Do you have Digital TV?
If not you may be eligible for
Government Assistance to get digital TV
under the:
Household Assistance Scheme
(HAS) The Household Assistance
Scheme (HAS) was created to help
some Australians make the switch to
digital TV. It's designed to provide practical assistance to older Australians,
veterans and people with disabilities (or
their carers).
Am I eligible? You may be eligible for
the Household Assistance Scheme (HAS) if you:
own a working TV
haven't converted to digital TV
receive the maximum rate of one of
these payments:
Age Pension
Disability Support Pension
Carer Payment
Department of Veterans' Affairs
Service Pension
Department of Veterans' Affairs
Income Support Supplement.
How do I apply?
If you are potentially eligible for the
HAS, you will have received a letter
from the Department of Human Services inviting you to apply.
The letter invited you to call the
Department of Human Services on 1800
556 443 to confirm your eligibility. The
HAS is already available in Tasmania and applications for the scheme will close on
9th May 2013.
We strongly encourage you to apply as
soon as you receive your letter so you can enjoy the benefits of digital TV
before switchover. If you wait until close
to the switchover date, it may not be
possible to schedule your appointment
before switchover.
Lilydale R & SLA
Anzac Day Service
A big thank you to the people
of Lilydale that attended the Dawn Service and the 11am Service for
ANZAC Day.
Especial ly the
school students, our Padre and all
the Lilydale Fire
Brigade, also the
members of the
RSL who helped in setting up, and
meals, I won’t
name everyone
you know who I’m referring to.
We had a great turnout for the Dawn
Service, and the weather was kind.
The 11am Service was held in the
Memorial Hall due to the weather having decided to turn bad.
The reports I received were that people
felt that it would be better to hold the
11am Service there all the time as
people could hear and see better.
Please let me know how you feel.
At the going down of the sun and in the
morning, we will remember them.

David and Tom are still planning another Mystery Bus
Trip but with daylight saving finished it will now we
scheduled for later in the year.
The Lilydale Silent Policeman has come out of hiding and is in the care of the LDPA. Younger members of
the district are probably wondering what we are talking
about, ask your parents or grandparents they should
know.

This year we are wearing new guernseys (and they look fantastic), as our PREMIERSHIP TEAM of 2012 kept the
winning ones.
Our club would like to thank our generous sponsors of
2013:
Launceston Mitsubishi Motors, Lilydale Larder,
Inveresk Tavern, Launceston Linen Service,
Artec, R&S Rosier Construction Pty Ltd, Lily-
dale Hardware, Wraggs Supermarket,
Sunrise Bakery, Tas. Driveline, TFA Logging,
Mullins Bodyworks, Jax Quickfix Tyres, Harvey
Norman.
Please support these businesses and we always
welcome new sponsors on board to help keep our
great footy club kicking along.
Keep up the good work our footy volunteers, there’s
not too many of our locals rolling up their sleeve and
having a go giving up their precious time, but the small
committee are bloody thankful you do.
One of our young footy legends GREG NUTTING played his 250th game for Lilydale.
*Congratulations to you Greg.*
Lilydale Active Fitness Group
Our session on Tuesday evening is going as normal
from 7 pm to 8 pm.
Only Saturday session has finished now.
Cost $ 7 for the hour.
We know it is harder to get out in
winter, but we hope to see you all as
usual.
Cheers to all from the Fitness Group.
Lilydale Progress Association Inc
Attendance at the April meeting was one of the lowest
we have had for a while.
Catherine spoke about the recent successful Festival of
Wood. Indications at this stage are that it may become a bi-annual event. From the general discussion on this
topic Simon has been elected as the Lilydale Progress
Association events co-ordinator.
Peter spoke about the success of the Village Market
and it is possible that it may run through winter at an under cover venue. More about this in the June issue of
the Progressive.
Lilydale Activity Space is still an issue to be resolved,
two new members of the LDPA in Karen and Tori are
interested in being on the steering committee.
The water committee has had a couple of meetings to
finalise the ‘Love Lilydale Water’ project and things are
coming together. If you feel as passionate as the five
LDPA WC committee members are, then we will need your support for us to proceed with our action. An
information brochure will be circulated in the district
with interesting data about the quality of water we
should have (local) and the water we may be forced to
have (pipeline). It is believed there are options open to the residents of Lilydale to have their own choice.
Simon spoke briefly about the Village Green, if you are
interested in keeping the area clean and tidy Council
volunteer forms are available.
David spoke about the Neighbourhood Watch and
with Government cutbacks we have lost our local
Policeman.
Still no finalisation of the Falls Reserve proposed
changes.
Peter spoke regarding David Cleavers project of
Neighbourhood early response groups.
The Community Kitchen and the War Memorial
Lighting projects are currently being investigated.
The burden of regulations for Community events is being followed up by Mike and he will communicate
with the Launceston City Council regarding this matter.
The move by the Upper Piper Crafts group into the
Court House from the old Library area was discussed. There had been no formal request of the LDPA so the
legalities will have to be sorted out with the LCC.
Once again we put out an invitation to older and newer
members of our community, we welcome you to join
us on Tuesday evening at 7.30pm at the Old Library (Court House - 1951 Main Road, Lilydale). I know it is
not easy to leave your cosy homes on the now colder
nights but we can assure you we have a warm meeting
room. If you are new to the area why not become part of the community, we will listen to your ideas and
concerns.

