The Lilydale Progressive - March 2007 Page 1
Now, all we have to do is get a group together to get it all underway! There, that was easy, wasn’t it?
Come out from under that bed!
Initial thoughts are, • anecdotal stories (hopefully with a
modicum of truth and not slanderous; no names, no pack drill) This would entail getting out and talking to people in the district, maybe over afternoon teas and recording the stories for transcription.
• ‘Moments in History’ maybe, important events that have shaped the village/community.
• ‘People’ – goes with the first one. • ‘What it used to be like through the
years, to now’ (old photos, articles etc)
And most important, photos, clippings, anything to back it all up.
This will not be a quick project, probably not too easy either, but (there is always a but), the information is out there, the photos are out there, people have great stories to tell, it will be a real feature for the Village Green, something that the whole of the Community can get involved in and could be a forerunner to bigger ideas.
So, over to you all, if you are at all interested in putting your hand up for a community project and willing to help in any way, please contact
Carol Charlton: 6395 1263 Email: [email protected] Jayne Saddington: 6395 1129 at the Lilydale Online Access Centre Email: [email protected] Kathy Hawes: 6395 1204 The phones are manned and the operators are waiting for your call (not really) but we would love to hear from YOU.
Regards, Carol
Editorial At a recent Progress Association meeting a letter from Carol Charlton about a whole of community project to record the history of Lilydale was received. The Lilydale History Group is a sub committee of the Progress Association and has been trying to collect this information for the past few years. They have a large board all ready for information to be completed and displayed under the shelter at the Village Green. Along with the new Visitor Information boards currently under development (see article inside), this will certainly add a new dimension to the experiences of visitors and locals alike.
Whilst a Lilydale History board is a great starting point, there is a far greater scope for the collection of our local history. We don’t want to reinvent the wheel, we know there’s lots of interesting things already out there, and quite a few people already working on parts of the Lilydale Story. What we’d really like to do is gather information from those who don’t want to write the whole story, but have some interesting things and some great anecdotes, and the names of people who can be contacted for more formalised information. This way we can preserve it for our kids and their grandkids to be able to enjoy. Read on and find out how you can be part of this enjoyable project. “Everything old, is new again” Sounds like a good song title doesn’t it? Oops, it was!
Now that we have your attention, an idea to create ‘Story Board of Lilydale’ panels for the Village Green has been raised with the Progress Association. By all reports, it received favourable reaction from that Association and further the Lilydale Online Access Centre Management Committee has voted in favour of providing technical support (scanning and copying of photographs, use of computers etc) at their recent meeting. (Thank you, much appreciated).

Letter to the Editor
Lilydale with its surrounding rural areas is a beautiful place to be proud to raise our children in.
With the “Keep Australia Beautiful” campaign in full swing, don’t think that we have to be available on the first weekend in March to be able to make a difference.
What a great contribution we could all make if we simply spend a few extra minutes to tidy our roadside, each time we put the rubbish bin out for the Council collection.
I know that in most cases this rubbish is from motorists with little concern for the environment, but maybe if we show that we care, more and more people will do the same.
By the way, most roadside rubbish is recyclable and aluminium cans can be cashed in for $1.00 per Kg. What a great way for the kids to earn pocket money.
From: Looking forward to a cleaner roadside.
Visitor Information Board
The west facing surface of the left wing of the shelter structure on the Village Green has been approved for the placing of notices of interest to visitors. A special board to receive these notices is being fixed onto the existing surface. It will accommodate A3 sized notices on the top row and A4 sized notices on two lower rows. Each notice will be individually enclosed with a perspex cover designed to keep out dirt and moisture and to give some protection against UV. It is planned to give regular checking and cleaning of these covers. The notices should be designed to a high standard to maintain a quality image, to be printed and laminated.
A diagrammatic map of the village will be placed on the North facing surface adjacent to these notices. Each notice should carry a number which will be used to indicate the position of the business/Art studio etc. on the map.
The initial set-up and first year’s maintenance costs are $20 for the A3 size and $15 for the A4 size. Subsequent years will be charged at $10 per annum for both sizes to cover maintenance and cleaning.
(Cheques payable to the Lilydale Progress Association, which has formed a sub committee to run this facility, comprised of Sue & Peter Hall, Gillian Robnik and Jenny & Ian Scott))
If you wish to have your business advertised in this way please contact Sue and Peter Hall on 6395 1351 who will give you your notice number, which should be prominently included in your copy, and ask you to sign a contract document.

