New Year’s Eve came, we sat outside and enjoyed the heat and some nibbles, a few drinks, a few more drinks, then wham the power went out! Oh no what about all my Karaoke plans! Luckily the power was only off for about an hour, so after a few more drinks we were set. Into the lounge room, and on with the show. We started off easily with 8 Days a Week then moved onto Hard Day’s Night, Can’t Buy Me Love, I Want to Hold Your Hand, Here Comes The Sun, Yellow Submarine, Revolution, Hey Jude and many more. We were brilliant, even though my singing partner hadn’t even been born when these songs were written! Of course the copious drinks we’d had may have had a slight bearing on how well we thought we did. Especially as we had no audience, the boys stayed outside and enjoyed the cooler night air. But hey, what would they know, they just don’t know true talent when they hear it! We laughed, we sang, we ended the night sore of throat and giddy with amusement, but had a hell of a time. The worst part is I remember every wrong note and missed lyric. It was a great way to recharge the batteries ready for the year ahead. I’ll have to plan another get together to finish off all the songs we missed! I hope you all enjoyed your Christmas and New Year, and are back ready and raring to go in this new decade. I’d love to see some editorials written by local residents again this year. If you have an amusing, uplifting or just plain interesting story to tell, send it in and see yourself in print (of course the fact that this would save me from racking my brains thinking about things to write about and boring everyone to tears every month is quite beside the point ;-) I look forward to hearing from you all this year. Editorial Welcome to 2010. Does it seem like a decade has gone past since we were all terrified the end of the world had come? The Y2K bug didn’t really amount to much in the end did it? Planes didn’t come crashing down from the sky, all our money didn’t disappear overnight from our bank accounts, Governments didn’t topple (that all came later). Technology has certainly improved over the past 10 years and the plunging prices we are now seeing for computers, lcd tv’s and all the other “essential” bits and pieces we seem to think we need have to be seen to be believed. Which segues perfectly into what I really wanted to talk about. Last year I joined the thousands of others who’ve purchased a gaming console for home entertainment purposes. My choice was a Nintendo Wii (unfortunate name for a really fun piece of equipment). I bought it rather than any other type because it would actually make me get up and do stuff not just sit on the couch in front of the telly to play the games. I even invested in a balance board and some fitness games and they have been paying off (slowly I will admit, but while I may not have lost any weight, I’ve certainly gotten a little fitter, and had a lot of fun doing it). So as Christmas drew nearer and plans for a New Year’s Eve get together were made, a little light bulb went off over my head, what’s the perfect party activity? Karaoke of course. So after a little whisper in Santa’s ear, my new game for the Wii arrived. Beatles Rockband! (Hey I grew up in the 60’s and my older brother was an avid fan so don’t hold it against me). I bought a couple of microphones and joined the other hundreds in Harvey Norman on Boxing Day to get another bargain. Neighbourhood Watch Report

December Meeting 18 people attended this meeting which was held in conjunction with our Christmas Function at the George Town RSL. Everybody who attended enjoyed themselves and would like to thank David Brown for the use of his bus to take us to and from George Town.

January Meeting Only 9 people attended this meeting, including our local Policeman Terry Otis. At the meeting it was decided by all in attendance that the March Meeting 11th March 2010 would be held in conjunction with a trip to the Inveresk Rail Yards to see the restored Number 28 tram and a trip around the rail yards, a small fee of $5.00 would cover admission. The bus will leave the Fire Station at 6.50 pm on the 11th March. People wishing to participate in this event should contact David Brown on 63951245 or just mention it at the February meeting.