Neighbourhood Watch
April Meeting
Ten people attended this meeting, including Constable
Gavin Storay, it was very pleasing to Gavin at the
meeting.
Police Report
Constable Gavin Storay reported that on the 15th
February 2013 a Mobile Phone was stolen from the
Lilydale Swimming Pool, two youths have been charged
over this incident.
With the end of daylight saving, police would like to
remind vehicle owners to check the roadworthiness of
vehicles. Make sure lights and indicators are working,
and as autumn turns to winter, check the condition of
tyres and brakes. It is the responsibility of the registered owner of a vehicle to make sure that their
vehicle is roadworthy.
Tasmania Police would like to remind the members of
the public to secure their businesses, vehicles and properties. There has been a recent spike in burglaries
of businesses (mainly entries). Offenders have targeted
cash left on premises. If you are a business owner,
please do not leave the daily takings at your business.
Even though this is a low crime area, vigilance is the key. If you see or hear something suspicious call police
on 131444 and report it.
If the matter is urgent, and requires immediate
assistance, Triple 000 should be used.
Next Meeting: The next meeting of the Lilydale
Neighbourhood Watch will be held 09th May 2013 at
7.30pm at the Lilydale Fire Station. Our guest speaker
will be Peter Gutwein
Come along and meet our Group we are always looking for more members.
Remember everyone is welcome to attend. Hope to
see you there.
Types of Fraud: General Tips to keep scammers at
arm’s length.
PROTECT YOUR IDENTITY: Your personal
details are private and invaluable – keep them that way
and away from scammers.
DON’T RESPOND: Ignore suspicious emails, letters, phone calls or text messages – press ‘delete’, throw
them out or just hang up.
DON’T LET SCAMMERS PUSH YOUR
BUTTONS: Scammers will play on your emotions to
get what they want.
RESIST THE PERSONAL TOUCH: Watch out
for scammers posing as someone that you know and
trust, or pretending to know you.
Don’t let scammers into your life – protect your identity.
Identity Theft: Some offenders target your mailbox
to obtain personal details about you. In this way your
identity can be fraudulently used by these offenders
who could apply for loans and finance without you knowing.
What can you do? Five steps to reduce identity theft
1. Shred all unneeded documents.
2. Search your car and remove any personal docu-ments
3. Secure your mail in a lockable letterbox.
4. Separate unnecessary cards and ID from your wal-
let.
5. Speak to someone if you suspect ID Fraud.
These steps are recommended by the Tas Registry of
Births, Deaths and Marriages. To find out more, visit
their website. www.bdm.tas.gov.au
It is very important to shred your discarded mail (especially your financial details) prior to putting it in
the bin and always be aware if your mailbox has been
tampered with. If you didn’t receive a statement or a
bill be sure to advise your bank or bill issuer.
Remember
There are no get-rich-quick-schemes.
Do not share account or credit card details or
personal identity information with anyone unless
you can verify their identity.
If your gut reaction is it doesn’t feel right then Stop,
Think and Reflect on why you’ve been asked to send
money.
If it looks too good to be true – it probably is!
Upper Piper Arts & Crafts Co-op
Old meets new.
Old and new meet in the Old Lilydale Court Room as
the Co-op has settled into the historic ambience of the court house room. Change has also attracted many
new members and their work to mix with the favourite
crafts of our original members.
With colder weather arriving why not save time and
money and shop in our shop, avoiding the annoying trip to the city whilst supporting your local community.
There are bargain and quality gifts for everyone, with
mother’s day, birthdays and baby showers all catered
for in our one stop shop.
If you want to be a new member please drop in and
talk to an older member (or young) and become active
this winter.

numerous new riders of which many where non pony club riders. Feedback was positive with riders

and Lucy.

such as Ball and Cone, Bending, Wizards Castle and
Stick Pegging race.
On Saturday 11 May Pony Club is holding its annual

