En août, nombre d’entre vous se rendront au Brésil pour représenter notre pays dans le cadre du Mondial des métiers 2015. Vous avez déjà su démonter que vous figurez parmi les meilleurs jeunes gens de métier au Canada; je sais que vous serez également de fiers représentants de notre jeunesse talentueuse sur la scène internationale.

À titre de ministre de l’Emploi et du Développement social, je sais très bien que les secteurs des métiers spécialisés et de la technologie sont en pleine croissance à l’échelle du pays; il n’a donc jamais été aussi urgent de démontrer la valeur et l’importance des métiers spécialisés. La réduction des impôts, la création d’emplois et la prospérité à long terme pour les familles canadiennes constituent les grandes priorités de notre gouvernement. Pour maintenir la solidité de notre économie, il nous faut suffisamment de travailleurs possédant les compétences voulues afin d’occuper les emplois disponibles dans les domaines où la demande est forte aujourd’hui ainsi que les emplois de l’avenir, demain, le tout de manière à stimuler la croissance.

Nous avons besoin de jeunes comme vous, qui excellent dans leurs domaines respectifs et qui sauront mettre leurs talents à profit sur le marché du travail. J’espère sincèrement que lorsque les autres jeunes Canadiens vous verront, ils se diront « je peux y arriver moi aussi ! » Vous êtes une source d’inspiration, tant pour vos pairs que pour chacun de nous, puisque vous contribuez d’une manière concrète à l’édification de ce pays pour tous les Canadiens.

Une carrière dans les métiers offre aux gens intéressés non seulement la possibilité d’occuper un emploi enrichissant, mais aussi de contribuer à renforcer l’avantage concurrentiel du Canada dans l’économie mondiale. C’est pourquoi nous aidons les jeunes à faire carrière dans les métiers spécialisés grâce à des crédits d’impôt et à des subventions, aux mesures de soutien liées aux programmes de formation, ainsi qu’au nouveau prêt canadien aux apprentis, que reçoivent déjà 4 800 personnes partout au pays.

La présence de plus de 1 200 concurrents du monde entier, dans 50 catégories de métiers, représentera certainement un défi. Ainsi, comme vous vous préparez à apporter vos talents au Brésil, que ce soit en mécanique, en plomberie ou en aménagement paysager, sachez que nous sommes fiers de vous. Au nom de tous les Canadiens qui vous soutiennent à distance, je tiens à vous dire que vous êtes déjà des gagnants !

In August, many of you will be making your way to Brazil to represent our country in the WorldSkills 2015 championships. You have already proven yourselves to be among the best young tradespeople in Canada, and I know you will proudly represent our talented youth on the world stage.

As Minister of Employment and Social Development, I am well aware that the skilled trades and technology sectors are growing steadily across the country, so demonstrating the value and importance of skilled trades has never been more pressing. Our Government’s top priorities are lowering taxes, creating jobs, and long-term prosperity for Canadian families. To keep our economy strong, we need enough workers with the right skills to fill in-demand jobs today and the jobs of the future tomorrow to support growth.

We need young people like you, who excel in your fields, to bring your talent to the workforce. I truly hope that other young Canadians will look to all of you and think, “I can do that too!” You are an inspiration to your peers, and to the rest of us by literally building this country for all Canadians.

A career in the trades not only offers rewarding work opportunities for individuals, but it also contributes to Canada’s competitive advantage in the global economy. That is why we are helping youth pursue careers in the skilled trades through tax credits and grants, support for training programs, and the new Canada Apprentice Loan, which now has 4,800 recipients and counting across the country

More than 1,200 competitors from around the world, in 50 skills categories, will definitely challenge you. So, as you prepare to bring your talents to Brazil, be they in mechanics, plumbing or landscape design, please know how proud we are of you. To all of us who are rooting for you back at home, you are already winners!

Je ne peux m’empêcher de vanter les mérites d’Équipe Canada WorldSkills 2015, le groupe de jeunes très talentueux qui s’apprête à représenter le pays sur la scène internationale, au Mondial des métiers 2015, à São Paulo, au mois d’août. Les concurrents et les concurrentes – âgés de 23 ans ou moins et provenant de toutes les régions du Canada – ont d’abord dominé à de rigoureuses épreuves dans leur région, pour ensuite faire de même aux Olympiades canadiennes des métiers et des technologies. Maintenant, fin prêts, ils visent à décrocher le prestigieux titre de champion ou de championne du monde.

Les 29 membres d’Équipe Canada représentent les meilleurs talents dans les métiers et les technologies ainsi que le grand potentiel du pays.

Le Canada est riche en jeunes talents. Nous devons en prendre conscience et constater le potentiel de la jeunesse canadienne, qui possède à la fois la volonté et la passion. Nous devons écouter les idées d’entreprenariat des jeunes et alimenter leurs idées novatrices. Il nous faut saluer leur fierté d’avoir choisi d’acquérir et de perfectionner des compétences propres aux métiers et aux technologies, et encourager leur détermination à poursuivre leur formation.

En tant que président de Skills/Compétences Canada, je reconnais le potentiel qu’a cette génération de renforcer l’économie du pays. Je veux que tous les Canadiens et Canadiennes perçoivent ce que je vois chez les jeunes.

Voilà essentiellement la raison d’être de Skills/Compétences Canada : guider les jeunes afin qu’ils atteignent leur plein potentiel. Nous réalisons cet objectif en suscitant des discussions avec les chefs de file de l’industrie, les décideurs, les enseignants et les jeunes au sujet de l’importance des métiers spécialisés et des technologies.

Je remercie tous ceux et celles qui ont contribué au succès d’Équipe Canada et qui, sans relâche, cherchent à atteindre l’excellence, en particulier les membres du Comité technique national, qui travaillent en étroite collaboration avec les jeunes concurrents et concurrentes. Cette aventure ne pourrait se réaliser sans leur travail ardu et leur dévouement inlassable.

Joignez-vous à moi pour encourager les membres d’Équipe Canada WorldSkills 2015 cet été au cours de leurs concours internationaux. Je suis convaincu qu’ils nous feront honneur à São Paulo. Ces jeunes nous ont déjà fourni maintes raisons d’en être fiers ici, au pays.

I just can’t brag enough about our 2015 WorldSkills Team Canada, the contingent of extreme talent poised to make the country proud on the international stage at WorldSkills São Paulo 2015 this August. The competitors – all under 23 years of age and coming from all across Canada – skyrocketed to the top of their local rigorous skills trials and the Skills Canada National Competition and are now set to reach for the prestigious title of World Champion.

