Because your mobile employees depend upon staying connected in order to remain productive, connectivity has become the foundation of the value they deliver to the business.

But enterprises are jeopardizing this value by providing mobile employees who need full-time connectivity with mobility solutions that do only a part-time job.

For much of the time, employees are left to fend for them-selves, locating and accessing Wi-Fi networks in a bid to

reduce cost or stay connected when cellular is unavailable, for example indoors or during a flight.

A mobility solution which falls short of managing the entire connected experience creates a variety of very real risks, including:

Threats to Security Many employees will seek out free public Wi-Fi, because it is abundant and often easier to access than paid or account-based Wi-Fi. But public Wi-Fi is often inherently insecure. Meanwhile, BYOD devices may be beyond the effective management of the IT security function, while still accessing company data.

The 2018 iPass Mobile Security Report revealed that 81% of CIOs surveyed said their company had experienced a Wi-Fi related security incident in the past 12 months—and that 62% of these occurred in coffee shops.

Lack of VisibilityCIOs and management teams need to monitor their mobile workforce in order to improve productivity and efficiency, and to measure the performance of their enterprise mobility strategy. But whenever an employee is self-pro-visioning Wi-Fi access, monitoring is not possible.

Cisco has forecast that, by 2021, more than 60% of smartphone data will be offloaded to Wi-Fi, meaning mobile workers will be invisible to management for significant periods.

Threats to ProductivityWhenever an employee is managing their own connec-tivity, they are not generating value for the business. Whether they’re hunting for a good Wi-Fi connection, navigating a portal, entering credit card details, creating accounts, enduring irritating splash pages, or setting up a Mifi device or tethering connection, they’re not doing what they’re paid to do.

Commercial deployments show that mobile workers can lose as many as 100 hours per year through poor connectivity and self-provisioning.

Cellular and Wi-Fi—Contrasting and Complementary As serious as these risks are, it is not surprising that many enterprises provide cellular connectivity but leave employees to fend for themselves on Wi-Fi.

While they deliver the same underlying capability, cellular and Wi-Fi are very different.

CELLULAR COSTS WI-FI COSTS

High, particularly when roaming

Unlimited plans are available, but often tiered for quality

Potential unexpected charges and penalties, e.g., overage and throttling

Often low cost compared to cellular

Much public Wi-Fi is free

CELLULAR COVERAGE / AVAILABILITY WI-FI COVERAGE / AVAILABILITY

Usually good outdoors

Can be problematic indoors

Unavailable inflight

Excellent and widely deployed in-building, including underground

Widely available inflight

CELLULAR QUALITY OF EXPERIENCE WI-FI QUALITY OF EXPERIENCE

Optimum user experience

Fully automated

Secure

Managed for QoE

Unmanaged experience

Fragmented networks

High security risk

Access can be time consuming and frustrating with ads, portals, payment etc.

Your team needs a mobility solution which combines a managed experience similar to cellular with the complementary footprint and cost-efficiency of Wi-Fi.

iPass SmartConnect: Intelligent Connection Management for the Enterprise That’s Always WorkingiPass SmartConnect is an intelligent, policy-driven connec-tion management solution for enterprise. It replicates the sophistication of the cellular experience across the world’s largest Wi-Fi network. It gives mobile workers the best available connection in the moment, and IT managers and CIOs unprecedented control and visibility of mobile devices.
