Trips and outings to a wide variety of locations have always been popular, and recently we have been inviting members of the public to join Clients at the Centre for Dining With Friends.

Since its beginnings 21 years ago the Centre has been funded by HACC (Home and Community Care)

Sadly all these things have come to an end with the closure of the Mary Walsh Centre effective from Thursday August 20th, 2009 due to low Client numbers.

The Board of Management feel we can no longer continue to accept funding which can be more effectively used by other HACC funded services.

This decision has not been an easy one by any means, the Staff and Board have tried for many months to boost Client numbers but despite our best efforts this has not happened.

Also the amount of paperwork and accountability is increasing all the time and as the Board are all volunteers we feel the task of administration is more than we are prepared to accept for so few Clients.

On a personal level I have enjoyed my time spent working with the other Board members and thank them for their friendship and support.

My thanks also to the Clients and Staff I have come to know over the years and I wish you all well for the future.

Helen Chick, Hon Secretary, Mary Walsh Centre Inc. Board of Management. Editor: Sad to see a community service closing down. However I’m sure the money saved will be put to good use in other deserving communities. All the best to all involved.

Demise of a Community Centre July 1988 saw the opening of the Lilydale Day Care Centre on the corner of Main Rd and Lalla Rd.

This building was originally designed and built in the 1940’s to accommodate the Lilydale Bush Nurse. When the building opened in 1948 our much loved Sister Mary Walsh was the one who lived and worked there.

In the years following Sister Walsh’s retirement in 1974 the building was used by a variety of Health service providers, and at various times housed the Community Nurse, the Baby Health Clinic, a Doctor’s surgery, a Dental surgery and the Lilydale annexe of the Launceston General Hospital to name just some.

In the 1980’s a group of far sighted people saw the need for a day relief centre to keep our older residents out of Nursing homes and in their own homes for as long as possible, so the Lilydale Day Care Centre became a reality.

July 2002 saw a small change when the Lilydale Day Care Centre became known as The Mary Walsh Centre Inc. At this time we also had a change of Board and my thanks goes to the original Board who worked so hard to get the Centre up and running.

Since the Centre’s opening it has operated Tuesdays and Thursdays with Clients enjoying crafts, games and many other activities.

Over the years Community Transport has provided buses to pick Clients up from their homes and to return them home at the end of the day.

Thank you Much Appreciate the Chance Closure of Day Centre: The members of the Board of the Mary Walsh Centre deeply regret that they had to make the decision to close. The Centre has been a vibrant and vital part of our community for the past 21 years but in the last few years it has really wound down. To the stage now that we could not warrant the expenditure of government funding that was received. To all those who have attended and those who have given service and goods and time and friendship to the Centre we say many, many thanks, it has been very worthwhile. But now the life cycle is over and we trust that in the future some other service or another venture that will bring people together and provide nourishment for families and for all who need friendship, support and social interaction will possibly arise.

Take heart that it has been a wonderful part of this our Lilydale, and again thanks to the dedicated Board members who served voluntarily for all those meetings and work behind the scenes. Thankyou to those involved over the years and to the present staff for their years of selfless and dedicated service, none could have done more than these "friends" of the Mary Walsh Centre.

I hope that we can stay united and supportive of each other in our efforts to bring quality and comfort to those around us.

Yours truly, Jennifer Smyth. Chairperson, Board of Management. Mary Walsh Centre. 18/08/2009.

Letter to the Editor Dear Editor, It is with regret that I write this letter on behalf of the Board of Management of the Mary Walsh Centre Inc.(Day Care Centre). After serving the Lilydale community for 21 years and after being set up by the many caring local community members during those early times it has been our sad duty to have to close the facility.

Over the last few years our client numbers diminished to the stage that the Centre was no longer viable. The Board has spent the last twelve months having many meetings to look at all the options of keeping the Centre open without being able to find a solution. Disappointingly, we have quite a number of people within the district who were eligible for our services but unfortunately they did not want to take up what we offered. This has led us to having to close the Centre and in turn make all of our dedicated staff redundant.

