TRANSCRIPT
Alga Cable T15 system put atdesigners and companies disposal awide range of cables, manufacturedwith 0,6” strand of normal production, which are able to cover the stressingforces and the anchorage types widelyrequired by the actual post-tensioningtechnology.Cables of major or minor capacity andspecial anchorages can be produced tosatisfy specific design requirements. The essential points that characterizeand distinguish Alga Cable T15 Post-Tensioning Systems are:
In fact, using Alga Cable T15 Post-
Tensioning System, the anchorages
can be placed much closer to the main
ribs without increasing the deviation
of the cables to face the cumbersome
size of the jacks. The result is a
considerable reduction of friction
losses, of stresses induced into the
concrete by the deviated tension, of
space and recess necessary for the
jacking.Furthermore, the cyindrical and
compact casting units leave more
space for the reinforcement and
concreting, improving in this way the
final quality of the construction.
The compact anchorages designedto facilitate the installation and thegrouting of the cable. They aredesigned to distribute in the concretethe prestressing force applied to themwith the efficency required by the mainnational and international norms(Italian Norms, BS4447, F.I.P.Recommendations, prEN 13391).
Post-tensioning jacks that, due totheir sizes and weights, are thesmallest and lightest ones available inthis field. The small-sized anchoragesand light weight pulling jacks make thedesign and construction of thestructures easier.

The first evidence of ALGA activeinvolvement in the study anddevelopment of the prestressingtechnology, dates back to 1942 and isproved by Patent 399934, with whichG. Marioni, Alga’s founder, and P. Noliprotected their invention about thepre-tensioning of concrete, or concreteand brick elements, to be used asresistant components in the compositestructures. Since that year, Alga hasbeen continuously present in the fieldof the prestressing, directly or throughthe companies of its group (Biarmato,Prebeton Cavi, Preco); in this wayAlga has gained a great and preciousexperience, which allows it to continuethe course of research and progressbegan more than fifty years ago by itsfounder.

CablesThe cables are made up of very hightensile steel 0,6” , whosecharacteristics are listed in Tab. A.The bundle of strands is encased in asheath of corrugated steel strip, incase of internal tendons, or in highdensity polyethylene (HDPE)tubes incase of external ones.To assure a better protection of thestrands from the corrosion andrealize their electric insulation, it isadvisable to use a corrugated HDPEsheath instead of the corrugated steel
one. By simply varying thestrands size and their number it ispossible to produce cables of anyrequired capacity. The tendons can be produced in theworkshop and sent toconstruction sites, or they can bemanufactured on the site itself. In this case the strands are pushed oneat a time into the sheath, before orafter concreting with Alga specialstrand-pushing machine (fig. 2).It is also possible to pull the wholebundle of strands into the sheath afterconcreting using a winch (fig. 5).When the strands are inserted afterconcreting it is necessary to use astronger sheath, at least 10 mm widerthan usual.

(fig.3)
Installation of cablesThe anchorages are fixed to theformwork by nuts and screws (pos.9/8); the last one, when properlygreased, can be easily removed afterconcreting. All connections along thecable must be carefully sealed withadhesive tape or heatshrinkingsleeves. For tendons installed before theconcreting, supports should be placedevery meter, while for cables to bethreaded in after casting, the distancebetween supports shouldn’t exceed 50cm. As a rule, sheaths cover and gapamong them should be equal at leastto the diameter of the sheathsthemselves and in any case notsmaller than 40 ÷50 mm (fig.4)When many tendons are present in asection, it is necessary to provide forspaces suitable for the passage of theconcrete and vibrators.

AnchoragesMechanical stressing anchorages type“M” (fig.6) are formed by a steelanchor head, on which the strands areindividually gripped by specificwedges, and by a spheroidal castingunit .Fixed anchorages can bemechanical type “F”, “E”, “S”and “M” too, if accessible, or bondedtype “B” (fig.7). The couplings alongthe cables are realized with mechanicalthreaded devices fixed “K” typeor movable “V” type. The intermediate stressing heads type“C” allow the tensioning of the tendonsfrom an intermediate point instead offrom the ends: they are essential for thetensioning of ring cables without bulk-heads. To produce tendons with anumber of strands different from thetypical one, it is necessary to use thenext anchorage of upper capacityAll the data given in the technical cardsare relative to the use of the highercapacity 0.6” strand (279 kN).