The 29 competitors represent the best and brightest this country has the potential to produce in skilled trades and technologies. More than that, they represent our potential as a country.

Canada is rich in young talent. We need to open our eyes and see the potential of youth in Canada – they have drive and they have passion. We need to listen to their entrepreneurial minds churning and fuel their sparks of innovative ideas. We need to celebrate their pride in acquiring and sharpening their skills in trades and technologies and foster their determination to continue learning.

As President of Skills/Compétences Canada, I see the potential this generation has to bolster our economy. What I want is for all Canadians to see what I see in youth.

This is what we’re all about at Skills/Compétences Canada – guiding Canadian youth to reach for their best. We do it by engaging industry leaders, decision-makers, educators and youth in discussions about why skilled trades and technologies matter.

I’d like to thank everyone who has helped make Team Canada shine and continuously strive for excellence, in particular our National Technical Committees who work very closely with the members of Team Canada. This would not be possible without your hard work and tremendous dedication.

Join me in cheering on WorldSkills Team Canada 2015 this summer as they compete globally. I know they will make us proud in São Paulo. They have already given us so many reasons to applaud them here at home.

Félicitations Équipe Canada WorldSkills 2015 ! Vous êtes tous des gagnants ! Vous avez surmonté les défis, fait preuve de vos compétences et de vos forces, vous avez persévéré afin de vous améliorer et de vous perfectionner dans votre domaine spécialisé.

Certains peuvent penser que travailler dans un métier spécialisé signifie être un col bleu, choisir un métier de second ordre. Je peux vous assurer que je connais un grand nombre de personnes qui jouissent d’une excellente qualité de vie, car elles ne craignent pas se salir les mains pour construire l’avenir.

En effet, les travailleurs et les travailleuses spécialisés bâtissent le monde dans lequel nous vivons, et leur travail a des répercussions directes sur notre mode de vie, la qualité de l’air que nous respirons, les aliments que nous consommons et sur notre bien-être au jour le jour. Jetez un coup d’œil autour de vous. Tout ce qui vous entoure est attribuable au fait que des personnes ont choisi de travailler dans un métier spécialisé, de poursuivre une carrière qui allait contribuer à changer le monde, que ce soit d’une façon évidente ou pas. Et grâce à ce choix, elles ont directement amélioré votre environnement et facilité votre vie.

Leur contribution est énorme. Voilà pourquoi j’appuie les métiers spécialisés et que je suis fier de participer à une compétition qui respecte les gens qui mettent à profit leurs compétences pour contribuer à créer un monde meilleur. Voilà un objectif louable, à afficher fièrement, pas seulement ici au Brésil, au Mondial des métiers 2015, mais dans votre vie quotidienne.

Je ne serais pas ici si je ne croyais pas sincèrement que les emplois dans les métiers spécialisés n’étaient pas les meilleurs au monde. Je suis fier de chacun et de chacune d’entre vous. Vous assurez notre avenir. Continuez à bien faire votre travail !

Congratulations WorldSkills Team Canada 2015! You are all winners. You have surpassed challenges, demonstrated your skill and strengths, and persevered to become better, and to do better in your skilled trade.

Some people might think that working in the trades means having a blue-collar, second-class job. What if I told you that I know more people living a first-class life that don’t mind getting their hands dirty and building our future.

People who work in the trades build the world around us, and have a direct impact on how we live, the air we breathe, the food we eat and how we feel on a day-to-day basis. Take a look around, right now at this very moment. Everything around you is there because someone decided to pursue a skilled trade; someone decided that they were going to do something that will change the world, in whatever way, big or small; and because of that decision, they have made your world easier and better in some way, directly.

That’s huge, and that’s why I support the skilled trades, and why I’m proud to be part of a competition that respects people who use their skill to make our world better. There’s honour in that, and you should all wear it proudly—not just in Brazil at WorldSkills São Paulo 2015, but every day.

I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t think that working in the trades was the best job in the world, and I know you wouldn’t be here either. I am proud of every single one of you. You are the future. Keep making it right!

WHAT IS

WORLDSKILLS SÃO PAULO 2015?

Organisé tous les deux ans, le Mondial des métiers est le plus important événement au monde consacré à la formation professionnelle et technique. Il réunit l’excellence internationale dans les métiers spécialisés et les technologies.

São Paulo accueillera le 43e Mondial des métiers en août 2015. C’est la première fois que cette compétition a lieu en Amérique du Sud. Des concurrents et des concurrentes des Amériques, d’Europe, d’Asie, du Pacifique Sud et d’Afrique se rencontreront au parc Anhembi, l’un des plus grands centres des congrès en Amérique latine.

Les concurrents et les concurrentes, dont les 29 membres d’Équipe Canada WorldSkills 2015, montreront l’étendue de leurs talents à un public de 200 000 personnes et concourront pour le titre de champion du monde dans leur discipline respective.

QUELS SONT LES DOMAINES DE COMPÉTITION ?

Les concurrents et les concurrentes participeront à un concours dans l’une des plus de 50 disciplines des domaines professionnels suivants :

• Technologies de fabrication et de génie

• Technologies de l’information et des communications

• Technologies de construction et du bâtiment

• Transports et logistique

• Arts créatifs et mode

• Services sociaux et personnels

Les concours reflètent les conditions d’un véritable milieu professionnel et le travail des jeunes sera évalué en fonction de rigoureuses normes de qualité internationales. Les épreuves auront lieu dans un cadre ouvert, ce qui permettra au public de les observer et de mieux apprécier le talent des concurrents et des concurrentes.

Held every two years, the WorldSkills Competition is the world’s largest professional education event. It represents the pinnacle of international excellence in skilled trades and technologies.

São Paulo is hosting the 43rd WorldSkills Competition this August. This is the first time the Competition will be held in South America. Competitors from the Americas, Europe, Asia, South Pacific and Africa will descend on Anhembi Park, one of the largest conference centres in Latin America.

Competitors, including all 29 WorldSkills Team Canada 2015 members, will show off their extreme talent to a crowd of 200,000 visitors and reach for the title of World Champion in their field.

WHAT ARE THE FIELDS OF COMPETITION?

Competitors will compete in more than 50 disciplines in the following skills areas:

• Manufacturing and Engineering Technology

• Information and Communication Technology

• Construction and Building Technology

• Transportation and Logistics

• Creative Arts and Fashion

• Social and Personal Services

Competitors will participate in simulated real work challenges, and be judged against international standards of quality. The venue allows for open-forum competitions where the public can observe the complexities of the competitors’ talents.

