FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK One of the most important teachings of the Second Vatican Council is the universal call to holiness. Every baptized person is
called by Christ to strive for that surpassing holiness about which Jesus speaks in his Sermon on the Mount. In other words, all
Catholics (clergy, religious, and laity alike) are held to the same high spiritual standard, though in different vocations and states-in-life; and that is to be holy, to love God and neighbor unconditionally. The Scripture readings for Mass this weekend focus on this
noble call. The first reading is taken from the Book of Leviticus, which is mainly known for its collection of ancient Jewish laws
concerning ritual worship, moral conduct and penalties for violations of the commandments. In the particular passage of
Leviticus that is proclaimed at Mass, Moses is telling the people that just as God is holy, set apart from everything…so the
community God chose for a special covenant relationship must be holy, set apart from surrounding nations and people by a way
of life that mirrors the holiness of God. That means God’s people must avoid idolatry of all kinds and moral corruption of all
types. In the second reading from St. Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, the Apostle reminds Christians that the Holy Spirit
dwells in them; and that the universal Church and each local church is “the temple of God,” the sacred home of the Holy Spirit.
This temple must be set apart from the surrounding culture and its exclusive reliance on human wisdom and wealth. The gospel
passage from St. Matthew is another installment of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, and a continuation of Jesus’ teaching on how
his disciples can fulfill the requirements of Jewish law by excelling in holiness. After citing the command of the Law which called
for a strictly limited, just retaliation for an offense (“an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth”), Jesus says there must be no
retaliation at all for an injury or offense. In fact, Jesus’ disciples must respond to an offense with kindness (like turning the other
cheek, giving a neighbor your cloak as well as your tunic when asked, and going the extra mile for someone in need). In perhaps
Jesus’ most challenging command, he teaches his disciples that they must love not only their neighbor, but their enemy as well.
Followers of Jesus are to pray for those who persecute them, and to treat them as they would treat a friend or family member.
In summary, Christians must strive to imitate the love of God, who “makes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain
to fall on the just and the unjust.” With the help of the Lord’s grace, may we all resolve to take another step forward in our
common goal to be holy people, completely devoted to God and the divine instruction given to us by his Son!
News and Notes: One of our early Lenten offerings is an opportunity to “Meet the Bishop” on Tuesday, March 7 at 7PM in the
OLA Church Hall. Bishop Mark O’Connell, the Regional Bishop of the North Region of the Archdiocese of Boston and the Pastor of
nearby St. Theresa Parish in North Reading, will be with us principally to answer any questions you may have about the Church.
Bishop Mark has also served for years as the Judicial Vicar and leader of the Metropolitan Tribunal and can respond to any
questions you may have about the annulment process or any other matter of Church law. Join us for an evening of conversation
with our new Regional Bishop!
Continuing my profile of our Collaborative Team members, we are blessed to have such a dedicated and capable Director of
Parish Ministries (DPM). Donna Delahanty serves our Collaborative in ways too many to mention. The role she has taken on
(DPM) is brand new in the Archdiocese. In this role, she manages all the ministries, both professional and volunteer, in our two
parishes. Donna has broad experience in lay ecclesial ministry, earning certification in the positions of Director of Religious
Education/Faith Formation and Pastoral Associate over the years. Here in our Catholic Community, she supervises our personnel
and programming in both adult and children’s Faith Formation, oversees the formation of our liturgical ministers (especially at
OLA), has a leadership role in our Rite of Christian Initiation for Children and Adults, and assists parishioners in the annulment
process, among many other responsibilities. Donna is a valuable ex-officio member of our Collaborative Pastoral Council and she
also serves on our Vocations Committee. We owe her a debt of gratitude for her ongoing, generous service in our midst.
Blessings to all of you in the week ahead!
If you are visiting our parish, we extend a warm welcome. Please feel
free to introduce yourself to the celebrant. If we can be of service to you
in any way, please let us know.

