November 19th

We said farewell to one of our long term residents, (it is nice to see her coming out to some of the Senior Citizens functions) and welcomed a new resident, who has settled in now and is a welcome addition to ‘The Units’. A couple of our residents have not enjoyed good health this year and we wish them all the best.

On Sunday 13th December we will be having our Christmas Lunch under the carport as usual.

Just enough room for me to thank the hard working volunteer Board. Frea Pe-schar (Secretary), Maureen Poke (Treasurer), Mike Armes and Bryan Saddington (gardens and maintenance) Julie Livingston (Welfare) and Eunice Fi-nan (Tenants Representative). Thank you all for your hard work on behalf of the Units Board.

We would also like to thank all who support the Units and particularly those who show consideration to our Residents.

Happy Christmas and good health in 2010

Carol Charlton President

Lilydale Fitness Group Our last fitness day will be on the 8th December 7-8pm as normal.

We will resume training on the 19th of January 2010, in the same place and time.

We’d like to wish all our members a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Just because it’s a holiday don’t slacken off your exercising, you’ll need to work off the Christmas pud!

Looking forward to seeing you all again next year.

Editorial Christmas is just around the corner and another year is almost over. It’s been a busy and fulfilling one for me, I’ve had visitors from interstate and overseas. Old friends and relatives, a chance to catch up and show them just a little part of our beautiful state. Whilst I won’t be able to be with them over the Christmas holidays I know we’ll be thinking of each other.

It’s funny but it’s this time of the year when thoughts start turning to the past and other special times we’ve had together. Thanks to all those who’ve contributed to the Progressive this year, and in particular to Carol & Coralee for all their help. I wish you and yours a memorable Christmas and a Safe and Happy New Year, and hope to speak with you all again in 2010.

Lions Club News As this is the last Progressive of the year it is timely to thank the businesses, people and groups who have supported the club this

year. Particular appreciation must go to Bardenhagen Hardware/Liberty Lilydale, Gorgeous Gifts and Bardenhagen’s Supermarket whose support for the club continues to be unstintingly generous whenever required. Lions certainly support the “Buy Local” campaign and would encourage others to do likewise wherever possible. The Lilydale Fire Brigade have also assisted us whenever asked and they are a real asset to the town, not just in their fire fighting capacity, but as a dedicated group of community volunteers willing to take on just about any job, and support any cause. Also to the people of Lilydale, who support us in our endeavours to support the community. It would always be nice to have more members, but our band of 14 gets out and about and does what it can.

With the closing of the Mary Walsh Centre the club is currently homeless. That’s not stopping us getting on with business though. We are meeting at various localities around the district. We are planning a combined dinner meeting at the Lilydale Falls with the Launceston and Kings Meadows Lions Clubs in January, a visit to the Door of Hope for a trivia night in February and a visit to the St Giles Society in March. The Club is a Life Member of the St Giles Society and provides them with whatever support we can.

Tasmania Day: Thanks to all the families that came out to help celebrate Tasmania Day on Nov 8. A great Day was had by all. The egg and spoon, sack and three legged races were keenly contested. The Fire Brigade provided a wonderful pool, which the kids loved on what was a very hot day. With free sausages and a free merry go round, there may have been a few queasy stomachs near the end. The face painting and stalls were all popular. Also, a big thanks to all those groups, stallholders and individuals who supported the event.

The highlight of the races had to be the Tug of War contests. The Lilydale Lady Lions team (assisted by Humphrey B Bear) took on all comers. They managed to beat the Fire Brigade (best 2 out of 3) and a team of Lilydale’s finest young gentlemen. Beware the Lady Lions. Better beef up for next year fellas.

Christmas Cakes After a false start last month the Lions Christmas Cakes have been installed in local outlets. At $10 for a 1kg cake and $13 for a 1.5kg cake, they are great value, and the quality is assured.

They are also available from club members. We will be conducting our cake drive in the early evening of Friday 4th Dec in the Lilydale township so please keep an eye

open for us when we come knocking. Santa will also make an appearance to receive the children’s Christmas requests.

Remember the proceeds from cake sales go towards Lions Australia’s projects worldwide.

Bus Trip By the time of publication the club’s Senior Citizens Bus Trip will have visited Beaconsfield and Greens Beach. I am sure they will have had a great time.

