SURFING&INNOVATIONWORKSHOP18 november, 9.30am-2pm, Miramar Palace

SPEAKERS:Kevin Cook. Museum of British Surfing.‘Cookie’ made his first surfboard whilst at school in 1968, and has been surfing ever since. He was a teacher of PE, Languages and ICT for over 30 years at Ilfracombe Arts College (Ilfracombe Academy). Kevin has played a big part in lifesaving at a national level, and at his home beach of Woolacombe in North Devon. He developed & monitored the surf coaching scheme at the former British Surfing Association and is now involved in its replacement Surfing GB. As a Trustee of the Museum of British Surfing, Cookie plans to bring some ‘ancient background knowledge’ as the Museum moves into an exciting new phase.

“Preserving and Promoting our European Surfing Heritage”. Mr Cook will be talking about the origins of surfing in Europe – its birthplace – and how it grew into a sport, a way of life, a culture. Surf tourism gives European regions the chance to draw visitors and promote safety on the seashore and in natural areas.

Márcio Borgonovo dos Santos. All in Surf.Holding a Master’s degree in Human Sciences, Márcio Borgonovo is the founder of All in Surf, a start-up to develop a unique tool gathering multiple water navigation sensors and supplying companies with real data about product performance. Márcio is a member of ‘Sand, Surf and Sustainability’, a research team for sustainable development in the surf industry, social innovation and project-based learning.

“ From Research to Market: A Long Voyage ”. Mr Borgonovo is presenting a PhD project in which surfing is being studied in a controlled environment, based on lab tests and biomechanically equipped pools where simulated movements are analysed. All the measurements are gathered in a single device and, for the first time, transformed into quantitative data. After testing the device with Sebastian Steudtner, one of the best big wave surfers in the world, in Nazaré, Portugal, it is being adjusted to be launched into the market

Iker Aguirre. NSI Agency. An indefatigable entrepreneur, Iker Aguirre is a big name in action sports, where he has developed a variety of business projects focusing on market strategy, communication, marketing and innovation. Since 2009, he has been concerned with economic model review, considering that models are viable only when people are at the centre of the equation. In 2015, he became National Delegate for Well-Being at CJD France (French Centre of Young Business Owners) and in 2016 he joined a national research group on new management methods and business management.

“Rehumanising After Going Digital”.In the aftermath of the digital transformation, both big players and pure players reached the all-digital limit and now we are coming back to humanising relationships. The transformation has come full circle and we are back to the traditional roots of marketing and commerce, albeit reinvented in the light of the new, digital strategies and tools. What are our challenges, opportunities and prospects?
