AQUARELAAquarela takes audiences on a deeply cinematic journey through the transformative beauty and raw power of water. Filmed at a rare 96 frames-per-second, the film is a visceral wake-up call that humans are no match for the sheer force and capricious will of Earth’s most precious element. From the precarious frozen waters of Russia’s Lake Baikal to Miami in the throes of Hurricane Irma to Venezuela’s mighty Angels Falls, water is AQUARELA’s main character, with director Victor Kossakovsky capturing her many personalities in startling visual detail. (USA, UK, Germany, Denmark, 2019, 89 Mins, PG, English, Russian, Spanish | Dir. Victor Kossakosvky)

Through the natural lens of water you can see, experience and feel the ebb and flow of all known

human emotions – anger, aggression, peacefulness, nobility, loneliness, jealousy…everything.

– Victor Kossakosvky, Director

DOWNTON ABBEYA royal visit from the King and Queen of England will unleash scandal, romance and intrigue that will leave the future of Downton hanging in the balance. Written by series creator Julian Fellowes and starring the original cast. (UK, 2019, 90 Mins, PG, English | Dir. Michael Engler)

The television series Downton Abbey followed the lives of the Crawley family and the servants who worked for them at the turn of the 20th century in an Edwardian English country house. Over its 6 seasons, the series garnered 3 Golden Globe Awards, 15 Primetime Emmy Awards, 69 Emmy nominations in total, making Downton Abbey the most nominated non-US television show in the history of the Emmys - even earning a Special BAFTA award and a Guinness World Record for the highest critically rated TV show along the way.

This fall, the worldwide phenomenon Downton Abbey, becomes a grand motion picture event, as the beloved Crawleys and their intrepid staff prepare for

the most important moment of their lives.

EDIEEdie (Sheila Hancock) has spent 40 years trapped in a colourless life in England, tending to her controlling husband (Donald Pelmear) after his stroke. When he passes away and her daughter (Wendy Morgan) tries to send her to a care home, she packs an old camping bag, leaves her life behind and embarks on an adventure she never got to have - climbing the imposing Mount Suilven in Scotland. Joined by Johnny (Kevin Guthrie), a reluctant local guide, Edie travels to the beautiful village of Lochinver in the Scottish Highlands. Despite the misgivings of Johnny’s girlfriend (Amy Manson) and flatmate (Paul Brannigan), Edie and Johnny form an unlikely friendship. (UK, 2018, 102 Mins, English | Dir. Simon Hunter)

When her husband dies, 83 year old Edie embarks on an unforgettable journey through the unspoiled wilderness of the Scottish highlands – taking her on

the adventure she never got to have.

BRITTANY RUNS A MARATHONBrittany Forgler (Jillian Bell) is a funny, likeable, 27-year-old hot mess of a New Yorker whose trashy nightclub adventures and early-morning walks of shame make her late for work every day. But when she stops by a Yelp-recommended doctor’s office in an attempt to score Adderall, Brittany gets handed a series of diagnoses instead. Suddenly forced to get a grip, Brittany laces up her Converse sneakers and runs one sweaty block. The next day, she runs two. Soon she runs a mile. Brittany finally has direction—but is she on the right path? (USA, 2019, 103 Mins, R, English | Dir. Pail Downs Calaizzo)

Award-winning playwright Paul Downs Colaizzo makes his directorial debut with this Sundance-winning

romantic comedy - starring Jillian Bell as a New York slacker who reluctantly takes up running, hoping to

put her life back on track one block at a time.

FIDDLER ON THE ROOF: MIRACLE OF MIRACLESJoin Sheldon Harnick, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Joel Grey and many others, as director Max Lewkowicz chronicles the backstory of Fiddler on the Roof, from its 1960s New York roots, when "tradition" was on the wane and civil rights were evolving. Most revealing is the story of the play’s global impact, where audiences all over the world for the last half-century have claimed Tevye’s story as their own, from suburban middle schools in Nebraska to grand state theatres in Japan. Also featuring interviews with Harold Prince, Jerry Bock, Chaim Topol, Harvey Fierstein, Fran Lebowitz, Calvin Trillin, and Nathan Englander, as well as archival footage of original director-choreographer Jerome Robbins and star Zero Mostel. (USA, 2019, 92 Mins, PG-13, English | Dir. Max Lewkowicz)

The origin story of one of Broadway’s most beloved musicals, Fiddler on the Roof and its phenomenal

impact around the world, finally comes to theaters.

