Happy Mother’s Day Top by Wildfox

MAY 2012 • VOL. 6 • ISSUE 5

M A G A Z I N E

This Mother's Day will be the first my wife and I will share with our little baby girl. As thrilled as I am that she sometimes prefers her "dada" over her "mama," I know that this passing phase won't last long. Nothing can ever compare to the bond between a mother and her child so make sure to do something extraordinary to celebrate mom. Whether you're cooking up a champagne breakfast in bed or a magical disappearing act that gives her a stretch of time alone, do whatever it takes to make it a special May 13th. She deserves it!

Our cover this month features Dennis Penman, owner of Renaissance Home Furnishings. After 14 years in San Juan Capistrano, Penman and his team of designers have moved on up the 5 Freeway to Furniture Row in Laguna Hills. Check out the new digs and take advantage of Renaissance's Grand Opening Sale all month long.

Thanks for reading The Local DISH Magazine!

Renaissance Home Furnishings in San Juan Capistrano has just enjoyed a renaissance of its own. This long time local favorite has moved on up the 5 Freeway to "Furniture Row" in La-guna Hills, bringing an even greater number of South OC families its signature brand of fantastic furniture at competitive prices with bend-over-backwards customer service.

After a Caltrans project was approved to in-stall a sound wall between the already hidden gem and its main source of exposure—the busy 5 Freeway—owner Dennis Penman de-cided it was time to pack up his sofas, cabi-nets and rugs and head to greener pastures. The showroom's new location in Laguna Hills promises to deliver customers increased ac-cessibility and a more pleasurable shopping experience. Penman and his team of design-ers are excited about the transition and relish the opportunity to introduce themselves and their vast array of products to an even larger slice of Orange County.

Despite his enthusiasm about this exciting undertaking, Penman’s optimistic forecast for Renaissance Home Furnishings is a tad bitter-sweet. His almost 14 years in San Juan Cap-istrano have earned him lifelong friends and fiercely loyal clients. In fact, when news of the Caltrans project first broke, he searched with-out success in San Juan and San Clemente for

a suitable commercial space for his reloca-tion. "I'm thrilled with our new location and that it's only a few miles away. My goal was to stay local to continue to service the cus-tomers who have helped build this business," Penman shares.

Dennis hopes to maintain these relationships as well as to develop even more with families in the ten additional communities by which he’s now surrounded. The new Avenida de la Carlota location positions Renaissance among other furniture retailers in what has become known as a destination point for home shop-pers from all over the county. “We’re just eight minutes and two turns up the freeway,” he says, “and everything about the new store is more convenient.”

Although the environment has changed, the same friendly and talented staff Renaissance’s patrons have come to rely on are along for the ride. Complimentary in-home design consulta-tions will continue to provide discerning clients with a professional opinion and a style direc-tion. Penman asserts, “We help our customers complete their homes. Our designers can fill an empty room from rug to chandelier or help update a dated décor. We get involved in cus-tomers’ profiles so we can learn how they want their homes to function and make the best use of their space.”

Dennis Penman attributes Renaissance’s lon-gevity to his fundamental business philoso-phy—“High volume equals big discounts from our vendors and we pass that savings along to our customers,” he says. The variety of mer-chandise, both ready-made and custom, make it easy for clients to add to, update or re-do. Penman emphasizes that all of his upholstered furniture is made in the U.S.A. and the average lead time is only two to five weeks. Customers

can also select from hundreds of chairs, sofas, tables, cabi-nets, art, lamps, mir-rors, rugs and acces-sories right off the showroom floor. Renaissance’s typical customer comes in to browse at sofas and leaves with inspiration for their entire home.

Penman’s dedicated clientele sing praises on Yelp and demonstrate their support year after year through repeat business. “The whole staff is just so helpful,” says client Terry Roy, “they have my business for life.”

Come in to the new store at 23301 Avenida de la Carlota in Laguna Hills for Renaissance Home Furnishing’s Grand Opening Sale through the month of May and start the summer with a fresh new look for your family room, bedroom or home office.

Renaissance Home Furnishings has been my first and altogether favorite place to shop as a designer. Dennis is one of the most honest, hardworking men I’ve ever met. His integrity over the years has been the reason I will

continue to bring him business. Talk about first class service - the staff is like a family. The goal at Renaissance is to provide a warm, welcoming shopping

experience for beautiful furniture at fantastic prices...and believe me, they have more than succeeded!