Many thanks go to all the people who supported the Mary Walsh Centre over the years and like ourselves we

are sure they will be as disappointed as we were in having to make our decision.

Tom Dancer Treasurer On behalf of Mary Walsh Centre Inc. Board of Management.

Mary Walsh Centre News By the time you read this the Mary Walsh Centre will be closed after 21 years of operation.

I would like to convey my thanks to current members of staff, as well as former staff, for their dedicated service to the centre during the 13 years I have been Co-ordinator. It has been my pleasure to share this work with you and I am proud of our combined efforts to provide a professional service, with a very human face, for our older community members. A special thanks to Heather, who has shared her musical talents with us on a regular basis as well as Bob, the bus driver, for service beyond the call of duty.

Let me also acknowledge the community members, over 40 in total, I've had the pleasure of serving during this time. Many of these people, are sadly, no longer with us, but my life has been enriched by knowing you.

I value the stories you shared over the years, the shared experiences, the love and the laughter. It has been a great privilege for me to work in a meaningful job in the small community in which I live. Finally, I wish to acknowledge the hard work of successive Boards of Management who have worked behind the scenes to govern the Centre and meet statutory requirements. Few would realise what an increasingly onerous and demanding task this is. Darian (Dee) Alford

Lions Club of Lilydale The club is coming out of its winter slumber as we race towards our Christmas Cakes sales. But the club members haven’t been

idle. The Club has assisted young and mature members of the Lilydale community in recent months. A number of our younger citizens are off representing the state on the mainland in various competitions, and the club has been happy to assist them in their endeavours. All we ask is that when they come back, they come and tell us how it all went.

We have also had occasion to assist some mature, less mobile members of our community with tasks that may be difficult for them. We are more than happy to help where we can as we are a community focussed club. Speaking of the mature citizens of Lilydale, the annual Lions Big Bus Trip and Lunch for our Senior Citizens is on again on Sunday 22nd November. Details on the itinerary are still being finalised, but mark your diaries. It’s a great day out and we would love to have you along.

One of our own long time members is feeling a bit poorly. Wallaby Bob Tynan is unwell at the moment and all the members wish him a speedy recovery and return to the fold.

The August dinner meeting was honoured with the presence of the new Tasmanian Lions District Governor, Dr John Gilham. The DG was fulsome in his praise of Tasmanian Lions, but also of Lilydale Lions in particular. Given our small numbers, we do tend to get up to a surprising number of activities and support many worthy causes. Besides those mentioned above, in recent months donations have been made to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal, Prostate Cancer Research, Drug Awareness Programs, St Giles, Cystic Fibrosis and Parkinson's Research. But our main focus as stated above is community based and the DG praised this work. He put forward the point that in these difficult times organisations such as Lions may be able to assist those that fall through the Government "cracks".

We are also working on an activity in November in conjunction with the State Government's "Celebrate Tasmania Day". We hope to be able to provide more details in the next edition of the Progressive, so keep your eyes pealed.

Lastly, don’t forget spring is just around the corner and we have a new delivery of our pulverised and dried cow manure available for the vegie garden. Give Stephen a call on 6395 1232 to place your orders. Still only $5 for a large bag (about 25kg). Great value. Deliveries can be arranged and all proceeds go back into your community

Lilydale Pony Club It's been a very wet time for horse riding. As the Karoola grounds are still too wet we will have our September rally at West Tamar again. Saturday September 13th is the next rally date.