Francis Pham Pastoral Associate
There are many reasons why men are
called to the priesthood. I have been
asked this same question by many
people. The answer is a bit different for each
person. This is because it is a personal invitation
from God. My answer to that question is very
simple: I want to become a priest because I believe
this is the best way to love God and make people
happy by bringing Christ to them.
Some priests have told me that God had planted
the calling to the priesthood in their hearts at an
early age, but they only discovered it later in their
lives. This was true for me. I have always thought
about a vocation to the priesthood. When I was in
the 5th grade, I started serving as an altar boy in my
parish. It wasn’t until I was 17 years old, however,
that I thought seriously about the priesthood.
Fortunately for me, I was very blessed because my
parents, my catechists, and the priests I knew were
all very supportive of my vocation. They
encouraged me to offer my life to God.
In addition to all these influences, I was greatly
inspired by a priest in my parish when I was
growing up. This priest was a joyful person. I could
see that by the way he greeted everyone. He
showed everyone how much love he had for the
poor and the needy in the parish. As for me, I think
a priest should be the happiest person in the world
because he represents Christ.
VOCATIONS
Deacon John Cronin Transitional Deacon
I was 42 years old when I left teaching
elementary school and arrived at
Pope St. John XXIII National Seminary
in Weston. We’re typically referred to as “second-career” or “late vocation” seminarians, but neither
characterization is adequate. This is neither a
career, nor a vocation that only began later in life.
Growing up in Watervliet, NY, I felt that St. Brigid’s
Parish was my world. I idolized Fr. Joe, the pastor,
and the priesthood was always held out to me by
my teachers and family as an honorable possible
self. As a 10-year-old altar boy serving during the
Triduum, I remember being captivated by the love
of Christ on the Cross on Good Friday, captivated by
the Priesthood of Jesus Christ. I didn’t recognize it
at the time, but from that point on, my life would
never really be my own again, no matter how much
I tried to live it as if it were.
Though I abandoned the Church in my twenties,
until I was 32, God never abandoned me. He was
always at work in my life, especially when I was
adrift. Because of that, I never really left the path.
This life – this whole life – was part of the path God
laid out for me toward His priesthood. It was in this
path that I encountered his boundless mercy, and I
came to want priesthood and to embrace a selfless
love that first seized me on that Cross on Good
Friday. “The light shines in the darkness, and the
darkness has not overcome it.”
Why did I decide to enter the seminary and prepare to become a priest?

Youth Ministry’s
City Reach This weekend, 25 members of our Youth Ministry participated in an ecumenical effort with about 75 other young adults from across the state to provide food, clothing, and toiletries to the homeless. They spent the night in sleeping bags on the floor of the “Church on the Hill” in Boston, as they immersed themselves in this outreach.
Sunday Family Masses Both OLA and SMG have Sunday family Masses that are “hosted” by our Faith Formation students. On a rotating basis, students from different grades serve as greeters, readers, and gift bearers. Our celebrants often also invite the children to the sanctuary to gather around for a children’s homily or to be involved in some other special way. Through this, our younger parishioners learn about being active participants in their faith.
This past Sunday at the OLA 9:00 am Mass, Fr. Tony invited
the 2nd and 5th graders to come around the altar for the
Liturgy of the Eucharist.
Above: The bus — filled with our Youth Ministry volunteers and donations of clothing, food, and toiletries — bound for Boston. Below: Gabriella Sylvester-Bossi, Keira Rothwell, Kendall Gruttner, and Mia Lemieux at St. Paul’s Church, Boston, with the Mercy Bags collected by our Justice for Jesus organization. Thank you to our generous parishioners for their donations, but most importantly, for their prayers!

“A Bed for Every Child” At SMG’s 10 am Mass on February 12, we presented
Sister Linda Bessom of the Massachusetts Coalition for
the Homeless with a check for $5,785.81. This
represents the combined Coins for Kids collections from
both SMG and OLA over Advent, as well as individual
donations from parishioners. And as a special surprise, a
church donor added another check for $2,000 to that
total! Sr. Linda revealed that, in total, members of the
Lynnfield Catholic Collaborative donated enough to
provide 33 needy children with new beds. She was
overwhelmed with the generosity and kindness!
