All of our images are reviewed by board certified radiologists who specialize exclusively in breast imaging. We provide digital mammography which is faster and increases both accuracy and quality.

So don’t put it off any longer. Get a more comfortable mammogram and results you can trust. Next day appointments for screening mammograms are available. Call today for an appointment at our San Clemente screening location, 949-452-7200.

Like shoes, some mammograms are more comfortable than others.

NOVEMBER 2009 thElOcaldish.net 6

I look forward to the feast I’ll be consuming on Thanksgiving day like no other meal of the year. When I can coax my wife into the kitchen, she whips up fantastic meals, but there’s something extra-special about the turkey day dinner she prepares. I’m not sure what makes this particular dinner so heartwarming. Is it that Thanksgiving’s a holiday focused on food and family or the turkey and stuffing sandwiches I’ll be enjoying for days after? Candied yams, cranberries and pumpkin pie represent to me the official start of the holidays. Are you ready?

There are a few key events in November that you’ll want to mark on your calendar. The Original Taste of San Clemente on November 6th is a flavorful and fun event. Sample food and drink from local eateries and wineries while dancing the night away at the Rancho San Clemente Tennis Club. On Thanksgiving morning, Dana Point’s annual Turkey Trot is a good time for a great cause. Check out kid races and costumed runners - all in the beautiful setting of Dana Point Harbor. The last Saturday of the month features Puttin’ on the Glitz, hosted by the downtown San Clemente merchants. Christmas kicks off on Avenida Del Mar with this post-Thanksgiving event. From horse-drawn carriage rides to Santa’s arrival on a fire truck, there’s something for each member of the family to enjoy.

Our cover story this month features St. Anne School, a state-of-the-art learning facility offering classes from preschool through eighth grade. St Anne prides themselves on providing a comprehensive approach to education - incorporating the academic, social and spiritual development of each child.

Let’s be grateful this season for what we have, knowing there are many in our country and abroad suffering during these difficult times. Thanks, as always, for checking out The Local DISH Magazine. We hope you have a happy and healthy holiday!

As an independent Catholic school, par-ents join with the faculty and staff in creat-ing a vibrant learning community in which students grow and truly flourish. This warm, welcoming community prepares students to succeed with future responsibilities in education and society through the devel-opment of educational, academic, social and religious discipline. St. Anne helps stu-dents discover their God-given talents and encourages them to broaden and strength-en those gifts and interests for future suc-cess. “We seek to instill in our students a love of learning that they will take with them throughout their lives; we strive to be the place where that love of learning begins,” says Adams.

Dedicated to the highest standards of a traditional education in a small classroom setting, St. Anne provides time-proven el-ements of instruction and discipline, with modern technologies and a contempo-rary understanding of childhood learning processes. All of this is delivered in a safe atmosphere of support, encouragement and close personal attention. Course-work is relevant, challenging, integrated

across content areas and grounded in the California State Subjects Frameworks and Academic Content Standards. Director of Curriculum Joanne Williams notes, “Our expansive curriculum offers breadth for student exploration and well roundedness and depth to ensure that all students are challenged intellectually.”

Creating the finest learning environment for students is a top priority. All St. Anne kindergarten through 8th grade facilities feature state-of-the-art classrooms with “smart” technology, enabling students to learn and explore in an engaging, in-teractive way. Upgrading classrooms was part of the 2009 GET SMART! Technology Campaign that provided funding for inter-active white boards, new computers for Preschool and other enhanced technology throughout the campus.

St. Anne believes the teaching of values is as important as the academic educa-tion it offers.

“Our students are genuine, respectful, ar-ticulate, and compassionate,” comments Randy Adams. Community outreach is

one way the school emphasizes service to others and is an important part of stu-dent life at St. Anne. In addition to help-ing local food banks, holding community blood drives and working with the Sheriff’s department and Marines on various pro-grams, all St. Anne Middle School students are required to participate in 24 hours of Christian Community Service per year.

St. Anne also encourages parent partici-pation in the classroom, with community service and fundraising projects, but it is unique in that participation is completely voluntary. “Our parents want to be here to help with their children’s education,” says LuAnn Wilson, Director of Marketing. “Our school really flourishes due to the tremen-dous support of our families.”

To learn more about St. Anne School, please contact Lil Ray-Reed in the Admissions Office at 949-276-6750 to sched-ule an appointment for a private tour of the campus. St. Anne is currently enrolling and accepting applications for the 2010-2011 school year.