Neighbourhood Watch Report

13 people attended this meeting including our Local Policeman Terry Otis and his assistant Jnr. Constable Brittany Williams and our Guest Speaker.

Khan Dick from Roberts Real Estate gave a very informative talk on the book he is writing called “Echoes of Stone” about the 40th battalion, all Tasmanians who fought for their country. Sounds like good reading so watch out for this one.

Police Report On the 8th of October 2009 between 10am and 12 pm a spray unit was stolen from outside the boundary fence of a property on Golconda Road. This item was quite large and would have required two or three individuals to lift it.

Constable Otis also mentioned that during the month that people had graffitied the bridge in Main Road Lilydale. The offenders were caught.

A local person was arrested for failing to pay for Petrol at a Newnham service station.

Remember if you lose your wallet or purse report the cards lost as soon as possible, don’t carry large sums of cash and check at the local Police Station and local Businesses to see if it has been handed in.

Last month it was reported that police were still receiving complaints about motorists not observing the speed limit through Lebrina; this resulted in over 100 motorists booked over a two day period.

In the coming months there will be police from outside the area checking on speeding and conducting Random Breath Tests around the area.

Next Meeting The next meeting will be held at the Fire Station on the 14th of January 2010 commencing at 8pm. This will be the last report for 2009 and everyone associated with the Lilydale Neighbourhood Watch wish every one in the community a very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.

Hope to see you in the New Year. Remember everyone is welcome to attend. Hope to see you there.

Tasmanian Regional Arts (Lilydale Branch) The past four weeks has again been busy for the Branch with members being involved in the Kite-Making Workshop and Family Kite-Flying Day, and Rural Youth Health Week.

Over 100 people, either making and flying kites, or just coming along to watch the colourful aerial display, enjoyed the Kite Day activities. While the wind did drop off as the afternoon progressed, there was enough action to satisfy all.

Our thanks to the Branch volunteers who helped make the day the success it was. Many who attended have asked if we are going to do it again next year; so we must have done something right!

Thanks also go to Margaret Brockett and Peter Blockey for representing the TRA at the recent Rural Youth Health Week activities at the Lilydale District School. They were able to introduce the students to the rules and strategies of Gate Ball, a game not unlike croquet. Everyone enjoyed the challenges of this new experience. Thanks also to Ian Scott for organising the loan of the Gate Ball equipment from Tas Croquet in Hobart.

Christmas Pantomime – 12th December After a sojourn of several years, the Lilydale Players are reforming to present the Christmas pantomime ‘The Three Little Pigs’. The pantomime will be held in the Community Hall on Saturday 12 December 2009, commencing at 2.00pm. Children’s Christmas Carols will follow the performance and there will be a surprise visitor.

This will be a great afternoon of fun for all the family, so put the date in your dairy now and bring the kids along.

TRA Raffle To help raise funds for its activities the Branch is running an End of Year Raffle to be drawn on 30 December 2009. A $1.00 ticket (or 3 for $2.00) will put you in the draw for one of the many valuable prizes (totalling in excess of $700) donated by local businesses. Please support your local TRA Branch with its ongoing activities and buy a ticket.

Are you an Artist or Performer looking for support? As mentioned in last month’s Progressive, advice is received regularly by the Branch about various forms of assistance being offered to help persons involved in all forms of art, whether visual or performing. This assistance can take the form of grants, scholarships, exhibition opportunities, free publicity of exhibitions and performances, etc, and is offered by a wide range of organisations, including Government departments and instrumentalities, corporations, business entities and individuals, to name a few.

SPECIALISING IN ALL YOUR HAIRCARE NEEDS Please Note: Lilydale Hair will be closed for Christmas from Dec 23rd to Jan 4th

To redress this situation, the Branch is offering to make this information generally available by email to anyone in the local community who may be interested in receiving it. This will be a free service and does not entail membership of the local Branch. If you wish to receive this advice on a regular basis, please send your details to our Secretary, Brenda Bryce at: [email protected]

Season’s Greetings Members of the Branch take this opportunity to wish the Lilydale community every happiness for the coming festive season.

Next Meeting of the Branch will be held at 75 Lalla Road Lilydale at 7.30pm. on Tuesday 15 December 2009. The meeting will be followed by ‘seasonal’ refreshments. For more information please contact Brenda Bryce on 6395 1290 or Ian Williams on 6395 1062.