BIOGRAPHY / BIOGRAPHIE : Luc Morin’s first experience with the WorldSkills Competition was as a floor supervisor at WorldSkills Montréal 1999. He then took on the role of Team Leader, supporting WorldSkills Team Canada competitors around the world – in Seoul, Korea in 2001, St-Gallen, Switzerland in 2003, Shizuoka, Japan in 2007, Calgary in 2009, London, England in 2011 and Leipzig, Germany in 2013. Originally from Grand Falls, Morin is also the Executive Director of Skills Canada New Brunswick. Morin is looking forward to hosting the 2016 Skills Canada National Competition in Moncton.

Luc Morin a participé pour la première fois au Mondial des métiers 1999 en tant que surveillant, à Montréal. Il a ensuite assumé les fonctions de chef d’équipe, encourageant les concurrents et les concurrentes d’Équipe Canada WorldSkills dans le monde entier : à Séoul (Corée), en 2001, à Saint-Gall (Suisse), en 2003, à Shizuoka (Japon), en 2007, à Calgary, en 2009, à Londres (Angleterre), en 2011, et à Leipzig (Allemagne), en 2013. BIOGRAPHY / BIOGRAPHIE : Isabelle Collin, from New Brunswick, is 26 years old. She has been working in the beauty therapy industry for seven years. Having started her journey as a WorldSkills Team Canada competitor in 2009, at the 40th WorldSkills Competition in Calgary, Collin quickly rose through the ranks, participating in the WorldSkills Youth Forum in Jamaica the following year and then acting as a trainer at WorldSkills London 2011. Two years ago, she was a translator at WorldSkills Leipzig 2013 and acted as facilitator for the WorldSkills Champion Forum in Switzerland in 2014. Collin has no plans to stop her journey on the competition circuit. “It challenges me and keeps me up to date,” she says. “It brings the best out of me.”

Originaire du Nouveau-Brunswick, Isabelle Collin, âgée de 26 ans, travaille dans l’industrie des soins esthétiques depuis sept ans. Son parcours professionnel a commencé en 2009, lorsqu’elle était une concurrente d’Équipe Canada WorldSkills au 40e Mondial des métiers, à Calgary. Elle a rapidement gravi les échelons : elle a participé au Forum jeunesse WorldSkills en Jamaïque l’année suivante, puis a servi d’entraîneuse lors du Mondial des métiers 2011, à Londres. Récemment, Isabelle a agi comme interprète au Mondial des métiers 2013, à Leipzig, puis comme facilitatrice au Forum des champions WorldSkills 2014, en Suisse. Elle n’envisage pas de quitter le milieu de la compétition. « J’aime la compétition, car elle m’oblige à me surmonter et elle me permet de me tenir au courant des nouveautés dans l’industrie. Elle m’incite aussi à donner le meilleur de moi-même. »

ISABELLE COLLIN

BIOGRAPHY / BIOGRAPHIE : Guillaume Houde returns for his second WorldSkills Competition as Team Leader. He supported WorldSkills Team Canada 2013 in Leipzig, Germany, at the 42nd WorldSkills Competition. Houde knows what it is like to be a competitor on the international competition floor. He was a WorldSkills Team Canada 2007 competitor at WorldSkills Schizuoka 2007, in Japan. Houde is proud to share his experiences and wisdom with WorldSkills Team Canada 2015 in São Paulo. “My participation in the competitions allows me to continually develop in the field of industrial electronics,” he says. Houde holds a DEC in Electrical Engineering.

Guillaume Houde participe à son deuxième Mondial des métiers en tant que chef d’équipe. Il a accompagné Équipe Canada WorldSkills 2013 à Leipzig, en Allemagne, au 42e Mondial des métiers. Il sait ce que signifie d’être concurrent dans une compétition internationale, car il a été membre d’Équipe Canada au Mondial des métiers 2007, à Schizuoka, au Japon. À São Paulo, Guillaume est fier de faire profiter les membres d’Équipe Canada 2015 de ses expériences personnelles et de sa sagesse. « Ma participation à la compétition me permet de me perfectionner continuellement dans le domaine de l’électronique industrielle », d’expliquer Guillaume, qui est titulaire d’un DEC en génie électrique.

TRADE / MÉTIER : Mobile Robotics / Robotique mobile

HOMETOWN / VILLE DE RÉSIDENCE : Hearst, Ontario

BIOGRAPHY / BIOGRAPHIE : Zachary Larose from Hearst, Ontario, joins WorldSkills Team Canada 2015 in the area of robotics. “I have always been interested in the fabrication and assembly of pieces and I also have extensive knowledge of information technology therefore robotics was the perfect fit for me” says Zachary. He currently attends the École secondaire catholique de Hearst and plans on pursuing his post secondary studies in the trades.

Zachary Larose, de Hearst, en Ontario, fait partie d’Équipe Canada en tant que concurrent en robotique. « J’ai toujours eu un intérêt pour la fabrication et l’assemblage de pièces. De plus, j’ai une connaissance approfondie de la technologie de l’information. C’est pourquoi la robotique était un excellent choix pour moi », a expliqué Zachary. Ce dernier, qui fréquente l’École secondaire catholique de Hearst, envisage de poursuivre des études techniques au niveau postsecondaire.

BIOGRAPHY / BIOGRAPHIE : Marc-Antoine Bettez, from Hebertville, Québec, joins WorldSkills Team Canada 2015 in the area of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning – a field his family knows well. “My father is a refrigeration and air conditioner mechanic so he got me interested in it,” says Bettez. “It is complex and allows me to cross over to many other trades like electricity, mechanics, programming, welding, and more.” He currently works at Réfrigération Nordic, where he stretches his skills into all of these areas.

BIOGRAPHY / BIOGRAPHIE : Kassandra Bilodeau of St-Sylvestre, Québec, is a 20-year-old devoted to painting cars. “I chose this discipline simply because it is a trade that I am passionate about,” she says. “I love cars and I love painting so I chose a career that united these two passions.” Having been around car demolitions since the age of 16, Bilodeau hopes to own her own garage in the future. Right now, Bilodeau’s goal is to learn as many different painting techniques as possible.

Kassandra Bilodeau est une jeune fille qui est passionnée par la peinture automobile. « J’ai choisi ce métier parce que c’est un domaine qui me plaît énormément, d’indiquer Kassandra. At 21 he enjoys the challenge of Domestic and Import Auto Body Repair because each day brings, “a new problem to solve...body damage can never be recreated twice.” Looking down the road ahead, the entrepreneur inside is driving Justin towards owning his own body repair shop. When he’s not cutting, fitting and welding metal components in the garage, Dambitis unplugs and takes in the great outdoors.

