OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD

Iagree with you that it is hard to believe that AshWednesday is only three days away. The forest green ofthe ordinal time will give way to the reddish purple ofLent and each of us will take up the penance of increased

prayer, fasting and abstinence, and charitable almsgiving.Decorations in the church will be intentionally understatedso that the environment speaks of the simplicity of theseason. I want to remind you of the important events ofthese forth days and I direct your attention to the schedulefor Lent on page four of this bulletin.

With the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy whichwas put in place by Pope Francis on December 8, there are anumber of Saturdays of Mercy that have been scheduled inour various counties. These will run from 1:30 to 4:00 PMwith a conference from Cardinal Dolan, a guided examinationof conscience, Eucharistic adoration, confession and aclosing. I will keep you posted on this. Remember, too, thatthere are a number of sites designated for the Holy Door ofMercy and one of them is at the National Shrine of Mary Helpof Christians right around the corner. All those who, onpilgrimage, enter a door of mercy with the proper intentionand disposition, and fulfill the conditions ordinarily attachedto a plenary indulgence (c.992), can obtain a jubileeindulgence once daily for either themselves or for the soulsof the faithful departed. Visit www.archny.org for much moreinformation on this.

I would like to write more to you about where weare in the pastoral planning process, Making All Things New.We need to reconvene the clusters to keep up the good workof inter-parish cooperation. I will be passing this on to youin a little while.

Here’s to a good beginning of Lent for all of us.Father LaMorte

ATTENTION LAY MINISTERS We need your assistance withdistribution of ashes and communion for the Ash Wednesdayliturgies (February 10). If you are able to serve, contact theparish office by telephone (947-1873) or e-mail([email protected]). If you need to request certain daysduring March or April on which you cannot be scheduled, please notify us at the parish office NLT Friday, February 12.After that date, we would like to ask you to be responsible toarrange for substitutes.

HAVE A WASHING MACHINE? Would you help clean the altarserver albs, especially if your son or daughter wears one? Please speak with Father to volunteer.

THE LITTLE BLACK BOOKS SIX-MINUTEMEDITATIONS ON THE WEEKDAY GOSPELS OF LENT Thanks to a generous donation from ourparishioner, Kevin Hartigan, we once againhave these wonderful reflection books for

you to have. Please pick up your book at the informationcounter. For six minutes a day during the 40 days of Lent, youcan spend some quiet time reflecting about what this seasonis all about. This Little Book will be your companion, and youcan take it with you wherever you wish. It can change yourday or maybe even change your life.

FORTY DAYS FOR LIFE This winter, Spring Valley will be oneof the 314 cities participating in the FORTY DAYS FOR LIFECampaign at 3:00 PM from Ash Wednesday, February 10 thruPalm Sunday, March 20, the largest ever, as believers pray, fast, stand vigil and spread a positive pro-life message in thecommunity. The Lord has blessed this campaign with amazingresults! To learn how you can be part of this life-saving effort, visit www.40daysforlife.com/springvalley. Come to PlannedParenthood, 25 Perlman Drive in Spring Valley from 9:00 AMuntil 5:00 PM. Later, come to our Perpetual EucharisticAdoration Chapel from 6:00 PM until 8:00 AM.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS DURING LENT The four North Rockland parishes are joininghands again this Lent as we offer our peoplethe opportunity to pray the stations of thecross at various times throughout the day.

This handy schedule is sure to meet everyone's needs. Stationsof the Cross will be offered at St. Mary in Haverstraw onWednesday evening at 6:00 PM; and on the Fridays of Lent at9:30 AM at St. Gregory Barbarigo, at 7:00 PM at St. Peter andat 7:30 PM at Immaculate Conception. We expect to becollaborating with each other much more as we continue withthe planning process called Making All Things New.

PETER’S PENCE OFFERING This is the only archdiocesancollection designed to support the world-wide charitable andspiritual works of the Holy Father. Please pray for Pope Francisand give generously to today’s appeal from the second 5% ofyour tithe.

THE APOSTLES’ CREED Beginning on thefirst Sunday of Lent (February 14) we willbegin using this at Mass instead of theNicene Creed. The church particularlyrecommends its use during Lent and Easter

because the words of this ancient creed have been used forcenturies as the basis of our baptismal promises, and theseseasons put a strong focus on baptism. During Lent weprepare those who will be baptized at Easter while readyingourselves to renew our own baptismal promises. As we recitethe Apostles’ Creed, it will stir up in our hearts ourcommitment to Christ which was first made at our ownbaptisms and prepare us to renew our promises this Easter.

THE SEASON OF LENTPurification and penance are recommended to us by the Church, not to make us hurt, but to make us whole. Those areas of our spiritual life whichhave not reached maturity or which have fallen back into childishness are where Lenten practices are applied. These forty days have been set asideto help us draw closer to the Christian way of life.