Lilydale Bowls Club Report All is progressing well for the club, with practice sessions well attended, particularly by players in Men's teams, and it is evident that practice pays off on the game day!

The Melbourne Cup Luncheon could have enjoyed greater patronage and the weather was against us, but as the skies cleared in the afternoon we managed to roll a few down and those present had an enjoyable day. The winners in the betting competition were KP Booth, Kathy Hawes, Ian Williams and Rex McKercher and amazingly, no-one picked the last place getter. Next year we will go "Chicken and Champagne" and advertise earlier and more widely.

During this time our sympathies have been with Jan Mahnken, our Ladies President, who has had a spell in hospital with a back injury. Jan is on the mend now and hopes to rejoin us on the green soon.

The Div 2 Reserve team have been doing very well despite their step up and are well placed on their ladder. The new Div 5 team is doing really well and at the time of writing are 2nd on their ladder. The Ladies Div 3 is having a struggle, but have finally started to gel and have just posted their 1st win of the season. Onwards and Upwards, (my old school motto).

The club will be selling raffle tickets for a BUMPER XMAS HAMPER, so please support your local bowlers and stay tuned for more social functions in the New Year.

The President and Management Committee of the Lilydale Bowls Club Inc wish all residents a safe and happy Festive Season!

Senior Citizens After quite a busy year 2009 is coming to an end. It’s been fulfilling and fun. We had our first carnival in April in the Memorial Hall with our second in August and our third early November.

Thanks must go to Doreen and Jeff for the work they put into the club with all the other helpers THANK YOU all.

We have three Tamar Valley games each year between Lilydale George Town and Beaconsfield which Glenys looks after.

Lilydale played in the pennants on Wednesday evenings from April to July. We went quite well in first division winning 5 games.

Clubs birthing was held July with valley voices singing some old favourites and our life member Hazel cutting the birthday cake.

We lost one of our members this year who was a great help to the club.

A big thankyou to David for taking us on our annual bus tour up to Mathinna for a barbecue down through Scottsdale and then home. We had an enjoyable day.

Christmas luncheon will be held on 15th Dec at Bridport hotel.

I do wish everybody a happy festive season a prosperous new year with family and friends. See you all in 2010 R East

Lilydale Pony Club Our annual summer camp will be held at the West Tamar Pony Club grounds from Jan 4th to 6th. We will join with Launceston Pony Club, so it should be both educational and social.

We will have a Christmas pool party in December for all our adult and non-adult club members and their families to get together for a chin-wag.

JUNIOR: Daddy, there's a man at the circus who jumps on a horse's back, slips underneath his belly, catches hold of its tail and finishes on the horse's neck! FATHER: That's nothing. I did all that the first time I rode a horse!

Yoga and Meditation Will restart in February 2010

Ed: I must take this opportunity to apologise to the CWA for not putting their notes in last months issue. No excuse just didn’t see them! So here’s last months notes and December’s notes as well. Enjoy!

CWA Notes - November Two members of Lilydale branch were recent delegates at the CWA State Conference at Grindelwald and informed us of resolutions passed and discussions held there. Two interesting speakers were Mr. James from Hearing Australia and Brendon McMahon from the Northern Weather Bureau.

State President, Shirley Morrisby was re-elected for 2010, our congratulations Shirley. The State CWA fund raiser for next year is Doctors without Borders and country of study is, Wales.

CWA members subscriptions will rise to $33 and the CWA News and Views will not be published bi-monthly and sent to members. It is encouraging to note that state-wide $4000 was donated to the Fred Hollows fund, out State fundraiser for 2009.

Our CWA members are sewing and knitting articles for sale at the CWA shop in St. John Street, Launceston – drop in sometime and check out the numerous cards, knitted goods, baby clothes, sewing, jams and jellies, sauces and relishes, home baked cakes and biscuits, etc.

The Lilydale High School has invited us to help at their Grade 9-10 Expo on the 12th November and we will again donate awards for two students on Awards Night in December.

We welcome two new members to our Branch over the past weeks and value their input to our meetings.