BIOGRAPHY / BIOGRAPHIE : “I always thought I would become an architect,” says WorldSkills Team Canada 2015 member Rylan Dekok. “Until I started woodworking.” Inspired by several co-workers, he decided to jump into the competition circuit, starting in high school, pushing through to regionals, provincials and nationals. The 20-year-old, from the southern Alberta town of Picture Butte, says he will continue working with his hands in Cabinetry. “It is a very rewarding career,” he says. “I hope to one day open a custom cabinetry and furniture shop.” Dekok currently works at Premiere Woodworking.

« J’ai toujours pensé que je deviendrais architecte, d’affirmer Rylan Dekok. Jusqu’au jour où j’ai commencé à travailler le bois. » Inspiré par des cama-rades, Rylan a décidé de participer à des concours, d’abord à son école secondaire, ce qui l’a conduit aux épreuves régionales, provinciales puis aux Olympiades canadiennes. Ce jeune homme, originaire du Sud de l’Alberta, affirme qu’il poursuivra le métier d’ébéniste. « C’est un métier très gratifiant, dit-il. J’espère un jour tenir mon propre atelier de produits d’ébénisterie et de meubles uniques. » Rylan travaille actuellement chez Premiere Woodworking.

BIOGRAPHY / BIOGRAPHIE : Having toyed with machining in high school, Trevor Fandrick quickly learned that he loves creating intricate parts from raw materials. He credits his shop teacher, Darren Roth, for setting him down what he calls, “an incredible journey.” With Roth as a mentor, this competitor was able to gain extra edge in his discipline. Now 20 years old, Fandrick continues to learn the machinist trade. “My career goal is to never stop learning new advancements,” he says. He holds true to continuous learning as his strategy to win the competition in São Paulo. “Whether you’re in the competition or training you’re always going to have to keep learning,” he says. “Continuously learning will give you the advantage over others.”

Après avoir manipulé des machines à l’école secondaire, Trevor Fandrick a rapidement su qu’il aimait créer des pièces très complexes à partir de matières premières. Il attribue à son enseignant, Darren Roth, son entrée dans ce qu’il appelle une « aventure remarquable ». Avec Roth à ses côtés, Darren a pu perfectionner ses compétences. Il continue actuellement d’apprendre le métier de machiniste. « Mon objectif de carrière est de ne jamais cesser d’apprendre de nouvelles notions », d’indiquer Trevor. D’ailleurs, le perfectionnement continu fait partie de sa stratégie pour gagner au Mondial des métiers 2015. « Que l’on soit un concurrent à un concours ou un étudiant, il faut toujours continuer à accroître ses connaissances, explique-t-il. La formation continue est ce qui nous donne un avantage sur les autres. »

BIOGRAPHY / BIOGRAPHIE : Jacob Fluker, from Fort Saskatchewan, always knew a trade was an obvious first step in his career path. Now 21, he praises his discipline of Electrical Installations for providing opportunities and opening up doors. He offers this advice to others seeking a career in skilled trades and technologies, “with all the government support and the rapid progression of the industry, it is an undeniably sound profession to be in.” Fluker not only has a passion for studying the electrical field, he enjoys learning about other countries. He has travelled to ten different countries over the last three years.

Jacob Fluker a toujours pensé qu’un métier était une première étape logique dans sa carrière. Il explique que sa discipline, installations électriques, constitue un tremplin qui va lui ouvrir de nouvelles perspectives. « Compte tenu de l’appui du gouvernement et de l’évolution rapide de l’industrie, il ne fait aucun doute qu’il faut choisir une carrière dans les métiers. » Passionné par ses études en électricité, Jacob aime aussi découvrir d’autres pays. Au cours des trois dernières années, il s’est rendu dans dix pays différents.

BIOGRAPHY / BIOGRAPHIE : The Terrebonne hometowner, Maxime Gauvreau, trained as a carpenter in Montréal. He is grateful for his professor’s support during his skills development. “He saw great potential in me,” says Gavreau. At 19 years old, he now works at Goyer & Lanouette. Looking ahead, Gavreau would, “eventually…like to start my own business.” Gauvreau notes that he is colour blind, which contributed to him failing some essential examinations. “It could have stopped me from pushing forward in this field,” he says. But, it didn’t. Gauvreau will go on to compete in São Paulo this August in Carpentry.

Maxime Gauvreau a obtenu sa formation en charpenterie à Montréal. Il se dit chanceux qu’un de ses enseignants l’ait encadré pendant son cours. « Il disait que j’avais beaucoup de potentiel », explique Maxime, qui travaille actuellement chez Goyer & Lanouette. Plus tard, Maxime souhaite fonder sa propre entreprise. Il fait remarquer que son daltonisme, qui l’a empêché de réussir certains examens essentiels, aurait pu le décourager de poursuivre une carrière dans la charpenterie – mais cela n’a pas été le cas. Maxime participera au concours Charpenterie au sein d’Équipe Canada WorldSkills, en août 2015.

BIOGRAPHY / BIOGRAPHIE : “Big equipment has always had my attention,” says Ryan Green from Bowmanville, Ontario. “I have always liked working with my hands and been interested in fixing things.” Green was first inspired to compete at the WorldSkills Competition back in grade 10 when he witnessed the competition at the provincial level. Thinking about it for a few years, that day stuck with him. “It made me want to try at the college level.” Now 21, he joins WorldSkills Team Canada 2015 in the area of Heavy Vehicle Maintenance.

« La machinerie lourde m’a toujours intéressé », d’indiquer Ryan Green. « J’ai toujours aimé le travail manuel et aimé réparer des choses. » Ryan a eu pour la première fois l’intention de concourir au Mondial lorsqu’il était en 10e année, pendant qu’il assistait à une compétition provinciale. BIOGRAPHY / BIOGRAPHIE :Carson Gustafson is from Lloyminster, Saskatchewan. “I discovered in junior high that I loved drafting and design,” says Gustafson. So, he enrolled at Saskatchewan Polytechnic to pursue studies in Mechanical Engineering Design. “It felt like the most practical application of my talents,” he says. What skills-set does it take to enter this professional path? Thinking and document use are at the top of his list. “Thinking is instrumental to the modeling process, as there is never just one exact solution…it’s an infinitely variable puzzle that requires quick judgment, analysis and time management,” he says. Gustafson knows it also takes hard work to get to the Team Canada level of the competition. “My parents…worked hard their entire lives…and through their commitment and dedication I’ve learned and inherited many of their traits that I feel make me a better person and competitor.”

