To my crew, my homies, Carol and Coralee, yo dudes, where would I be without you both.

Carol, you’ve been helping me out since the beginning, we’ve had some great times and a giggle or two along the way, (not to mention the morning tea and nibbles to go along with all the hard work). Thanks for your typing, your dry sense of humour and your attention to detail.

Coralee, you’ve been helping for 3 years now and have certainly helped to take the pressure off.

My last and biggest thank you of all goes to the Committee of the Lilydale Online Access Centre. Their support has been wholehearted and unstinting since the beginning. Not only, allowing me to use some of my time as Coordinator of the centre to edit the Progressive, but also letting me use the facility and all its equipment outside of normal opening hours. Being able to use the centre computers, printers, paper, ink, fax machine, internet connection, web hosting service and space has certainly saved heaps of time and money over the years.

I know I’ve gained a lot and it’s been very educational for me over the last 9 years to learn all about Lilydale and it’s community. I’ve tried to be an impartial and positive editor of your local newsletter. Not so sure I’ve always succeeded, but hey, you can’t blame a girl for trying ;-)

30 years strong, The Progressive has been out and about in the district, from a simple 2 sided foolscap page in the early days to last month's bumper 24 page issue, we’ve come a long way.

Let’s hope it continues....

Editorial Recently I took the time to look over the past issues of the Progressive I’ve been involved with. I was a bit surprised when I started counting up the numbers and pondering on some of the 68 Editorials I’ve written over the years. Some were optimistic, some sad, some uplifting, some comical, some fairly well written, others not so. Admittedly I haven’t written every single one. Thankfully over the years we’ve had 34 terrific Editorials written by members of the community and on a couple of occasions by my stand in editor Carol Charlton.

So I thought you might be interested in some of the facts and figures of the past 9 years of the Progressive, since I took over from Frea Peschar as editor in September 2000.

We’ve produced 103 issues. With a total of 1646 pages.

On average each Progressive takes about 18 hours to put together (not just by me but with contributions by my stalwart typist, relief editor and fact checker Carol, and my proof reader, Coralee) so that’s around 1,854 hours of time or around 49 average full time working weeks.

Blimey I didn't realise we’d spent nearly an entire year out of the past 9 devoted purely to the Progressive ;-).

So I’d like to take this opportunity to thank those who’ve contributed by writing articles, informing the community about their group and its doings. Obviously a huge thank you to all those who’ve advertised over the years, without them there would be no Progressive, as printing costs have certainly increased during this time. Weedon Real Estate have been selling Lilydale and District properties for well over 20 years and know what the area has to offer to prospective purchasers. We have a local agent who lives and specialises in the district, so if you are thinking of selling or would just like to know what your property might be worth on to-days market why not call Tom Dancer on 0419 369 162 for a free no obligation appraisal. We are still receiving enquiries from prospective mainland buyers. If you are thinking of selling on a low key basis we have been successful in selling a number of quiet listings in the area. Weedon Real Estate can offer you low selling costs and exposure on 3 Internet sites. Contact our local agent to discuss any of your Real Estate matters.

Letter to the Editor and Community Members Individuals who are concerned about the closure of the Mary Walsh Centre need to reflect on why this has happened and understand the implications for keeping it going. If it had continued to operate with such small numbers there would have been questions to answer from the Government funded body. All of the board members were very clear about the moral and legal obligations they had to run the centre in the right and proper way. We tried to do this by bringing in another organization to assist with some of the administration work and to do assessments in the community to try to have more people sign up as attendees to the centre. However this was all in vain; after six months there was still no change. It was blatantly clear that the Centre was not meeting needs of people and that the service was no longer required by a significant enough number to warrant the continuation of the centre.

Suffice to say that we could not enter into an agreement with the funding provider because it would have been wrong to keep taking this under false pretences. We are sorry to say but sometimes there were as many staff present as there were clients, and clearly a situation like this is untenable.

This Board of Management had the courage to step up and to stand up and be counted; to say enough is enough, this is not right to keep operating in this way, and we did what was right and proper after much soul searching and endeavours to find other ways to promote the place.

