventured off with their teachers and chaperones to the coast of Georgia to the Jekyll

Island 4-H Center for three days and two nights. The group departed from Eastvalley at 5:15am Monday morning and

returned at 6:30pm Wednesday evening. The students learned so much while having tons of fun. They learned about

the Maritime Forest while hiking and climbing through it, collected various ocean animals in nets off the docks, trawled

off the back of a pontoon boat and collected a multitude of

animals such as squid, shrimp, blue crabs, and stingrays.

They dragged seining nets through the ocean and collected more

sea creatures, walked the beach and learned about the erosion

and accretion on the island including Bone Yard Beach, tromped

through the detritus and crabs in the marsh, and much much

more!!! They all came back safe, tired, and bursting with

knowledge. What a great way to finish 5th grade at Eastvalley!!

Note from the EditorThanks to everyone who has been so supportive and complimentary this year as I have learned now to do this newsletter.

I want to say thank you so much to J.J. Swann, who is the designer behind what you see here every month. Needless to say, she’s pretty great. She deserves the credit for taking all of our stuff and putting it together in a nice and professional way. Please thank her when you see her for her hard work this year.

Susie Cary( From J. J.: Aw shucks...you’re making me blush! I couldn’t have done it without you either. So a big thanks also goes to Susie Cary)

What is Odyssey of the Mind?Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem-solving program for students in grades kindergarten through college.

Students work on teams to solve problems creatively! Georgia Odyssey of the Mind is dedicated to providing oppor-

tunities for children to work together to solve unusual and stimulating problems. Georgia OotM believes that creativity,

persistence and cooperation needed to complete the Odyssey of the Mind problems will empower students to be more

successful problem-solvers in their own lives, and in future problem-solving situations.

Eastvalley is looking for coaches for the 2010-2011 school year. We are working with Ms. Wacker and the teachers to

bring OotM back to Eastvalley for another successful year. We will begin forming teams in August. If you are interest-

ed in a highly challenging and motivating opportunity to coach a team and are willing to make a long term commitment

to this program, please go to the Odyssey of the Mind website, http://www.odysseyofthemind.com/. There you can

review the problems for the 2010-2011 year and watch a video to help you understand what OotM is all about. You

can also contact any of these coaches, Lisa Favro, [email protected], Sue Larsen, [email protected],

Melissa Chalker, [email protected] and Leslie Singer, [email protected].

School Council 2010-2011The Eastvalley School Council has been established for 2010-11 without having elections due to the fact that only 3

applications were turned in by parents. Congratulations to the following additions: Mrs. Alanne Orjoux, Mr. Tony

Antoniades and Mrs. Kristen Pyle. The returning member to the School Council will be Mrs. Michelle Zimmerman.

Thanks to all for their service to Eastvalley.