QUESTION: What do I do if a bee stings me? —Amanda, San Clemente

ROSS MEDICAL: The stinger should be removed as soon as possible as more venom is injected through the detached stinger for a minute or two. One can use tweezers, forceps or even a credit card in a sweeping or brushing motion. If these are not available, the stinger should be removed as soon as possible with a pinch of the fingers. The sting results in an immediate sharp pain. The area should be treated with a cold compress or ice pack as soon as possible.

Antihistamine medications such as Benadryl, Zyrtec or Claritin can help reduce some of the swelling or subsequent itching. Some persons may have a more severe allergic reaction to some of the protein molecules in the bee’s venom. This could result in a whole body reaction such as swelling at the sting site or in the face and airway. Any sign of shortness of breath should be evaluated in the emergency room as soon as possible and is considered a serious emergency. Even an outbreak of hives can signal a possible on-coming “anaphylactic” reaction which may cause a closing of the airway, a racing heart and a drop in blood pressure causing fainting.

Persons with a suspected or confirmed history of a more severe reaction to bee stings should see their doctor for a prescription for an EpiPen. The EpiPen can deliver a potential life-saving dose of epinephrine to prevent serious symptoms until the patient can see a physician. —Andrew Klein, MD

A Mile For Maddie is a 1.2 mile fundraising walk benefitting The Maddie James Foundation. Taking place on Saturday, May 19th at 8 a.m. in Dana Point, the walk features a new trail along a scenic coastal bluff overlooking the future Maddie James Seaside Learning Center. Well-known, marine life artist Wyland is this year's event celebrity chair.

The Maddie James Foundation is a charitable organization committed to sup-porting ocean-minded educational programs for children of all backgrounds and the construction and ongoing operation of The Maddie James Seaside Learning Center. The Center is scheduled to break ground this year at the Ocean Institute in Dana Point Harbor.

The 2012 walk begins at the Strand parking lot (at the end of Selva Road, south of PCH in Dana Point). From there, walkers will progress along the bluff and wind down a trail toward Scenic Drive/Cove Road. The walk ends at the Ocean Institute where participants, family and friends are encouraged to enjoy an Open House Festival featuring refreshments, live music, crafts and self-guided tours through the Institute and the Pilgrim, a full size replica of an early nineteenth century three-mast schooner. A $10 entrance fee will apply for non-registered guests attending the Open House.

Register online by May 16th at www.amileformaddie.com. Participants will receive a Wyland designed t-shirt, an event medal and access to the Open House Festival. Registration is $20 for ages 3-12 and $30 for ages 13 and up. Please note that the course cannot accommodate strollers, ride-ons, wheelchairs or pets.

Please make a difference in your local community by supporting the efforts of The Maddie James Foundation. To learn more about The Foundation and to make a tax deductible donation, visit www.maddiejamesfoundation.org.

The 6th annual Dana Point Grand Prix of Cycling, presented by Amgen's Breakaway from Cancer®, is the largest and most prestigious single day criterium cycling race in the United States. The Grand Prix starts on sunday, May 6th at 7 a.m. in downtown Dana Point.

The Dana Point Grand Prix (DPGP) is a free, family-oriented event that promotes a healthy lifestyle and offers a unique professional sports experience while raising money for outstanding charities. Top professional and amateur athletes compete on a technical and challenging L-shaped race course set in the downtown area overlooking the spectacular Dana Point Harbor. Races start and finish on Pacific Coast Highway.

The Dana Point Community Cycling Foundation, a non-profit organization advocating bicycle-friendly communities and a healthy cycling lifestyle for youth and adults, organizes the DPGP and collaborates with local organizations like the Boys & Girls Club of Capistrano Valley, the Monarch Beach Sunrise Rotary, the U.S. Marine 5th Regiment Support Group and the City of Dana Point. Generating a large national following during the previous 5 successful editions, USA Cycling again rewarded the DPGP with National Criterium Calendar status and an invitation to be included among a prestigious series of 19 criterium races throughout the country including New York City, Boston, Los Angeles and St Louis.

If you’re unfamiliar with American criterium bicycle racing, think of it as NASCAR on bikes. Cyclists race on a tight downtown course where the action is right at street level. Spectators enjoy an up-close experience as riders fly by only inches apart from one another while jockeying for critical positioning. In addition to offering world class cycling, the DPGP showcases music, a beer garden on the finishing stretch, a Fan Zone Expo area on the race course and the popular Kids Zone. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department will also be on hand conducting a children's bicycle rodeo demonstrating proper methods for safe riding.

Amgen’s Breakaway from Cancer® is a national initiative to increase awareness of the important re-sources available to people af-fected by cancer. To learn more about this organization, visit www.breakawayfromcancer.com.