HEADING HOME: THE TALE OF TEAM ISRAELAfter years of defeat, Team Israel is finally ranked among the world's best in 2017, eligible to compete in the prestigious international tournament. Their line-up included several Jewish American Major League players–Ike Davis, Josh Zeid and ex-Braves catcher Ryan Lavarnway–most with a tenuous relationship to Judaism, let alone having ever set foot in Israel. Their odyssey takes them from Tel Aviv and Jerusalem where they are greeted as heroes, to Seoul where they must debunk their has-been, wannabe reputations. With their Mensch on the Bench mascot by their side, the team laughs, cries, and does much soul-searching, discovering the pride of represent-ing Israel on the world stage. (USA/Israel/Japan/S. Korea, 2018, 91 Mins, PG-13, English | Dir. Seth Kramer, Daniel A. Miller, and Jeremy Newberger)

The documentary film about the underdog Israel National Baseball Team competing for the first time

in the World Baseball Classic.

JUDYRenée Zellweger's dazzling performance highlights this electric drama about Judy Garland. The showbiz legend arrives in Swinging London in 1968 to perform a five-week sold-out run at The Talk of the Town. It is 30 years since she shot to global stardom in The Wizard of Oz, but if her voice has weakened, its dramatic intensity has only grown. As she prepares for the show, battles with management, charms musicians and reminisces with friends and adoring fans, her wit and warmth shine through. Even her dreams of love seem undimmed as she embarks on a whirlwind romance with Mickey Deans, her soon-to-be fifth husband. Featuring some of her best-known songs, the film celebrates the voice, the capacity for love, and the sheer pizzazz of “the world’s greatest entertainer.” (UK, 2019, 118 Mins, PG-13, English | Dir. Rupert Goold)

Academy Award winner Renée Zellweger stars as the legendary Judy Garland - exhausted by fame and 30

years after her meteoric rise to stardom as the lead in The Wizard of Oz – she embarks on a series of chaotic

performances in London.

GIVE ME LIBERTYKirill Mikhanovsky’s hilarious, heartbreaking debut feature draws from personal experience to create a raw, inventive “day in the life” story about marginalized characters encountering literal and figurative roadblocks. Vic, a hapless young Russian American, drives a handicapped transport in Milwaukee, where he shares an apartment with his grandfather. Already late - on a day when street protests break out, Vic reluctantly agrees to ferry his grandfather and a dozen elderly Russians to a funeral, but they’re distressed when he stops first in a predominantly African American neighborhood to pick up Tracy, a black woman with ALS. On the verge of being fired, Vic’s day goes from bad to worse. (USA, 2019, 110 Mins, English & Russian | Dir. Kirill Mikhanovsky)

A charming, comedic look at ordinary people and a rigged system, Give Me Liberty has a flavor of the Czech New Wave, using a supremely light touch, wry dissent, nonprofessional actors, and

unscripted moments.

MONOSMonos captivates us with its striking baroque aesthetic, otherworldly setting, and ingenious reframing of the war film—one that uses adolescence to insinuate a youthful but elusive dream of peace. A ragtag band of child soldiers, occupy a derelict ruin atop a remote mountain where they train themselves, watch over a “conscripted” milk cow and a kidnapped American engineer, Doctora (Julianne Nicholson). But after an attack forces them to abandon their base, playtime is over for the motley young crew. (Columbia, Argentina, Netherlands, German, Sweden, Uruguay, 2019, 102 Mins, R, English & Spanish | Dir. Alejandro Landes)

On a faraway Colombian mountaintop, what at first glance looks like a hedonistic summer camp, is actually the base of a group of child soldiers. As they descend into a jungle they find themselves in

an increasingly anarchic, unhinged “nowhere world” that echoes Lord of the Flies and Apocalypse Now.