« J’ai su que j’aimais la conception et le dessin dès le premier cycle du secondaire, d’expliquer Carson Gustafson. Je me suis donc inscrit à la Saskatchewan Polytechnic pour faire des études de conception en définition de produit industriel. Cette formation m’a permis de mettre en pratique mes talents ». À son avis, le domaine exige deux grandes compétences, le raisonnement et l’utilisation de documents. « Le raisonnement est à la base du processus de modélisation, puisqu’il faut choisir une solution parmi une multitude d’autres, dit-il. C’est un casse-tête aux variables infinies qui nécessite des décisions rapides, une capacité d’analyse et une gestion du temps. » Carson sait que participer au Mondial des métiers exige beaucoup de travail. « Mes parents ont travaillé fort toute leur vie, et par leur engagement et leur dévouement, j’ai appris et j’ai hérité de plusieurs de leurs traits, lesquels m’aident à m’améliorer comme personne et comme concurrent. »

BIOGRAPHY / BIOGRAPHIE :The need to feed her creativity in esthetics led Kingston’s Kaitlyn Hoiles to attend St. Lawrence College. Now 19 years old, Hoiles is a Beauty Therapist – a trade she says demands a strong command of six essential skills (Oral Communication, Working with Others, Continuous Learning, Reading Text, Writing and Thinking). Of those, she notes that Oral Communications is paramount. “You need to be able to understand and communicate effectively with people to ensure good working relationships and client experiences,” says Hoiles. And, the client needs to, “understand the service and home care techniques for their own knowledge and safety.” As a member of WorldSkills Team Canada 2015, Hoiles seeks to not only achieve the title of World Champion, but looks to gain more experience and exposure in São Paulo.

C’est son sens de la créativité en esthétique qui a amené Kaitlyn Hoiles à faire des études au St. Lawrence College. Aujourd’hui, Kaitlyn est une spécialiste des soins de beauté. Selon elle, travailler dans le domaine de l’esthétique exige la maîtrise de six des neuf compétences essentielles : la communication orale, le travail d’équipe, la formation continue, la lecture, la rédaction et la capacité de raisonnement. Et parmi elles, c’est la communication orale qui domine. « Il faut être en mesure de comprendre les gens et de communiquer avec eux pour entretenir de bonnes relations avec ses collègues et offrir une belle expérience à ses clients, explique Kaitlyn. Quant à la clientèle, elle doit comprendre les services et les soins à poursuivre à la maison, pour ses besoins et sa sécurité. » En tant que membre d’Équipe Canada WorldSkills 2015, Kaitlyn espère, bien sûr, gagner une médaille à São Paulo, mais aussi y acquérir de l’expérience et mieux se faire connaître.

Originally, Howe trained in cabinet making, competing regionally four times and participating in provincials three times in this discipline. When he entered college, he decided to switch paths and take on Plumbing and Heating. The numeracy skills he continues to develop along the way keeps him on his toes. After all, the measurements come down to a sharp eye and mathematics. Now, at 20 years old, Howe owns a heating and plumbing company and continues to compete. “My goal is to make my business thrive,” he says. Ask Howe who inspires him to push forward in his career and he will likely tell you Bill Gates. “He built an empire out of ideas,” he says.

Kendrick Howe a d’abord fait une formation en ébénisterie. Il a participé à quatre concours de métiers régionaux et à trois concours provinciaux pour ce domaine. Lorsqu’il est entré au collège, il a plutôt choisi d’étudier la plomberie et le chauffage. Le calcul est la compétence essentielle qu’il continue de perfectionner. La prise de mesures est primordiale dans le métier. Il faut un bon œil et connaître ses mathématiques. Kendrick est propriétaire d’une entreprise de chauffage et de plomberie, et il continue de participer à des concours. « Mon objectif est d’assurer le succès de mon entreprise », dit-il. Et qui est la personne qui l’a inspiré à poursuivre sa carrière ? « Bill Gates. Il a construit un empire avec des idées. »

With her training from Saskatchewan Polytechnic, she now works at Wow Factor Media with six locations in Canada. Her love for graphic design was sparked in high-school with hands-on experience. “I was a part of the yearbook committee, which involved taking photos and designing page layouts,” says Kanak. “I loved doing it and would spend countless hours making sure it looked just right.” Coming from a town with a population of 400, Kanak now looks to work at large advertising firms. She is busy working, learning and training for São Paulo while running a small photography company on the side lines.

Roxanne Kanak participe au concours Infographie. Grâce à la formation qu’elle a acquise à la Saskatchewan Polytechnic, elle a été embauchée chez Wow Factor Media, qui compte six succursales au Canada. Roxanne est devenue une passionnée de l’infographie à l’école secondaire en réalisant un travail communautaire. « Je faisais partie du comité chargé de préparer le livre de l’année. Mon travail consistait à faire la mise en page des photos, d’expliquer Roxanne. J’aimais ce travail au point d’y passer des heures afin d’obtenir les meilleurs résultats possibles. » Originaire d’un village de 400 habitants, Roxanne souhaite maintenant travailler dans de grandes agences de publicité. Elle travaille, étudie et s’entraîne énormément en vue du Mondial des métiers 2015, à São Paulo. De plus, elle dirige une petite entreprise de photographie.

BIOGRAPHY / BIOGRAPHIE : Peter Lauser, from Calgary, loves working with his hands. His grandmother, who serves as his inspiration for choosing the trades, used to tell him, “there is gold in your hands.” A motivating statement to which Lauser responds, “well, I want to see just how much.” Trained as a Mechanical Millwright, he knows he landed the right trade. “It was the closest to Mechanical Engineering…which is the field I have studied in,” says Lauser. At 22, he strives to obtain his Red Seal ticket and return to school to learn even more. “Because my field is so broad, there is always more to learn.” When he is not honing his skills in his trade, Lauser is a classical music enthusiast.

Peter Lauser adore le travail manuel. C’est sa grand-mère qu’il l’a inspiré à choisir un métier : « Tes mains sont une mine d’or », lui disait-elle pour le motiver. Il affirme qu’il a choisi le métier qui lui plaît le plus. « Le métier de mécanicien-monteur est celui qui se rapproche le plus du génie mécanique… une discipline que j’ai déjà étudiée », d’indiquer Peter. Il essaie actuellement d’obtenir l’attestation Sceau rouge. Pour cela, il est retourné aux études afin de se perfectionner. « Il est toujours possible d’élargir ses connaissances dans mon domaine. » Quand il n’est pas en train d’améliorer ses compétences, Peter aime bien écouter de la musique classique.