But sadly the numbers were not increasing and the inevitable occurred, through no fault of any one of the board members, and to say otherwise is to fail to grasp the crux of the matter. Please ring me if you wish more information. Jennifer Smyth 6395 1542

Letter to the Editor: How sad! Yes, the closure of the Mary Walsh Centre is a blow.

However, the fact that it has gone on for so long, is testament to the dedication of many people in the Lilydale Community, who for many years have served both the Day Care Centre and subsequently the Mary Walsh Centre in an exemplary way.

I refer to the members of the Boards/Committees who have over approximately 20 years volunteered their time and resources to ensure that the service was viable in the eyes of the funding body. Who also ensured that funding was available to pay

the wages of the locals employed at the Centre. Who also ensured that funding was available to buy

equipment and items of comfort and convenience for clients of the Centre.

Who not only gave their time for meetings, doing the accounts, writing submissions, administration, computer training, assessments and all the other necessities that Committees cope with, but in many instances, also volunteered at the Centre to help the staff with morning teas, lunches, craft work, entertainment and outings. Donated vegetables, built equipment, worked on

extensions,

All activities above and beyond being a Committee member required, all as volunteers.

Anyone who thinks that the decision to close was not heart wrenching for those on the Board, did not see as I did two good friends who have served in this fashion for many, many years, devastated.

For many years, the Centre attracted much larger numbers of clients than has been the recent situation. Circumstances change, lives change, care requirements change, one thing that does not change is that the funding dollars have to be used for the greater good. It is not the Boards fault. How sad it all had to end on a sour note.

To the present and past members of the Boards/Committees, as one of you in the past, “I dips me lid to youse”, and know that the anguish that you are feeling will pass, and you will hopefully look back with pleasure and pride on a job well done.

Because, it was all of you that made it happen. Carol Charlton

Letter to the editor 24 October 2009 Residents and community groups from Mt Arthur, Lilydale, fear that a proposed new clearfell logging and plantation development front could compromise the town water supplies, put log trucks on residential roads, degrade their living environment and be visible from many part of the surrounding district.

Logging and plantation is proposed on an approximately 220 acre private block that immediately abuts Lilydale’s town water intake and includes critical areas of Rocky Creek and the water catchment for the supply. The land is in Launceston City Council’s Scenic Protection Zone and Water Catchment Protection Zone.

The proposal will see logging and plantations move into rural living areas on the north-west of Mt Arthur, only a kilometre from the edge of Lilydale village. Roads for log truck access are steep, narrow and have blind corners, causing fears for community safety. The roads also provide access to tourists wishing to visit Mt Arthur’s attractive summit walk.

Mt Arthur residents are urgently seeking to talk with the people proposing the operations but are also asking Launceston City Council and the Tasmanian

Neighbourhood Watch October Meeting 13 people attended this meeting including our

Local Policeman Terry Otis and Guest Speaker from The Tasmanian Fire Service.

Dave Cleaver from the Tasmanian Fire Service gave a very informative presentation on Community Fire Safety. Property owners and occupiers need to take some responsibility for the reduction of fire hazards on their properties. If you have any questions or require further information contact the local Fire Brigade who will be more than happy to advise you. The Fire Brigade is going to conduct another presentation similar to the one we had, and it is strongly recommended that people in the area that live on small acreage properties or properties that are near bush land, contact the Fire Brigade and get some information or attend their presentation.

Police Report Between the 13th and 15th of September 2009 unknown person(s) gained entry to a residence on Kempensers Road, Lilydale via a bathroom window. The house was being renovated and had a lot of new fixtures and furnishings. Around $17,000 worth of items was stolen. A 33 year old Blumont man was charged over the matter and all property has been located.

In last month’s police report, it was reported that between the 24th and the 27th of July nine six metre lengths of grey coloured guttering were removed from behind the Lilydale Football Clubrooms. A member of general public read this in “The Lilydale Progressive” and contacted the police with information that led to the recovery of the guttering which had in fact been delivered to the school by mistake.

Reports have been received from property owners in the Karoola area about people entering properties along the river in vehicles for the purpose of fishing. Permission should be sought from the property owner prior to entering the property.

