On average, 1 in 8 men will have depression and 1 in 5 men will experience anxiety at some stage of their lives.

Women are more likely to experience depression and anxiety, but men are less likely to talk about it. This increases the

EDITORIAL

It is almost certain that someone you know suffers from depression or

anxiety. Can you recognise it? Have they seen someone about it? It may just need a suggestion from family,

friend or work colleague to help them on the way to getting assistance.

Beyond Blue and the Lions Club of Lilydale will co-host an information evening in Lilydale at 7pm on Friday 20 March. A

guest speaker from Beyond Blue will present his personal story, answer your questions on depression and anxiety, and

provide resources and information on Beyond Blue and the services it provides. The venue for the event will be advertised

in the March edition of the Progressive, and the presentation will be followed by a light supper. All Lilydale and district community

members are invited to attend. There is no charge and it may help you or someone you know on the way

A blonde, wanting to earn some money, decided to hire

herself out as a handyman-type and started canvassing a

wealthy neighborhood. She went to the front door of the

first house and asked the owner if he had any jobs for her

to do. "Well, you can paint my porch. How much will you

charge?" The blonde said, "How about 50 dollars?" The

man agreed and told her that the paint and ladders that

she might need were in the garage. The man's wife, inside

the house, heard the conversation and said to her

husband, "Does she realise that the porch goes all the way

around the house?" The man replied, "She should. She was

standing on the porch." A short time later, the blonde

came to the door to collect her money. "You're finished

already?" he asked. "Yes," the blonde answered, "and I had

paint left over, so I gave it two coats. "Impressed, the man

reached in his pocket for the $50.

"And by the way," the blonde added,

"that's not a Porch, it's a Ferrari."

Back Pain

Muscle and ligament strains are the most common cause of back pain; and the neck and lower back are the most common sites of pain. Pain may be associated with stiffness, making it hard to turn or bend in a certain direction.

Things that can contribute to back pain include;

Heavy lifting and bending

Sitting for long periods of time in poorly

designed work areas

Staying in one position for a long time

Weak muscles (lack of exercise)

Being overweight

Emotional stress (increases tension in

muscles)

Pregnancy

Arthritis, sciatica, vertebral fracture, infection, disc degeneration. Most cases of back pain will get better in a few weeks. Keep trying to do your normal activities, but go very slowly and let the pain tell you when

you are doing too much. Stop any activity that causes pain or leg numb-ness or tingling.

Hot or cold packs can be helpful.

Sleep on your back on a firm mattress with 2

pillows under your knees, and a low pillow for your head.

Stretches, exercises and massage can be

helpful. Try a physiotherapist or osteopath. Pain relieving and anti-inflammatory gels and tablets can provide comfort. These are available ‘over the counter’ from a pharmacy. You should go to the doctor if you have had a fall, or any ‘red flag’ signs such as unexplained weight loss, fever or recent infection; as this

could indicate a serious disease. Only about 1% of sudden (acute) back pain is due to serious disease and having an X-ray is only necessary if you have ‘red flag’ sign.

If your back pain persists for 3 months, then you have ‘chronic back pain’. This requires additional therapies and you will need to visit your doctor for X-rays and other treatment.

Depression affects up to 1 in 10 women while they

are pregnant and almost 1 in 7 women during the first year after the birth. Anxiety is likely to be at least as common as

depression during pregnancy and the year following, and many women experience both conditions at the same time. Understanding the risks and recognising the signs

and symptoms of depression and anxiety can help you to recognise them in yourself and others. The important thing to remember is that effective

treatments are available and, with the right care, most people recover. Millions of young people in Australia are also living with anxiety and depression Youthbeyondblue is working to reduce the impact of

anxiety and depression in young people by raising awareness and understanding, empowering young people to seek support, and providing information on recovery,

management and resilience. What can you do? You should be able to recognise the symptoms of

Depression and Anxiety. Like knowing CPR, it may improve a family member or friend’s health and ultimately may save a life.