CWA Notes - December In November our members had the monthly meeting in the Old Courtroom and it was brief and business like which for busy people this is sometimes a necessity. Two members attended the School for their Health Promotion week events. They assisted some grade 9 and 10 students with the making of a craft item with a Xmas theme. The girls (and a boy) were involved in hand sewing to stitch a door knob hanging for Xmas while at the same time having to master new techniques like threading a needle, holding a sewing needle and stitching two pieces of fabric together that were cut in the shape of a heart. They also eagerly looked at items of other craft and Xmas decorations brought in for the students to see examples of beautiful hand work by our members. CWA members were very pleased to be involved in giving students the opportunity to try these new activities.

On November 25 several of us travelled to Georgetown for the Xmas and birthday celebrations of that Branch and no doubt will have had a great luncheon and day out!.

Our final activity for 2009 will be a wonderful trip to the North East, where we plan to stop at Derby and explore the art gallery, museums and coffee shops before arriving at Branxholm for a lovely lunch and day out in a relaxed and happy get together. There is usually much merry mirth and photo shots as well as gift sharing and eating of lunch and delicious sweets.

We take a little time to nourish ourselves and reward ourselves for the work and energy put into serving our community in the way that CWA does best.

Until next year please drive carefully, prepare your residences for bushfire threat and be kind and gentle with one another. With special wishes to all in our community from the members of your local CWA Branch in Lilydale.

Golf (Now that’s new!) A little birdie (pardon the pun), has just told us that JOE EAST has recently become the C Grade Tasmanian State Champion.

Well done Joe.

Seniors’ outing turns out to be quite an adventure! We left Lilydale on a beautiful spring day for a bus trip to somewhere off the beaten track - Mathinna. Most of us at some stage had been up that way and our memories of the township reflected its isolation, very old cottages and its reputation.

After picking up people at various places we were delayed by the “bikies” who had come to tour our state, but we enjoyed watching the spectacle of all the bikes with their headlights on coming towards us.

Then we headed off down the Midland and Esk Highways to Fingal and everyone was surprised at how green the countryside was after the dry conditions of recent times.

A delicious barbecue lunch was waiting for us at the Mathinna Club prepared by some hard working locals and we spent an hour chatting to them about the ‘old timers’ and the mining boom. We then set off for home via Ringarooma but someone (don’t think he was a local) suggested we make a small detour to view the “Big Tree”.

Our capable bus driver, David, agreed and off we went along this narrow gravel road through the forest. Suddenly, after coming round a corner a hug log across the road blocked the way. On the other side of the log we could see the site with a barbecue area and facilities beside a stream with beautiful manferns.

At that stage all we could think of was the coach had travelled quite a distance from Mathinna, no buildings along the way so the coach had to be turned round somehow. The ladies left the men to sort out that problem and climbed over the big log to take photos and have a wander round the picturesque area.

The sound of the engine caught our attention and we hurried back to watch David chugging backwards and forwards from the bush on one side to the bush on the other with very little road to work with. His years of experience helped though he did have a few brawny men alongside to give him plenty of advice.

Then on to Ringarooma with spectacular scenery and rugged mountains in the distance.

A lovely day, so well organised by Jeff and Doreen. Where will we go next time?

Ham Hints: Information taken from: www.foodauthority.nsw.gov.au Christmas hams will keep for several weeks with proper handling.

Reduced salt hams will not last as long as conventional hams so it's important to follow the instruc-tions on the packaging. • The leg of ham needs to be stored in the refrigerator in a

special ham bag or a clean cotton pillowcase. The ham bag or pillowcase needs to be changed or washed and dried every 3 days

• 5°C or below is the temperature the fridge needs to be to stop bacteria growing. Putting more than usual in a fridge can push up its temperature. Blocking cold air vents and more frequent opening and closing of the door can also raise the temperature.

• Things like soft drinks can be safely kept cold in an ice-filled sink or esky.

• Don't allow any raw food such as other meats to touch the ham.

• Wash hands thoroughly before handling the ham, especially after nose blowing or going to the toilet.

• Avoid preparing food if sick with something like a cold, diarrhoea or nausea.

• Take extra care with hygiene if there are pets in the kitchen.

• Make sure to use separate cutting boards, knives and other kitchenware to prepare the ham.

• Use clean sponges and tea towels; dry wooden kitchenware in the sun if possible.

