"Riddle me this", said a man given to leapin gabout in green suits "but is A Grade a case o fthree standout teams and raffle the rest?"After the sheer debacle of last year' spredictions, I somewhat meekly give you mypre season ladder . . .1 . Old Xavs
This time last year, Travis Ruyg was judging
bikini contests with all the hungover
backpackers at the West London Wildcats .The gun on baller is back from the Old Dart,
along with premiership players Tim Clarke
and James Scanlan, as he chases his firstPremiership medallion after a ball breaking
ten GF losses throughout his career. James
McDonnell (overseas) and James Hawkins(retired) are gone but with Anthony
McDonald and Adrian Cox slotting in andRyan Colbert, Tristan Purss (both from the
bush) and Justin Arnold (DVFL) rounding
things out in the recruiting stakes, I reckonthey might just be a good thing . Mortgage thehouse .
2. Uni Blues
Surely not, you mutter. Well yes, Uni did
rewrite all the rules last year. They werestreets ahead of any other team, their
reserves had a percentage that resembled anIBF round at Muirfield Village, they had the
best coach (Kanis) the umpires' MVP
(Gleeson) and the Hoi Polloi's MVP (Young). But Young has been snapped up by the VFL
and maybe they're due for some misfortune
on the injury front . They're clearly the
benchmark but it'll be tougher at the top thisyear . They regain three star players from
years past in Liam Ryan, Rob Wilkie and
Andrew Henderson and say goodbye toMessrs Nailon, Brooke, Penny, Roydhouse
and Guengerich (all defenders significantly) .
3 . Old Scotch
"5% better in 2004" was the theme at Scotc h
2
last year but
unfortunately itseemed as if 95%of its list were
either nursing anailment or kicking back at the chalet . LikeXavs, they stormed home in the second halfof the season and they may have reallyshaken things up had they snuck into thefinals . And when you add Andrew Pugsley(Collingwood, Box Hill) and Luke Hawkins(Bendigo Bombers) to a forward linespearheaded by James Gertsman, everythingbegins to make sense . Danger team .4. Old Trinity
Trinity really gave it a nudge last year and
only an avalanche of goals from St Bernards' !.Dan Jordan denied them a grand final spot . ::Alistair Neville being snapped up by Box Hillwill leave a huge hole across half back but
they remain a solid, if unglamorous side .
Should be thereabouts .
5. St Kevins
Not long ago, SKOBS were the glamour teamof the VAFA with a young list bristling withtalent, guided by the most successful coachin the history of the comp . Without warning, everything went the way of the pear . A goodcoach, better luck with injuries and shrwedrecruiting has seen them climb back towhere they belong but the jury is still verymuch out. Still, McKee and Garlick are prettyhandy acquisitions and they could well bethe knockout team. Their only loss of note isJohn Rombotis, who has teamed up withJohn Newcombe and actor Grant Dodwell tocoach up Caroline Springs way .6 . MarcellinBernie Dinneen, the heart and soul ofMarcellin and probably their best ever player, has jumped ship and will play for Vermontthis year which is a bit like Sir Lawrence

0 THEAMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2Q05 7
Well the summer has gone and here we are
back at the coalface ready and primed for
another season of VAFA Football . In what has
been a somewhat long pre-season, game timeis now finally upon us and all the hopes and
aspirations for the season go on line today .
Welcome back to Whitefriars, De La Salle, and
MHSOB after 1 year absences and Caulfield
Grammarians make a welcome return to B
Grade after a long hiatus .
PREVIEW.De La Salle welcomes North Old Boys to the
expanses of Malvern. Both sides have kept
things pretty close to the chest over thesummer with the signing of Simon Minton-
Connell an obvious plus for the NOBS . If they
can get the ball down to him often enough
then they have to be some sort of chance .
Both clubs have lost a few but De La bloodeda lot of young players in the highest section
last year and it could be their experience from
that that gets them over the line today .
Old Essendon make the long trek across town
to tackle Old Brighton at the Beach Road
Oval . Without any shadow of a doubt both
were the disappointments of the 2004 season
and would be disappointed with their results .
Both have new Coaches in Greg McLoughlin
and ex VFL star in David Calthorpe and will
be looking for a good start to the new season .