St. Anne

St. Anne School has evolved tremendously since its

inception more than seventeen years ago. Today, the

beautiful campus is home to more than 750 students

and bustles with vitality and energy that the preschool

through 8th grade students bring to school

each day.

Firm in his belief that St. Anne is one of the fin

est

schools in South Orange County, Head-of-School Randy

Adams talks about his commitment to excellence in

all aspects of education. “Our faculty, staff and Board

of Directors are dedicated to reaching our stud

on all levels of learning: intellectual, spiritu

Organizers of the 32nd annual Dana Point Turkey Trot hope to increase the number of trotters in this year’s Thanks-giving Day race and reduce the event’s carbon footprint. The Turkey Trot, which takes place on November 26th, includes a Cox Kids’ Fun Run, a costume contest, entertainment and much more. The family-fun event benefits the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange Coun-ty. Last year’s Turkey Trot raised over $40,000 for the local charity.

The Turkey Trot is going greener in 2009 by replacing the 12,000 plastic bags that are handed out to runners with reusable ones. The bags, containing coupons and more from local businesses and organi-zations, are given to each runner as an event “thank you.” The move is meant to benefit the environment and reduce the number of bags that enter the land-fill and ocean.

“By reducing the number of plastic bags handed out, experts say that we can re-duce our carbon footprint by roughly 2.5 metric tons,” said Nichole Cham-bers, CEO of the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce, which hosts the annual event. “It’s essential for everyone to do what they can to protect and preserve

our environment, and we think this is a simple step to take.”

According to The Wall Street Journal, the U.S. goes through 100 billion plastic shopping bags annually. An estimated 12 million barrels of oil is required to make that many bags. Plastic bags cause more than 100,000 sea turtle and other marine animal deaths every year when animals mistake them for food.

Opting for reusable bags also comple-ments this seaside city’s efforts to reduce the use of plastic bags at local restaurants, retailers, city facilities and city-sponsored events. In July, the City Council adopted a voluntary plastic bag and Styrofoam reduction program in an effort to reduce litter, protect water quality and the envi-ronment. The chamber is working with local businesses to spread the word and encourage green alternatives.

Event organizers feel the Dana Point Tur-key Trot 5K and 10K run/walk will serve as a good example of how we can all “go green.” The Turkey Trot is one of the larg-est events in the nation, attracting more than 10,000 participants, from beginners to elite runners. The scenic, coastal race winds through Dana Point Harbor, along

Doheny State Beach and past the Ocean Institute.

Volunteers are the heart and soul of any event and Turkey Trot organizers are look-ing for individuals, clubs and associations to contribute their time to this special race. All volunteers will receive a race team t-shirt and refreshments. Commu-nity service hours are honored for those volunteering at the event.

Racers are also encouraged to donate above and beyond the entry fee or to develop a pledge drive to raise funds for the Second Harvest Food Bank.

The 10K race will be capped at 4,000 runners this year, and sold out online in 2008. Early registration for all races ends November 1st, but you can register up to and including race day. The event has expanded the age range on the Cox Kids’ Fun Run 1 mile race (ages 5-12) and the number of participants to 500 this year. Each child participant receives a finisher’s medal. Sign up soon before it sells out! Avoid long lines on race day by registering and/or picking-up your bib, t-shirt and timing chip at the pre-registra-tion site on Wednesday, November 25th from 10am to 5 pm.

The Taste will be held at the beautiful Courtside Restaurant on the grounds of the rancho San Clemente Tennis and Fitness Club, located at 111 vista Montana in San Clemente. The event takes place from 6-10 pm on Friday, november 6th, marking the seventeenth anniversary of The Original Taste of San Clemente.

The evening will include dancing under the stars to the fabulous sounds of The Corvettes. One of Southern California’s favorite show bands, The Cor-vettes feature the original keyboardist from Sha Na Na. The band has been entertaining fans since 1988 with tight harmonies, costume changes and an authentic street corner doo-wop sound. Whether they’re performing tunes from Elvis Presley, The Four Tops, Sam Cooke or Sonny & Cher, The Cor-vettes provide great musical entertainment with widespread appeal.

Admission to The original Taste of San Clemente is $75 per person. The ticket price includes a commemorative engraved wine glass or beer mug, unlimited tastings of food and libations, live entertainment and valet parking. Contact the San Clemente Chamber of Commerce to purchase your tickets in advance; tickets will not be available at the door. For more information, call 949.492.1131 or visit www.scchamber.com.

ickets are going fast to the annual Chamber of Commerce’s Taste of San Clemente. It’s no surprise that this elegant event was sold out last year. The Taste will feature culinary masterpieces from over twenty of the area’s finest restaurants, wine tastings from sixteen premium vineyards

throughout California, ice cold microbrews and tasty desserts. Everyone is sure to find something pleasing to the palette. Discover new restaurants in our community to enjoy long after the event concludes.

