For centuries Terra Cotta has given designers the versatility needed to realize their designs. In that tradition TerraClad™ opens additional possibilities for the designer using the latest building technologies.

Boston Valley Terra Cotta has developed this catalog to introduce designers to the exciting possibilities of ceramic cladding systems.

With continuous advancements in our production of high quality ceramic building panels and the development of attachment systems, designers can now use this versatile material in high performance rainscreen designs.

To those new to the concepts of rainscreen wall construction theories, we have included a graphic overview (page 6).

A System Designed for Protection and Aesthetics Rainscreen systems help to meet todays tough requirements for mois-ture control for both building longev-ity and air quality. Terra Cotta pro-vides the high performance surface characteristics and natural warmth to maintain a building’s aesthetics for many years.

Panelized Cladding System

Versatile CladdingOur rainscreen cladding system al-lows maximum design flexibility. This mortarless panel system creates a wide range of design possibilities.

A flexible manufacturing process allows for many panel sizes and surface profiles. Large color selec-tion is available in both raw material selection and glazing applications.

How TerraClad™ Helps Keep Water Out

The TerraClad™ Architectural Terra Cotta Rainscreen System is designed to deal with the physical methods of rain entry.

Rainscreen principals use techniques to address failures in conventional sealed systems. The panels direct

rain along the surface while venting and panel shape prevents pressure

and wind respectively from driving water into the wall system. Venting also keeps the wall cavity dry. The mounting rail and gaskets channel

water out at the joints.

Color

Standard Colors Are Just the Start

The TerraClad™ stan-dard colors are intended as a starting point for the

designer. Gaskets can be colormatched to the terra

cotta panels.

Fired In Color for Permanence

TerraClad™ is a ceramic product produced by firing clays at high temperature

in kilns, allowing almost unlimited variation between

choices in through body colors and glazing, with zero

color fade due to UV expo-sure.

The horizontal space between panels of 3/8” is included in our

standard sizes. For example a 12” panel is 11 5/8” high allowing for a

12” center to center stacking module when including the 3/8” horizontal

ventilation groove.

Panel LengthPanel are extruded allowing for easy adjustment to length. Module devel-

opment needs to include the 3/8” vertical space when a compression

gasket is used and a 1/2” vertical space when a tulip gasket is used.

Fast All Weather Installation

Dry, mortarless installation can take place in all weather and seasons.A continuous extruded aluminium

track (below) speeds panel installation by providing a slotted channel for the

attachment clips. The clip, covered with a silicone

isolator, secures the panel to the vertical track.

Testing the SystemsExtensive testing has been conducted on TerraClad™

assemblies. TerraClad™ mock-ups or specimen have

met the following requirements:

ASTM E 283-04, ASTM E 331-00, ASTM E 330-02,

ASTM C 1167-03, AAMA 501.1-05,

AAMA 501.6

Panels During Load Testing

In addition to meeting ASTM C880-98 and ASTM C99-87

performance tests, a mock-up curtain wall and exterior clad-

ding system using TerraClad™ panels and an alternate attach-ment system designed and built

by curtain wall manufacturer passed the following tests:

ASTM E283-97, ASTM E331-96,

AAMA 501.1-94, and ASTM E330-97.

The same mock-up success-fully passed elastic and inelastic

(lateral) seismic displacement tests.

TerraClad System and LEED®

ENERGY & ATMOSPHERE

Intent: Achieve increasing levels of energy performance above the prerequisite standard to reduce environmental impacts associated with excessive energy use.

Requirement: Reduce design energy cost compared to the energy cost budget for energy systems regulated by ASHREA 90.1-2004 and Appendix G, as demonstrated by a whole building simulation using Energy Cost Budget Method described in Section 11 of the Standard.

BVTC’s TerraClad™ Rain Screen System incorporates a ventilated cavity and opportunity for insulation between the exterior cladding and the structural wall system. This air space and insulation increase the thermal performance of the exterior wall system which positively effects the energy efficiency of the building envelope.

MATERIAL & RESOURCE

Intent: Divert construction, demolition and land clearing debris from landfill disposal. Redirect recyclable recovered resources back to the manufacturing process. Redirect reusable materials to appropriate sites.

Requirement: Recycle and /or salvage at least 50% or 75% of construction and demolition debris. (by weight or volume)

BVTC will accept recovered TerraClad™ panels or pieces of panels from the project site to reuse in the manufacturing process. Please contact Boston Valley Terra Cotta Corporate Headquarters, Orchard Park, NY (888)-214-3655 for information on how this service can help you meet this requirement.

MATERIAL & RESOURCE (cont.)

Intent: Increase demand for building products that incorporate recycled content materials, therefore reducing impacts resulting from extraction and processing of new virgin materials.

Requirement: Use materials with recycled content such that the sum of post-consumer recycled content plus one-half of the post-industrial content constitutes at least 10% or 20% of the total value of the materials in the project.

BVTC uses 12% to 20% by weight recycled content in the manufacture of its TerraClad™ Rain Screen Panels. Contact Boston Valley Terra Cotta, Orchard Park, NY directly (888)-214-3655 for project specific recycled content information.

Intent: Increase demand for building materials and products that are extracted and manufactured within the region, thereby supporting the regional economy and reducing the environmental impacts resulting from transportation.

Requirement: Use building products that have been extracted, harvested or recovered, as well as manufactured, within 500 miles of the project site for minimum of 10% of the total materials value (based on cost). If only a fraction of the product is extracted, harvested or recovered and manufactured locally, then only that percentage (by weight) shall contribute to the regional value.

42% of the raw material BVTC uses in the manufacture of their TerraClad rain screen panels is harvested within 500 miles of our manufacturing facilility in Orchard Park, NY. Contact Boston Valley Terra Cotta, Orchard Park, NY directly (888)-214-3655 for project specific recycled content information.