Our local policeman has a zero tolerance on Drink Driving so expect to be pulled up in the coming months to undertake a Random Breath Test.

He is still getting reports about motorists exceeding the speed limit through areas with speed limits especially Lebrina. If this problem persists he will look at getting

Lions Club News The Lions have acquired a new distinctive red club shirt. Look out for us at activities around the town as we assist the community and those less fortunate around the world. In the past month the club has donated to quite a number of local and overseas causes, including our Samoan and Indonesian neighbours so devastated by natural disasters. Lions Clubs in those countries are assisting in the relief and rebuilding efforts with assistance from all over the world.

We have also assisted on the local front with donations to various Lilydale community groups and the School.

This is what Lions is all about. Did you know that the Tasmanian Lions and other service clubs managed to raise more money for the Victorian Bushfire appeal than any other state in Australia. Quite an achievement, given our small numbers. Some states have 3-4 times the number of clubs of Tasmania – but still we outdid them in generosity.

So if you have some spare hours and would like to put back into our community please contact us and become a member. You don’t have to make a large commitment – just do what you can.

Bus Trip and Afternoon Tea The Lions Annual Bus Trip will take place on Sunday 22 November. Leaving at 1200 sharp, we intend taking in the sights of Beaconsfield and Greens Beach (a slight change to the advertised route), with a highlight being a visit to the renewed Beaconsfield Mine Museum. The Lions Club will sponsor the admission to the Museum.

The trip is open to all our mature aged residents and invitations have been sent out to those that we know of. Unfortunately we do not have access to a definitive list of all people in the district ( for obvious privacy reasons) so if you are new to the district, or have not received an invitation, and would like to come along, please ring our Secretary, Barry Jones, on 6395 4233.

Traditionally this has been a great day out where acquaintances are renewed and new friends made. Get your name in quick before the bus fills.

Cow Manure We are ready to take your orders for the best growing media in the state. Please call Steve on 63951323 to order. We are willing to deliver to the local area.

Christmas Cakes It is getting towards that time of year again. The Lion’s world famous Christmas Cakes are now available through your friendly Lions member, or at our supportive outlets in the town. We will hold a cake run closer to Christmas but why wait – enjoy one now. They are still great value at $10 for a 1kg cake and $13 for a 1.5kg cake.

Lilydale Bowls Club Players and visitors have enjoyed great weather for the start of the season, after 19 prior wet weekends, and as can be expected, the green is still a little heavy!

The Ladies Division 3 team is breaking in new players and is yet to have an overall win. But with more commitment to training and as teams gain a little more experience, we are close.

The men have raced away to lead the ladder in both their promoted Division 2 Reserve teams and the new Division 5 team. This team is composed almost entirely of new members and is blitzing the opposition!

Our recent indoor bowls evening was well attended and all enjoyed the games and raising money towards our ever improving club facilities.

Our next social function will be a MELBOURNE CUP LUNCHEON / BARBEQUE. This will start at 12.00 noon FIRST TUESDAY IN NOVEMBER, with fun games and sweeps available, so, bring your bowls, a plate of food to share, and ladies, a CUP HAT please.

Expressions of interest to Graeme Campbell 6395 6248 or Jillian Weston 6395 1062. Members, social members, family and friends are welcome.

Jeff Weston gave an interesting talk on growing up in Lilydale, and we voted in new changes to our constitution.

Tasmanian Regional Arts (Lilydale Branch) It has been another busy month for Branch members with the Tile Design Workshop and the exhibition of work by the students of the J Weston Lilydale School of Art.

Both sessions of the tile workshop on 26 September were booked out and each participant decorated up to six tiles. These were subsequently kiln fired by Jenny and Ian Scott to produce a variety of amazing, colourful designs. The tiles have many uses, from wall and bench decoration to trivets and other intriguing gift ideas. Such was the popularity of the workshop that many on the day have already signed on for another workshop in 2010! Well done Jenny.

The same weekend saw some 140 people visit the Art Exhibition. Opened by Deputy Mayor Rosemary Armitage for the adults, and by the Hon. Sue Napier, MHA and Shadow Minister for the Arts for the younger artists, the exhibition showcased the fabulous array of talent we have in Lilydale. 10% of all sales was donated to TRA (Lilydale). Many of the younger artists realised that not only can art be fun, but it can also be a cool way of earning extra pocket money.