OFFICIAL SECRETSOne day in 2003, in the lead up to the Iraq War, Katharine Gun (Keira Knightly) receives a memo from the NSA with a shocking directive: the United States is enlisting Britain’s help in collecting compromising information on United Nations Security Council members in order to blackmail them into voting in favor of an invasion of Iraq. Unable to stand by and watch the world be rushed into an illegal war, Gun makes the gut-wrenching decision to defy her government and leak the memo to the press. So begins an explosive chain of events that will ignite an international firestorm, expose a vast political conspiracy, and put Gun and her family directly in harm’s way. From Academy Award winning director of Tsotsi, Gavin Hood. (UK & USA, 2019, 112 Mins., English | Dir. Gavin Hood)

She risked everything to stop an unjust war – and her government called her a traitor. Based on world-shaking true events, Official Secrets tells the gripping story of Katharine Gun, a British whistleblower that

exposed a joint US-UK illegal spying operation against members of the UN Security Council.

LINDA RONSTADT: THE SOUND OF MY VOICESince bursting onto the music scene in 1967, Linda Ronstadt’s extraordinary vocal range and ambition created unforgettable songs across rock, pop, country, folk ballads, American standards, classic Mexican music and soul. As the most popular female recording artist of the 1970s Ronstadt filled huge arenas and produced an astounding eleven Platinum albums. Ronstadt was the first artist to top the Pop, Country, and R&B charts simultane-ously, winning 10 GRAMMY Awards on 26 nominations. In Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice, Ronstadt is our guide through growing up in Tucson; her folk days with the Stone Poneys; and her reign as the “queen of country rock” in the ‘70s and early ’80s. With moving performance footage and appearances by friends and collaborators including Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Bonnie Raitt and Jackson Browne. 95 Mins.

"It captures the life and career of a rock 'n' roll star who never looked back, never apologized, never

compromised, virtually never made a wrong move, and made it all seem effortless." - Variety

LA FLORA decade in the making, Mariano Llinás’s La Flor is an unrepeatable labor of love and madness that redefines the concept of binge viewing. The director himself shows up at the start to preview the six episodes that await, each starring the same four remarkable actresses: Elisa Carricajo, Valeria Correa, Pilar Gamboa, and Laura Paredes. Overflowing with nested subplots and whiplash digressions, La Flor shape-shifts from a B-movie to a musical to a spy thriller to a category-defying metafiction—all of them without endings—to a remake of a very well-known French classic and, finally, to an enigmatic period piece that lacks a beginning (granted, all notions of beginnings and endings become fuzzy after 14 hours). (Argentina, 2018, 868 Mins, NR, Spanish | Dir. Mariano Llinás)

A landmark in filmmaking and the most epic cinematic event of the year; La Flor is a groundbreaking 14 hour odyssey that “robs the cinema in 6 episodes” and

celebrates the art of storytelling and cinema itself.

THE SOUND OF SILENCEPeter Lucian (Peter Sarsgaard) is a man obsessed by silence—or, more precisely, the hundreds of barely detect-able ambient sounds that comprise silence. Working as a New York City “house tuner”—an acoustic guru who adjusts the subtle soundscapes of his clients’ homes in order to improve their emotional well-being—the ultra-meticulous Peter leads an almost hermit-like existence according to his own carefully ordered logic. But when he takes on the case of Ellen (Rashida Jones), an anxiety-ridden woman whose problems can’t be solved simply through sound, Peter must confront the messy realities of an often dissonant world. (USA, 2019, 85 Mins., English | Dir. Michael Tyburski)

Peter Sarsgaard and Rashida Jones star in a moving tale about a “house tuner” who becomes stifled when he meets a client he can’t quite tune into.

VITA & VIRGINIASet amidst the bohemian high society of 1920s England, Vita & Virginia tells the scintillating true story of a literary love affair that fueled the imagination of one of the 20th century’s most celebrated writers. Vita Sackville-West (Gemma Arterton) is the brash, aristocratic wife of a diplomat who refuses to be constrained by her marriage. When she meets the brilliant but troubled Virginia Woolf (Elizabeth Debicki), she is immediately attracted to the famed novelist’s eccentric genius and enigmatic allure. So begins an intense, passionate relationship marked by all-consuming desire, intellectual gamesmanship, and destructive jealousy that will leave both women profoundly transformed and inspire the writing of one of Woolf’s greatest works. (Ireland & UK, 2019, 110 Mins., R, English | Dir. Chanya Button)

Based on the play by Olivier, Emmy, and BAFTA Award winner Dame Eileen Atkins; Vita & Virginia is the tumultuous true story of the love affair between popular author and socialite Vita Sackville-West and

literary icon Virginia Woolf.