ASH WEDNESDAY + FEBRUARY 10 + A DAY OF FAST AND ABSTINENCEWhen you plan your Ash Wednesday, don’t just dash in and get your ashes and run. For the best results, you have to give yourforehead time to unwrinkle, and you shouldn’t immediately expose the dust to any passing breeze. What we recommend is that youarrive early for Mass or the prayer service and stay for the entire event. Let your head and your heart be touched by a lasting grace!Baptized individuals who have reached the age of reason and catechumens may receive ashes. Babies and young children who havenot yet received the Sacrament of Reconciliation need not be presented to receive ashes which are intended for those who are capableof personal sin.

The distribution of ashes will take place after the homily at the Masses at 7:00, 9:00, 10:00 AM (with the children only if school is insession), and at the prayer service at 7:30 PM. The children in religious education will receive ashes during class time. Only one fullmeal may be taken with two smaller meals for Catholics ages 18 to 59. Those over 14 years of age are obligated to abstain from meatand poultry. This may include some of our eighth grade students.

LENTEN SCHEDULE OF MASSESMonday through Friday at 7:30 and 9:00 AM; Saturday at 9:00 AM. Sunday at 5:30 (Saturday evening anticipated Mass), 7:30, 9:00,

    10:30 AM and 12:00 Noon.

THE SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION is available every Saturday afternoon from 4:00 - 5:00 and anytime upon reasonable request. Thechildren of our parish will go to confession by classes in early Lent. If you have been away for whatever reason, we assure you of awarm welcome home. Reconciliation Monday will be held on March 21 from 3:00 to 9:00 PM in every parish of the archdiocese.

LENTEN REGULATIONS Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 10 and ends on Holy Thursday, March 24. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. This is a serious matter within Church law. Fasting means only one full meal a day may be taken. Two smaller meals can be eaten to maintain strength but together they

should not equal another full meal. Catholics ages 18-59 are obliged to fast. Abstinence forbids the eating of meat or poultry. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged to abstain from meat or

poultry on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent. Remember all Fridays of the year are designated as Days of Penance during which we are encouraged to practice self-denial out

of gratitude for the suffering and death Jesus accepted for us. The time for fulfilling your Easter Duty extends from the First Sunday of Lent (February 14 ) to Holy Trinity Sunday (May 22).

OTHER OPPORTUNITIES FOR PRAYER, FASTING AND ALMSGIVINGMORNING PRAYER from the Liturgy of Hours each Monday - Saturday at 8:45.EXPOSITION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT IN THE PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION CHAPEL all the time.THE RECITATION OF THE ROSARY following the 9:00 AM Mass. FAMILY ROSARY the last Sunday of the month at 6:30 PM.MIRACULOUS MEDAL NOVENA is prayed each Monday morning after Mass.STATIONS OF THE CROSS every Friday morning at 9:30 AM; at 7:00 PM at St. Peter and at 7:30 PM at Immaculate Conception.OPERATION RICE BOWL The theme is “For Lent, For Life.” These cardboard rice bowls are the primary symbol of the hunger and hardship

faced by the poor in the developing world, many of whom subsist on small amounts of simple food, such as rice. Use these as aplace to collect your Lenten sacrificial giving. Then, bring them to church on Holy Thursday. Alms will be forwarded to CatholicRelief Services.

LIVING STATIONS OF THE CROSS In addition to our traditional Way of the Cross for this very beautiful, moving and inspirationalpresentation featuring the young members of our parish. Come pray with us on Friday, February 19 at 7:00 PM.

WOMEN’S NIGHT OF PRAYER at 7:30 PM on Monday evening. We encourage all those 18 and older to join us thismonth. “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose hope is the Lord. He is like a tree planted beside the water thatstretches out its roots to the stream: It fears not the heat when it comes, its leaves stay green; in the year of the drought itshows no distress, but still bears fruit.” Jeremiah 17: 7- 8.

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR THE SICK On Thursday, when the Church keeps the liturgical memorial of Our Lady of Lourdes, once againwe turn our eyes to those who suffer and call attention to the incurably ill, many of whom are dying from terminal diseases. As wepray for them, may they be encouraged to contemplate the sufferings of Christ crucified, and to know that their sufferings, united tothose of Christ, will prove fruitful for the needs of the Church and the world.

URGENT PRAYER NEEDS? When faced with a crisis situation, people need as many prayers as possible. If you havean urgent prayer need, call Cheryl at 429-4223 or e-mail [email protected].

HAIL TO THE SNOW REMOVERS Although there has been only one major storm, parishioners have noticed and praised the snowremoval from the 11 acres of our campus. We would like to acknowledge and thank Brian Fagan, our plowman for the good workthat he does. We should also thank those who volunteer to help dig out their neighbors after snowstorms and those who help drivehospital and emergency personnel to work. Thank you, also, to those many people who have been thoughtful enough to stay currentwith their weekly donations, especially when missing Mass because of the inclement weather. There is great potential for other stormsduring February and March. Let’s hope and pray for warm weather throughout the rest of the winter.