• Slice off the amount that's needed and keep the whole ham in the fridge.

• Ham needs to be eaten within 2 hours or put back in the fridge.

• Leftover sliced ham can be kept in the fridge for up to 2 days if wrapped in plastic or foil

• Sliced meat can also be put back under the skin flap of the ham and stored in the ham bag or cotton pillowcase

• It’s also possible to freeze leftover ham slices

Entertain children with fun activities-i.e.: face painting, pony riding, jumping castle… creative workshops i.e: jewellery, kite making ... origami... Wanted colourful character for costume ie-Father Christmas; Easter Bunny; Clown. Can anyone blow up balloons? ...

Please remember... • Keep it cold • Keep it clean • Keep it hot • ...and check the label A Short History of my Involvement in Lilydale and Lebrina commencing from 1967 By Joseph Murray Cocker

Continuing on from last month…

Through approaches to the State Government, I had improvements made to the road between Lilydale and Launceston and Lilydale and Scottsdale after which I turned my efforts again to obtaining sewerage. At this time I was elected a member of the Lilydale Council and I learned that the Minister for Education was considering spending thirty thousand dollars on sewerage for the Lilydale District High School. This seemed a waste to me as I felt this could be added to a larger scheme to sewer the whole village. This was successful with help from the late Michael Barnard, Minister for Lands and Works and Local Government. As a result, Lilydale has become a viable village with a Medical Centre, Chemist, Veterinary Surgery, Hotel and nearly all services required for people not to have to go to Launceston.

Rocky Creek flooded one year and water came into two of the shops on the creek side of the main road. I phoned the Minister for Local Government and he said that the government would pay for the creek to be cleaned and that in his opinion it was an emergency. He also told the late EFK Denny, who was also a member of the Lilydale Council and Rural Warden, to go ahead and have the creek cleaned immediately. We ordered a contractor who agreed to do the work at a very reasonable cost, however, the Council intervened and said that it was not an emergency and unfortunately ordered another contractor to do less than the first contractor would have done. This caused continuing problems for several years.

The object then was to get many other much needed things done, such as: sealing of the verges of the main street and footpaths, a public toilet, homes for the aged and a Day Care Centre for the aged, all of which was achieved with the hard work of many. To name a few, being the late Mrs. Mal Bardenhagen, after whom the Retirement Units have been named ‘Marion Court’, Mrs. Chris Grose and Mr. Kim Patterson. The Newnham Rotary Club, of which I was a member, gave six thousand dollars toward the building of the first four Homes for the Aged and assisted with planning. Mr. Frank Bardenhagen donated the land, valued at the time at five thousand dollars, on which the homes have now been built. The State Government matched the value of the land with a dollar for dollar grant and with monies which had also been raised by the community, the building was completed. Plans had been made to ultimately have twelve units on the block, but with changes made to building regulations this was no longer possible, hence the limit to eight units now built.

The plan for a Day Care Centre for the Aged in the area was taken up by the Community Health nurse, Sister Carol Cowley, who sought funds from the newly available Federal/State Governments funding scheme, Home and Community Care, formed to assist people to remain in their own homes. Once again the Newnham Rotary Club assisted with a donation of two thousand dollars and labour for many weekends over several months to alter and build on to the old community health centre and dental clinic building. The Launceston City Council, through the late Mayor John Lees, also donated funds which allowed for the completion of the work. The Centre, latterly known as the Mary Walsh Centre, provided twenty one years of service to the community.

It is indeed pleasing to see so much progress in the Village and various committees and people continuing with present and future projects. The Lilydale district once had a thriving fruit growing industry and some suitable new industry would be a great benefit to the area.

Are your legs restless? Have you ever had what seems to be an uncontrollable urge to move your legs – a feeling that is often accompanied by uncomfortable or unpleasant sensations in the legs? If that’s the case you’re probably among the almost 10% of Australians who suffer with what is known as “Restless Legs Syndrome” or RLS. For perhaps 2% of the population, RLS causes discomfort and distress.

RLS is not new. Back in the 17th century, Sir Thomas Willis, a British anatomist, identified the symptoms and recorded that his patients benefited from treatment with opium.

RLS is often misdiagnosed and poorly treated. Yet RLS can have a significant, adverse impact on quality of life, causing disturbed sleep and the feeling of fatigue and lack of concentration during the day.