We had our August rally at West Tamar and this proved to be quite entertaining. There was a very large puddle of water, which was quite appealing to some of the smaller ponies, as they tried to roll - and we did have some wet children for a while. Our older riders tended to hoon through the water - and became wet that way. Our presentation evening will be Friday September 18th at Karoola 7pm - pizzas and pony games (without ponies)

Adult Riding WHEN: 20th September, 2009 TIME: 10 am sharp WHERE: Karoola Football Ground Pipers River Road, Karoola (PLEASE SEE NOTE BELOW) COST: $40.00 (Yearly Membership/Affiliation with Pony Club Association of Tas $20.00 per ride (to cover instructors, ground hire etc) PLEASE NOTE: due to weather and ground conditions we may not be able to use the Football ground. We will have a back up plan in place, so it would be advisable to ring and book your space early, so you can be advised of the change of venue if needed. Also yearly membership will need to be paid before the ride.

For enquiries and bookings, please contact: Jayne Blyth - 6395 4380 or 0419 844 520

CWA Notes Just a few lines from the members of CWA. There may not be a lot to report but I just want to say that the Lilydale Branch of CWA is really quite active and is a valuable member of the group of Branches in North Tas. We had our monthly meeting on August 5th where roll call was something for the Dutch Auction. We decided that for the coming 12 months we would like to raise funds for some really worthwhile causes, these are “Water for All” and “Women Feed the World”. Got you interested? Well we can give more info on these projects as time rolls on.

Some members have made saleable articles for sale in the CWA shop in Launceston and this also helps raise funds for our various causes.

Our special End of Financial Year Market that was held in the Lilydale Hall at the end of June raised $767 which is well worthwhile and thankyou to all the stall-holders and sellers of raffle tickets and to everyone who pitched in to make this a very good day. We hope you had success selling your wares and to the buyers who found “just the thing” thankyou for coming along. Markets are great but the people who come to purchase are vital to the success of the venture; so please remember to come along and buy up again next year!

We held a Soup and Sandwich Luncheon with a Dutch Auction to follow. This was attended by about 50 or so members from all around the regions. It was a great chance to catch up with friends and to have a lovely social time. The soups were delicious and there were some request for seconds. The Dutch Auction was a real hoot, especially when the last item raised over $24 and all up a sizeable sum was raised for “Drought Relief”. Now we’ve had a lot of rain and the drought has been relieved in many areas but there are still those who need to recover from the serious effects of the prolonged drought and this money will be forwarded through our State office as needed.

Next meeting 9.45 for 10am on September 2nd. Lunch to Share being a plate of your fancy. Any interested lady will be made most welcome, come along and support a local service organization, we welcome visitors at any meeting; the first Wednesday of the month.

Lilydale Football Club With the NEFU finals under way, we hope to see all three Lilydale teams playing at Scottsdale

on Grand Final Day, Saturday September 12th. After finishing on top of the Seniors and Under 16’s ladders and second on the Reserves ladder we have earned the right for the double chance of having a red hot crack at the 2009 Grand Final flags. To go straight into the grand final we need to win the 2nd semi final played at Scottsdale on August 29th. If any of our teams lose we get the second chance and play the winner of the 1st semi final in the Preliminary Final on September

Every team in the competition apart from the Scottsdale Crows has a chance at one of the flags this year and the teams are so close on points after round 19 that every one of them has a real opportunity to take home the flag and enjoy one of the best experiences in their lives. Let’s hope Lilydale Demons have the very best experience.

Congratulations to our very own Thane Bardenhagen on an awesome year of football and at only 17 years of age has won the NEFU Seniors Best and Fairest. Matt Zurbo came equal 3rd in the reserves and Mark Walsh was 4th in the Under 16’s. Not a bad effort at all.

Tasmanian Regional Arts (Lilydale) While August was a quiet month for community involvement, Branch members have been busy preparing for the forthcoming Tile Design workshop, and a Kite Workshop and Family Kite Flying Day in Oc-tober. Work is also in hand for a Christmas pantomime to be performed by Branch members on Saturday, 12 December.

