CIB are investigating and they have already recovered most of the property- most importantly all of the firearms. Sometime during the day on the 18th September an unlocked house along Austins Road, Turners Marsh was entered with firearms stolen as well as cash, jewellery and tools. CIB are investigating Disappointingly the firearms and ammunition were not stored correctly and the owner will be charged. Members of the Community are reminded to ensure they store firearms and ammunition correctly. ....................

November 6th – 15th: Jennifer Scott’s Exhibition of Chinese Style Paintings Old Library (Old Court House building, next to the Memorial Hall)

Lilydale Arts is holding an exhibition for one of our talented local Artists. Jennifer Scott is well known for her Chinese style Paintings as well as for teaching the craft. Jenny has used the Chinese freestyle technique of painting since 1967 after seeing an exhibition of the work of Chung Chen Sun, a world-renowned artist and

educationalist who had started the Malaysian Institute of Art. She realised straight away that this was the technique that would enable her to produce the effects of life and vitality that she was seeking to produce. Jenny lived in Kuala Lumpur and studied with Chung Chen Sun for five years, becoming highly proficient in this Chinese technique of painting. She has also attended courses at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) causes abdominal pain, bloating and alternating constipation and diarrhoea. The cause is unknown, but factors such as emotional stress, infection and some foods can aggravate the condition. Treatment options in-clude medications, and dietary modifications which can include a low FODMAP diet where specific trig-gers are selectively excluded. Symptoms vary widely from person to person but include; Abdominal pain or cramp, often relieved by

passing wind. Diarrhoea or constipation, or one then the other. Feeling full or bloated. Excess wind Heartburn or indigestion Nausea or loss of appetite. Most people have mild symptoms that come and go, but sometimes they can be so severe as to in-terfere with daily activities. Although IBS is dis-tressing, it does not cause damage or lead to other bowel diseases. There are a variety of triggers that can aggravate IBS. These include Stress, including strong emotions like anxiety, anger or fear; Eating can make the symptoms worse, or just some types of food (alcohol, caffeine,

sweeteners, fatty food, dairy) Gut infections – however there is no evidence that

candida (thrush) makes IBS worse. Some medicines. E.g. codeine and iron makes con-

stipation worse. The symptoms of IBS can also be symptoms of other bowel diseases – so if you think you have IBS you should consult your doctor, and be tested for the other bowel diseases. When the other diseases have been excluded, then you have IBS – but at least it’s not going to harm you. There is no cure for IBS, so it’s about managing your symptoms and learning how to live with it. Try to identify all your triggers by keeping records of your symptoms and what you do, eat, drink, emotions and medicines. Reduce caffeine (tea, coffee, cola), Reduce alcohol, Modify your diet. Try a low FODMAP diet. Try slowly increasing the amount of fibre in your

diet, as this often helps constipation.

Drink more water (up to 8 glasses a day) Don’t smoke Learn and practice relaxation techniques to manage stress – eg yoga, tai-chi Exercise moderately – about 30 minutes a day. Some medicines can be helpful. Anti-spasm medicines can reduce intestinal activity, cramp and diarrhoea. E.g. peppermint oil, Buscopan and Donnatab. Anti-diarrhoea medicines like Lomotil, Imodium and Gastro-stop. Probiotics like Inner Health sometimes help. Regular fibre supplements and occasional laxatives can help with constipation. The Low FODMAP diet was developed by researchers at Monash University. They have identified a group of carbohydrates that seem to aggravate IBS symptoms. By eliminating these from the diet, symptoms can be dramatically improved. The LVM committee strive to encourage new stall holders every month to provide a variety of offerings to visitors so there is always something different. This mar-ket was no different with new products including goats milk body products, spices and vinegars and cookies and truffles. The LVM continues to support local not for profit groups with stalls provided to the Lions Club, Land Care and Arts Group, as well as local kids fundraising for school trips, so if you are try-ing to raise money for a good cause then drop us an email and we’ll do our best to help you out with a free spot. The atmosphere is kept vibrant every market by rotating stall holdings and having varying live entertain-ment. This market visitors were entertained by the extremely talented Tim Gambols singing and playing his piano on the back of the old Fargo. Food and beverage requirements were again well provided for by the Lions Club, LVM bar and Coffee Republic with coffee/tea and nibbles. Remember the LVM Bar also has a variety of Tasmanian wines, beers and ciders if you need to stock up at home. The next LVM market will be held on Sunday 8th November 2015 from 10am to 2pm, so reserve the date and drop in for a visit - look forward to seeing you there!