Believe the practise match form of the
Tonners has been pretty good and that
combined with the huge home groundadvantage should see them over the line .
balance still of -~youth and .,experience to ge tover the line .Two of thereturnees clash out at Park Orchards . T1.
F riars are coming off a tough year that -riddled with injury, while the Fields despithe Grand Final loss earned promotion .
change of coach in January would not hahelped the cause, but Stevie Wright is
proven performer and brings plenty to it
club . Whitefriars possibly lost more games
home last year than in the club's history ai
will be looking to remedy that througho
2005 . It is still an awesome advantage an(
think they will win and make the Fields retu
an unhappy one .Unfurling the flag in front of a large eror
makes it a big day for MHSOB. The drums e
beating fairly strongly for the side in t
Brown and White from out in the Nor
Practise match form is excellent and a lossextra time in the last game they played mat
them my nominal flag favourite . But that dc
not mean that I am going to select them tod ;
MHSOB have not rested on their laurels h<
added more youth to an already talented lup and with the boost of the large parcel
crowd I'm going against the flow and tipp
the High to start the season with a win .

U19 Coach : Results or DevelopmentToday (46) U19 coaches will begin their seasonswith one thing in mind a premiership - or willthey?More recently the emphasis at U19 level in theVAFA has been that of development as opposed topremierships .Forty three clubs will provide U19 footballopportunities for young men, with Old Scotch,Rupertswood and De La Salle fielding second U19teams, in 2005 - not all will be successful in termsof winning the premiership, but how you definesuccess will go a long way to defining howsuccessful your team is .Is a premiership the be all and end all, or is yourmeasure of success having (x) amount of playersexposed to senior football across the season, orsimply fielding a competitive team each week? Ifyou haven't addressed this question yet withyourself and your players (collectively andindividually) - your planning is behind for season2005 .
Take the time to set realistic goals for your teamboth collectively and individually, for one player itmay be to play (x) amount of senior games, foranother it maybe learning how to play keyposition, and another to cement a regular spot inyour U19 team, while from a team perspective itmay well be to make the four, win all of yourgames at home or simply to be competitive eachweek - whatever the goals make them achievableand re-assess during the season, review and re-visit . Goals give the team focus throughout andgive you the ability to remind your team, andindividual players, of their own commitment andfocus for the season .While every one of the five sections will see teamscompete weekly and at the end of the home andaway season some twenty clubs will compete forthe ultimate prize of a premiership, along the waythere will be trials and tribulations, injuries, joy, exhilaration, thrashings and every bit of rawenergy will be expended, but for what.U19 team placings do not influence where seniorteams are graded in the VAFA .The VAFA U19 competition is an investment forthe future of VAFA clubs . U19 teams give clubsaccess to not only a group of players with whichthe future can be built on-field, but also off-field .Future club administrators, volunteers andsupport staff can also flow from the group of rawboned and enthusiastic individuals at your fingertips . They are a valuable resource, treat them assuch .
A .F.C. ((~~/'~1 V.A .F.A .
"Your Coaches' Association"
So as an U19 coach have you sat down with yourSenior Coach or Director of Coaching anddiscussed the pathway and strategies for thedevelopment of your group this season . If not, whynot ?For example have you discussed when and ifpossible U19 players will be trialed in the Seniorteam in 2005 .Trialing U19 players in the seniors has manypositive effects (and I'm talking about thoseplayers physically and mentally ready for therigors of senior football), (i) the players will beginto appreciate their own worth in their future at theclub, give them their first opportunity to playsenior football and not many future quality playersforget that experience - INVESTMENT, (ii) byproviding an opportunity for the players at seniorlevel, you are saying to the U19 players who maybe a year or two off playing senior football thatopportunities exist at your club to play in theSeniors - the pinnacle at every VAFA clubswhether A or D4 section - OPPORTUNITY and (iii)their youthful exuberance will challenge the seniorplayers in the team, enthusiasm is infectious, competition for spots is a challenge and whenchallenged regular senior players raise theirefforts, increasing their output and such theirworth to the team - CHALLENGING .Promoting U19 players into the senior team alsoneeds to be timed well . Robbing an U19 team ofkey players can decimate a side at underage level,a non-competitive side decreases player and teamconfidence and when this drops the reverse of theabove (3) positives begins to surface and U19teams suffer .There is no perfect recipe for success in promotingU19 players, many factors come into the equationfrom maturity (physically & mentally) of theplayers, to the timing of the match and oppositionin which he player is to be promoted - but restassured by doing so the long-term benefits faroutweigh any negatives .In conclusion we are asking all U19 coaches : haveyou set your goals for the coming season, or areyou taking it a week at a time, because failing toplan is preparing to fail, and good developmentcoaches are well planned and will continue to reapthe fruits of their labors for many years to come .All the very best for the coming season to you all -may you all achieve your goals .

