Happy New Year! Happy New Decade! Two thousand ten or twenty-ten; not quite sure which pronunciation will stick. The freshness of a new year brings with it so much optimism and hope for good times ahead. Resolutions, professional goals and target weights come into focus, so charge forward this January and make 2010 your best year yet.

Getting fit and healthy is on the top of many New Year’s resolutions lists. From the current media frenzy covering our government’s attempt to overhaul healthcare (no further comment), to our personal fitness goals, the January edition of The Local DISH focuses on health and well-being for you and your family.

Ross Medical associates, featured on this month’s cover, has opened its fourth location in San Juan Capistrano to serve the healthcare needs of our local community. Combining family medical and urgent care services in a single office, 365 days a year, provides a much-needed convenience when you have a sick child on a Sunday morning. We also highlight a multitude of fitness professionals who are geared-up and ready to assist with your New Year’s workout goals. Take your pick from spin, Pilates, kettlebells, martial arts and more. For the younger set, we shed some light on the health and emotional benefits associated with dance.

Thanks for reading The Local DISH Magazine and we wish you a happy and healthy New Year!

If you are one of the millions of Ameri-cans who try to lose weight each year—and fail— the Hun-gry Heart owner Lauren Grant wants you to know the so-

lution could be locked in your brain.

“I struggled for years gaining and losing the same weight over and over again,” Lauren shares. “I had tried every diet in the book, and struggled with stress eating and yo-yo dieting for years. I didn’t have a program like Hungry Heart to help me. If I would have, I know I could have achieved my goals a lot easier. It has now been over sixteen years that I’ve kept the weight off.”

“I consult with emotional over-eat-ers, yo-yo dieters, binge eaters and people who are constantly making poor food choices,” she says. “What I share with my clients is that we have to change our thinking before we can be permanently successful at losing weight.”

Most people try a diet, do well, and then gain the weight back, Lauren

Hypnosis helps us to get out of our own way so that we can efficiently achieve our goals.”

“All hypnosis is self-hypnosis,” Lauren mentions. “You cannot be made to do anything that is not a part of your personal value system. The only things I can suggest during hypnotherapy are the things that you truly want to do.”

She likens the feeling of being hypno-tized to driving a route you’ve traveled hundreds of times. “After awhile, your subconscious takes over. You might even miss your exit on the freeway, but you know that you are driving and could stop if the car in front of you stops.”

“Sessions are conducted on an indi-vidual basis, so we can personalize them to your own core issues,” Lau-ren says. “The privacy of personal sessions allows clients to get com-fortable and get their mind in the state it needs to be in.”

“We focus on two things,” she de-scribes. “First we find out how to help them discover what their motivations are for eating when they aren’t hungry. Then we replace eating behavior with something that serves them better.”

says. The Hungry Heart helps its cli-ents handle their emotions indepen-dently of the food.

It’s not a diet, she notes, instead, it’s about changing one’s mindset. Hypnotherapy, behavior modification, and nutritional counseling work together to help you lose the weight—and keep it off.

“We do an initial one-on-one consulta-tion with questions and answers, then decide how to put a plan in place,” she says. “Everyone is different and deter-mining what type of changes need to be made are unique to the individual.”

The hypnotherapy portion of the program, she points out, “is very effective in helping us to work with ourselves rather than against our-selves. Most of us know what we want to do but for some reason we are not doing it.

The nutritional counseling buffers the hypnotherapy by helping clients learn how to shop for the right foods. Part of The Hungry Heart program also includes suggestions for exercise. Incremental changes are best,” she says. “We don’t just refer everyone to a big gym. This is about having our clients come out of the program with a better quality of life, having made healthy decisions because they want to, not because they’re supposed to.” Lauren shares that with her program, 85% of clients will stop overeating in the first two or three sessions.

Ross Medical Associates understands that pa-tients’ needs extend beyond 9 to 5 and Mon-day through Friday. They’ve responded to the community by offering both urgent care and family medical services in a single office... 365 days a year. Ross Medical’s extended hours, for example, help alleviate the stresses on working and single parents with convenient early morning and evening office hours. They take dedication to your health and wellness a step further with mod-ern technologies such as digital x-rays, electronic medical records and prescriptions sent directly to your pharmacy or filled right in the office.