As foreshadowed last month, the ‘Hook Rug’ group is now meeting on a regular basis (2nd Tuesday and Friday of each month). Anyone in the community can be involved. The get-togethers are not restricted to rug makers and any craft is welcome, providing it can be done in a group environment. What a great opportunity to meet socially with like-minded craftspeople while enjoying your art.

Call Dee Alford on 6395 1561 for details about venue, times, etc.

Ceramic Tile Design Workshop – does your kitchen or bathroom need sprucing up - a new splash back perhaps, or some colour to spice up existing bathroom décor - or perhaps make handy pot stands or even a personalised Xmas gift for that special person? Then come along to our next workshop on Saturday 26th September and let your creative minds run wild.

Another Letter to the Editor I was impressed by Jayne’s editorial in August’s Progressive and marvelled that she stretched the story about Jack Jumpers to two columns.

While collecting some ‘keep well pills’, Helen challenged me to submit an article of similar merit.

I had a story in fact about a possum who via a chimney, entered my bedroom. After a dummy run, succeeded in trapping him or her in one of Lorraine’s traps and in the early hours of one morning despatched him to a wooded area on North Lilydale Road. So that was that!

Later thought it would be more appropriate in this age of the ‘green revolution’, to sound out the citizens of Lilydale and surrounds, about what they feel about two important matters which have a distinct bearing on our pockets.

Firstly creation of energy! Can it be better sourced by nuclear power plants, now readily available the world over, but not in Australia?

Secondly, who does one believe about global warming – Al Gore and others or those scientists who claim that “climate change’ is a natural occurring phenomenon and not the result of man-made gaseous emissions?

Sincerely hope that these questions will result in debate which enhances the local communities’ knowledge on the subjects.

Lilydale District Progress Association President’s Report from Alderman Annette Waddle Member April 1988-August 2009 President 7/9/2004-4/8/2009

This is my last President’s report and will be read by Deputy President Jeff Sims.

I will not be renominating and will not join as a member. It’s all finished.

I can do without the tenseness of “what’s coming next” at these Progress meetings.

I am carer to John (my husband of 48 years). He needs me more.

Our meetings have changed from being quiet and friendly to being very hectic, changes everywhere that aren’t always needed or wanted.

One thing that hurts was not wanting Aldermen as members (although you allowed me to remain).

Page 11: THE LILYDALE PROGRESSIVEThe Lilydale Progressive - September 2009 Page 3 are sure they will be as disappointed as we were in having to make our decision. Tom Dancer Treasurer On behalf

Aldermen Beams and Aldermen Dean were questioned on their motives. Generally they came to help and always voted with me on Lilydale concerns (and just by the way, Alderman Beams’ wife, Ronsely’s maiden name is Sulzberger and her family is a Lilydale family).

Now getting all that off my chest, we had a Special Meeting (26/5/09) about changes to boundaries, times, membership rules.

Taping of meetings Swings at the Falls Flag poles Ducks in the creek Fence at the Fire Brigade Lilydale Forum (11/5/09) Lice at the Pool

The plus of Launceston City Council buying the Lilydale Bowls Club land for $77,000 (with a hell of a push from me) and if there’s a bit of extra cash in Launceston City Council budget, buying a couple more blocks for the Bowls Club.

Funding of $200,000 for the Recreation Ground Hall which has to be finished by September 2009 (well on the way).

Our Guest Speakers: Alderman Graeme Beams on UTRIA and the

dredging and silt Alderman Ivan Dean Geoff Brayford on the new water and

sewerage bodies. Margy Dockray (I was absent but seems a

very interesting talk) Paul Stevenson, Conservation Volunteers

Australia. You had 2 community concerts.

At our Council Meeting on 27/7/09 (much to my disgust) the tip fees at Lilydale and Nunamara are going up:

Your car/wagon from $1.00 to $3.00 Your ute from $2.00 to $5.00 Tandem trailer $4.00 to $10.00

Nunamara which I held for as long as I could from zero to the same as Lilydale.

And always interesting are our group reports. Enough said.