by Glen Harrison
It's been 217 days since the last C Grade recruiting and th egame was played in anger and after yet return fromanother all conquering summer by our Aussie overseas of som ecricketing heroes, it's great to finally return to of their talente dthe real action and have the footy back .The HJ Stewart Cup is again up for grabs andthe 2005 season shapes up as the mostcompetitive of all of the amateur sections . Therewards for a successful year are plentifulwith promotion earning a berth in prestigiousB Grade, whilst relegation sees a club spiralinto the murkier waters of Dl .Two sides that recently waded through the
shadows of D1 and into the light of C Grade, are the all conquering undefeated Uni Blacksside of '04 and their fellow Grand Final
combatants, the Banyule Bears . Both will bekeen to continue their forward push for
higher honours .
Beaumaris and Old Paradians return to CGrade hostilities and no doubt each team will
be eager to follow the lead of last year'spremiers, MHSOB, who slipped down in '04,but regrouped quickly, to have the briefest of
stays .
The new lineups will not have it all their own
way, as six of 2004's C grade clubs also lookto earn themselves a Grand Final placing .
Monash Blues lead the marauding pack and
following their preliminary final loss to theUnicorns, will be looking to go one better in '05 .
The Parkdale Vultures who had been veryimpressive for much of last season lost their
way in the elimination final and will be keento atone .
Old Camberwell made a late surge for finals'glory, only to fall a little short and will behoping to cement a finals spot a little earlierthis time around .Hampton Rovers also pushed for Septemberaction, but last year's nine nine win lossrecord was not enough . Solid off-season
players will holdthem in good stead .Therry know if they can get their best teamon the paddock, the lads from Oak Park will
be more than competitive .
With an unavailable home ground, Ajax werethe traveling gypsies of 2004 . Having flirtedwith relegation, they will be difficult
t counter when they put their bodies on th eline and get their running game together.
PREVIEWWithout form to assist, Round 1 selections
are always a bit of a lottery and in mostinstances ; the final decision was made on the
fall of the coin .
Therry host Uni Blacks and whilst Oak Parkhas tripped up marry visiting teams, it won'tdeny a team that won 20 consecutive games
in 2004 .
Banyule make the long trek to Gerry Greenand the visitors who are notoriously slow
starters, will be the Vultures first victim .
Beaumaris have a difficult first up
assignment against the Blues and theStudents who always play their home ground
well, should win .
Hampton welcomes the Jackas as they did inthe corresponding fixture last season . As onthat occasion, it was victory to the Rovers andshould again be so today. The Wellers and Paradians complete theround and this may be the game of the week .
OC had many close matches last year andthis may be another where they just come out
ahead .

0 v 0Melbourne has had a sensational start to theseason and two former VAFA players havebeen leading lights . Cameron Bruce(MHSOB) an d James McDonald (Old Xavs)were the best two in the Dees victory onFriday night over Geelong . This followsBruce's BOG efforts in the first two matches .Maybe the retirement of Dr Don Cordner,VAFA's last Brownlow Medallist, couldcoincide with the next VAFA winner of thecoveted award .

VAFA congratulates former St Bede's playerand VAFA umpire Brad Hodge on hisselections on the recent tour of New Zealandand the upcoming Ashes tour of England .Brad began as a boundary umpire when just15 years of age and Brian "Benny"Goodman remembers Hodge as a "freshfaced, enthusiastic young lad" . How thingshave changed !

