Slides I use for presentation on the SCAMPER ideation processTRANSCRIPT
- 1. What is SCAMPER? Substitute : What might you substitute? Who else? What else? Where else? What parts/ What materials? Combine : What might I combine this object with? Can I combine ideas, objects, functions? What this also include or do? Adapt : What might I change? What else is this like? What does this remind me of? What might I copy? Modify, magnify, minify : How might I change it? Bigger, smaller. What might I increase or decrease? How can I enhance or diminish attributes such as colour, texture, sound, taste, smell, speed? Put to other uses : Are there other uses for this object? What happens if I changethe context or function or purpose? Eliminate : What can I do without? What can I take away or remove? Reverse, rearrange : What if I turned it upside down? Backwards? Inside out? What if I rearrange any parts, function or objectives?
2. S u bs ti tu te Typical questions: What can I substitute to make an improvement? What if I swap this for that and see what happens? How can I substitute the place, time, materials or people?Example: What happens if you can harness the energy of moving masses of people to generate electricity, instead of getting it from power stations? Ponder this over 3. http://core77.com/challenge/humanpower/ 4. http://core77.com/challenge/humanpower/ 5. http://core77.com/challenge/humanpower/ 6. C ombine Typical questions: What materials, features, processes, people, products or components can I combine? Where can I build synergy?Example: What happens if you can combine two unrelated BUT fun activities intoONEproduct 7. http://core77.com/challenge/humanpower/ 8. http://core77.com/challenge/humanpower/ 9. http://core77.com/challenge/humanpower/ 10. A dapt Typical questions: What part of the product could I change? And in exchange for what? What if I were to change the characteristics of a component?Example: Changing the characteristic how about a new way of cleaning your teeth! 11. http://core77.com/challenge/humanpower/ 12. http://core77.com/challenge/humanpower/ 13. http://core77.com/challenge/humanpower/ 14. M odify, Magnify, Minify Typical questions: What happens if I warp or exaggerate a feature or component? What will happen if I modify the process in some way?Example: Modify the way you get to the floors below or above you in the shopping centre 15. http://core77.com/challenge/humanpower/ 16. http://core77.com/challenge/humanpower/ 17. http://core77.com/challenge/humanpower/ 18. P ut to other uses Typical questions: What other market could I use this product in? Who or what else might be able to use it?Example: What if you can use a piece of jewellery for another use 19. 20. 21. 22. E liminate Typical questions: What would happen if I removed a component or part of it? How else would I achieve the solution without the normal way of doing it?Example: A rotary to linear motionto sharpen a pencil 23. E liminate 24. E liminate 25. R everse, Rearrange Think of what you would do if part of your product or process worked in reverse or done in a different order. What would you do if you had to do it in reverse? You can use this to see your probortunity from different angles and come up with new ideas. Example: A new way of table arrangement 26. 27. 28.