Because patients have responded so positively

to “The Ross Way,” Ross Medical Associates has recently expanded with a new location in San Juan Capistrano. The successful combination of family practice and urgent care from the same physicians you already know and trust is the per-fect solution for today’s busy lifestyles.

“We strongly believe that if we make it pleasant and convenient for patients to come in, they’re going to take better care of themselves,” says Dr. Pedro Carrillo, a veteran physician of more than 20 years who practices at the new location. “We offer an expert level of care, in addition to bet-ter efficiency and affordability than emergency room care. Plus, any member of the family can receive care from the same group of physicians any day of the week.”

This remarkable medical group serves as a trib-ute to a groundbreaking icon in Orange County medicine, Dr. T.A. Ross. Instrumental in estab-lishing Mission Hospital, Dr. Ross was also its chief of staff for many years. He realized his vision of combining family practice and urgent care in Mission Viejo with Oso Family Medical Group

over thirty years ago. His next two ventures, in Rancho Santa Margarita and Ladera Ranch, es-tablished the Ross Medical Associates moniker.

The third location of Ross Medical Associates in San Juan Capistrano is the first to open since Dr. Ross passed away in 2008. His values and tradi-tions, however, live on in each of the physicians and staff members. In particular, Dr. Ross’ knack for providing genuine care on a highly personal-ized level still resonates today.

“Healthcare should always be a personal mat-ter,” says Dr. Gebhard, a Partner at Ross Medical Associates. “That’s the way Dr. Ross practiced medicine, and we think it’s still the most effective method. We all make an honest effort to get to know our patients and become an ongoing part of their lives. The connections we share enhance the care we provide in so many ways.”

We all know that a touch of genuine care can go a long way, but nobody knew it better than Dr. T.A. Ross. Thankfully, his personalized style of healthcare is still available today. Now, it’s available in San Juan Capistrano, too.

Each and every January, we vow to fulfill our New Year’s resolutions to get fit and healthy, but according to the obesity rate in America, most of us are still driving thru when we should be speed walking. If you feel like your backside is the size of Santa’s or you ate more than your share of sugar cookies and ham this holiday season; you’re not alone. Whether you hit the gym, the beach, or the pavement, make 2010 the year you start and stick to it. so put on some spandex, lay down your yoga mat, and blend up those leftover cranberries in a healthy smoothie.

As a parent and Director of a local dance studio with over 450 preschool through college aged students, it’s my job to provide a safe and nurturing environment for every child enrolled. When looking for a new activity this year, why not consider a dance class? It’s fantastic exercise and a fun option for children and parents seeking a healthy lifestyle.

In 2002, we opened Pacific Coast Academy of Dance (PCAD) in San Clemente. Since then, I’ve been delighted to witness how dance is more than exercise, camaraderie and yearly recitals. Experts agree; dance improves both the physical health and emo-tional welfare of children.

We all know that excess weight can lead to life-long health problems including diabe-tes and heart disease. As children consume increased amounts of fast food and junk food and spend too much time indoors watching television or in front of computers, an unfortunate rise in childhood obesity has occurred. At the studio, kids learn about optimum nutrition from their teachers and dedicated dancers. For boys and girls alike, dance can become a passion for a lifetime that promotes healthy lifestyles and combats poor eating habits.

dance PRovides socialiZation. The interaction between dancers improves social and commu-nication skills. Kids learn to cooperate and respect each other’s personal space. Dancers often move in unison, making connec-tion and cooperation with others integral to the experience.

dance eMPoWeRs students. Dance is an effective tool in improving body image, attentive-ness, and self esteem. It can reduce stress, anxiety and stage fright. Dancers are known for excellent posture and standing a little straighter always adds confidence.

danceRs can qualiFY FoR college scholaRshiPs. Applying for college is more competitive than ever, even with astronomical GPAs and SATs. There are simply too many well-qualified candidates. An ability to demonstrate a history of com-mitment to a sport, fine or performing art or a community orga-nization shows maturity and emotional intelligence.

dance builds FlexibilitY, stRength, enduRance and staMina. Treva Bedinghaus at About.com attributes four positive health benefits to dance. Flexibility is important for kids and adults, be-cause we tend to stiffen up with age. Dance classes begin with stretching exercises to achieve full range of motion for all the major muscle groups. Dancing builds strength by forcing mus-cles to resist against a dancer’s own body weight. Many styles of dance require jumping and leaping creating strength in the major leg muscles. Dancing elevates the heart rate and builds endurance and stamina.