The threefold welcome to D1 for 2005 ; to the Vasilopoulos, &6 Clubs who survived the rigours of the Simon Wood !Section action in 2004; to Bullen- Glen Eira isTemplestowe & Old Carey, whose promotion determined t ocontinues their rivalry from last year ; and toEmmaus St Leos & Glen Eira, rebuildingfrom not such flash years in 2004 . For Gle
n Eira, it's been 40 years since their las tappearance in this section! And finishing
Ormond v Aquinaswith a little known fact, this scribe ha snever written about Emmaus in a season inwhich they did not win the Senior Flag!!! Wewill also watch with great interest thefortunes of our worthy 2004 GrandFinalists, Uni Blacks and Banyule, in thetough environs of C Section .
Have a fantastic year each and every!!
Previe w
Glen E ira v Old Carey meet for the firsttime in decades with both in rebuildingmode . Legendary Coach Terry Walsh hasreturned to Glen Eira in an effort to redirectits fortunes ; while Old Carey is reeling fromthe retirements of Club Legends CamCampbell, Matt Cohen, Nick Everett, CamMatthews, John Raftopoulos, Nick

status for 2006, and may have a slight edgeover the Old Carey Kindergartners at thisstage . The homes ide to win by a few points .
The Moods are quietly confident of beingthere for finals action again and shouldhave an experience advantage over therejuvenating Bloods, who usually take a fewrounds for their cricketers to adjust to notwearing creams. Both sides will bethereabouts in August, but the Monds willtake today's contest by 4 goals .Emmaus St Leo's v Prahran
Demotion seems to bring out the best in theAnimals, and this game will indicate howgood that best wilI be . Prahran had a horroryear with injuries in 2004 and did damnedwell to avoid relegation themselves . BothClubs are cautiously optimistic . Being atBennettswood, the Animals should start theyear with a 3 goals victory ,

Old rdentonians v YarYa Valley
The Panthers have lost vast experiencewith the retirement of many veteranssuch as Adam Acreman and DrewSoliey, but hope to counter that withreams of enthusiastic cubs! They didwell in their pre-season games and
could surprise . Yarra Valley could
(should?) have seen finals action in2004 but for some unaccountablelapses, and they won't be far away
again in 2005 . The Bushrangers areone of the few sides not fussed by theenvirons of Keysborough Fields, but Ithink the Panthers young guns, boosted by the return of ChadTwentyman & Justin Vick will take outa top match by 4-5 points .
Bulleen Templestowe v Fitzroy Reds
Saving the best for last, this will be a
very good game . For starters theCoaches, Steve Easton & Graham
Burgen, have more moves than aContortionists College, and both teamscommence the year with substantiallythe sides that served them so well intheir respective finals campaigns last
season . The unfurling of their D2 Flagwill give the Bullants an added lift thatshould carry them to a 2 goals win .

In his editorial, CEO Phil Stevens, detaileda number of key points for the Millenniumseason . There was a new "heat policy", anextension of the "audible obscenity" rule forplayers who incur more than one "order -off'and an "All Star Team of the Year", to bechosen, based on weekly nominations . TheVAFA was at its progressive best !A Section scribe, Jason Frenkel, reportedthat the opening was a "bumper" round .Match of the week was between OldMelburnians and University Blues . At half
time the Blues held a 6 goal lead but tiredbadly and the OM's ran over the top, 14 .11
to 12.13 . The OM's were pleased with theeffort of Holmes in his battle with Blues' big
man. McLachlan and Mulligan and Brownealso satisfied the OM's camp . "A" Sectioncoaches were - Garry Connolly (Marcellin),Warren Fall (MHSOB), Kevin Tibaldi (OldIvanhoe), Neil Ross, (Melburnians),Brendan Mason (Old Scotch), Leigh Carlson(Old Trinity), Tim O'Shaughnessy (OldXavs), Gary Foulds (St Bernards), MikeMcArthur-Allen (St Kevins) and LeeAdamson (Uni Blues) .In B Section Whitefriars unfurled the 1999C Grade pennant and celebrated with astrong win over Mentonians, 14 .15 to 7 .10 .
