Unlike neurotypical professional artists, Anderson’swork is her only voice, and she is prolific with more than 300 pieces in less than three years. She paints weekly atthe Inside Out Studio, a local studio for adults with disabilities, where she creates museum-worthy art. She workswith canvas or board to create landscape and abstract art. She often paints over her work several times beforeshe is finished, and uses a broadly generalized brushstroke, roller or sponge, with smaller, articulate, accentuating strokes. An emerging career artist, Anderson is breaking down barriers. Her exhibit, “BeyondBarriers,” is educating the public that persons with disabilities can do amazing things if given the opportunity. www.danaandersonart.com, facebook.com/danaandersonart.huntsville

Angela Nesbit effortlessly captures light, movement and texture. Recognized for her portraits of children inmotion and her unique style, she uses a brush and palette knife to build energetic layers of paint on top of aheavily under painted canvas. Kathryn Price fell in love with the painting process that includes problem-solving skills. She finds much pleas-ure trying to learn to see big shapes, values and composition. “To me, art is a geometry problem,” says Price.“You are given a canvas and an idea, then you go through the steps to prove your creation connects withsomeone.” Her biggest influences are Edouard Manet and Paul Cezanne. She believes that as painters learnand grow as artists, they constantly challenge themselves with new endeavors. Painting is learning how tosee and achieving what your eye can discern. “During COVID-19, like many people, I set goals to survive the“new normal” including improving my painting skills, says Price. She has read, watched videos and paintedwith a purposefully intent to sharpen her process to make her artwork grow to a new level. At a glance, the subjects of Angie Renfro’s paintings -- factories, birds, telephone wires -- are straightforward. But looka moment longer, and you will find profound loneliness and a tragic sense of longing radiating through these decep-tively simple veneers. In capturing that beauty of the familiar yet overlooked, Renfro gives us not only moving artworkbut also stark pause: If we’ve missed this, what else might we be missing? In 2002, Renfro received a BFA from theAcademy of Art University in San Francisco and remained in the city to pursue a variety of artistic avenues. The expe-rience she gained from working in various fields of design has had a tremendous influence on her work. His artistic gift was discovered by a fifth-grade teacher and a creative explosion was sparked inthe pre-teen. Robinson studied at the prestigious Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y. Early in his development, Robinsonbegan looking to the great masters for inspiration and technical insight. An avid student of realism, he studied theelemental principles of painting by exploring the work and technique of Old Masters such as Rembrandt, Vermeerand Degas. However, it was the work of 19th and 20th century American artists that provided Robinson with thestrongest stylistic foundation, helping him forge and define his own artistic sensibility. In 1994, Robinson's workbegan to extensively incorporate rural subjects primarily located in the state of Alabama. He is an Exhibiting ArtistMember (EAM) of The National Arts Club, an Artist Member of The Salmagundi Club and a Signature Member ofThe Pastel Society of America. A self-taught artist, William Joseph Shayer Sr. began by painting decorations on rush-bottom chairs. He moved onto painting carriages in the town of Guildford, after which he started doing heraldic painting. Ultimately, he beganpainting oil on canvas and became skilled at portraying woodland scenes with gypsies, people and animals in frontof country inns and farm houses, and beach scenes crowded with boats and fishermen. Shayer was a competentlandscape artist, but is best known as a figure painter. His work is reminiscent in some respects to the paintings ofGeorge Morland, another popular figure painter. However, Shayer's work has a depth and brightness that is miss-ing from the paintings of many of his contemporaries, due to his skillful application of glaze. He exhibited at theRoyal Academy, the British Institution and at the Suffolk Street Gallery of the Society of British Artists. His works are ondisplay at many museums, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Tate Gallery, the Glasgow Art Gallery andthe New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. Shayer lived a long life, during which he had two wives and 10 children. His eldest son, William Joseph Shayer Jr., also a painter, painted in a style very similar to his father. Their paintings areeasily confused, which is made all the more difficult by the fact they probably collaborated on several paintings inthe elder Shayer's later years. Shayer died in 1879 at the age of 92.

Karen Weihs was the featured artist for the 2019 Huntsville Museum of Art Gala. Using mostly paletteknives and carefully chosen brushes, Weihs applies pigment in lush impasto layers interspersed withthin glazes that enrich colors and result in canvases that glow with mysterious light and form. Thevague forms and evocative spaces in her paintings become magnets that draw audiences into themystery of creation by way of human imagination. Her works radiate an otherworldly ambience ofshimmering colors and swirling shapes, representing whatever subject matter the viewer chooses tosee. Weihs galvanizes her audience's natural curiosity with compositions that border between abstrac-tion and landscape. She alludes to the familiar without telling the story. The Huntsville Museum of Art Gala Featured Artist for 2007, Briggs Whiteford paints from the poetry of her life and thebeauty of her surroundings. Whiteford began her formal training as a fine artist at SUNY, Purchase in New York, theArt Students League of New York, the Silvermine Arts Center in Connecticut and the New York Studio School, New YorkCity. However, her greatest teacher is nature itself. Having direct experiences in nature allows the sensation of beingfully alive and embodied in the present moment to spill out onto the canvas. While she regularly travels to paint therich and varied landscapes around the world, Whiteford also draws upon her roots in the South Carolina low country. In these paintings she connects land and sea in an intimate relationship with the low country’sGeechee/Gallah people who have been living on the land for hundreds of years. After three years in New York City, deeply engaged with the New York art scene and creating a body of work that was well received, Whiteford moved to Block Island, a tiny island off the coast of Rhode Island when the pandemic exploded in New York City. Her work, inspired by the vastness of sky and ocean juxtaposed with rolling lands and stone walls, is a culmination of roots in the Deep South, her travels around the world, imagination, dreams and an intimate connection with the natural world. www.briggswhiteford.com

The Huntsville Museum of Art Gala featured artist in 2009, AliceWilliams paints, laughs, gardens and lives with an ease and awak-ened wonder which infuse the very fibers of her canvas and inspireevery stroke of her brush. Her color play and thoughtful composi-tion, lure the viewer into a timeless, secret world they never knewthey were missing. Williams studied fine arts at Columbia College,Furman University and Clemson University in South Carolina, thenwent on to study under Al Green, John Howard Kintsler and AlbertHandel, to name a few. It was in Atlanta that she found the greatRussian painters (and brothers), Constantine and Roman Chatov, who quickly became her most influential teachers. Williams spentthree years under their tutelage, which led to a lucrative 12 yearsworking as a portraiture artist, and her eventual discovery of herown, very personal creative expression. Her passion and sheer joyfor creating legendary gardens matches her love of painting.Always drawing inspiration from her surroundings, Williams tooknotice of the enchanting gardens of England when her husband’sjob with IBM took them there for two and a half years in 1985. Thecouple’s love of Provence drew them back to France where they now live in an 1823 farmhouse, which Don says is “just South of heaven’s gate” and Alice refers to as “le paradis.” www.alicewilliams.com