New Members: Well, we managed to induct one of
our two new members this month. Welcome to the
club to Lion Heather Petersen, from Bangor. It is
wonderful to see a new face and someone who is committed to helping the Lilydale community.
Markets: Lions are looking to be at the final two
markets for the summer season. Hope you all come
along and support the town. It’s been great to see all the activity in town over the past few months.
Don’t forget too Moo Poo is still available. Call Steve
on 6395 1323. Only $5 a big bag.
Lilydale Village Market
The market has had a tremendous month. Customer
numbers and stall holder satisfaction has stayed high
even through the April seasonal changes. We've had oodles of locals bring down local produce for sale,
regular live entertainment, yet another feature in the
Examiner, as well as the regular stalls selling a wide
range of goods, new and second hand, the vast majority sourced locally.
Our Easter market ran the traditional Lilydale Egg
painting competition, with our winners featured in the
Examiner. The under 18 winner was the lovely Helena
from Launceston, and in the over 18 category the winners were locals Natalie, Gardie and Dee (any
connection of these ladies to the Market is of course
completely coincidental!).
The Lions rolled out a multimedia recruiting stand last market to raise awareness of this valuable local
organisation.
Many, including Phil Lohrey, Paul Alting and the LVM
committee, have been posting dozens of photos and
videos to our facebook and youtube pages. We've also celebrated a milestone, with over 200 facebook friends!
We're now gunning for 300, so please visit our page
and press the button!
The bar has expanded its range, now selling local honey
and the Progress Association's 150 years of Lilydale DVDs. Our new featured beer on tap is Rabbit Trap
Kolsch, a light German style ale brewed locally, a
Tamar Beer Festival award winner, offered in addition
to honey beer and mead, and local wines.
There are two markets left in the current season,
Sunday 28th April and Sunday 12th May. We're
currently looking at options for the winter season,
maybe a monthly market in the Memorial Hall.
Stay up to date with all our goings on by subscribing to our facebook page and youtube channel, checking out
our website, www.lilydalevillagemarket.com, or come
down and set up a stall with your produce or goods by
emailing us at [email protected] or call Natalie on 0418 688 250. The Lilydale Village Market is
community owned and run by the Lilydale District
Progress Association Inc.
Country Women’s Assoc -
Lilydale
I need to start with an explanation - did you understand the Easter riddle in the last issue? Well,
I didn’t write it egg-sactly how it should have been.
This is the correct version. Question - How can you
tell where the Easter Bunny has been? Answer - Eggs (X) marks the spot.
May 1st will be our Annual meeting as well as the
monthly meeting. These will be held in the Uniting
Church Hall, commencing 9:45am. Nominations for the
office bearers have been called - and now is the time to those doing all the ‘heavy work’ over the last year.
Without them, no Country Women’s Association, no
chance to meet, enjoy fellowship, and do ‘great’ deeds.
Shared lunch will follow.
The northwest groups is organising State Exhibition this
year, a wonderful showcase of all our creative activities.
It will be held this year at Latrobe in the Memorial Hall,
27th & 28th July. A state-wide craft day will be held at
Perth on 29th May where various workshops have been organised. In conjunction with this, Bridestowe
are sponsoring a competition using lavender - in a jam
or preserve, baking, and a craft article.
Lilydale Branch has been around 74 years. To celebrate
members went along to the ‘Lost Farm’ golf course restaurant near Bridport. . What a magical day,
weather beautiful after a cold start, not a cloud in the
sky, the sea all shades of blue, all viewed through a wall
of glass… and ‘wows’ from us. Brilliant, plus good meal, special company as a bonus. On the way home we
detoured into ‘Barnbougle Dunes’ golf course for
coffee.
CWA Sunday is 5th May with an 11:15am service at
Uniting Church, Lilydale, shared lunch afterwards.
Cheers for now.
Lilydale Lions Club
Lions Youth of the Year: The Lilydale
Lions Club hosted the NE Tasmanian final of
the Lions Youth of the Year competition. Five very
impressive young members of our community impressed the judges. The winner will go on to
compete against the Southern and North Western
finalists, for the honour of representing the state in the
national competition. The club was commended for
its hosting of the finals, so well done the President Lion Helen, and Regional Chair, Lion Amanda.
Teddy Bears’ Picnic: In last month’s Progressive, I
promised to report on the Teddy bears Picnic.
Unfortunately it had to be postponed due to inclement weather. We are very sorry, and are planning to
attempt to hold it in September. So keep your eyes
peeled for information and keep Teddy warm over
winter (if he isn’t hibernating).