Best players ; Carbone, Cunningham,Hilton, Hughes, Reidy (6) Pasqualotto,(W'Friars) and Newton, Kitto, Flaskis,Katris, Cozens, Campbell (Mentonians) .In C Section, the two promoted teams,AJAX and Bulleen /Templestowe, were bothsoundly beaten by Old Geelong and GlenEira respectively . Beaumaris, who had beenrelegated from B Section, announced theirintentions with a huge result, 30 .15 toIvanhoe /Assumptions 13 .16 .D1 Section's Aquinas Old Collegians hadbeen: middle of the road in the previousseason but launched their new season with
a massive 34.17 toOakleigh's 10 .10 .Thomas with 8goals and Cultrer
a with 7 were th eguns up forwar
d for Aquinas.Peninsula Old Boys went straight to the topof the D2 Section ladder after they disposedof Parkside 16 .7 to 6.13. We welcomed new clubs and teams to thecompetition - Beaumaris (seniors, reserves& U19's), Warringal (a new "composite" U19team), Swinburne Institute and HawthornCitizens (new Club 18 teams) . Eltham madethe transition from Club 18 to senior ranks .
In "A" Section the highly fancied OldXaverians, under new coach, formerRichmond great Barry Richardson, hostedOrmond, tipped by scribe Don Blackwood tobe facing a tough season. Somewhatsurprisingly Ormond held a 4 goal lead atthe main break and increased it slightly bythree quarter time. The Xavs rallied, had
most of the play in the final term butOrmond, led by captain Brett Connell ,
34 0 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2005
played possession football in the finalminutes to finish in front, 12.7 to 10 .15 .
The Monds had made an early seasonstatement to say they were not finished yet!Best for Ormond - Sebo, McConville,
Kenrick (4) and Fraser. For the Xavs
Landrigan, Bourke, Tapping and Mollard .
In B Section, Old Haileybury, still smartingfrom their relegation from A Grade, pounded Old Mentonians 22 .7 to 12 .14 at
McKinnon . Best for OH - Armstrong, Morey(5), Kirkwood-Scott and McKenzie . For
Mentonians - Brooks, Davis, Dart and
Carter.Monash Blues were big winners over StBedes Mentone Tigers in C Section . The
Blues kicked away in the first term with 7goals to 3 and continued on their merry wayas Leigh Baring (4) and Dan Carman (5)provided headaches for the Tigers'
defenders . Other good players for the Blueswere Logan, White and Hipwell while Bilos,Diggins, McGraw and Parsons deservedplaudits from the St Bedes matchcommittee for sticking to their tasks .
I(:
,__._ - -_ill A Section Collegians went straight to
the top of the ladder with a resoundingvictory at Old Xavs' expense, 21 .12 to
7 .11 Hinchen, Cook Schmidt (3), Tregear,Bennett and Baum (4) were strong for the
Lions . Curtain (3), Trainor, Ryan, Klein,Godsell and Carlin did their best for the
Xavs .North Old Boys were also very impressiveand their 13 .11 overwhelmed De La Sallewho could only muster 4 .12. PaulConsidine (4), Busutill, Conti, O'Rourke,Lynch and Dore pleased NOBS' coachJim Durnan who was delighted with thegreat start to the season . For De La Salle, centre half back Mick Deveson did all hecould and the margin could have beenconsiderably more had he not defendedso stoutly. Cooke, Harrington,Holdsworth, Bromley and Anderson werethe best of the rest .
The tribunal had a very busy start beforeround one with no less than 14 playerssuspended for indiscretions in thepractice matches . Unfortunately thetrend continued with 19 playerssuspended during round one .Bob Green played his 300th game duringround one. Bob started with Parkside in1966 and was lured to West Brunswickthe following season . Bob was an
excellent contributor on and off the fieldand had already been awarded lifemembership by his club .
In A Section Ormond opened their seasonpositively and avenged their defeat in the1974 Grand Final when they accounted
for Uni Blacks . Their 8 goals straight in
the third quarter turned the gamearound completely . Best for Ormondwere the dashing Alan Graham (4), BruceBourne (1984 VAFA player of the year) .