Noting the statistics above it is certain that you know someone suffering from these illnesses, so please come along to this information evening and get the topic out in

the open. Some of the information above was taken from the Beyond Blue

website at www.beyondblue.org.au

LILYDALE COUNCIL MEETING. (1928, May 10)

The monthly meeting of the Lilydale Council was held on Saturday last. Present:-Crs. G. E. Archer, Jas. Box, W. J. Hill, L. A. Procter, F. Kelp, A. C. Rice. C. W.

McCarthy, and Charles Haas. The newly elected councillors signed the usual declarations before taking their seats. The Warden's allowance was fixed at £353, the

same as last year, and treasurer's allowance at £3. Cr. Procter was elected Warden, Cr. W. J. Hill Deputy Warden, and Cr. Charles Haas treasurer. It was considered

desirable to give the Inspector increased powers in connection with urgent road work, and it was decided to submit a report and define his duties at the next meeting. The secretary to the Attorney-General advised that the

question of a gravel reserve at Rocherlea had been referred to the Minister for Lands and Works, and on receipt of his reply the council would be further advised.

Mr. Chamblerlain, the roads foreman, stated that the roads would be coated with bitumen in the near future, and if this were done they would not require so much gravel. Mr. D.

Cocker, solicitor, of Launceston, wrote claiming one shilling per yard for the gravel taken from the property of Mr. Leslie Taylor at Rocherlea. It was decided to pay one

shilling per yard for the gravel taken from this property for the current year. Mr. T. H. Faulkner, of Lisle, wrote offering to repair two

culverts on the Lisle-road for £6, but wrote a second letter stating the matter could be held over until the return of Mr. H. C. Watson. He also made application to construct a

tail-race under the road at Lisle. The matter was left in the hands of the inspector to deal with. Mr. A. B. Boyd, of Nabowla, wrote stating he had paid the sum of £11 in

timber toll, and also several pounds in rates, and asked for the road leading to his property to be repaired. The Inspector was authorised to have the matter attended to.

Mr. H. V. Sellers wrote asking for a short length of cords on the road leading to his property to be taken up, and the road put in order. The matter was left in the hands of Messrs. Procter and Kelp, who were authorised also to

have repairs affected to the road leading to the property of F. H. Hart at Underwood. Mr. J. H. Wadley. of Nabowla wrote, applying for the use of the old decking left over

from the bridge over the Forester in return for allowing the logs for the bridge to be carted over his property. -Granted. Mr. C. H. Bird applied for an adjustment on the

royalty paid for the gravel taken off his property for repairs to the Bangor Road. The clerk reported that a mistake had been made when sending in the account. It was resolved to

adjust the matter. Mr. S. J. Arnold wrote applying for permission to erect a second petrol pump in front of his premises on the main road. Cr. Rice moved "That the

application be granted provided that the site, etc., is approved by the council's inspector." Seconded by Cr. Box and carried.

Mr. J. Allan advised that the council's application to have portion of an unused street at Underwood closed and added to the Public Recreation Ground was still under

consideration by the Minister for Lands. Correspondence in connection with the alteration of the time-table on the North-Eastern Line, which included a letter from the Commissioner for Railways had agreed to

meet the local bodies interested in the subject at the end of the present month. Mr. J. S. Martin wrote claiming £3. 3s for drawing up

plans, etc., in connection with the completion of the reservoir.

The clerk reported that Mr. Martin had been paid £1 for

this work in December, 1926, and had not raised any ob-jection to the amount at that time. Mr. Haas stated that he made the arrangement with Martin, and the

payment agreed upon was £1 1s. No further action was taken in the matter. Very lengthy correspondence was tabled in connection

with the position of postmaster at Turner's Marsh. Three letters had been written to a returned soldier, who had made enquiries in connection with the position, and as no

reply was received a local resident had been recommended for the position and had been appointed. After this had been done a letter was received from the returned soldier to the effect that he was an applicant for the position, but it

was then too late to do anything in the matter. Mr. D. S. Jackson, H.H.R., wrote, stating he would interview the Post master-General in connection with the hours at the