BIOGRAPHY / BIOGRAPHIE : William Lebel has been building his skills and passion for Network Systems Administration for years. He was immersed in the PROTIC program in high school. “This is where I started to learn how to program,” says Lebel. With that knowledge base, he entered cégep and instantly discovered he wanted to choose the management side of networks as a career. At 21, he is already doing what he loves with the Ministère de l’Énergie et Ressources naturelles du Québec. When Lebel is not sitting at the computer, he’s throwing stones down the curling sheet. Lebel is a competitive curler.

William Lebel est un passionné de la gestion de réseaux depuis de nombreuses années. Il a commencé à programmer et à gérer des systèmes lorsqu’il était à l’école secondaire. Il était alors inscrit au programme PROTIC, dans le cadre duquel sont intégrées les technologies de l’information et des communications dans toutes les matières enseignées. Au cégep, William a rapidement compris qu’il allait faire sa carrière dans la gestion de réseaux. Il travaille déjà dans ce domaine au ministère de l’Énergie et des Ressources naturelles du Québec. Lorsque William n’est pas assis à son ordinateur, il joue au curling et participe à des compétitions.

BIOGRAPHY / BIOGRAPHIE :Ryan Leedham from Brookfield, Nova Scotia, loves planes. He also admits to being, “mechanically inclined.” Leedham combined his passion and skills to study Aircraft Maintenance at the NSCC Aviation Institute. Having a broad knowledge of the nine essential skills, he stakes document use as the most vital in his field. “With such a highly regulated industry…every part of the tasks carried out is done to a written standard,” he says. “Navigating, reading and interpreting the many documents required has the same importance as the finished product.” The 20-year-old says he wants to, “get my Aircraft Maintenance Engineer license and gain as much experience on different aircraft types as I can.” It should come as no surprise that Leedham has a private pilot’s license.

Ryan Leedham est un passionné d’avions. Il admet aussi qu’il a « un penchant pour la mécanique ». Ryan a combiné sa passion et ses compétences en se lançant dans des études en entretien d’aéronefs au NSCC Aviation Institute. Le domaine exige la maîtrise des neuf compétences essentielles, mais l’utilisation de documents demeure primordiale. « Le domaine de l’aviation est grandement réglementé, explique Ryan. Chacune des tâches d’entretien fait l’objet d’une norme écrite. Parcourir, lire et interpréter la multitude de documents sont des fonctions aussi importantes que la livraison du produit fini. » D’ajouter, Ryan : « Je compte obtenir mon brevet de technicien d’entretien d’aéronefs et acquérir le plus d’expérience possible sur différents types d’aéronefs. » Il ne serait pas surprenant qu’il obtienne plus tard un permis de pilote privé.

Being independent and getting creative in an outdoor environment draws Lévesque to this field. He wants to gain more experience and hopes to one day own a landscape gardening company. “I’d like to share my passion with clients,” he says. Lévesque has some words of wisdom for others wanting to enter this trade. “Being proud of what you do is key to success,” he says. “And, have a lot of fun doing it.”

Gabriel Lévesque a étudié l’aménagement paysager à l’École profession-nelle de Saint-Hyacinthe, à l’Immeuble Casavant, à Saint-Hyacinthe. C’est son indépendance et sa créativité, ainsi que le travail en plein air, qui l’ont attiré dans le domaine. Quand il aura acquis plus d’expérience, il compte lancer sa propre entreprise d’aménager paysager et mettre sa passion au profit de ses clients. Gabriel a un conseil à donner à ceux et à celles qui envisagent d’étudier dans ce domaine : « Être fier de ce que l’on fait, voilà la clé du succès. Et il faut s’amuser tout en travaillant », explique-t-il.

BIOGRAPHY / BIOGRAPHIE :Camrose, Alberta’s Brandon Liang has always had a passion for cars. While he had his sights set on a career in engineering, his high school automotive teacher took notice of his talent working with cars and pushed him to compete in a Skills Canada regional competition. “We walked away from our first competition with a gold medal,” says Liang. “From then on, I was hooked.” At the WorldSkills Canadian Trials in January 2015, Liang was joined by seven other Albertans. Now, he is going full speed ahead for the title of World Champion in São Paulo this August. At 18 years of age, Liang is employed by Lamb Ford, where he fulfills his love of fixing vehicles.

Brandon Liang a toujours été un passionné d’automobiles. À l’école secondaire, où il s’orientait vers une carrière en génie, son enseignant en mécanique automobile a remarqué ses capacités dans le domaine et l’a encouragé à participer à une compétition régionale de Skills/Compétences Canada. « Nous avons remporté la médaille d’or à notre premier concours, raconte Brandon. À partir de ce moment-là, j’ai su que je commençais une nouvelle carrière. » Aux Essais canadiens WorldSkills, en janvier 2015, Brandon était l’un de huit Albertains. Il se concentre maintenant en vue de décrocher le titre de champion du monde, au Mondial des métiers, en août. BIOGRAPHY / BIOGRAPHIE :Winston Lord, from Mississauga, has what he calls a “fixation” with electronics. But his obsession is not the only reason he entered the field of Electronics Engineering. “From what I have found, trade jobs are more stable in a changing economy,” says Lord. Ask him what essential skill he is honing to prepare for the WorldSkills Competition in São Paulo and he’ll tell you it is document use. “Being able to interpret various types of documents and make use of all the information is not an easy task,” he says. “To add to this, being able to do this quickly and effectively is where many people fall short which is why I’m focusing so much on it.”