Karoola Playgroup
The playgroup is once again in full swing. A whole new committee has been elected and an exciting term of activities planned. On the 7th March we are off to the Bike Centre and later in the term we will all be visiting Old Mac’s Farm.
In between we have some fun craft and play activities for all the kids (and grown ups) to enjoy.
If you are interested in joining our playgroup you will be made most welcome. It is suitable for children from birth to 5 years and their parents or grandparents and we meet every Wednesday at the Karoola Hall (unless we have an outing planned) from 10-12. It costs $2.50 per family and morning tea is provided for adults (please bring morning tea/lunch and drink for children).
We have a printed schedule of activities for the term, so if you would like us to send you one or if you require any further information about playgroup, please contact us on the numbers below. Otherwise just turn up on Wednesday

Lilydale Neighbourhood Watch
This meeting was poorly attended, with only 8 people attending. Because of the low incidence of crime it is commonly believed that there is no urgency to attend these meetings, but if we become apathetic then crime will increase. The low incidence of crime is proof that NHW works.
We do need new Zone leaders so if you have a spare few hours on the second Thursday of each month please come and join us. Any member of the public is welcome. Each meeting is followed by a lovely supper.
Police Report There were four incidents of crime to report in our area. One of these incidents happened at our school.
Suspicious Incidents About ½ tank of diesel was taken from a truck in the Nth Lilydale area. Cars have been noted speeding in the Tunnel area; this is disappointing given the road toll already this year.

Do you have a car fitted with LPG? Recently there have been a few pressure ruptures on cars that had tanks retested between mid 2003 and August 2005.The problem is with the safety relief valve. If you are concerned you should contact a LPG tank installer to get your tank checked.
Did you know you MUST indicate when EXITING a roundabout, even when going straight ahead?
Our next meeting is to be held on the 8th March at 8pm at the Fire Station. Our Guest speaker is Mr John Lunnon from the Riverside NHW who will give us some great ideas on how to enjoy our retirement.
All welcome!!
Mary Walsh Centre News
What a busy month it has been!
We have farewelled both our share-cooks. Jennifer has reverted to being a fulltime mum and now also grand-mother, (congratulations Jennifer and family on the safe arrival of your little granddaughter) and Jo has moved on to a position involving more hours, managing a school canteen. Congratulations Jo on your new appointment. We wish both Jennifer and Jo all the best for the future.
We enjoyed singing with Heather and during a week’s break for me, Joan arranged a demonstration of chinese painting by Jenny Scott. Thanks to Jenny, the results were very impressive.
I was assisted by Joy Cox, from Wattle Group, to create a power point slide show which I presented at the recent Day Centre Network Conference. This presentation can be used in the future to promote the centre.
This week we attended the Uniting Church at Newnham where we were treated to a delicious sandwich and slice luncheon.
Look out for ”Granny Sarah” the Mary Walsh Centre’s entry in the Lion’s Scarecrow competition.
Community Car
A few years ago the Mary Walsh Centre’s Board in conjunction with the Retirement Unit’s Board commissioned a Needs Analysis Survey of the Lilydale and surrounding areas.
One of the findings that this survey highlighted was the need for a Community Car, and members of the Mary Walsh Centre Board are working towards getting this project off the ground.

Please phone Sharon or Wayne if you have plans to sell in the near future.
In the November 2006 Progressive we asked for “Expressions of interest from the Public” to help us achieve our goal.
Along with members of the Public we have formed a Sub Committee to establish the service of a Community Car.
We are in particular looking for the services of a Volunteer Co-ordinator/s to take the bookings, and Volunteer Drivers to transport clients to and from their required destinations.
While both these jobs sound hugely daunting, requiring a great deal of time, and a tremendous commitment from those involved, the reality is that they don’t necessarily need to be.
When the workload is shared by several committed individuals it makes the job much easier and we now call on you, the people who live in our Community to become involved.
Write to The Secretary, Mary Walsh Centre, P O Box 151, Lilydale 7268. or phone Helen on 6395 2060 to become involved in a project that will ultimately benefit the whole Community.