NEWS FROM LILYDALE BOWLS CLUB Thanks to all who attended our trivia night in October. It was a very successful evening.

Special thanks must go to Daryl and Jill Wells for once again collating the "trivia" and giving up their time to MC on the night. Our Saturday Division 2 team have started the season well with two wins. Division 5 Saturday team won their first game by a very comfortable margin and were narrowly defeated at Deloraine in the second game. Our Thursday pennant team started the season very well with a 50 shot victory over Trevallyn.

Markets continue to be a worthwhile fundraiser and our last raffle winner was Anita Denholm of Newstead. We are organising our Christmas raffle as well with first prize being a $300 IGA Voucher which would certainly be handy and easy on the budget to stock up on all your goodies for the Christmas period. As well we will have an additional ten prizes so please buy a ticket when you see our members selling closer to Christmas – we would love locals to win any of the raffle prizes as our previous Market raffle winners have come from far afield – Hadspen, Swansea and Penguin. The raffle will be drawn at Carols on the Green on Saturday 19 December – pencil this important date into your diary. Don’t forget to stock up on your traditional Lions Xmas Cake and Puddings as well – Lions have been selling these cakes for many years. They still have the traditional taste and are excellent value.

At the November and December markets we are hav-ing a Christmas book sale – adult books/novels will be $2 each and children’s books will be 5 for $5. This applies to both new and second-hand books and is an excellent way to get children interested in reading – also great value for money. Look for our book stall just inside the door of the Memorial Hall but don’t go past our sausage sizzle without stopping for a chat and buying one of our mouth watering sausages. On 22 November we are conducting our annual Senior Citizens Bus Trip to Ross in the Tasmanian midlands.

Roasted Beetroot, Walnut & Goat Cheese Salad Serves approx 4 - 5 portions Ingredients: 1kg fresh beetroot, skin on 1 x large Red Spanish Onion, thinly sliced 500g Rocket leaves 250g Goats cheese, chevre 250g walnuts Honey - small amount Olive oil - small amount Dressing - store bought Caramelised Balsamic Vinegar Method: 1) Place beetroot, skin on, in a roasting tray. Drizzle some olive oil over them, then cover tray with foil. Roast in oven at 160 degrees C for approx. 4 hours. Remove from oven, allow to cool, then peel and slice. 2) Place walnuts on a oven tray, drizzle with honey, then roast walnuts in oven at 150 degrees C, for 15 minutes. Allow to cool. 3) In a bowl, add the sliced beetroot, thinly sliced red onion, rocket leaves, and roasted walnuts. Dress with the Caramelised Balsamic Vinegar. 4) Break the goats cheese apart, and place on top of the salad.

This freestyle technique depends entirely on the power of the line, which means that control of the brush is paramount. This entails the need to know how to load the brush with just the right amount of ink and then to make the stroke with total control of speed and pressure.

The Five Treasures of the Chinese artist’s studio are the brush, the ink, the grindstone (which controls the quality of the ink), the water, and finally the paper, or silk, on which the painting is to be done. Colour is not essential but, if used, should be appropriate.

A Chinese critic will usually study the composition and the brush strokes in a painting before considering the painting as a whole. The white areas in the painting are essential to the composition. The accuracy of the drawing is not as important. The power of the line can express volume and motion, so that even static subjects can have vitality.

The exhibition will be opened on Friday 6th and Jenny will talk about her work. This will give us an insight into an art form that may not be familiar to most of us. The exhibition will then run from November 6th to 15th in the Old Library (Old Court House building, next to the Memorial Hall) and will be open from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm every day.

Jenny will be available to talk about her paintings and answer questions for much of the time that the exhibition is open. She has painted Greetings cards which will also be available for sale. The last day of the exhibition is the day of the monthly Lilydale Market: two good reasons for visiting and enjoying what our country town has to offer.

Painted Poles Report: Some of our painted poles are deteriorating and Leanne Hodgetts will begin work on restoration in December. The poles are a unique feature of our village, one of the attractions that draw people here, so it is important to maintain them. Donations to help with this are greatly appreciated.