“Gold Fever - the Untold stories of the california Gold Rush” has arrived at Mission San Juan Capist-rano. The first of several traveling exhibits to be fea-tured at Orange County’s only mission, Gold Fever is a fascinating exhibition that presents a treasure trove of Gold Rush era stories. The exhibit opened October 15, 2009 and runs until March 30, 2010.

Gold Fever is no ordinary exhibit. It’s an interactive learning experience that brings the Gold Rush to life as children and adults have the opportunity to pan for gold and wear period costumes.

The exhibition spotlights the remarkable stories of individual gold seekers who emigrated from all parts of the world during the tumultuous and color-ful Gold Rush era of the mid-1800s, and examines the impact that James Marshall’s discovery contin-ues to have on all of California’s people, cultures, environment, politics and economy.

Twenty-four photo-mural panels present 1,000 square feet of fascinating history of primary documents, photographs, da-guerreotypes and Gold Rush era paintings. The exhibit examines California before the fateful discovery of gold in the American River, the experience of vigilante justice, life in rowdy gold camps, Gold Rush era commerce and farming and the shaping of California’s future. As part of the exhibit, the Mission is also of-fering “Journeys to the West,” a class pro-gram for groups of 50 to 100 that provides hands-on learning to reinforce the subject material from Gold Fever. Jacque Nunez, the 2009 Educator of the Year, teaches the weekly program each Friday, allowing stu-dents to rope a steer, make an arrowhead, weave wool and pan for gold.

PiCTured: Lugo Family at Rancho in Bell, California, 1888. Photographer Unknown. Collection of the Seaver Center for Western History Research, Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History.

Not long ago, James and Ann Niederhauser were challenged by a friend to bring traditional Neapolitan pizza to South OC. Taking the challenge, they traveled and tasted and gener-ally immersed themselves in researching the pizza of Naples, even building a wood fire oven in their back yard. The fruits of their labor have arrived in San Clemente as Izza (pronounced EE-ZUH) Neapolitan Pizzeria, conveniently located on Cami-no de Estrella at the former site of West of the 5.

Just as Europeans attribute wines and cheeses to specific regions and conditions, Neapolitan pizzas are, by definition, made from very specific soft flour, fresh yeast and sea salt. The dough must be hand-formed, dabbed with a light to-mato sauce made from San Marzano plum tomatoes and be quickly baked in a wood fire oven. Every pizza that leaves Izza’s open kitchen adheres to these strict guidelines, and the resulting thin crust, scattered with high quality toppings is nothing short of fabulous.

Marinara napolentana (no cheese), Margherita and Mar-gherita extra are the three traditional Neapolitan variations, but Izza’s other pizza specialties are definitely a must-try. The bruni starts with the typical light tomato sauce, then adds sausage crumbles, salami, sliced onion and oregano. norcia begins the same, but finishes with pepperoni, grilled pep-pers and grated grana padana cheese. Choose from ten perfect Izza pizza classics, or create your own pizza from an extensive list of toppings.

Izza offers several preludes to pizza including the cauliflower gratinee. Bite-sized florets are sprinkled with Asiago cheese and roasted in the pizza oven to tender perfection. We also loved the roasted Capri vegetables – red and yellow pep-pers, eggplant, mushrooms, yellow squash, zucchini and as-paragus are lightly seasoned, roasted and served alongside a warm, relaxed slab of smoked mozzarella.

Make sure to leave room for some sweets because Izza of-fers several outstanding house-made desserts. The mas-carpone and ricotta cheesecake is served with various fruit sauces (according to season); and the butterscotch budino (luscious Italian pudding) is perfectly salty-sweet and served with fresh whipped cream. Izza complements its specialty pizzas with a wide selection of vino by the glass or the bottle, available tableside or at their cozy bar.

My boyfriend and I went to Izza last night. The 80’s

music was rockin’ and people were

filling the tables of this new restaurant.

The bar proudly displayed bottle

after bottle of wine. From our table, we watched our adorable Italian

waitress give our order of Traditional

Bruschette, the Norcia, and the

Vegan to the chefs behind the glass. Next time

I’d like to sit at the counter in front of the glass to watch them make their

delicious creation. The Bruschette was fresh and

flavorful. The pizzas are 10 inches and

come sliced in four gigantic, dreamy

pieces. The cheese came perfectly

melted...