Most popular artist was Kim Booth, with Michelle Carpenter the runner-up. Votes for the popular choice of junior artist were evenly spread. A big thank you to Jillian Weston for providing the opportunity and curating the exhibition.

Include horses that are trained by a previous Melbourne Cup winning trainer. Include horses that are ridden by a previous Melbourne Cup winning jockey. Of course, the next best system is to pin all the horses names on the wall and throw a dart! Good luck with the big race.

Are You An Artist or Performer Looking for Support? Advice is received regularly by the Branch about various forms of assistance being offered to help persons involved in all forms of art, whether visual or performing. This assistance can take the form of grants, scholarships, exhibition opportunities, free publicity of exhibitions and performances, etc, and is offered by a wide range of organisations, including Government departments and instrumentalities, corporations, business entities and individuals, to name a few. Often, the Branch receives this information and, as it seemingly has no direct relevance to individual members, it languishes in our archives. Often the information conveyed is not reported in mainstream media and therefore does not come to the notice of the community at large. To redress this situation, the Branch is offering to make this information generally available by email to anyone in the local community who may be interested in receiving it. This will be a free service and does not entail membership of the local Branch. If you wish to receive this advice on a regular basis, please send your details to our Secretary, Brenda Bryce at [email protected].

FISH OIL In 1971, researchers studied Eskimos who consumed large amounts of fat from oily fish, but experienced low levels of heart disease. They established a link between heart health and omega-3 fatty acids contained in fish oil. Since then, omega-3 fatty acids have been extensively studied, and many international health organizations now recommend doses of omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) for the prevention of heart disease.

The two omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA are essential for our production of prostaglandins (hormones that control our immune and inflammation responses). Our bodies cannot make these two omega-3 fatty acids, so they have to come from food sources.

Omega-3 fatty acids obtained from fish meat contain EPA and DHA. The omega-3 fatty acids obtained from plant sources can only be converted to small amounts of EPA and DHA, so fish based omega-3s are the best ones to use.

There is now good evidence that the two omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) prevent the development of heart disease, including abnormal heart rhythms. In people who already have heart disease, they help prevent death, heart attack and stroke. They help prevent sudden death in people with heart failure; reduce high blood pressure; and are very effective at reducing triglycerides in the blood. They also assist in depression, bipolar disorder and some kidney problems.

EPA and DHA are important for the development of the eyes, and the parts of the brain that are used for learning, reasoning and memory. They also have anti-inflammatory activity and can help with conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, eczema, menstrual pain and dry eyes.

How much do we need to take? A 1000mg fish oil capsule contains 180mg EPA and 120mg DHA, which totals to 300mg of fish based omega-3s. It is the EPA and DHA that we need so check the label on the container.

People with existing heart disease should consume at least 3 fish oil capsules each day.

To prevent heart disease, you only need to take 2 fish oil capsules daily, or eat 3 fish meals per week. To reduce triglyceride levels in the blood, up to 13 fish oil capsules per day may be required.

For rheumatoid arthritis, 10 fish oil capsules per day for about 3 months are generally required before benefit is noticed.

Side effects. Fish oil can cause mild nausea, indigestion, fishy burps or loose bowel motions. Storage in the fridge; and taking

before a meal can reduce the fishy taste. A daily dose greater than 3 fish oil capsules a day can increase the chance of bleeding or bruising. High doses of fish oil capsules should be ceased one week before surgery. People allergic to fish could be allergic to fish oil supplements.

Lilydale Online Access Centre Status Report The Online Access Centre is delighted to announce that we have MOVED! The facility is now located in the ‘Community Learning Centre’ in the orange brick building (the old kindergarten) near the School car park. The School will use this building for course offerings to post grade 10 students.

The Lilydale District School has been exceptionally supportive towards us, in allowing us to share facilities in this superb re-furbished space. I wish to publicly express my gratitude to the Principal Greg Morgan and the Chief Executive Officer Helen Hale for their support of our Centre.

