I draw inspiration from so many people that I interact with on a daily basis. Our community encompasses an amazing group of selfless and caring individuals who are quick to support those in need at a moment’s notice.

In this issue, local plastic surgeon, Dr. Mark Anton, shared his experience volunteering with Operation Smile in earthquake ravaged Haiti. Despite utter devastation, Dr. Anton was inspired by the Haitians’ capacity for strength and resilience. I hope his account inspires others to engage in charitable acts and to give to worthwhile organizations.

A few days ago, I bumped into Sandra with Pet Project Foundation. She shared a story of a good Samaritan who stopped to aid an injured dog on the side of the road. Pet Project Foundation was contacted immediately and reached a veterinarian who performed emergency surgery to save the animal’s life. The dog and its family were eventually reunited, thanks to the kindness of a stranger and this non-profit group.

Recently, I was introduced to the kind people at San Clemente’s Family Assistance Ministries. The organization provides direct assistance to over 600 families and seniors, from food and clothing to job counseling and temporary shelter. By adopting-a-family, you can directly impact lives in our local community.

Our cover story this month features the retail shops of Marbella Plaza. Read about this center’s diverse offerings, conveniently located in quaint San Juan Capistrano.

Here is Her remarkable approacH to emotional over-eating...

diet/bingeCycle

If you are one of the millions of Ameri-cans who try to lose weight each year—and fail— the Hun-gry Heart owner Lauren Grant wants you to know the so-

lution could be locked in your brain.

“I struggled for years gaining and losing the same weight over and over again,” Lauren shares. “I had tried every diet in the book, and struggled with stress eating and yo-yo dieting for years. I didn’t have a program like Hungry Heart to help me. If I would have, I know I could have achieved my goals a lot easier. It has now been over sixteen years that I’ve kept the weight off.”

“I consult with emotional over-eat-ers, yo-yo dieters, binge eaters and people who are constantly making poor food choices,” she says. “What I share with my clients is that we have to change our thinking before we can be permanently successful at losing weight.”

Most people try a diet, do well, and then gain the weight back, Lauren

Hypnosis helps us to get out of our own way so that we can efficiently achieve our goals.”

“All hypnosis is self-hypnosis,” Lauren mentions. “You cannot be made to do anything that is not a part of your personal value system. The only things I can suggest during hypnotherapy are the things that you truly want to do.”

She likens the feeling of being hypno-tized to driving a route you’ve traveled hundreds of times. “After awhile, your subconscious takes over. You might even miss your exit on the freeway, but you know that you are driving and could stop if the car in front of you stops.”

“Sessions are conducted on an indi-vidual basis, so we can personalize them to your own core issues,” Lau-ren says. “The privacy of personal sessions allows clients to get com-fortable and get their mind in the state it needs to be in.”

“We focus on two things,” she de-scribes. “First we find out how to help them discover what their motivations are for eating when they aren’t hungry. Then we replace eating behavior with something that serves them better.”

says. The Hungry Heart helps its cli-ents handle their emotions indepen-dently of the food.

It’s not a diet, she notes, instead, it’s about changing one’s mindset. Hypnotherapy, behavior modification, and nutritional counseling work together to help you lose the weight—and keep it off.

“We do an initial one-on-one consulta-tion with questions and answers, then decide how to put a plan in place,” she says. “Everyone is different and deter-mining what type of changes need to be made are unique to the individual.”

The hypnotherapy portion of the program, she points out, “is very effective in helping us to work with ourselves rather than against our-selves. Most of us know what we want to do but for some reason we are not doing it.

The nutritional counseling buffers the hypnotherapy by helping clients learn how to shop for the right foods. Part of The Hungry Heart program also includes suggestions for exercise. Incremental changes are best,” she says. “We don’t just refer everyone to a big gym. This is about having our clients come out of the program with a better quality of life, having made healthy decisions because they want to, not because they’re supposed to.” Lauren shares that with her program, 85% of clients will stop overeating in the first two or three sessions.

Nestled among mature trees in an inviting courtyard setting, Marbella Plaza is a one-stop destination for the discerning shopper. The neighborly, San Juan Capistrano center is located adjacent to the 5 Freeway on Ran-cho Viejo Road, between Junipero Serra and Ortega Highway - directly opposite Marbella Country Club.