Health Notes from the Lilydale Pharmacy
Being back at school can take your breath away
Asthma is a serious medical condition, in all age groups and all year round. Australian school children are at especially high risk of an acute asthma attack at this time of year and it seems to be related to going back to school.
Statistics show a higher rate of emergency visits and hospitalisation among children with asthma during late February/early March. The increased risk of hospitalisation for asthma was threefold in children aged five to fourteen years and double in pre-schoolers, with the peak occurring three and a half weeks into the new school year. Increased risks were also recorded at the start of each subsequent school term; however, the “February Epidemic” is by far the most significant.
It is important that parents monitor their children’s asthma when they go back to school, ensure they take their preventer medications as prescribed, and that they always carry their reliever medication with them.
Asthma affects one child in six and is the most common medical condition for school children in Australia. Not surprisingly, it’s a common cause of school absenteeism.
The back to school asthma spike could be due to increased exposure to respiratory viruses, predominately rhinovirus, the same virus that triggers the common cold – and also a relaxing of the asthma management strategies over the summer.
During the summer months there are fewer respiratory viruses around and children spend their time in relative isolation, compared with the level of contact they have during the school term. When kids return to school and start mixing again, respiratory infections start to circulate and these can trigger asthma. The rise in attacks could also be a result of allergies to dust mites and mould spores in classrooms locked up during the holidays.
Many parents and a lot of doctors will also allow children to have a break from their asthma preventer medication over the longer holidays, when there is less exposure to triggers.
Asthma sufferers should carry their blue reliever medication with them at all times; and parents should ensure their child’s written asthma plan was up to date and schools had a copy of the plan.

C.W.A
C.W.A started the new year’s activities off with morning tea and sharing experiences of the previous couple of months as well as showing off finished handcraft articles. After sharing lunch we had our 1st meeting of the year. We received a note of appreciated from the school for the $1000 donation we gave toward the Matthew Goodall playground, also for the annual encouragement awards which we give on speech night.
We will be attending the C.W.A Group Forum on the 7th March at St. David’s Anglican Church, Riverside, 10.00 am for 10.30 am instead of having our usual meeting at Lilydale on that day. Our regular meetings are held on the 1st Wednesday of every month (except January) at 1.30 p.m. New members are always welcome.
The Lilydale Arnolds
Robert and Eliza Arnold, with their children George, Henry, Tamar and Isaac arrived in Tasmania in 1859. They spent the next 10 years in the Hagley district working off their passage, saving to buy land and adding their Tasmanian born sons Samuel, Robert, John and William James (Jim) to the family.
Robert purchased a 50 acre block at Upper Piper (now Lilydale) in 1866 and the family moved a couple of years later. George, Tamar, Isaac, John and William James all lived and worked in the District.
Tamar married Ludwig Bardenhagen and although childless they had a big influence on the ongoing structure of the town. George married Amelia Wachterhauser, the daughter of German immigrants, Henry and Isaac married sisters Ellen and Lucy Hill, Samuel married Jane Gillard from the North West coast, John married Alice White, whose parents built the Falls Farm and William James (Jim) married Elsie Proctor, the daughter of blacksmith Fred Proctor.
The Arnold name has carried through in Lilydale to the present through Isaac and John, but many other names have been added through marriage, including Dornauf, Boland, Hollingsworth, Jordan, Walker, Dolbey, Shepherd, Kelp, Kerkham, Ferguson, Casboult, Davis, Mahnken, Barrett, Cook and Hodgetts by the third generation.
I have been researching the story of Robert and his descendants for many years and have at last compiled the information into a manuscript I hope to publish, together with over 100 photographs and an almost complete chart of Robert’s descendants. To do this, I need to know how many people would be interested in purchasing a book of approximately 250 pages to help cover the cost of publication.