Based on the real life experiences of journalist and author Hunter S. Thompson, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a wild and psychedelic satirical black comedy that delves into the dark extremes of American excess. Journalist Raoul Duke and his lawyer Dr Gonzo drive from LA to Las Vegas on a never-ending drug binge. They nominally cover news stories, including a convention on drug abuse, all the while sinking deeper into a frightening psychedelic otherworld. As Vietnam, Altamont and the Tate killings impinge from the world of TV news, Duke and Gonzo see casinos, reptiles and the American dream crumbling before their eyes. Editors' NoteFor many years, we have described the Cinema Arts Centre as Long Island’s Film Window on the World. We feel that, short of physically visiting other countries, there are few better ways to experience another culture than seeing their movies. At a moment when our need to

understand the wider world is more important than ever, but fewer international movies are released here in the United States, we are delighted to be one of the US venues hosting Europa Cinemas’ TALES OF EUROPE. This festival offers a diverse and carefully curated selection of powerful new films from across the continent. A hard-hitting crime drama from Austria, a gentle tale of life in a tiny village in Greenland, and legendary European master Barbet Schroeder’s searing exploration of Buddhist persecution of Muslims in Myanmar, are just some of the highlights of this exciting journey through Europe’s burgeoning film scene. Join us for a lively week in Europe!

– Dylan Skolnick

Our Fall programming begins with The Chambermaid (La Camarista) (p13), a mesmerizing look into the life of Eve, an honest, hard-working single mother and hotel maid with aspirations of moving up from the 18th floor where she works so fastidiously to the prestigious 42nd floor. This quiet but powerful drama illuminates the value and thankless labor

the working class provides, as many immigrants do in America today, despite heightened threats of persecution.

It’s back to school for kids, and maybe you’ve long graduated, but you can still get an education with the Miskatonic Institute’s lecture, Witches, Sluts, Feminists (my favorite things!). Then, for Art House Theater Day, we bring back Robert Downey Sr.’s (yes, Robert Downey Jr.’s dad) Putney Swope (p16). This experimental feature was subversive, controversial, and just plain crazy in 1969, and still packs a wallop with its surreal humor and relentless assault on the hypocrisy of post-war America. We are joined by Andre Doughty for what will be a lively discussion on this very politically incorrect, no-holds-barred satire on advertising and race relations.

An artful and uplifting documentary on the life and works of the legendary storyteller and Nobel prize-winner, Toni Morrison.

Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am offers an artful and intimate meditation on the life and works of the acclaimed novelist. From her childhood in the steel town of Lorain, Ohio to ‘70s-era book tours with Muhammad Ali, from the front lines with Angela Davis to her own riverfront writing room, Toni Morrison leads an assembly of her peers, critics and colleagues on an exploration of race, America, history and the human condition as seen through the prism of her own literature. Woven together with a rich collection of art, history, literature and personality, the film includes discussions about her many critically acclaimed works, including novels “The Bluest Eye,” “Sula” and “Song of Solomon,” her role as an editor of iconic African-American literature and her time teaching at Princeton University.(USA, 2019, 120 Mins, PG-13, English | Dir. Timothy Greenfield-Sanders)

REAL TO REEL DOCUMENTARY

When the reclusive Christian (Franz Rogowski, TRANSIT) takes a job working the night shift at a big box store, his new manager, Bruno from the Beverage Department (Peter Kurth, BABYLON BERLIN), teaches him the lay of the land and the delicacy it takes to operate a forklift. Christian becomes enamored by his charming but mysterious co-worker “Sweets Marion” (Sandra Huller, TONI ERDMANN), with whom he begins to share flirtatious break room coffees and conversations. But Marion has secrets of her own and when she suddenly goes on sick leave, Christian is tempted to fall into habits of his dark past. An affecting and bittersweet glimpse into the shared connections of a motley group of workers, In The Aisles quietly celebrates the beauty in the day-to-day and the collective pride we take in our jobs with dark humor and nuance. (Germany, 2019, 125 Mins., NR, German | Dir. Thomas Stuber)

In this tenderly captured love letter to the workplace and to real moments of normalcy; Christian takes on the mundane job of stocking shelves at a supermarket only to

unexpectedly find companionship and a sense of purpose among a group of emotionally damaged misfits.

