Objectives No child in India shall be deprived of education because of hunger.

Objectives of the mid-day meal scheme-avoid classroom hunger,- increase school enrolment,- increase school attendance- improve socialization among castes- address malnutrition &- empower women through employmentAkshay Patra CompositionVOLUNTEERSPARENTSCHILDRENTEACHERSMISSIONARIESLOCAL COMMUNITIESEMPLOYEESGOVERNMENTAKSHAY PATRA FAMILYVICIOUS CYCLE OF HUNGERHunger among children triggers a vicious circle of socio-economic evils. AKSHAY PATRA Mid Day Meal provides a solution to breaking this vicious cycle.Need of a Mid-day Meal ProgramNearly 13.5 million children in India are out of school.* Their circumstances force them into menial labor in order to earn a single meal a day.Research shows that universal education has lagged because of prevalent hunger and malnutrition. They reduce enrolment in schools, hamper performance levels and increase dropout rates, especially among girls. Hunger impairs a childs performance even if they do attend school. The food provided therefore acts as an incentive to bring children back to school. It prevents them from working while also discouraging their education.

Strengths of the Program

Legacy of the founder and a strong visionIntegrated network of volunteers- government, corporates, businessmen and philanthrophists. The Government of India, along with various State Governments, provides subsidies in the form of cash and grain grants.Highest quality food prepared in shortest possible time in the Centralized kitchens- 40,000/-rotis in 1 hoursIt provides children with a meal rich in nutrients that improves their health and increases their overall well being. Centralized & Decentralized operations to reach the remotest of place.Independent food distribution system.Strong presence on Social Media-on facebook, and twitter.Attract International Philanthropy arms to make a donation.Donation collection system from all type of transactionsMarketing through organizing summits, attracting the attention of bloggers.

Concept of Centralized KitchenA centralized model is one where all the cooking activities of a particular location are concentrated within one large kitchen. Each centralized kitchen has the capacity to cook between 50 000 to 150 000 meals daily Achieving economies of scale. Cooking takes place in mechanized, steam heated cauldrons custom built to reduce the cook to consume time.Highest standards of hygiene by minimizing human handling of food. Freshly cooked food is packed in stainless steel containers and transported to various schools in custom built vehicles (about 10 to 15 schools per vehicle). Security personnel escort each vehicle to ensure safe delivery of meals.

Technology Run KitchensAkshay Patra has automated kitchens in Bangalore, Hubli, Vellary, Vrindavan. Jaipur,Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, Nathdwara, Mysore, Puri, Hyderabad, Vadodara and GuwahatiTechnology enabled cooking methodsHigh standards og Hygienne maintained

Decentralized KitchenA decentralized model is one where all the cooking activities of a school take place in an area close to the school itself.Decentralized kitchens are set up in remote areas of the country where difficult terrain makes setting up of large infrastructures infeasible. In such areas, Akshaya Patra representatives identify self-help groups (in many cases womens groups), carry out the cooking process. They are trained and educated to prepare the meals and provided with all the raw materials and infrastructure required for cooking. The Akshaya Patra representatives are responsible for the operations and smooth running of the program

Program Implementation

A National Steering-cum-Monitoring Committee is set up at the national level to monitor the program, assess impact and provide policy advice to Central and State Governments. Central assistance in the form of subsidies is released upon submission of the committees Annual Work Plan by the Program Approval Board.A nodal department is authorized to take responsibility. Implementation cells are organized by the nodal department and one officer is appointed at each district and block level to oversee effective implementation of the program.Program ReachAkshaya Patra reaches out to 1,281,664 children in 18 locations across 8 states of India, providing them with freshly cooked meal on all school days. Currently, we implement the mid-day meal program in 8,208 schools of the country