Police Report Over the Christmas period two 18 year old youths

have been charged with Burglary and Stealing and damage to public property following a break in at the Lilydale District School. If anybody sees any suspicious activity in or around the school please report it. The Lilydale Police number is 63952050 if no one is there you will be transferred to Launceston. Constable Otis also mentioned that during the last

couple of months the dumping of rubbish around the area has increased, he said that littering carried heavy penalties for those who are caught. Police are targeting littering. Recently a Rocherlea person was fined $600 for dumping rubbish. You will even be charged $120 for dropping a cigarette butt. (Another reason to give up) Police are investigating the dumping of rubbish in

the Goulees Road area at Holly Bank and shooting in the area. People are reminded that they need a permit to shoot on Forestry Land and there are rules in place about shooting within certain distances from residences. Police are also very keen to hear form anyone who

may have seen old furniture being moved into the same area. Furniture was found in the area with the remains of mannequins that had presumably been used for target practice, sitting on the furniture. A youth has been charged over a broken window at

the Liberty Service Station at Lilydale over the Christmas period. Police are also investigating the removal of food

from an outside freezer in the Retreat area. A person was seen in the area. Anybody who can assist the Police with enquiries on

any of the above incidents are urged to contact

Suspicious Incidents It would appear that instances of antisocial behaviour over the holiday period are on the increase and people are urged to note down details of any suspicious incidents they may witness. In some cases these incidents can be linked to crime in the area.

On January 7th a dark Grey Landrover Station wagon was seen in and around Lilydale, the same vehicle was seen the next morning at the North Lilydale cross roads it would appear that the occupant had spent the night there.

December 20th or 27th a White 4WD station wagon was observed on Second River Road traveling very slowly. The same vehicle was later observed on Golconda Road just out of Lilydale turning into driveways and acting suspiciously.

Remember If you lose your wallet or purse report the cards lost as soon as possible, don’t carry large sums of cash and check at the local Police Station and local Businesses to see if it has been handed in.

In the coming months there will be police from outside the area checking on speeding and conducting Random Breath Tests around the area.

Next Meeting The next meeting of the Lilydale Neighbourhood Watch will be held at the Fire Station on the 11th of February 2010 commencing at 8pm. Remember everyone is welcome to attend. Hope to see you there.

Lilydale Uniting Church Clean Up Australia Clean Up Australia Day is 20 years old this year. Some of the members of the Uniting Church thought it would be a good project to involve all of us who are disgusted at the amount of roadside rubbish in the Lilydale area.

We have registered with Clean Up Australia for the afternoon of Sunday 7 March and plan to clean the roadsides between the Lilydale township and the Lilydale Falls Park.

It would be great if we could have a good turnout of both individuals, and local groups.

Come for an hour, come for the afternoon, let’s see what a difference we can make.

Senior Citizens Do hope everyone had a great festive season the weather was so hot and dry for the children on school holidays.

Bowls have started back and we are going up to the club every Tuesday and Friday for practise, hope we can coax a few new members into joining us.

Our past President and Treasurer have both been on the sick list over Xmas but hopefully are on the mend now.

Our 2010 meeting will be on the 9th February at 1.30 pm in the club rooms.

Pete Pete was sitting at home one evening when the doorbell rang. He opened the door to see a 6-foot-tall cockroach standing on his doorstep. The cockroach punched Pete between the eyes and scampered off. The next evening, Pete was sitting at home when the doorbell rang. When he answered the door, the cockroach was there yet again. This time, he hit Pete in the stomach and karate chopped him on the back before running away. The third evening, Pete was again sitting at home when he heard the doorbell. He answered the door and for the third time the cockroach was there. It leapt at him and managed to stab him several times before running off. The gravely injured Pete was barely able to crawl to the telephone and summon an ambulance. He was rushed to intensive care, where they saved his life. The next morning, the doctor was doing his rounds. He stopped by Pete's hospital room and asked him what happened. Pete explained about the 6-foot-tall cockroach's attacks, culminating in the near-fatal stabbing. The doctor looked thoughtful for a moment and said, "Yes, there's a nasty bug going around!"

Lilydale Pony Club In January we had a great camp in combination with Launceston Pony Club. One of the highlights was to have a dressage qualifier event on one of the evenings. This enabled many pony club riders from all over the northern zone to compete to get an opportunity to go to the state dressage championships on January 30th.

Only riders who have achieved a set standard are allowed to compete at the championships. Many of our riders have now achieved that standard and will be going to the championships.

Our cross country course at 'Fairlands' in Alanvale now has some lower level grade 5 jumps. We plan to have some training days and competitions using the lower jumps later in the year. Our junior and adult riders will benefit from this.