Director Jack Hazan creates an improvisatory narrative-nonfiction hybrid featuring Hockney, a wary participant, as well as his circle of friends, capturing the agonized end of the lingering affair between Hockney and his muse, an American artist named Peter Schlesinger. The result is at once a time capsule of hedonistic gay life in the 1970s, an honest-yet-tender depiction of gay male romance that dispenses with the then-current narratives of self-hatred and self-pity, an invaluable view of art history in action, and a record of artistic creation that is itself a work of art. (UK, 1974, 106 Mins, English | Dir. Jack Hazan)

45 years after its original release, A Bigger Splash is returning to theaters. This intimate and innovative film examines the life and work of English-born, often California-based artist David Hockney.

The Chambermaid uses one woman's experiences, working as a chambermaid in one of Mexico’s most luxurious hotels, to take audiences inside a life - and a culture - that's as bracingly unique as

it is hauntingly relatable.

AC/DC have sold over 200 million records worldwide! This tribute will honor the memory of singer Bonn Scott and Malcolm Young. Songs included: "Highway To Hell, " You Shook Me All Night Long,"

"Back In Black," and the classic, "Big Balls," and many more!

In her feature debut, theater director Lila Avilés turns the monotonous work day of Eve (Gabriela Cartol), a chambermaid at a high-end Mexico City hotel, into a beautifully observed film of rich detail. Set entirely in this alienating environment, with extended scenes taking place in the guest rooms, hallways, and cleaning facilities, this minimalist yet sumptuous movie brings to the fore Eve’s hopes, dreams, and desires. As with Alfonso Cuarón’s ROMA, set in the same city, The Chambermaid salutes the invisible women caretakers who are the hard-working backbone of society. (Mexico, 2019, 102 Mins, Spanish with English Subtitles | Dir. Lila Avilés)

AC/DC is one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time. Starting in Australia in 1973 by two Scottish brothers, Angus and Malcolm Young, the groups earlier incarnation was a top ten band called The Easybeats, who in 1967 had a hit with the song "Friday On My Mind". By the 1970s the band, now a hard rock group, often dressed in glam era costumes, such as school boy clothes. They eventually found success with singer Bon Scott. After recording the hit making albums "High Voltage", "Highway To Hell", "T.N.T", and "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap", Bon Scott tragically died in February 1980 from complications of an incident of "acute alcohol poisoning.” Rather than quit, the group brought in singer Brian Johnson, who recorded "Back In Black." It was considered a masterpiece by fans and music critics, and became one of the best selling albums of all time. Approx. 110 minutes.

Film Historian and New York State Librarian Philip Harwood returns to take us on another journey into Rod Serling’s celebrated fantasy television anthology series, The Twilight Zone. It was sixty years ago this Fall that The Twilight Zone premiered on CBS. As a multiple Emmy winning writer, Serling wanted to produce a television series which would allow him to express his political and social views through strange and bizzare stories, which took place in a different realm? Stories which thrust its characters into absurd situations.

Sixty years later, The Twilight Zone is a cultural phenomenon. Home video, a new television reboot, radio plays, books, and even live parodies, demonstrate that The Twilight Zone is very dominant in our lives.

To commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of The Twilight Zone, we will view three classic episodes that were major importance to Mr. Serling:Walking Distance (1959): A man (Gig Young) travels back in time to his childhood, arriving just a few miles away from his native town. This episode was very close to Serling’s heart, since it was inspired by elements of his childhood.

Time Enough At Last (1959): A henpecked bookaholic (Burgess Meredith) himself blissfully alone with his books after a nuclear war.