Of course there are a number of conditions that can cause sleep disturbance and daytime drowsiness; and indeed RLS itself can occur anywhere at any time, but almost always with RLS, the urge to move your legs and the unpleasant sensations are worse in the evening or at night.

Also, if they do occur in the day, the uncomfortable and unpleasant sensations begin to worsen during periods of rest or inactivity. It seems the only thing to relieve the symptoms is to move around – walking and stretching. Not so easy if you’re sitting down at work, relaxing at the movies or travelling in a car or plane.

For some people there is no known cause, and therefore no cure. For others, the cause could be iron deficiency, varicose veins, or thyroid problems.

There are some other simple and practical strategies which might assist: hot or cold baths – or alternate hot and cold packs. Massage, or just gentle stretching exercises might also help.

When travelling, plan ahead. If you’re in a car, make frequent stops to refresh yourself and avoid becoming sleepy. In a plane where frequent stops may not be so convenient, keep your mind active. Try reading an exciting novel, play video games or do a crossword. Organise a doctor’s letter to request an aisle seat for more leg room.

There are substances that appear to make RLS worse. The main irritant is alcohol, so just a moderate intake is recommended. Caffeine in all its forms (coffee, tea and cola drinks) and nicotine, especially near bed time, also seem to aggravate RLS.

As far as treatments go, opium is no longer used (however, certain other pain relievers can help). Fortunately there are now more effective medications. Some mild sedatives may give relief, but can also cause daytime drowsiness and confusion. Some anticonvulsant medicines, primarily used for the treatment of epilepsy, have been shown to improve RLS symptoms in some people.

The most effective medicines are similar to those used to treat Parkinson’s disease. Recently the first medication specifically approved for the treatment of RLS has become available in Australia.

Lilydale Online Access Centre Lilydale Online held a very successful open day on November 8th, coinciding with the Lilydale Lion’s Picnic Race day. The Centre had many visitors, who came to see our new facilities. Positive comments were made by all, particularly the fact that our new location has AIR CONDITIONING on what proved to be a tremendously hot day.

Along with a tour of the new space we were promoting our current fundraising activities which include:

Falls Farm Recipes Revisited cookbooks for only $10 a copy, if you’ve been in the district a while you may remember I ran a tearoom opposite the Lilydale Falls for over 6 years. In that time we had some great functions and over the years I gathered a lot of lovely simple recipes, well now you can have your own copy of these and other great dishes. We have limited stocks of these so come on in and check them out.

Lens on Lilydale Card Packs: 5 beautiful photo cards of various scenes in the district. We have 4 different packs, scenic, panoramic, floral and sepia. These make great gifts at $10 per pack.

Funds raised from the sale of these items will help us purchase new equipment for the centre. A huge thank you to an anonymous local benefactor who donated

LILYDALE DISTRICT SCHOOL SNIPPETS

After months of careful planning at both ends of our continent the Homelands Art Camp kicked off last Tuesday in glorious spring sunshine. The vista from Bayview Cabins was magnificent; the sparkling water at Bridport provided the perfect backdrop to the art-action happening around our Camp…and what action it was! Once a basketball appeared, twenty Lilydale kids quickly made friends with the 22 indigenous kids and adults from Maningrida, which is 450kms east of Darwin in Arnhem Land. There have been innumerable highlights for our visitors: eating pizza, traveling over hills (their country is dead flat), seeing unfamiliar animals such as sheep and cattle, wearing shoes, walking on carpet, washing in running water, fresh fruit..the list is almost endless. For our mob the experience was simply amazing: communicating and making firm friends with non English-speaking peers, learning traditional dancing, teaching their new friends how to do clay work and carve lino, and exploring the Bridport foreshore with them. We learned so much about cultural rules and traditions, imagery and languages. We also learned about our own indigenous Cape Barren Island people. The Bridport Girl Guides ladies provided us with fantastic food, which was enjoyed and appreciated by all.