We are also planning to upgrade the arena and horse stalls at the Karoola grounds this year.

Start the New Year with a Song! Tasmania’s Regional Coordinator for Sing Australia and Leader of Sing Australia Hobart, Jill North, will be visiting Lilydale on Monday 8 February to conduct a fun singing and information session on the unique concept of Sing Australia. It will be held at the Uniting Church Hall from 7:00 – 9:00pm. All members of the community who want to experience the great benefits of singing are welcome.

According to National Director and Founder of Sing Australia, Colin Slater OAM, singing is for everyone – really - that’s all men and women – not just the ‘good’ singers – and he has been telling communities all around Australia just that for the past ten years.

‘Singing is a healthy, positive and fun pursuit, especially when we sing with others,’ says Slater. ‘We sing because it is a natural human expression just like talking, laughing and crying. Everyone has the ability to sing and when they do sing it brings with it a whole lot of health and social benefits. How the voice sounds when we sing has nothing to do with achieving those benefits.’ North agrees, having experienced first hand the benefits of singing with Sing Australia Hobart for the last 7 years.

Sing Australia is a National network of singing groups and its philosophy of friendly, fun and inclusivity has now been embraced by nearly six thousand Australians from 140 towns in every state of Australia, except the Northern Territory. Members enjoy a broad repertoire of more than 350 songs allowing for all tastes in music with great variety and choices. All the singing groups have the same songbooks so that when groups come together in regions or nationally the singing is wonderful. It also means that when members travel around they can take their songbooks and call in on any of the groups along the way.

Sing Australia groups perform at thousands of events around the nation each year, making significant contributions to their communities. From markets, civic ceremonies, National events and everything in between, Sing Australia groups are in great demand.

Slater’s work during the past decade has focused on building a network of singing groups and since 2008 this has grown rapidly to include many dozens of communities suffering the effects of the current devastating drought. His ‘Connecting Australians in Singing’ project has received substantial support from the Australian Government and Slater was further recognised as an ACT finalist in this year’s Australian of the Year awards.

Jill North’s visit to Lilydale will take the form of a fun singing session. Participants will enjoy singing some great songs and will discover Sing Australia’s friendly and inclusive approach to singing. North wants to encourage everyone who would love to have a go at singing to come along on Monday night, especially if they haven’t sung before. Come and find out how to become part of a Sing Australia group – a group that will be encouraging and welcoming to everyone regardless of how well they sing. There will be no pressure, judgements or criticisms.

Tasmanian Regional Arts (Lilydale Branch) December 2009 was another very busy month for Branch members, with the finalising of the Peter Alting Memorial Arts Scholarship for the year, the Christmas pantomime and a successful end of year raffle.

Arts Scholarship A small committee of Branch members undertook assessment of the applicants for the 2009 Peter Alting Memorial Arts Scholarship in early December in conjunction with Ms Kerry Lamb from the Lilydale District School. Competition for the scholarships was extremely close and on making a decision the committee commended the work of all the students involved.

The 2009 Scholarship of $200 for Year 10 students was awarded to Charley Robertson, with a $100 encouragement award to Lisa Hodgetts. Recipient of the $50 Year 9 encouragement award was Sharee Lockett, with the $50 Year 8 award going to Claire Garden. Congratulations to all recipients.

The awards were presented at the District School Presentation Day on 15 December. All applicants received participation certificates.

Christmas Pantomime The reformed Lilydale Players performed the pantomime ‘Three Little Pigs’ on 12 December for an enthusiastic audience of some 70 children and adults. As usual, the big bad wolf was very menacing, but in the end the three little pigs prevailed, much to the delight of the youngsters. The afternoon was made all the more merrier by a visit from the ‘old’ fellow in red.

Thanks to all the players and others who entertained us and made the afternoon so enjoyable. We look forward to further performances from the Lilydale Players in 2010.

Annual General Meeting The 2010 annual general meeting of the Lilydale Branch was held at the Old Court House on 19 January. Office bearers for the year are – President - Ian Wiliams Vice- President - Di Blockey Secretary - Brenda Bryce Treasurer - Graeme Campbell

Membership fees for the year are $10 single and $20 family. Planning for Branch activities throughout 2010 is well under way and new members are most welcome.

