Whatever happened to the Sears Catalog? I may be dating myself, but as Christmas approaches I fondly recall the phone book size publication I used as a child to create my wish list for Santa. Mom would place the catalog in our rumpus room (another reference from the 20th century) and I’d start writing. Legos, those newfangled Nerf balls, TOMY electronics, Hot Wheels and Milton Bradley board games were always hot items I hoped to see under the tree on Christmas morning. Narrowing down my must-haves was no easy task and Mom would inevitably cut me off as I eclipsed double digits. I wondered why she insisted that I include page numbers for Santa, but Mom always knew best.

In this month’s issue, check out our Holiday Gift Guide. Please support our local retailers and choose from a multitude of gift ideas available for any budget.

Our December cover features Christy Newman, an internationally recognized interior designer and owner of a toucH of eleGance boutique in San Juan Capistrano. Stop by her store, across from The Mission, for great gifts or interior design and event planning services.

The Local DISH wishes you and yours a happy, healthy holiday season!

A Touch of

“Just look around!” said Kelly Ann from San Clemente when asked why she’s shopping at A Touch of Elegance. “I love the furniture and accessories here. I’ve purchased many items for my home and am looking for more.”

Unique and nostalgic collectables, furniture, florals, decorative accessories and gifts abound at this quaint boutique located in historic San Juan Capistrano. A hand-carved reclaimed-teak coffee table from Indonesia is being admired by a customer who’s also contemplating the purchase of a beautifully framed oil painting.

Designer and owner, Christy Newman, searches the world for unique pieces to adorn the store and satisfy her clientele’s discriminating decorating needs. “I find artisans and pieces that will work with the taste of our clientele,” said Newman, who’s extensive experi-ence in the business spans 28 years.

Although large pieces are the foundation of the shop, eclectic lamps, sconces, pillows and accessories are thoughtfully layered throughout. A collection of bejeweled crosses, framed as art, accompany amusing funky monkey lamps and a wooden woman whose legs dangle off a shelf as she overlooks the room.

A Touch of Elegance also designs custom silk arrangements offering the finest artificial flowers and plants available. Newman believes that floral arrangements are an integral part of design – incorporating the element of nature into interior settings. Designs range from desert succulents to lush tropical bouquets, expertly created with scale and materi-als selected to enhance each space.

spECial EvEnts“Christy’s ability to organize, design and decorate for holidays and parties is known in-ternationally. She has managed and designed several company events that continue to

be topics of discussion on six continents… I can safely say no one can hold a candle to the work she does.” —edWin fuller, President / Managing director of Marriott international

intERioR DEsignKnown internationally for her work with high-profile clients and upscale homes, Newman warmly embraces projects

of any size and budget. “Our interior design business is very invigorating and doing quite well. We’ve designed for some wonderful people who value their homes and desire to live in an environment conducive to their lifestyle,” said Newman. Commercial interior design is a growing part of the business. “Many businesses are looking to create more peaceful and serene work environments for their staff, believing that a calm, creative environment helps productivity and provides a sense of pride in the workplace.”

thE BoutiquEThe boutique is currently decked-out with holiday décor to ring in the spirit of the season. Brimming with a festive

selection of gifts and that perfect sparkle and shine for your home, A Touch of Elegance is a must-visit shopping destina-tion this season.

With inspiration From the Christmas home tour Mark your calendars! The Assistance League® of Capistrano Valley (ALCV) will present its fourth annual Christmas Home Tour on Sun-day, December 6th from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The self-guided tour showcases four distinctive estates in Nellie Gail Ranch festively decorated for the holidays. Participants will have the opportunity to view these exquisite homes and acquire countless holiday decorating ideas. Local artists will also be on hand, offer-ing items for sale. Each home will feature a delicious dish prepared by The Cellar Restaurant of San Clemente, Sundried Tomato of San Juan Capistrano, Hapa J’s of San Clemente or Simply Fondue of San Juan Capistrano.

Assistance League of Capistrano Valley is a nonprofit volunteer or-ganization whose members are dedicated to developing and pro-viding humanitarian services throughout the community. As ALCV’s major fundraiser of the year, proceeds from the Christmas Home Tour help support their four major philanthropic programs includ-ing Operation School Bell, Kids on the Block, Links to Learning and Hands on Literacy. All of these endeavors benefit needy children and struggling students in the Capistrano Unified School District and on the Camp Pendleton Marine Base.

ALCV volunteers will be on-site during the tour to offer interesting facts and features and answer ques-tions about the beautifully adorned homes. Please note that the homes participat-ing in the tours are not wheelchair accessible or suitable for small children. The ALCV recommends wearing comfortable, low-heeled walking shoes for the event.

RED VELVET ASIAN CAfé (ORTEGA VILLAGE CENTER)

RED VELVET

asian cuisine and tea house by sir bazil

I’ve been fortunate to experience a wide variety of food in my life and am thrilled to have unearthed a hidden gem right in San Juan Capistrano. I first learned of red velvet aSian café about 6 months ago and have been a regular there since.

What makes this Asian restaurant a standout? First, as a family-owned and operated establishment, a certain level of pride is apparent in the food. Second, a party of four is able to indulge in a delicious meal of ample portions for under thirty dollars. If that doesn’t grab your atten-tion, they also feature a HaPPy Hour, Monday through Saturday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m, offering substantial appetizers priced at three dollars accompanied by sake for just a buck.

Brother and sister team, Jack and Wendi Ha, created and perfected the rec-ipes at Red Velvet. Though both are of Chinese descent, they were raised in Vietnam and their food aptly reflects this cultural fusion. The diverse menu includes signature dishes from several Asian countries and runs the gamut from Pho, a flavorful Vietnamese soup, to an excellent Pad Thai. My person-al recommendation is the black PePPer beef - prepared Vietnamese style and simply delicious! Another favorite is the Walnut SHriMP, which I recently experienced for the first time, but will not make it the last.

Red Velvet offers a vast and flavorful selection of teas and have attracted a clientele of aficionados. Their organic loose leaf varities, imported from China, give patrons a healthier alternative.

Wendi’s daughter, Helen, and her niece, Joanne, welcome guests at the front of the house. Both are knowledgeable, friendly and delight in explain-ing and recommending their menu favorites.

The staff at Red Velvet goes above and beyond, providing a level of per-sonal attention you may not have experienced elsewhere. Knowing my love of strong, dark ale, they searched for and delivered a Chinese version from one of their vendors. Now that’s customer service!