Recently we sent a letter requesting donations to several community groups and some businesses so that we could make the relocated Online Centre more comfortable and productive for patrons. It has become clear that community understanding of the Online Centre’s funding, structure and relationship with the School could be better.

The Online Centre is totally community managed. The Management Committee of 7 obtain State Government funding from the Education Department via the CKN (Community Knowledge Network); the body managing libraries and online centres. This annual grant is sufficient to cover the employment of our coordinator, Jayne Saddington, for approximately 12 hours per week. Around 7 years ago, when our funding was reduced, we decided that we could afford to employ Jayne for 16 hours per week, with the aid of fundraising.

The fundraising has occurred chiefly through the production of the Lilydale Calender, customer contributions, web page design and hosting, short courses and sales of photography. We have also used up the surplus funds remaining from the larger grants we received in the first 3 years.

The grant has also covered the lease of 5 computers from CKN until our re-location. We now lease part-time use of 9 computers from the school along with our new telephone line etc. The school has been incredibly helpful and very reasonable.

This year is the first time we have formally requested any financial support from the broader community. If

A Short History of My Involvement in Lilydale and Lebrina Commencing from 1967 By Joseph Murray Cocker

When I first arrived in the Lilydale area to live in Lebrina I was shocked to find so much neglect in the district and immediately decided to help improve the Lebrina Hall. Mr. Frank Bardenhagen cleared and

donated gravel around the hall for the parking of cars. I successfully applied for a war memorial grant which had not been taken up and also ran balls to raise money in order to have the previously unlined hall lined. Mr. J.W. Williams made the metal inscription plate LEBRINA MEMORIAL HALL and placed in on the new brick southern end wall. The work on this part of the hall was carried out with tremendous help to me from Mr. Graham Venn and the late Mr. Trevor Ellis. We held many successful balls at the hall enabling us to continue with improvements to the hall.

There was no street lighting in Lebrina and children had been hurt after getting off the school bus in the dark of winter. I had street lights installed so that the children could then be seen.

Lilydale was a dying village and in much need of help so then I turned my efforts into improving the situation. There was no sewerage system and septic tanks were no longer allowed to be installed, hence, there could be no new houses built and some existing buildings in the main street, such as the building currently used by the hairdresser, were banned from use. The future looked bleak so together with the late Mr. E.F.K (Tim) Denny and much help from Mr. Alf Kerkham and several others, a new Lilydale Progress Association was formed with the main objects being to get sewerage for the Village and to stop the Lilydale Council, controlled by the Warden, Dick Archer, from moving to Newnham. A public meeting was held and the Lilydale Hall was packed. Several people had been called in from Newnham to support the Council with their vote but the Council was defeated. Ultimately, we lost that fight through questionable actions made by the Council a few weeks later. The Council move to Newnham caused much unemployment in the district and we were also getting nowhere with the sewerage issue.

We held three successful balls in the Lilydale Memorial Hall to raise funds to keep fighting for progress. The Hall itself was supported by three grants of $500 from the Minister, Michael Barnard, plus other fund raising. I decided to start work on other things needed. There was not an hotel and with the backing of the late Mrs. Mal Bardenhagen we built a shower room and laundry room for visitors as an addition to the already existing toilets at the Falls Reserve. The Hydro Electric Commission erected a power pole with four power points without charge. This was used by campers for some time until it was removed. Unfortunately, the washing machine failed and has never been replaced by the Launceston City Council. This area was voluntarily maintained for many years by the late Mr. Bill Turner. To be continued next month….

MARSS PROJECT AT SCHOOL FARM Students participating in the MARSS project have worked hard to upgrade an “ugly area” at the school farm. We weeded all the overgrown grass, planted a row of Mellaleucas as a hedge and made two garden beds at the front.Slabs were boxed up ready for the concrete and then mixing the con-crete for the seat slabs was undertaken. Seats were made out of wood and steel, we welded the frames and bolted on the boards. We painted the seats and bolted them into place on the slabs. Rocks were put around the garden beds and filled with sand gravel.Seats were made out of wood and steel, we welded the frames and bolted on the boards.