Are You An Artist or Performer Looking for Support? Advice is received regularly by the Branch about various forms of assistance being offered to help persons involved in all forms of art, whether visual or performing. This assistance can take the form of grants, scholarships, exhibition opportunities, free publicity of exhibitions and performances, etc, and is offered by a wide range of organisations, including government departments and instrumentalities, corporations, business entities and individuals, to name a few.

Often, the Branch receives this information and, as it seemingly has no direct relevance to individual members, it languishes in our archives. Often the information conveyed is not reported in mainstream media and therefore does not come to the notice of the community at large.

To redress this situation, the Branch is offering to make this information generally available by email to anyone in the local community who may be interested in receiving it. This will be a free service and does not entail membership of the local Branch. If you wish to receive this advice on a regular basis, please send your details to our Secretary, Brenda Bryce at [email protected].

The next meeting of the Branch will be held on Wednesday 17 February 2010 at 231 Golconda Road, Lilydale, commencing at 7.30pm. All welcome.

Valentine’s Day Special HOW DO YOU DECIDE WHO TO MARRY? (written by kids) You got to find somebody who likes the same stuff. Like, if you like sports, she should like it that you like sports, and she should keep the chips and dip coming. - Alan, age 10

WHAT IS THE RIGHT AGE TO GET MARRIED? Twenty-three is the best age because you know the person FOREVER by then. - Camille, age 10

HOW CAN A STRANGER TELL IF TWO PEOPLE ARE MARRIED? You might have to guess, based on whether they seem to be yelling at the same kids. - Derrick, age 8

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOUR MOM AND DAD HAVE IN COMMON? Both don't want any more kids. - Lori, age 8

WHAT DO MOST PEOPLE DO ON A DATE? Dates are for having fun, and people should use them to get to know each other. Even boys have something to say if you listen long enough. - Lynnette, age 8 (isn't she a treasure!)

On the first date, they just tell each other lies and that usually gets them interested enough to go for a second date. - Martin, age 10

WHAT WOULD YOU DO ON A FIRST DATE THAT WAS TURNING SOUR? I'd run home and play dead. The next day I would call all the newspapers and make sure they wrote about me in all the dead columns. - Craig, age 9

WHEN IS IT OKAY TO KISS SOMEONE? When they're rich. - Pam, age 7

The law says you have to be eighteen, so I wouldn't want to mess with that. - Curt, age 7

Happy New Year everyone!!! With the busy 2009 Christmas season we had massive parcel consignments delivered to the Lilydale Post Office. In fact, parcels in general have increased dramatically throughout the year. Australia Post regulations for any post office state that we can only hold parcels for 10 working days and then they have to be returned to sender. Australia post policy also states that a parcel collection card must be presented with id before you can collect any parcels. Please ensure that your parcels are collected within that time frame and you bring your parcel card and id with you when collecting your parcels. However, if you cannot collect your parcel within 10 days for any reason, please call the Lilydale Post Office on 63951177 and our helpful staff will be only too happy to assist you in arranging an alternative collection or delivery point.

Hope you had a safe and happy Christmas and New Year period. Looking forward to seeing you in 2010 at the Lilydale Post Office.

The rule goes like this: If you kiss someone, then you should marry them and have kids with them. It's the right thing to do. - Howard, age 8

IS IT BETTER TO BE SINGLE OR MARRIED? It's better for girls to be single but not for boys. Boys need someone to clean up after them. - Anita, age 9 (bless you child)

HOW WOULD THE WORLD BE DIFFERENT IF PEOPLE DIDN'T GET MARRIED? There sure would be a lot of kids to explain, wouldn't there? - Kelvin, age 8

And my #1 Favorite is........ HOW WOULD YOU MAKE A MARRIAGE WORK? Tell your wife that she looks pretty, even if she looks like a dump truck. - Ricky, age 10

First Aid for Snake Bites: In Australia there are about 3,000 snake bites per year, of which 200 to 500 receive antivenom; on average one or two will prove fatal. About half the deaths are due to bites from the brown snake; the rest mostly from tiger snake, taipan and death adder. Some deaths are sudden, however in fact it is uncommon to die within four hours of a snake bite.