Marbella Plaza features an array of shops, res-taurants and services where weekly errands, dining out with the family and finding a unique gift are accomplished with ease. From fitness to fresh produce, Marbella Plaza caters to shop-pers searching for a variety of products and ser-vices in a relaxed atmosphere, void of the hustle and bustle found at typical shopping malls.

The center opened to area residents in the 1990s, shortly after the establishment of Mar-bella County Club. For the past four years, owner Richard Bracamonte has operated Mar-bella Plaza. He is proud of the shopping expe-rience the center offers area residents. “It’s a convenient destination where one might drop the kids off at pre-school, workout, pick up the dry cleaning, have a manicure and stop by the market - all during a single visit. With our busy lives, being able to accomplish multiple tasks quickly, at one location, is of great benefit,” states Mr.Bracamonte.

Richard Bracamonte has also become Mar-bella Plaza’s newest restaurateur with the grand opening of Mr. B’s Pizza Kitchen. In February, his new, family-friendly Italian restaurant began serving up delicious piz-za, pasta, hearty sandwiches, crisp salads, fine wine and beer. “I want Mr. B’s to feel like your home away from home,” says Mr. Bracamonte. “I’ve strived to create a com-fortable, relaxing, fun-filled atmosphere, where delicious food is available at reason-able prices.”

Bracamonte has been successful in achieving a casual vibe at Mr. B’s. The open kitchen, red and white checkered tablecloths, airy dining room and outdoor patio make you feel right at home. If you’re looking for a place to catch your favorite team in action, pull up a chair and watch the game on one of their eight flat screen TVs. Don’t miss their family-friendly dinner feast, Sunday through Thursday, which includes a 10” pizza, spaghetti, lasagna, salad and Italian bread for just $19.95. If you are looking to celebrate your daughter’s 5th or Dad’s 50th, contact Mr. B’s Pizza Kitchen at 949.240.8100 to reserve their private party room for your next event.

Recent developments will soon make Mar-bella Plaza even more accessible to the sur-

rounding area. In January, the City of San Juan Capistrano voted in favor of relocating City Hall to a vacant parcel of land adjacent to the plaza. The City has approved preliminary plans to complete construction on the road running underneath the 5 Freeway, behind the plaza, uniting San Juan Capistrano’s Mission district with their Marbella neighbors. Bracamonte believes that the new City Hall will be more convenient for citizens in the community and that the expansion of the underpass will fur-ther unite the city of San Juan Capistrano.

That same year, Dr. Anton completed a facial surgery fellowship with Dr. William Magee, Jr. and other plas-tic surgeons in Norfolk, Virginia. Bill Magee and his wife, Kathy, founded Operation Smile in 1982 and since that time, their international network of volun-teers have treated more than 135,000 children world-wide and currently maintain programs in 51 partner countries. “Bill and Kathy are two of the most com-passionate and selfless people I’ve had the pleasure of knowing. It’s been remarkable to witness their ac-complishments and the life-altering outcomes the organization has achieved globally,” says Anton.

Past Operation Smile efforts have essentially focused on repairing and teaching local surgeons in the repair of cleft lips and palates, hence the name Operation Smile. The organization has perfected the logistics of airlifting volunteers and surgical supplies to a multi-tude of countries. Because of this ability and the im-mediate post-disaster need, Operation Smile was asked to dedicate resources to efforts in Haiti. They rose to the challenge and despite several obstacles, including severe storms on the east coast, were suc-cessful in transporting supplies and volunteers to Hinche and Fond Parisien, Haiti.

In spite of a difficult political history, apparent hope-lessness and an earthquake that decimated families and lives, “The Haitian people are still strong and resilient,” notes Anton. Returning home to Orange County, Anton was struck by the contrast between one of the poorest nations in the world and one of the wealthiest, “There appeared to be no great disparity in happiness and graciousness,” shares Anton.