Post-tensioning jacksPost-tensioning jacks (fig.10) havebeen designed using a new patentedconcept, which has allowed theirsubstantial reduction in the overallsize and weight, without overstressing the materials involved andworking with normal hydraulicpressures. The concept is very simple: the jack isdesigned with several tubes whichwear individually the strandoverlengths. In such a way the piston’s areabetween each tube is utilized as mainpulling area too.The jack is placed over the strandsand when tensioning starts they areautomatically and simultaneouslyengaged in the pulling head of thejack.Once the required elongation andload are reached the lock-off device ofthe jack can be activated to home thewedges in the anchor head uniformly. The tensioning can be accomplishedin more steps basing on theelongation of the cable. An alreadytensioned cable can be de-tensionedusing a proper releasing device.

TensioningThe tensioning procedure involvesthe following operations:
Installing the anchor head , the
wedges and the comb on thestrands. Fixing the stressing ringon the bearing unit by means of
two screws so as to assure its.Alignement with the cable(fig.12a).Placing the jack over the strands(fig. 12b).Stressing the tendon till theachievement of the requiredtensioning force or of theallowable. Stroke of the jack(Tab.B); the jack grips the strandsautomatically (fig. 12c).

The apparent elongation of the cable isgiven by the sum of the measuredstrokes on the tensioning piston. To get the actual elongation, it isnecessary to clean the apparentelongation of the geometrical cablesettlement, of the draw-in of thewedges which block the strands duringthe tensioning, of the elongation of thestrand overlengths and of the elasticshortening of the structure.
Locking the wedges in the anchorhead through the lock-off piston(fig.12 d).Retracting the stressing and lock-off pistons and resettingthe jack against the ringto carry out the further tensioningsteps necessary to achieve therequired force. W
jack, comb, and thestressing ring have to be removed.

GroutingCables are normally groutedafter sealing their anchorages withthe concrete or, if required, using theproper grouting caps. Before grouting the tendons, theyshould be blown and, if necessary, flushed to ensure that no obstructionswould impede the flow of the injectedgrout. When coupling devices type Kare installed, the previous tendonsmust be grouted after tensioning thenext ones. The sandless grout, injected usingALGA proper grouting pumps
, is kept under pressureduring its curing through suitablecocks. The water-to-cement ratio iskept as low as possible, according to agood groutability; it depends on thetype and quality of the cement used, the temperature and humidity of theatmosphere and whether or notfluidifying and expanding additivesare used. Usually the proportion ofingredients is: 36 ÷ 38 liters of water,
and additiveaccording to the instructions of theproducer. This mix produces 72 ÷ 74liters of grout. The cables can also begrouted with the vacuum technology
, using the special vacuumequipment , proper lydeveloped by ALGA.

Friction lossesTo calculate the tension in the section x at the distance x
from the nearest stressing anchorage, the followingformula can be used:
in which:
= tension at the anchorage
cable length (m) from the anchorage to theSection x
= the total angle of the deviation (rad) between
the anchorage and section x
= friction coeff. between strand and sheath (rad )
coefficient of unintentional angular deviation(rad/m).
The friction coefficient depends on various factors:superficial strand an sheath conditions, number ofstrands, bending radius, tension force, etc..
for bare strand: = 0,2/rad; k = 0.01 rad/m
for unbonded strand: = 0.06/rad; k = 0,01 rad/m

r
Losses due to wedge setAfter the wedges are finally locked, they slightly recede inthe anchor head causing a loss of tension in the cable atthe back of the anchorage. This loss of tension must betaken into consideration by the engineer particularly inthe case of very short cables (under 15 m) and can becompletely or partially compensated with a temporaryoverstressing to the jack or shimming the anchor head. The compensation of the wedge draw-in, if required, mustbe pointed out in the Prestressing ProgramThe wedges draw-in r generally runs from 5 to 6 mm.