Our artists treated the whole group to the experience of a lifetime. Stuart Hoyt and Fiona Maher, proud Palawa woman from Cape Barren Island, showed the kids how to throw pots. Stuart also built and fired a raku kiln, ably assisted by his tight team of local lads. Ross Byers built clay objects with everybody at the camp and kept us all entertained, Ross-style! His partner Amy, a Scots girl and knitted-graffiti artist, delighted us all by teaching EVERBODY how to knit. The Maningrida women showed our girls how to weave. Gary, an elder and custodian of many languages, songs and images, demonstrated and shared his painting techniques. Mat Carey, Sam Butler and Liam James (The Imagery Wizards) worked on a DVD which, when ready, will provide a unique memoir of the Camp experience. I co-coordinated the drawings and carvings for a large lino-print, 750mm X 1800mm, worked on by every person at the camp. It was such an honor to have the elders record their own images, and then to tie all the images together in a design which included our own crows (wak-wak), grasshoppers, bird nests and frogs. We then took the lino block in to the Art School at Inveresk and printed it with our own well-known printmaker, Dallas Richardson. Laura Mitchell volunteered her time to assist Dallas with the setting up and printing of the work. This experience was just wonderful for all the Camp participants and is one I will never forget. One print will travel all the way to Maningrida to be hung in the school there, which will be a moment of great pride for the elders and for the children.

On the Friday the Camp was concluded back at our school. Camp participants plus 90 specially selected students from Grades 1-10 were treated to a series of hip-hop dance lessons with four incredible teachers from The Funk Factory. It was fantastic to see all the kids and adults participating with so much joy and energy!

Highlights? There are so many that I could never list all of them. For me, seeing the best kids in the world have such a fun, relaxed, positive, amazing and unique educational experience; Jack Venn being ochred-up by Keinan, an elder, in preparation for the dance; pulling the first print and seeing the facial expressions of the elders and of our kids at the magnificence of it; meeting and sharing with local Tasmanian aboriginals, particularly Ronnie Summers (proud Palawa man) who honored us with his songs, wisdom and humor; the magnificent Bridport bay and weather.

Finally, we had many, many sponsors and I would especially like to thank our local contributors in this publication: the Avent family, Lilydale Baptist Fellowship, Lilydale Neighborhood Watch, Lilydale Lions Club, Lilydale District School Parents and Friends, Bardenhagens, Olson Eggs and the Uniting Church. Your kindness and generosity meant that we were able to give our local kids the experience of a lifetime. Thank you. Kerry Lamb Art teacher, School Chaplain and Homelands Art Camp Convenor.

IMPORTANT NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL LIBRARY Parents are asked to ensure that all school library items are returned by the 7th December. Since the Education Department changed library software in the September holidays we have not been able to run our usual overdue reports. It will save us considerable time if parents ensure that school books come back. Kindergarten to Grade 4 students will not be borrowing books in their library lessons in December; however State Library members will be able to continue to borrow at other times. It would also be good practice to make sure that all State Library items have been returned or renewed prior to the close of the school year to avoid fines being charged. Students who are members of the State Library will be able to borrow as usual in the Community Library opening hours and access the library during the summer.

ABC CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE Our school is again supporting the ABC Christmas Giving Tree appeal. A tree will be placed in the library where families may donate a gift for a child which will then be passed onto the ABC and distributed to chil-dren in need. We would appreciate any donations and ask that a tag be placed on the gift stating whether it would be suitable for a boy or girl and the appropriate age group. Monetary donations can also be made and these can be left at the school office. The ABC Giving Tree Ride will be 14th December at approximately 10.30am to collect our generous donations. Please help us support this worthwhile appeal by leaving your donation at the school by Friday 10th December.

My number one (apart from spending 4 days with our beautiful Lilydale kids) was being presented with the didgeridoo, which Gary made and painted especially for the Camp. I was so surprised and honored; I have decided that I will give it to our school where it will take pride of place in our new music facility and be played whenever we have a (male only!) didgeridoo-player visit us.

I'm On a Committee

Oh give me your pity! I'm on a committee,

Which means that from morning to night We attend and amend

And contend and defend, Without a conclusion in sight.

We confer and concur, We defer and demur,

And reiterate all of our thoughts. We revise the agenda

With frequent addenda And consider a load of reports.

We compose and propose. We suppose and oppose.

And the points of procedure are fun. But though various notions Are brought up as motions,

There's terribly little gets done.

We resolve and absolve, But we never dissolve,

Since it’s out of the question for us, To bring our committee

To end like this ditty Which stops with a period...thus.