The Invaders (1961): When a woman (Agnes Moorehead) investigates a disturbance on the roof of her farm, she discovers something strange. One of Serling’s favorite episodes, written by Richard Mathieson.Philip Harwood will be joined by Rod Serling Biographer Nicholas Parisi, author of the new Rod Serling biography, Rod Serling: His Life, Work, and Imagination.

The best of British Theatre Broadcast Live to Cinemas Worldwide

Written and performed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Killing Eve) and directed by Vicky Jones, Fleabag is a rip-roaring look at some sort of woman living her sort of life.

Fleabag may seem oversexed, emotionally unfiltered and self-obsessed, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. With family and friendships under strain and a guinea pig café struggling to keep afloat, Fleabag suddenly finds herself with nothing to lose. Playing to sold-out audiences in New York and London, don’t miss your chance to see this ‘legitimately hilarious show’ (New Yorker), broadcast live at the Cinema Arts Centre. Running Time: Approximately 70 minutes

See the hilarious, award-winning, one-woman show that inspired the BBC’s hit TV series Fleabag, broadcast live to cinemas from London’s West End.

In art, literature, and film, the witch is a shapeshifter. She is a gruesome villain and a studious heroine, a spiritual guide and an enchanting seductress. The witch’s narrative can shift effortlessly, transforming

her from vixen to hag and healer to hellion based solely upon who decides to tell her tale. But despite these disparate depictions, the witch’s presence is inextricably tied to patriarchal anxieties about powerful women and unruly female bodies: her representation always reflects or refutes societal perceptions about femininity. In this illustrated talk, New School faculty member and author of

Witches, Sluts, Feminists: Conjuring the Sex Positive Kristen J. Sollée will trace the witch in visual media from the early modern era through the present, examining her legacy as an icon of female power and

persecution, and as a potent feminist symbol.

Thursday, September 12 at 7:00 pm | Members $20 | Public $25

Five Stars! 'Witty, filthy and supreme.' – Guardian

Beginning with the 1922 Swedish film Haxan to offer perspective on the historical origins of the witch, the talk will include clips and analysis of Mario Bava’s 1960 film Black Sunday to examine what film theorist Barbara Creed calls “the monstrous feminine,” and TV classic Bewitched to offer visions of the “good witch” as the women’s liberation movement begins to coalesce in the early 1960s. Sollée will also use aspects of George Romero’s Season of the Witch, anime classic Belladonna of Sadness, Lair of the White Worm, The Witches of Eastwick and The Craft to analyze conceptions of female sexual expression, and Anna Biller’s The Love Witch to undress the witch through the female gaze. By juxtaposing leading scholarly research on European and American witch hunts with art and pop occulture artifacts, this talk will delve into the complex legacy of the witch from past to present, exploring how the divine and demon feminine have been harnessed to both frighten and inspire diverse audiences for decades.

Kristen J. Sollee is a writer, curator, and educator exploring the intersections of art, sex, and occulture. She is the founding editrix of Slutist, a sex positive feminist website, and lectures at The New School and across the US and Europe. Sollée’s signature college course, "The Legacy of the Witch" follows the witch through history, pop culture, and politics. Her critically-acclaimed book inspired by the course, Witches, Sluts, Feminists: Conjuring the Sex Positive was published by Stone Bridge Press in 2017. Her second book, Cat Call: Reclaiming the Feral Feminine will be published by Weiser Books in the fall of 2019.

Putney summarily fires the wealthy white executives, replaces them with Black Power apostles, renames the company Truth and Soul, Inc., and proceeds to wreak politically incorrect havoc. As King Arthur (Graham Chapman) rounds up the gallant Knights of the Round Table to ride to Camelot, he must contend with subjects who are politically unfazed by his divinely-dispensed authority. He must also wield his sword against the Black Knight (John Cleese), a fearsome opponent whose gradual dismemberment fails to quell his desire to fight. With their second feature film, the Pythons not only redefined the limits of narrative structure, but also took innovative and unconventional styles of filming and applied them to comedy. (UK, 1975, 91 Mins, PG, English | Dir. Terry Gilliam & Terry Jones)
