WELCOMEOur industry is on the brink of a generational opportunity, needing strong leadership as we start to live with Covid, we welcome a new Sports Minister, Hon Anika Wells, a new Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Sports Commission, Kieren Perkins OAM, new ASC Board Members and a new President of the Australian Olympic Committee, Ian Chesterman AM. Indeed, since the last in-person National Sports & Physical Activity Convention (NSC), there has been an alignment of a significant number of alliances and collectives within the sport and recreation sector. These alliances all showing true leadership and understanding that by connecting our industry we can grow participation sustainably and inclusively.

With a 10-year runway until the start of Brisbane 2032, we recognise the opportunities and challenges are not only rebuilding a stronger industry, but also connecting the dots between exercise, play, recreation and sport. Not every participant will embrace a pathway and they will be very happy in being able to participate in their own activities. As we have seen in New Zealand, Canada and England, this concurrent opportunity of participation and pathways will be the new approach moving forward, with more opportunities from local government, the community and commercial sectors. NSC22 will be exploring these other options as this will build a stronger community participation base than just relying on an over-stretched sector of community sport clubs.

Our thinking will be influenced not only by the ‘Games’, but also by global challenges that were highlighted at COP26 around climate change, the impact of the Covid pandemic and the expected economic austerity measures that global governments will adopt over the next decade to rebalance their economies. The continual health burden on society and Treasury, from Australian’s living a more sedentary lifestyle, provides both an opportunity and challenge to the industry. Are we ready yet?

The industry needs to influence and change the narrative and be ready to embrace these global and local opportunities whilst contending with some of the governance and leadership challenges that are currently being raised in our sector. This year’s National Sports & Physical Activity Convention (NSC22) provides that opportunity to explore and change the narrative.

NSC IS COMMITTED TO A COLLABORATIVE APPROACHThe National Sports & Physical Activity Convention continues to evolve and support the industry with these opportunities and challenges by connecting the dots with the big issues we are facing, together with extended offerings that allow the audience to be able to take more knowledge and tools back to the workplace. NSC22 has expanded its offerings, in conjunction with its industry collaborators and partners, with the vision of providing a compelling program for our broad sector to attend, connect, network and celebrate. The extended opportunities include:

• NSC Oration

• NSC Global Thought Leaders Sessions

• Multiple industry networking sessions (being held Monday and Tuesday)

• Industry tours focusing on play, community sport and leisure facilities and sports fields and facilities

• On demand video access through the NSC Academy post-event

• Collaborators and Partners – over 40 committed to your knowledge building

• Big Issues Keynote Sessions focusing on Participation; Active Cities; Young People Agenda; Reimagining the Sports Industry and Innovative Environments for Sport and Recreation

• Five streams, each with five workshops of good practices and challenging narratives to explore how we can be different, embracing success and key learnings

• Over 70 exhibitors, sponsors and peak bodies showcasing their good practices and innovative solutions for the industry

Most importantly are the conversations between the delegates, speakers and partners, because collectively we can achieve so much more than anyone can by themselves.

We hope you enjoy the next few days.

CEO Thought Leaders Session 2: A Blueprint for the Next Decade - Redefining and Leveraging Major Sporting Events to Benefit Community ParticipationHas Australia lost its place in the globe’s rankings for sport, are our expectations too high in the new global hierarchy of sporting super-powers? Was the Crawford Review accurate in 2010 and should we focus our investments on community participation? With the plethora of global sporting events to visit our shores over the next decade, and the rotation of National championships with key states, will these types of sporting events stimulate greater participation and what community impact will they have?
