YMCA OF GREATER HOUSTON I 2012 ANNUAL REPORT
EXPERIENCE MOREOur experiences shape who we are and what we believe.
At the YMCA, we believe that every child has potential; every individual deserves a healthy life; and every community is connected by a sense of social responsibility. Our experiences unite us as we learn, grow and thrive, together.
And this is just the beginning.
This past year our YMCA has experienced tremendous generosity. Our annual Partners Campaign raised more than $6 million to help those who would not otherwise be able to experience the impact of YMCA programs.
YMCA Operation Backpack, Houston’s largest school supply drive, empowered 51,092 children with the confidence that only a new backpack stuffed with
number two pencils, spiral notebooks and glue could provide for their first day of school.
This summer we will re-open YMCA Camp Cullen after a fire closed its doors in 2010. Soon our newly rebuilt camp will be filled with children experiencing nature, adventure and friendships forged over a campfire.
Experiences at the YMCA have a positive impact on the hundreds

of thousands of people we reach each year, providing support to empower young people, resources to live healthier and opportunities to strengthen the foundation of our communities.
But we have so much more to do.
You are an essential part of the YMCA’s mission. Thank you for your support, for your belief in our work and your commitment to our shared vision.
We invite you to experience more at the YMCA.
Within the past year, 318,000 people experienced programs at the YMCA that focused on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

EXPERIENCE CONFIDENCEFive year-old Sam White stood at the edge of the pool, bent her knees and drew her arms in front of her head, but fear stopped her from diving in.
A few swimming lessons at the Houston Texans YMCA helped Sam get over her fear. With the help of caring instructors, she jumped right in and
hasn’t stopped swimming since.
“Oh my goodness, she loves the water,” said Valerie White, Sam’s mother. “She really took
to it.”
Valerie enrolled her daughter in swim lessons
like she had done with her older children.
“I really fell in love with the facility,” Valerie said. “The atmosphere was very relaxing, very neighborly,
and everyone was very welcoming.”
Valerie believes swimming is an important life skill to learn. She finds comfort knowing that Sam could survive if she needed to swim or save another person’s life one day. Swimming has also brought them closer together.
“When the pool reopens for the summer, we plan on putting her back in lessons,” Valerie said. “I don’t see how I couldn’t since she loves it so much. And it was something for us to do together.”
When the pool reopens for the summer, we plan on putting her back in lessons...I don’t see how I couldn’t since she loves it so much.

EXPERIENCESUPPORT
In early 2012, Jim Leong suffered a stroke that mystified his doctors. He was eating right, saw his doctor regularly and had his blood work done annually.
This was the second time stroke had threatened the Leong family. Jim and his wife Jackie had also just experienced her mother’s stroke. This propelled Jackie to make health and fitness a priority.
Jim and Jackie found the support they needed at the Tellepsen Family Downtown YMCA. They picked the downtown YMCA because it was close to their jobs. Having a convenient place to exercise helped the Leongs transition to a healthier life.
“Working out is no longer a chore, it’s our routine,” said Jackie. “We don’t think about it; we just go.”
While they enjoy using the elliptical machines together, Jackie attends BODYPUMPTM and Jim lifts free weights. Jackie believes the mission and philosophy of the YMCA creates a friendly and helpful environment, which makes them feel welcomed every time they come through the doors.
Jim’s cholesterol is now down 100 points. Jackie says the best part of their new commitment to fitness is having a husband who is proud of his transformation.
“Before we joined the YMCA, Jim could be a bit defensive if I asked him about what he ate for lunch,” Jackie said. “Now we have open communication about our health and our diets, and we go out to celebrate when we get great news from his doctors.”

EXPERIENCEMOTIVATIONWhen Derrell Dunn walked through the doors of the D. Bradley McWilliams YMCA at Cypress Creek, he was 340 pounds, diabetic and suffering from high blood pressure.
A fall left him with torn quadriceps tendons, and he relied on a wheelchair and a walker before re-learning to walk after tendon surgery.
The accident was a wake up call. After struggling with his weight his entire life, Derrell knew it was time to listen to his doctor and finally take his health seriously. He had his daughters to think about. They were the inspiration he needed to change his life.
Derrell began working out and losing some weight, but he soon hit a weight loss plateau. To overcome it,
he enlisted the help of YMCA trainer Maria McNabb who helped him kick-start a new routine. She also gave him advice on healthy eating habits and alternative exercises to keep his workouts interesting. The weight melted off.
Derrell now weighs 220 pounds and he’s no longer diabetic. He works out almost daily and has become an inspiration to his doctors and his family.
“The YMCA saved my life,” he said.
Derrell’s weight loss has also inspired his daughter, Danielle, to lose weight.
“I am so proud of my father and thank God every day for what the Y has done and continues to do for my father and for us,” said Danielle.
The YMCA saved my life.“ ”

EXPERIENCE LEARNING
8
Pablo and Claudia Ruiz were happy to learn that a YMCA After School program was available at their daughters’ elementary school.
When their daughters April, 11, and Viviane, 6, completed their first day, Pablo and Claudia asked about the program.
They were thrilled by their response. “The girls asked if they could stay longer because they didn’t want to leave the YMCA,” said Claudia. “That was when we knew the Y was right for our family.”
April is now in middle school, but Viviane attends the program daily. While there she gets help with homework, participates in educational activities, plays games and builds new friendships.
“Viviane is a natural social butterfly, but the Y After School program has helped her make new friends in other classes and grades that she would not have had the chance to make during school,” said Claudia.
The Ruiz family values the educational and social support
that their daughters receive from Y staff members. They are pleased to have chosen the Y After School program. They especially love seeing the smiles on the girls’ faces when they get into the car each afternoon and share their stories about their day at the Y.
The girls would ask if they could hang out longer... that was when we knew the Y was right for our family.

For many years, Julie Puccio sacrificed her health for her corporate career. Then in 2006, Julie lost her job when the company she worked for was bought out. Finding herself unemployed, she decided to concentrate on improving her
family’s physical and mental health by becoming members of the Langham Creek Family YMCA.
She enrolled her three children in programs at the YMCA. The kids participate in youth sports,
including soccer and basketball, where they have developed their individual skills while learning about being a part of a team. Her two sons also really enjoy the Kid Zone where they can play games and meet friends.
Her daughter has also discovered a passion for dance through the center’s dance classes. Each child
is finding his or her own niche in the programs and is being educated on the importance of being healthy and of staying active.
“The kids are knowledgeable about

fitness now, which is important,” said Julie. “Just because kids play outside, does not mean they are healthy. Now they understand fitness and its importance. It has taught them that it needs to be a part of their lifestyle.”
As she witnessed the growth in her children, Julie also began to focus on her own health and well-being. She began attending yoga, cardio, ZUMBA®, and ballet classes regularly, and noticed that the stress began to melt off.
And even more importantly than building her family’s physical health, Julie found
a place at the Y where her family belonged. They could not only spend time together, but they could also be a part of their community. “Really the YMCA became a family to me and my kids. The members and instructors were all so nice. I found a sense of community again.”
As a mom, Julie is pulled in many different directions each and every day. No matter what happens, being a Y member helps her to focus on her family and the memories that they are building together.
Really the YMCA became a family to me and my kids…I found a sense of community again.