As time passes, Dr. Anton hopes that the interna-tional community will not forget about the Haitians’ daily struggle and long-term plight. Anton believes that “Every dollar and donation has the capacity to change lives. “Whether you’re Harrison Ford donat-ing a private aircraft to transport medical teams and supplies into Haiti or a plastic surgeon utilizing medi-cal training to repair injuries, every bit counts— no matter how large or small.” Anton vouches for the tre-mendous impact that donations to Operation Smile make. “Your hard-earned dollars will be well-spent,” assures Anton. “I’ve seen it firsthand.”

Dr. Anton’s relationship with Operation Smile began twenty years ago when he traveled to Liberia providing medical relief to victims of the war-torn nation. “Working with Operation Smile in Liberia was a life-altering experience,” shares Anton. “I was humbled by the spirit and determination of people who faced incomprehensible obstacles. That experience will stay with me for a lifetime.”

Just when you think you’re over last year’s green beer-induced “flu,” you flip the calendar and there it is…St. Patrick’s Day. Although most of us can’t rattle off the holiday’s Church of Ireland origins, we sure can throw a “Mc” on the front of our last names and take off work in the middle of the week for a pint or two in celebration.

For conversation’s sake, St. Patrick is known as the patron saint of Ireland, but his most well-known feat—banishing all snakes from Ireland—is now regarded as folklore. The holiday marks the anniversary of St. Pat’s death, and traditionally, the Irish citizenry have enjoyed religious services the morning of March 17th and pub services for the rest of the day.

In the United States, we grow up with a vague sense of what St. Patrick’s Day should look like…we’re told to wear a green shirt to school so we don’t get pinched. Where on the historic timeline the pinching falls is debatable, but among adults, there’s no question—it’s all about piling into an Irish pub shoulder-to-shoulder, choking down a few Guinness, and making a meal of corned beef and cabbage (whether you like it or not!). Boston and New York have massive parades and Chicago even dyes their namesake river green for the day!

Here in South OC, we also do St. Paddy proud. Our local haunts go all out to honor Olde Eire and offer up all things Irish. If you’re a real die hard, you’ll want to start the day off early with a traditional Irish breakfast—corned beef hash, boiled potatoes and eggs. You’ll find what you’re looking for at both Molly Bloom’s (from 9:00 a.m.) and Hennessey’s Tavern (from 7:00 a.m.).

20

L O C A L H A P P E N I N G S

Molly BlooM’sSan Clemente’s MoLLy bLooM’S doesn’t stop with breakfast. They’ve got live Irish music and bagpipes all day, along with Irish stew and fish-n-chips. The cover is $5.00 after 4:00 p.m. Expect a crowd!

With locations in Dana Point and Laguna Beach, a stop by henneSSey’S TAvern must not be overlooked. After breakfast, Hennessey’s pulls out all the stops (and the chairs and most of the tables) to make room for all the revelry. They have everything you’d expect, plus shot specials and great collectible merchandise. Stop in for a pint of Harp or a snifter of Jameson and leave with a souvenir to remind you of all the fun you had! The Hennessey-owned Fish Bucket, next door to the Dana Point tavern, has specials all day and a DJ all night.

PATSy’S iriSh Pub in Laguna Niguel is another local favorite. Family-owned Patsy’s has 26 years of experience rolling out the green carpet for both Irishmen and wannabes. Patsy’s opens the doors at 9:00 a.m. and greets the day with live music, dancers, bagpipes and even karaoke, all without a cover charge. You’ll find all the traditional fare here, too, but the bread pudding is a must-do.

For a not-so-traditional twist, CArbonArA TrATToriA in San Clemente turns the tables on its Italian roots and puts out an authentic Irish feast in honor of Mary Carbonara, the Irish half of the Carbonara duo. We all agree with Tony Carbonara when he says, “Everyone’s Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, even if he’s Italian!” Carbonara Trattoria offers lunch from 11:30 to 2:00 and dinner from 4:00 to 10:00.

by Shelley hudSon

Remember, the only way to make sure you keep the luck o’ the irish on your side this st. patrick’s day is to enjoy the festivities in moderation and take advantage of a designated driver or taxi to get you home safely.