Thank you for your friendship over the last 20 years. See you around Launceston. Annette

Lilydale Football Club 40 year Reunion From the Examiner 16-9-1969 Police Stop Footy Brawl: Three police officers went on the Rocherlea football oval to break up a savage brawl in the East Tamar Grand Final between Lilydale and Hillwood.

They stepped in after a boundary umpire who had tried to stop the fight was picked up over a player’s head and thrown in the mud.

The wild melee started about 15 minutes into the third quarter and lasted about seven minutes.

A Lilydale player who had taken a mark on the half forward flank was knocked to the ground.

Then it started. First two or three players rushed in and seconds later about 30 players were slogging it out. The fight was so wild that central umpire R. Lewis could not make any reports.

Had he reported one player he would have had to report at least another 20.

During the fight several spectators rushed on the ground but they were knocked down and left the field dazed and covered in mud.

The three umpires were pushed and shoved as the fight went on. When it appeared that umpire Lewis had broken it up the fight flared again and police stepped in.

They lined the teams up and told the players that they were on the ground to play football and if they continued to fight they would have to call the game off.

While the police were talking to the players, Mr. J. Thirkell, president of the Umpire’s Board called the umpires aside and held a short discussion.

Ten minutes after the Lilydale player had taken the mark, he was awarded his kick and the game went on.

The three-quarter time spell settled most of the players and there was little trouble in the last quarter.

No players were reported and no one was seriously injured. One player lost several teeth.

Lilydale went on to win the game and its first premiership in 13 years.

Lilydale/Karoola Red Cross Branch The branch held its Annual General Meeting recently, members celebrating 14 years of friendship, fund raising for Red Cross and Meals on Wheels deliveries to the local community.

Office Bearers were re-elected unopposed for the 2009/2010 financial year.

Our branch meetings are held on the last Wednesday of each month, at the home of one or other of the members. Meetings are informal and friendly, commencing at 11.30 am and concluding with a shared luncheon.

We are very interested in welcoming new members to the Branch. If you are new to the Lilydale district and would like to make some friends in your new community, or perhaps you have just learned that there is a Red Cross branch locally and are prepared to give a few hours of your time each month to support a very worthy cause, we would be very pleased to see you.

The Meals on Wheels delivery service operates every Thursday with a roster of volunteers who deliver the frozen meals to residents around our area. It is quite a pleasant duty – not at all onerous – simply pick up the meals, deliver to the client’s home, a little bit of paper work, return the eskies and you’re done. Two volunteers each Thursday are required – so the more people we have on roster the better. Drivers and off-siders are always needed.

Please consider this very worth while activity.

Stroke. Only heart attack kills more people than stroke. Stroke kills more women than breast cancer. About 88% of stroke survivors live at home and most have a disability. 20% of all strokes occur to people under 55 years old.

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is disrupted. This can occur when a blood vessel is blocked or broken.

A small blood clot or cholesterol plaque can cause a blockage. A blocked blood vessel prevents the blood from getting to the cells on the other side. These cells will die if blood is not restored quickly. If the brain cells which control speech die, then our ability to speak will be lost.

A broken blood vessel results in the blood leaking out of the vessel; and so the blood doesn’t get to the cells on the other side of the break.

A TIA is like a ‘mini-stroke’ and a blood vessel may become blocked or broken for a short period of time. The body repairs itself quickly enough so that the brain cells don’t die (just become temporarily sick) and they recover fully.

The signs of both stroke and TIA may be any one, or combination of the following: Weakness or numbness or paralysis of the face,

arm or leg. Can the person smile? Has their mouth or eye drooped? Can the person raise both arms? Difficulty speaking or understanding Dizziness, loss of balance or an unexplained fall Loss of vision, sudden blurred or decreased vision

in one or both eyes Headache, can be severe and of abrupt onset; or a

change in the pattern of normal headaches Difficulty swallowing

Stroke is always a medical emergency. If you experience any of these symptoms yourself or recognise them in someone else, call 000 even if the symptoms last for only a short time.