Lilydale telephone exchange. In reply to the council's letter asking for the River Tamar to be controlled by a commission of experts, and the

present board abolished, the secretary to the Premier wrote, stating that the control of waterways and the working of marine boards are being seriously considered

by the Government, but this was a matter that only Parliament could deal with. The tourist and publicity officer of the Tourist Advisory Board wrote, asking for a

list of the direction boards required in the municipality. This was left in the hands of the clerk and inspector. Authority was received from the Education Department

for the expenditure of £5 on repairs to a large window and fence at the Tunnel school. The Secretary for Public Health wrote in connection with the recent sanitary survey

of the district. He was prepared to allow the alterations to the Underwood hall to stand over for the time being, but they must be carried out as soon as finances would permit.

The statement of accounts showed a credit balance of £325.

The Lone Ranger and Tonto walked into a saloon and sat down to have a

drink.

After a few minutes, a big tall cowboy walked in and said "Who owns the

big white horse outside?" The Lone Ranger stood up, hitched his gun belt,

and said, "I do....Why?"

The cowboy looked at the Lone Ranger and said, "I just thought you’d like

to know that your horse is about dead outside!"

The Lone Ranger and Tonto rushed outside and sure enough Silver was

ready to die from heat exhaustion. The Lone Ranger got the horse water

and soon Silver was starting to feel a little better.

The Lone Ranger turned to Tonto and said, "Tonto, I want you to run

around Silver and see if you can create enough of a breeze to make him

start to feel better." Tonto said, "Sure, Kemosabe" and took off running

circles around Silver.

Not able to do anything else but wait, the Lone Ranger returned to the

saloon to finish his drink.

A few minutes later, another cowboy struts into the bar and asks, "Who

owns that big white horse outside?" The Lone Ranger stands again, and

claims, "I do, what's wrong with him this time?"

"Nothing, but you left your injun runnin!"

“WHAT WILL BE THE CHURCH OF THE FUTURE”

from Phil Mahnken

Hi all,

I find it fascinating that a (readable and balanced)

religion versus science discussion such as this appears

on page two of The Cornwall Chronicle in 1879. Link

below.

Why shouldn't it? I am so used to agricultural show

reports, road trust or council notes, wedding

announcements and obituaries, war reports or

Dr Morse's Indian Root Pills and so on, that a

philosophical discussion (that Richard Dawkins might

deign to peruse) caught me by surprise.

The acknowledgement then in 1879 that literal

interpretation of the Bible is discredited is also

interesting.

I should not be surprised - that was a time of great

ferment in the British churches, with Darwinism,

Wesleyanism, Salvation Army, missionary-ism in the

colonised world. I guess I am also used to assuming

that most Lilydale people (most country people? most

Australians of that time?) were still church going be-

lievers, many very devout and "wowserish" by later

standards.

In the obituary of my father's maternal grandfather at

Ringarooma, it was said of Patrick O'Doherty "In

him, the Roman Catholic Church will lose one of her

most zealous sons and supporters."

All the Protestant elders and supporters and piano

players were pleased to have their church service

acknowledged in the public media too, of course.

Catholic versus Protestant was more the topic of the

day rather than religion versus science.

Those pioneering country communities often were

technologically backward compared to cities, through

no fault of theirs (Lilydale got clean drinking water

in .... 2013-14?!!!).

I would guess they were also culturally conservative?

Preoccupied with the demands of physical survival,

their religion was a consolation and explanation in the

face of the mystery of life and death and also a pre-

cious social venue? A respected Lilydale elder said to

me this year that there are only about six people

attending her regular Sunday service now where once

Lilydale filled four or so churches several times each

Sunday. I reckon we have entered a period of "to

each his own" in Australia - even in the bush -

although many are still fearful of the religions they do

not know and understand, like Islam, especially if the

trashy mass media get people worked up.

Any thoughts?