Let’s hope nobody is bitten, but if you are - Do NOT wash the area of the bite. It is important to retain traces of venom for use with venom identification kits at the hospital.

The "pressure-immobilisation" technique is cur-rently recommended by the Australian Resuscitation Council.

The lymphatic system is responsible for spread of most venoms. This can be reduced by the application of a firm bandage (as firm as you would put on a sprained ankle) over a folded pad placed over the bitten area. While very firm, it should not be so tight that it stops blood flow to the limb. Start bandaging directly over the bitten area, ensuring that the pressure over the bite is firm and even. Heavy crepe bandages are ideal, but any flexible material may be used. Clothing, towels, etc., may be torn into strips. Panty hose have been successfully used. Do not take off clothing, as the movement of doing so will promote the movement of venom into the blood stream. If you have enough bandages you can extend towards the centre of the body. This delays the spread of any venom that has already started to move towards the heart. A pressure dressing should be applied even if the bite is on the victim’s trunk or torso.

Keep the bitten limb and the patient still. Immobility is best attained by application of a splint or sling, using a bandage or anything to absolutely minimise all limb movement. Apply a splint to the limb. Any rigid object may be used as a splint, e.g., spade, piece of wood or tree branch, rolled up newspapers, etc. Bind it firmly to as much of the arm or leg as possible. Keep the patient still. Where possible, bring transportation to the patient (rather then vice versa). Don't allow the victim to walk or move the limb. Walking should be prevented.

The pressure-immobilisation approach is simple, safe and will not cause tissue damage (tourniquets or incision will cause damage and may make the situation worse).

Bites to the head, neck, and back are a special problem - firm pressure should be applied locally if possible.

Removal of the bandage will be associated with rapid systemic spread. Hence ALWAYS wait until the patient

is in a fully equipped medical treatment area before bandage removal is attempted.

It is important to use bandages that can retain enough pressure to the limb for the time that it takes to get to hospital. If inferior bandages are used the snake poison will spread.

We have large heavy crepe bandages for sale at the pharmacy 4 for $10.

2010 School Photographs To assist you in planning your budget for 2010, please be advised that school photos will be taken on Tuesday, 23rd February.

CWA Notes 2009 finished with a Christmas celebration – a visit to Derby to check out the coffee shop and art gallery, then a craft shop before coming back to Branxholm for a very substantial lunch at the hotel. Before coming home, we checked out a second hand shop. A good day.

Having had a break for the rest of December and January, it is now time to face 2010. We hope your Christmas was a special family time, and New Year a chance to take stock, make fresh plans. Hopefully for our CWA, a productive time with good fellowship and happy times along the way, sharing joys, remembering others, especially those who have lost loved ones.

First meeting will be 3rd February, 9.45 at the Uniting Church, with a meeting followed by shared lunch and a chance to chat. Please bring along ideas for the 2010 agenda – speakers/crafts/activities. On 3rd March, Gaye from Gaye’s Funeral Services will visit. This will be a chance to chat informally over lunch on the subject of pre-arranging a funeral. Something that will save a lot of anguish for family members. Would you like to join us for lunch and discussion?

A little quote ‘you must learn from the mistakes of others, you can’t possibly live long enough to make them all yourself’. Sam Levenson. Cheers.

Helpful Hints & Tips New Section: if you have some handy

hints and tips why not send them in for everyone to use.

The ideal pin cushion. Use a bar of soap, makes sewing easier, needle just slides through.

How to remove staples. An old nail clipper works fine for removing staples.

Prevent cut flowers from fading. Use a few drops of chlorine bleach in water, add an aspirin for life.

Save painting clean up time. Cover roller tray with aluminium foil then just throw away.

Dry shampoo your pet. Rub baking soda into fur and brush out. Will smell great.

Keep and use overripe bananas. Mash and freeze for making cakes and biscuits.

Make an emergency clothes brush. Wrap a piece of tape around the hand, sticky side out.

Good refrigerator deodoriser. Keep an open box of baking soda in it at all times.