Influenza or flu?
Influenza, or flu, is a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. There are three
main types of influenza virus that cause infection in
humans - types A, B and C - and many sub-types or
strains. Influenza can occur throughout the year but
influenza activity usually peaks in winter.
Influenza is a vaccine-preventable illness but a new
vaccine needs to be given each year because influenza
viruses change constantly. A new influenza vaccine is
prepared each year to best match the strains predicted
for the next influenza season.
What are the symptoms?
People with influenza typically experience some or all
of the following symptoms:
fever and chills
cough, sore throat and runny or stuffy nose
muscle aches, joint pains, headaches and fatigue (feeling very tired)
nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea (more common in
children than adults)
Some symptoms may last for more than a week. Some people may also experience very mild symptoms,
particularly if they have some immunity from a previous
infection or vaccination.
Seek immediate medical advice if the illness quickly
becomes worse or if any of the following occurs:
shortness of breath or rapid breathing
chest pain
confusion or sudden dizziness
persistent vomiting
How is it spread?
Influenza viruses are mainly spread by droplets made when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Influenza
can also be spread through touching surfaces where
infected droplets have landed.
People with influenza can be infectious from the day before their symptoms start. Adults are most infectious
in the first 3-5 days of their illness, while children
remain infectious for 7-10 days, and people with
weakened immune systems may be infectious for
longer.
Who is at risk?
While anyone can get influenza, the following people
are at higher risk of complications from influenza
infection (and are eligible for free annual influenza
vaccine):
All individuals aged 65 years or older
All Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander peoples
aged 15 years or older
Pregnant women
Individuals aged 6 months and over with medical
conditions predisposing to severe influenza, namely:
Heart disease.
Chronic respiratory conditions, including
severe asthma
Other chronic illnesses requiring regular
medical follow up or hospitalisation in the
previous year, including diabetes
Impaired immunity
For people who don’t fall into any of the ‘free
immunisation’ categories, and wish to have a flu
immunisation, you will need to get a prescription from
your doctor, which will cost about $15 at the pharmacy.
Take action to stop the spread of influenza by
remembering to:
Cover your face when you cough or sneeze and throw used tissues in a rubbish bin. Try to cough
into your elbow and not your hand
Wash your hands thoroughly and often. Wash hands
for at least 10 seconds, especially after coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose, or use an
alcohol-based hand rub
Stay at home until you're well. Wait at least 24
hours after your fever resolves so you that you are unlikely to infect other people. Keep sick children
away from school and other activities
Call ahead to see a doctor. If you think you may
have influenza and you need to see a doctor, call first so the clinic can take precautions to reduce the
risk to other people

What a wonderful Easter we had weather wise. I would
like to thank everybody that bought tickets in our
Easter raffle, we had a terrific response.
Our winners were:
1st - E Weston
2nd - Jeff Sims
3rd - V Chick
Our club is gradually getting smaller and smaller, we
would like to see some new faces. We are open
1.30pm to 4.30pm on Fridays so come along and have a cuppa.
I will only write in the Progressive every 2 months as
we will not be having any carnivals this year. With
much disappointment the Tamar Valley has been closed as there wasn’t any person willing to take on the
Secretary or Treasurer’s role, as Gladys has done it for
the past 6 or 7 years. A big thank you goes out to
Gladys for the work and time she has put into the
Tamar Valley.
As there isn’t any more news I wish everybody good
bowling until June.

Festival of Wood
Art Students from Prep/1 Years 4/5, 7/8 and 9/10 were involved in creating works for
the Festival of Wood. They were fortunate to work with artist Ritchie Ares Dona who developed folded book technique to make a Tree of Knowledge. The tree is
now located in the school Community Library.
Posts were also created: Winning Post, Spot the Post, Post it notes Post, Finger Post,
Postage Post, Post it and Post er.
Students also created a large canvas depicting Lilydale township; and some ideas on
imagery for the Festival working with local artist Paula Crook.
Two recycled characters, Lily and Dale were
also created. An amazing productive input by the Art Department – well done and thank you
to all students, staff and artists who contributed.

Lilydale Swimming Carnivals 2013
In March we held both our Year 3-6 and Year 7-10 swimming carnival at the Lilydale Pool. Well done to all of our students who participated and braved the cold water for their houses! Thank you to our SCR
for cooking the BBQ and to the Senior House Captains for assisting with various duties. Thanks to all of our parents and other family members who came and supported our swimmers. Thank you to all staff
involved on these days for your hard work.
Both Carnivals ran very smoothly with nice weather. It was great to see our students enjoying
themselves, especially with the fun novelty events.