The Singing Kettles by Kathy Hawes
January 2005. It was reported “One of Australia’s earliest successful country trios, The Singing Kettles, was elevated to the Country Music Roll of Renown (Australia’s highest country music honour) in Tamworth this afternoon. The award to The Singing Kettles was accepted by Bill and Ross Kettle and Grady, the son of Max Kettle who died at the peak of the trio’s career in 1971”.
The Singing Kettles were born and raised in the small town of Lilydale, Tasmania. Their singing career began at church socials and school functions, and it was their local minister who "christened" them. One night in his introduction he said ".... You have all heard whistling kettles, but now here are the Singing Kettles," ... and the name stuck! In their first few years after leaving school, the Kettles worked as timber cutters on Tasmania's North East Coast. Their first recording “Judy” was released in 1961. Bill and Ross were working as a duo at that time, as Max was only about 11 years old and it was not only the commercial first recording by the Singing Kettles, but it was also the first release for the brand new Hadley record label, which was then based in Launceston, Tasmania. In 1969, the Singing Kettles, then a trio, made their next big step. They moved to Tamworth and then to Sydney playing the pubs and clubs.
On January 22nd, 1971, tragedy struck the trio with the sudden death after a show in Sydney of Max Kettle. He suffered a massive attack of asthma, an affliction that had plagued him since birth. He had celebrated his 21st birthday only a fortnight before. Bill and Ross continued as a duo and toured Australia for the next 17 years. Among their honours, was their induction into the "Hands of Fame" in Tamworth in 1978. The end of the Singing Kettles came in 1988. Bill

Senior Citizens Club News
It was passed at our last meeting to change our meetings to the first Tuesday in the month, starting from the 6th March.
Club days are Tuesday and Friday afternoons of each week. All Seniors welcome to come along for a friendly chat and afternoon tea, give us your ideas for any activities you are interested in and bring a friend.
Pennant Bowls: We have managed to get two teams with emergencies into the Winter Pennants this year. This year Lilydale have ‘stand alone’ teams, for the past two years we have been playing as part of the Riverside Club, last year playing off in the Final. This means that our Club Rooms will be used for pennants games on alternate Wednesday evenings. We hope that the visit-ing players enjoy their time at Lilydale, and that our teams do well in the competition.
The Northern Regional bus trip, taking place on the 25th February, to the Blue Wren Restaurant, sees 11 of our members going; we do hope they enjoy their day.
The Perth Carnival was a success with 6 mats down. Lilydale sent 2 teams, everybody enjoyed themselves as usual, the lunch was special.
We wish all the Seniors travelling to Hobart for the State Carnival in March, a safe trip and good bowling.
Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday, 6th March at 1.30 pm in the Club rooms.

• Doaks Road Bridge crossing Rocky Creek • Bangor Road Bridge crossing Second River • Doaks Road footpath construction All bridge work is tentatively programmed for end April/early May 2007. This timing is to ensure there is no impact on school holidays and Easter. 1. The Bangor Road Bridge upgrade will necessitate a road closure. The bridge will be upgraded in concrete
and will be wide enough to take 2 full lanes of traffic. We will be contacting the school, essential services, buses and locals at a later date.
2. The Doaks Road Bridge will be lengthened by 4 metres. The new bridge will be built in two halves to ensure one lane is kept open to through traffic.
Doaks Road footpath is programmed to begin early March 2007 and it is expected to take 4 weeks to complete. The work is constructing a new footpath, kerb & channel from No. 18 to the recreation ground. The reason for the work is to create safe pedestrian access from the town centre to the recreation ground.
As this section of road will be widened to match the existing road, some trees and shrubs will have to be removed. Council’s City Services will be doing this work.
A contractor, Crossroads Civil Contracting will be building the new footpath.

Farm 2007 The first week back has been busy for everyone, settling in, making new friends and sorting out everything, the farm Vocational Education and Training (VET) students are no different. The students and teachers have spent a lot of time sorting out what courses students want to study, printing out course outlines and making sure email and computer passwords all work. Courses on offer include Hospitality, Rural Certificates (which encompass a range of topics from poultry, cattle, horse management to Viticulture), Aged Care and ICT, are just a few on offer. The farm also had a visit from an ex-student who had a work accident and is now in a wheelchair. He was taking his first drive in his modified ute. It was GREAT to see him choose his old school for his first big day out. All the students ran to greet him and give him a hand. One of those magical moments. On Friday afternoon the Grade 9-10 students and teachers came for a visit and helped to raise the wires on the vineyard. Their help saved many hours of work and were a fantastic help. Students also got to see a snippet of what the farm has on offer. Ms Stanfield