Television hit shows So You Think You Can Dance and Dancing with the Stars are pop culture phenomenons. Some experts now claim that dance offers more health benefits than gym workouts. Specifically, dance movements are multi-directional versus straight forward motion, like on Stairmasters, treadmills, and elliptical equipment. Dance also requires agility, balance and various speeds of movement; skills that are typically not a focus in health clubs.

dance assists kids With sPecial needs. In preparation for a recent event, I discovered that dance is ther-apy for children with autism. Autism is a spectrum disorder and research shows that autistic children need multiple and different types of stimulation to process information. Children hear mu-sic, process a sequenced pattern, dance the sequenced pattern and then repeat the process. It is hearing, processing, doing and repetition that builds new learning pathways in the brain.

dance insPiRes.PCAD is designed for preschoolers through teens, but also of-fers dance courses for adults and professionals in contemporary, tap, jazz, hip hop, musical theatre and ballroom. Five coaches and fourteen performance teams take jazz, lyrical, hip-hop, and contemporary teams on the road to compete at local venues. Step up this New Year and enroll your children in a dance class or two. We all deserve a healthy, happy lifestyle and through dance our kids can achieve this and so much more.

Our thanks to The Local DISH! The magazine is working well. We have received lots of response from our ad and are thankful. You have put a lot of thought into the direction of the magazine, and the quality is obvious!Rick and debbie dunning, PaRadise JeWeleRs

The Local DISH is just that. It is the perfect place to advertise in our growing South Orange County communities! The March 2009 cover and story produced by The Local DISH Magazine brought us much new business. Publisher, Matt, and his staff were professional all the way, and the expert photographers and writer they sent to our office were perfect for my patients and their parents covered in the article. Great reporting, great photography and great job, Local DISH!

¡CALIENTE!coastal cantina

By rich ManninG

It is no secret that some of the best comfort food around is Mexican cuisine. This feeling

not only derives from the food itself, but also through the neighborhood vibe that these special places possess. Indeed, this unique ambience is joyfully celebrated at Dana Point’s new Caliente Coastal Cantina.

Housed in the former location of the Wicked Garden restaurant at PCH and Blue Lantern, Caliente offers an inviting, affordable, full-service dining experi-ence that is ideal for lunch with friends or dinner with the family. Features like their all day Taco Tuesday special, a covered outdoor patio, 24 flat screen TVs and a bounty of reasonably priced entrees ranging from $7 to $10 all help to make Caliente feel like an extension of home.

This great sense of community is perfectly balanced with the excitement of Caliente’s cuisine. Appetizers are called “Temptations,” and with good reason; items like their enormous Caliente Flautas, bursting with chicken and steak and served with a chipotle dipping sauce, are too mouthwatering to resist. Caliente is heavily focused on a healthy approach to some of their culinary offerings, such as their sumptuous pepitas, apple and bleu cheese infused Blue Moon Chicken salad and their chicken or carnitas version of their delectable pineap-ple tortilla wraps. Traditional fare is beautifully done at Caliente, as witnessed by their generously filled panko crusted grilled mahi mahi taco. Caliente rounds out this ambience through the creation of specialty drinks like their exotic jala-peno and mango Caliente Margarita and tasty Cerveza Margarita, where the

flavors of Patron and Corona beer merge to create a most refreshing libation.

Like any good neighborhood venue should, Caliente boasts an amaz-ing happy hour, stretching from 3 to 7,

Monday through Friday, featuring 2 for 1 drink specials to top off the day.

All of these elements wondrously combine to make Caliente an ideal spot to drop by and unwind with your brood or your buds.