Winston Lord fait, selon lui, une « fixation » sur l’électronique. Cependant, son obsession n’est pas la seule raison pour laquelle il s’est orienté vers le génie électronique. « Selon mes constatations, les métiers sont les professions qui offrent le plus de stabilité dans une économie en perpétuel changement », d’expliquer Winston. En vue du Mondial des métiers, il cherche à perfectionner une compétence essentielle en particulier, l’utilisation de documents. « Il n’est pas facile d’interpréter divers types de documents et d’utiliser toute l’information qu’ils contiennent. Surtout qu’il faut le faire rapidement et efficacement, ce qui est le point faible de bien des gens. C’est pour cela que je me concentre à améliorer cette compétence. »

BIOGRAPHY / BIOGRAPHIE :Tyler Magri from Innisfil, Ontario, knows that CNC machining technology evolves quickly. “If I was not using continuous learning as a skill in my training, I would immediately fall behind,” he says. Magri makes it a priority to stay on top of what he calls, “a staggering amount of different ways to machine a part.” He started getting interested in the trade in high school. Under the mentorship of Nick Stefano, the school’s manufacturing teacher, Magri, learned the basics of the manufacturing industry, welding, and manual and CNC machining. “It didn’t take long for me to gravitate towards CNC machining…Stefano had encouraged and helped me every step of the way to get to where I am today.” While he might not boast about it, Magri held a title of highest overall grade at Georgian College. What’s next for Magri? “Become an apprentice and get my license,” he says.

Tyler Magri sait que le domaine de l’usinage CNC évolue rapidement. « La formation continue, une compétence essentielle, me permet de rester à la hauteur », explique-t-il. Pour Tyler, la mise à jour constante de ses connaissances équivaut « à connaître une quantité incroyable de façons d’usiner une pièce ». Aux côtés de son mentor, Nick Stefano, enseignant de l’usinage à son école, Tyler s’est d’abord intéressé à ce domaine à l’école secondaire où il a acquis les rudiments du métier. « J’ai vite développé un intérêt pour l’usinage et le secteur de la fabrication. M. Stefano m’a toujours encouragé et appuyé, ce qui m’a permis d’en arriver où je suis aujourd’hui. » Tyler a obtenu la note globale la plus élevée au Georgian College, mais il demeure discret à ce sujet. Quelle est la prochaine étape pour Tyler ? « Devenir un apprenti et obtenir mon permis. »

BIOGRAPHY / BIOGRAPHIE : Maxime Marineau is one of two competitors from the town of Hearst, in the heart of Northern Ontario. Like his teammate, he too is at the top of his game in Robotics. Marineau chose the trade for the diversity of skills he gains from it. “Robotics taught me about each and every trade and increased my abilities in design.” This is just the beginning for the 19-year-old Martineau. “My career goals are to begin as an Industrial Electrician, continue my studies and pursue my career as an Electrical Engineer.”

Maxime Marineau est un des deux concurrents originaires de la ville de Hearst, dans le Nord de l’Ontario. Comme son camarade, il est très doué en robotique. Maxime a choisi ce domaine en raison des diverses compétences qu’il nécessite. « La robotique m’a permis d’apprendre beaucoup de notions propres à de nombreux autres métiers et d’améliorer mes aptitudes en fabrication. » Ce n’est que le début d’une longue carrière pour Maxime. « Mes objectifs de carrière sont de commencer à travailler en tant qu’électricien industriel, puis de continuer mes études afin de devenir un ingénieur électricien. »

BIOGRAPHY / BIOGRAPHIE : Karine Ouellet was inspired to enter the trade of Confectioner/Pastry Cook as a child when she would watch her mother at work. “My mother was a baker…she passed her skills and love of the discipline to me,” says Ouellet. “I took some classes when I was young and was instantly bumped up to courses for kids five years my senior because I learned so quickly which made me realize this job was for me.” Ouellet studied pastry cooking at the École Hotêliere de la Capitale. She currently works at the Château Laurier. “For me, being where I am now is what I dreamed about,” she says. “Working with others as a team is an essential skill I leverage for the competition.”

Karine Ouellet a eu l’idée de devenir pâtissière confiseuse en regardant sa mère travailler lorsqu’elle était encore enfant. « Ma mère était boulangère. Elle m’a transmis ses compétences et son amour du métier, de préciser Karine. J’ai suivi des cours lorsque j’étais plus jeune. J’ai très rapidement été transférée dans une classe supérieure destinée à des enfants ayant cinq ans de plus que moi parce que j’apprenais très vite. J’ai compris que ce métier était fait moi. » Karine a appris la pâtisserie à l’École hôtelière de la Capitale. Elle travaille actuellement au Château Laurier, à Ottawa. « Je suis arrivée au niveau que j’ai toujours rêvé d’atteindre. Le travail en équipe est la compétence essentielle qui me servira beaucoup pendant le concours. »

BIOGRAPHY / BIOGRAPHIE : Jessica Pruneau, from Québec, joins WorldSkills Team Canada 2015 in the discipline of hairdressing. “I first started competing to experience the thrill of the competition,” she says. “I didn’t expect then that I would make it to the international competition.” She credits a community of support that helped her attain this level. “A lot of people inspired me during my journey, including former competitors...coaches and team members,” she says. Pruneau has always known that a skilled trade would jumpstart her career. “It allows me to get moving on my career faster,” she says. “I chose this trade for the artistic aspect.” Brush in hand, Pruneau aims for the title of World Champion in Brazil this summer.

Jessica Pruneau représente Équipe Canada WorldSkills 2015 au concours de coiffure. « Je me suis d’abord inscrite à un concours pour vivre l’excitation d’une compétition, explique-t-elle. Je ne savais pas que cela allait me conduire au Mondial des métiers. » Elle attribue son cheminement à un bon réseau de soutien. « Bien des personnes m’ont aidée en cours de route, telles que d’autres concurrents, mes entraîneurs et des membres de l’équipe. » Jessica a toujours su qu’elle allait d’abord faire carrière dans un métier. « Ce choix m’a permis d’entreprendre sans tarder ma carrière, dit-elle. J’ai choisi la coiffure pour son côté créatif. » Armée de sa brosse, Jessica vise à décrocher le titre de championne du monde au Mondial des métiers 2015, à São Paulo.

BIOGRAPHY / BIOGRAPHIE : Sébastien Rémillard is trained in the Culinary Arts. Born in Winnipeg, he now lives in Québec where he is training full-time for WorldSkills São Paulo 2015. Rémillard is continually inspired by the pure artistry that can be created in the kitchen. “It is my passion,” he says. He has always found his comfort zone in the kitchen. “My best memories are the smells coming from the kitchen on Christmas day…I helped from time to time, making more messes than anything…I just haven’t stopped.” Rémillard wants to continue competing, eventually going to Bocuse d’Or, and further refining his skills by accepting apprenticeships throughout Europe in three Michelin-starred restaurants under some of the world’s greatest chefs. “My goal is to be the best I can be,” he says.