The main risk factors for stroke are smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, AF (atrial fibrillation – or irregular heart beat) and other heart and blood vessel disorders.

High blood pressure is the single most important risk factor to control. Medication to control blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke by 40%.

Aspirin for people in the high-risk category can reduce stroke by one third. Aspirin does not offer any benefit for low risk individuals.

People with AF often need to take warfarin. This can reduce the risk of stroke by up to 70%.

Your risk status for stroke and heart attack can be calculated from charts produced by the National Heart Foundation of Australia.

The risk calculator charts take into consideration age, gender, diabetes, cholesterol, blood pressure and smoking when determining your risk status. All adults over the age of 60 who have diabetes are high risk. Male smokers aged over 55 are also high risk.

Lilydale Online Access Centre Lilydale Online Inc We will be holding our AGM at 7.30pm on Tuesday 15th September in the Lilydale Community Library. Come along and hear all about our year and our plans for the future. All welcome

We’re On The Move with a new home and a new number!!! For many years the Lilydale Online Access Centre has explored various schemes to move to larger premises. Now, with thanks entirely to the Lilydale District School we are on the move.

With the completion of the refurbishment of the old Resource Room (also previously known as the kindergarten to our older residents, and the brick building right next to the carpark for those who don’t know what I’m talking about) the new Lilydale Community Learning Centre will also house the Lilydale Online Access Centre. At this stage our opening hours will remain the same, however this may change to suit our clients needs in the future.

This beautiful new space will house 8 computers (allowing us to run courses for larger numbers much more comfortably). We’ll also have access to a photocopier, laser printer, toilet & kitchen facilities, and our very own office in addition to our existing equipment for printing and scanning photographs, laminating and book binding.

To ensure the move goes smoothly the Centre will be closed for the 1st week of the School Holidays starting from Monday September 7th. We will reopen in our new home at 2pm on Tuesday 15th September, and look forward to seeing all our regular clients as well as some new faces. Be sure to pop in and say hi.

Laptop Training: Did you know we can help you learn more about your laptop. We’ve had a few clients lately bringing in their laptops for 1-1 training in Windows XP & Microsoft Office 2003 as well as Windows Vista & Microsoft Office 2007, why not drop in and have a chat with our staff about your requirements. At only $2 per hour it’s the cheapest training out there.

Lipstick in School (You've got to love this principal)

According to a news report, a certain private school in Brisbane was recently faced with a unique problem. A number of 12-year-old girls were beginning to use lipstick and would put it on in the bathroom. That was fine, but after they put on their lipstick they would press their lips to the mirror leaving dozens of little lip prints.

Every night the maintenance man would remove them and the next day the girls would put them back.

Finally the principal decided that something had to be done. She called all the girls to the bathroom and met them there with the maintenance man. She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian who had to clean the mirrors every night (you can just imagine the yawns from the little princesses). To demonstrate how difficult it had been to clean the mirrors, she asked the maintenance man to show the girls how much effort was required.

He took out a long-handled squeegee, dipped it in the toilet, and cleaned the mirror with it. Since then, there have been no lip prints on the mirror.

There are teachers.... and then there are educators

The Dead Frog A pupil told his kindergarten teacher that he had found a frog, and she inquired as to whether it was alive or dead. "Dead," the student informed. "How do you know?" the teacher asked. "Because I pissed in his ear," said the child innocently. "You did what?" replied the surprised teacher. "You know," explained the boy, "I leaned over and went 'Pssst.' The frog didn't move."

NEW SCHOOL MURAL Over the past few weeks a MARSSS group and Mrs Lamb have been painting a mural on the K-4 new toilets. We found a picture we liked after looking through many books, we chose something young students would like. We used exterior paint and mixed up colours from three primary colours. Watch out for the finished product. Huge thanks to all those students who have helped.