Friday, March 19th and saturday, March 20th mark the world-renowned celebration of the return of the swallows to san Juan capistrano. each year, visitors from all over the world gather in the celebration as the faithful little birds fly their way back to the historic Mission San Juan Capistrano.

The swallows are said to migrate annually to Goya, Argentina in October and return to their spring and summer home in San Juan Capistrano each March. The Swallows

celebration began centuries ago when Mission Padres observed that the birds’ return roughly coincided with St. Joseph’s Day on March 19th. The celebration has achieved international prominence ever since.

Be part of this year’s celebration! Beginning at 9:00 a.m. on March 19th, fun and festivities for the entire family will include:

* live entertainment and food

* Mission parish School performances

* the ringing of the historic bells

* an official press conference

* a debut of the award winning adult audio tour in italian

Kicking off this year’s festivities are the authentic sounds of Mariachi Espuelas de Mexico in the front courtyard area. The group, led by Director Jose Luis Jañez, was formed in 1994 and has played at The Hollywood Bowl and most Mariachi festivals throughout the U.S.

After the ringing of the historic bells, Renée Bondi will perform Leon René’s hit song, “When the Swallows Come Back to Capistrano.” Born and raised in San

Juan Capistrano, Renée is an author and re-cording artist who’s traveled throughout the U.S. sharing her story and music.

On the Serra Quad Stage, enjoy Journeys to the Past with Jacque Nunez, a descendent of the Juaneno Indians who built the Mission. After retir-ing from a 17-year career as a teacher, Jacque has shared her story for 13 years to over 200,000 chil-dren. She also received the 2009 California Indian Education Association’s Award for Distinguished Educator of the Year.

Later, Sajama, Music of the Andes will perform on the Serra Quad Stage at the Mission. Sajama, named af-ter the highest peak in the Andes, is a unique group with Andean musical roots. The group was formed in 1990 by its leader, Ruben G. Ortiz. Sajama has performed in numerous events, concerts, movies and television shows throughout the United States, including many years at the Mission.

The history of St. Joseph’s Day, the Swallows legend and community presentations are just of few of the many events to enjoy at Orange County’s only mis-sion. Mission San Juan Capistrano is located at 26801 Ortega Highway. For a complete schedule of events, visit www.missionsjc.com or call 949.234.1315.

THAI JuAn

On

Twenty years after establishing itself as the go-to Thai restaurant in Dana Point, Thai This has opened a sister location in San Juan Capist-rano – Thai Juan On. Clever bilingual wordplay on both marquee and menu touts a solid collection of traditional dishes with a creative flair.

Fresh off its victory at Taste of San Juan 2010, Thai Juan On’s “Appethaizer” menu is a true crowd pleaser. The Curry Pocket - a delicious deep fried pouch filled with curried chicken and diced potatoes is a perfect place to start. FYI, menu items are numbered for easy reference: light and crunchy do-it-yourself cabbage wraps with minced chicken, onions and cilantro are called #17 Clumsy Cluck. My all-time fa-vorite is #6 Golden Thaiangle - a crispy fried flour tortilla stuffed with diced shrimp, fish and avocado accompanied by a crisp, fresh, cucumber sweet & sour sauce.

The main course offerings are a tour of all five Thai flavor zones (spicy, sweet, sour, salty and bitter)! Top of the list is #31 Red Devil – this red beef curry has the perfect slow- cooked, tender pot roast texture and the deep red curry sauce is silken perfection. Another sensation is #52 Roadside Cuisine- prawns, scallops and rice noodles alongside freshly steamed vegetables in creamy green curry sauce. Beer lovers will be delighted by the unique selection of Thai beers including Singha and Nakhon Lemongrass — a Belgian-style wit beer brewed with jasmine rice and citrusy lemongrass.

Thai Juan On’s storefront is deceptive, because once inside, the high ceilings, bamboo-screen walls and Metro-Asian décor will welcome you into an ample dining room. The bar features an eye-catching countertop fashioned from thousands of wine corks collected from Thai This’ bar over the years. At Thai Juan On, happy hour is EVERYDAY from 3 - 6 p.m. (try their small plates bar menu, available all day.) For the perfect late night hot spot, Thai Juan On is open until 11 p.m., long after other South OC establishments have called it a night.