COUNTRY WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION

On a cool October morning, seven faithfuls and young Charlie met for the monthly CWA meeting. After discussing the pros and cons of nose piercing, after care and the best place to go, bank investments that yield more than one cent per month per $1,000, the business of the day began. Minutes of September, balance sheet, income (from CWA shop in Launceston, soup and sandwich catering for a bus group) and expenditure (school awards, empty stocking fund, rent and travelling expenses) were passed.

Socially, there is a Melbourne Cup Day conducted by Winnaleah/Derby CWA at the Australian-Italian Club, Prospect, after a Mayoral reception at the Town Hall.

Conference resolutions (palliative care, dementia care and night time staffing levels, junk mail, lurid television news presentations in family viewing time, abolition of the death penalty) were discussed, rea-soned and voted on at conference. Guest speakers were from Ambulance, Kidney Health, Palliative Care. Topics for the coming year – health subject, kidneys/fund raising = Ambulance Tas/study country, Nepal/and a veg/fruit study – rhubarb (celery with high blood pressure?) Statewide group and committee reports were presented at the Annual Meeting, officers elected, Author Deb Hunt opened the AGM – she has had an interesting and varied life from Gloucestershire, UK, to Broken Hill, not sure where now. Her latest writing is “Australian Farming Families”. Awards were presented.

The CWA Shop in Launceston celebrated sixty years in October, we would have had a report on that except our representative was a little anxious and turned up a day early!

A group meeting was held at George Town on 20 October. Twenty hand knitted beanies for a Northern Territory Aboriginal settlement were given.

After closing the meeting, those who were able to remain shared lunch, a visitor and three well behaved children from Bridport arrived, along with Debbie Smith from George Town with her husband. Debbie guided us very patiently through the stages of making an origami flower ………. How come the children were fast and accurate with their work? We were all proud of the results. This scribe’s brain and origami somehow don’t click……… next day the steps needed to make another had been erased from memory!

Congratulations to Norma who gained a second plac-ing in the state wise Edna Rundle Award. This is a very prestigious competition for four articles of needle work.

Lilydale District Progress Association (LDPA) The General Meeting for the LDPA was held on Tuesday 6th October 2015. With this being the first meeting of the new committee, discussions were on what the aim and purpose of the LDPA is within the Lilydale community. The committee members were asked to talk with local community members to provide opinions for review at the next meeting. LILYDALE LANDCARE: The last couple of months have again been busy for all those who care for the land, in whatever capacity. As the weather warms the grass and weeds start to grow, but why is it that the weeds seem to grow more? Well in most cases it means your soil needs improvement, so try a soil conditioner like Seasol, add organic matter and aeration can work wonders. Our soils here are deficient in some trace elements and are inclined to be acidic. (which is fine if you’re growing blueberries, rhodos and camellias, not so good for pastures.) It is really worth having your soils tested and make a few adjustments to really reap the benefits. Two of our members recently attended the Landcare Tasmania Conference in the beautiful Huon Valley. Lots of inspiring speakers, great field trips and a fun Awards Night and dinner M C’d by the diminutive but very amusing and energetic Costa from Gardening Australia. Transcripts of most of the sessions will be available soon to anyone interested. It was a great opportunity to see what other Landcare groups are up to, and I can tell you our group compares very favourably. We are moving our gear into the container on the school farm very soon. It has been a long and drawn out battle with council. Once that is done and dusted we will be applying for more grants to further enhance our district. Members are reminded your annual fees are due, and you can now pay by direct debit, so stay alert for information about that. Help will be needed for the next Lilydale Market stall as some members will be away. Please contact Nick Wordsworth, Kate Case or Wilma Ashby to offer your support.

Golconda Road, Lebrina from Denison Gorge Road to the railway crossing will be upgraded early in the New Year. Andrew Walters Pty Ltd has been awarded the contract to widen this section of road to an 8 metre wide sealed road. They plan to start the work early in the New Year and as with all road work there will be directional signage and a lowered speed limit in the work area. The work should take some weeks to complete. Draft Bushfire Management Strategy The City of Launceston owns and manages approximately 400 hectares of open forest, woodland and grassland vegetation in 34 Reserves. A Draft Bushfire Management Strategy has been developed and it is intended to be a 10 year strategy with a minor review in 5 years. Tasmanian Fire Service and Parks and Wildlife and the Tamar Fire Management Area Committee were consulted in the development of this strategy and we now invite the community to comment.