Sébastien Rémillard a suivi une formation dans les arts culinaires. Natif de Winnipeg, il habite maintenant à Québec, où il s’entraîne à temps plein en vue du Mondial des métiers 2015, à São Paulo. Il continue d’être inspiré par l’aspect artistique de la cuisine. « C’est ma passion, de déclarer Sébastien. Mes meilleurs souvenirs sont les effluves venant de la cuisine le jour de Noël. J’essayais de donner un coup de main de temps en temps, mais je faisais plus de dégâts qu’autre chose. Depuis, la cuisine n’a cessé de me passionner. » Sébastien souhaite continuer de concourir, en espérant gagner un jour le Bocuse d’Or. Il veut poursuivre son perfectionnement en suivant des stages en Europe, dans des restaurants trois étoiles du Guide Michelin, pour travailler avec les meilleurs chefs du monde. « Mon objectif est d’être le meilleur possible. »

BIOGRAPHY / BIOGRAPHIE :Patricia Roque, from Vancouver, is one of the youngest members of WorldSkills Team Canada 2015. At 17 she has paved her career path in Fashion Technology. “It is something I’ve enjoyed doing for a few years,” says Roque. Now she brings her skills and talents to São Paulo. “I have to be able to apply what I’ve learned and use it to my advantage during the competition,” she says. Roque looks to the success and experience of WorldSkills alumni, Donna Lu, for inspiration. “She is someone I constantly look up to because not only has she competed at WorldSkills but she is willing to put herself out there,” she says. As Roque progresses with her skills training, she hopes to inspire others to land their dream careers.

Patricia Roque est l’une des plus jeunes concurrentes d’Équipe Canada WorldSkills 2015. À 17 ans, elle a déjà programmé sa carrière dans la mode et la création. « C’est une discipline dans laquelle je me spécialise avec plaisir depuis quelques années », d’expliquer Patricia. Elle pourra montrer l’étendue de ses compétences et de ses talents au Mondial des métiers. « Je dois être en mesure d’appliquer les connaissances que j’ai acquises et de les utiliser pour gagner un avantage durant le concours. » Patricia se sert du succès et de l’expérience de Donna Lu, membre d’Équipe Canada WorldSkills 2013, comme source d’inspiration. « J’ai beaucoup d’admiration pour Donna, dit Patricia, non seulement parce qu’elle a pris part à des concours, mais parce qu’elle ne craint pas les nouvelles expériences. » Au fur et à mesure de sa formation, elle souhaite inspirer d’autres jeunes à se lancer dans la carrière de leurs rêves.

BIOGRAPHY / BIOGRAPHIE : Brennan Roy-Bertin from Edmonton, Alberta, attended the Northern Institute of Technology to study and train in Industrial Control. His interest in the trade was sparked when he was 17 years old, and moved from Ontario to Alberta to start an apprenticeship in the Diamond Mines. He enjoys the tremendous amount of learning that goes into sharpening his skills. He boasts that he has taken 39 Siemens courses. Roy-Bertin is currently employed by Aecom. “I’d like to move up in a company and make a difference within the organization,” he says. When he’s not driving his career forward, he straps up his hockey skates and clicks on his skis.

Brennan Roy-Bertin a suivi une formation dans les systèmes de commande industriels au Northern Institute of Technology. Son intérêt pour les métiers est né lorsque, à 17 ans, il a quitté l’Ontario pour faire un apprentissage dans des mines de diamant en Alberta. Il aime apprendre pour perfectionner ses compétences, même si cela représente beaucoup de matière. Il est fier de dire qu’il a suivi 39 cours Siemens. Brennan travaille actuellement chez Aecom. « J’aimerais être embauché par une entreprise et grimper les échelons pour apporter des changements dans l’organisation », de souligner Brennan. Lorsqu’il ne pense pas à sa carrière, il chausse ses patins de hockey ou ses skis.

BIOGRAPHY / BIOGRAPHIE :Web Programmer Gabriel Santerre comes from the Mascouche region of Québec. At a young age, Santerre knew programming would lead him to a career in Information Technology. Continually learning about new technologies hitting the market keeps Santerre interested. He appreciates the need to network, both offline and online, to stay on top of the technology. “The community of like-minded enthusiasts is vast,” says Santerre. “We all learn from one another, exchanging globally, by internet.” Santerre hopes to play a role in shaping how we communicate and interact.

Déjà tout jeune, Gabriel Santerre savait que la programmation Web l’orienterait vers une carrière dans les technologies de l’information. Il se renseigne constamment sur toutes les nouvelles technologies arrivant sur le marché. « La communauté des programmeurs est vaste, d’expliquer Gabriel. Nous apprenons les uns des autres dans le monde entier grâce à Internet. » Gabriel souhaite contribuer à changer la façon dont nous communiquons et interagissons.

BIOGRAPHY / BIOGRAPHIE :19-year-old Tommy St-Martin comes from Notre-Dame-des-Prairies, Québec. After his experience at cégep, St-Martin chose welding as an outlet for his creativity. “I have a lot of dexterity and I just love manual work,” he says. What gets him going in welding are the learning possibilities. Looking ahead, St-Martin would like to start a company he can shape for the next generation behind him. When he’s not training in welding, St-Martin trains with weights.

Après ses études au cégep, Tommy St-Martin a choisi de s’orienter vers le soudage afin d’exprimer sa créativité. « Je suis très habile et j’adore le travail manuel », de déclarer Tommy. Ce sont les possibilités d’apprentissage offertes par le soudage qui l’ont attiré dans ce métier. Plus tard, Tommy compte lancer une entreprise, qu’il espère léguer aux générations suivantes. Lorsqu’il n’apprend pas le soudage, Tommy fait de la musculation.

Garden Landscaping is his niche and his love. “It uses both my physical and mental aptitudes,” he says. “Being satisfied in my job makes me proud of what I do.” Right now, Tessier is focusing on his training and the competition. He admits to having a competitive side. “I have always been involved in competitive sport,” he says. “I decided to take advantage of an opportunity to be in a competition again, this time in a career I am passionate about.”

Gabriel Tessier a étudié à l’École professionnelle de Saint-Hyacinthe, près de sa ville natale, Saint Jean-sur-Richelieu. L’aménagement paysager est à la fois son créneau et sa passion. « Ce métier nécessite des aptitudes tant physiques que mentales, de préciser Gabriel. Non seulement j’éprouve du plaisir à travailler dans cette discipline, mais j’en suis fier aussi. » Il concentre actuellement ses efforts sur sa formation et le concours. Il admet qu’il a un esprit compétitif. « Je participe fréquemment à des épreuves sportives. J’ai décidé de participer à cette compétition pour une simple raison : cette carrière me passionne avant tout. »