Russ, Buckley, Thomas and Naylor also
providing great drive . Simon Costello was
the Blacks' best and was supported byHolmes, Perrett, Burne, Pascoe and Tony
Costello .In B Section Old Scotch ran over the topof Old Carey 17 .10 to 7 .10 . The
Scotchies' best were Morgan (7),Molyneaux, Alder, J Marx, Tallent andAnderson (3) . Old Carey's best wereclearly Yeo, Constable, R Cooke, Freemanand Morrison .Old Brighton comfortably defeated

35() THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2005
Welcome to season 2005!Having been promoted (with my belovedWestbourne) from the scribe's job in D4 lastseason, I am looking forward to penning myviews on what should be a very tightly foughtdivision . Having spoken to most clubs I havemanaged to form some thoughts on what Ibelieve will transpire over the season, and haveput these into my 2005 preview.2005 PreviewWest Brunswic kHaving come down from D2 last season, the
Westies have been dealt another blow losingthree stars including three-time comp B&F
Adam Cannane to overseas work commitments .
However, gun recruits Donik Manoulkian, whowill provide plenty of zip from the half back lineand bollocking forward pocket Brendan Hogan
should fill this void somewhat . Coach Angus
"Hamma" Hamilton said that he "was taking it
one week at a time" and would be "hoping to
give a good, honest account of themselves"when asked about their prospects . A top four
finish is not out of the question .
South Melbourne Dist rict sWord in D3 circles is that the Districts are a bigchance to take out the flag this season . Pre-
season has been very exciting and althoughthey lost a few of their experienced players from
last year, a number of pick ups have shown
good form early . Included in there is a "big bush
recruit, a couple of players coming down from
the D2 comp and some talented and skilful
young ex-U19's" . Judging from the mail, I am
expecting a top four finish by the team .
Old WestbourneThe Warriors, fresh from their thumping 2004premiership season where they lost only onematch for the season have all the momentumgoing into 2005 . However, the loss of fourexperienced players from the premiership sidemay put a dent in coach Jeff Wilson's plans .Word from the club is that players such as
"Fish" Whiting andAdam Mokrusch are
the up-and-comers
expected to fill that void and a finals place willnot be out of the question, though a mid table
finish is most likely .
UHS-VUThe students have lost much of their side fromlast season with a staggering ten playersheading off overseas and also severalretirements . However, in their place, quite a fewyoungsters have filled the void with "severalexciting pickups" . Another positive is the fitnessof Cracknell who is promising to have a big2005 . Given their consolidation season in 2004,the students will have their eyes firmly placedon a top two finish in 2005 and I think they maybe a good thing this year .WerribeeHaving staved off relegation last season by theskin of their teeth, it will be a desperate Tigers
outfit taking to the field in 2005 . An influx of
talented youngsters have begun to filter
through from their successful U/ 19's team, andled by Daniel Lee and Matt Palmington it is
expected that the pace of the Werribee outfit will
be increased significantly. The return of some
long term injured players to the fore adds to the
positive signs . However, to me I believe this will
be a tough year for the Tigers who will need to
win some close ones to stave off relegation .
KewI tried hard to contact someone from Kew but to
no avail . As such I can only go on what I saw
last year, and on that I think Kew will be
competitive . A lot will depend on whether they
can win the close ones, however, my guess is a
7-10 finish is on the cards for the Browns .
Syndal Tally H oTraining since January, the Hoers have hadconsistent numbers on the track throughoutpreseason . Newly appointed Senior Coach TonyRowe has had his work cut out for him with a
36 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 200 E
number of senior players departing from lastseason, and has brought many new players to,the club with him . Competitive in their practicematches, I am expecting them to be thereaboutscome finals time with a 4-6 finish most likely .
Monash GryphonsDespite the Gryphons disbanding their Club 18
team after only one season, and losing several
players as a consequence, the club hasmanaged to pick up a number of players
primarily from the university . One of the stars
of D3, Adrian Flowerday, will be a big part of
any success the Gryphons should experience
and along with the steadying influence ofveteran Lee Wells, and the mercurial talents ofChris Leeton, I am expecting a 6-8 finish for the
club.
St.Johns OC
St .Johns, after a third placed finish in 2005 are
expected to give the flag a real shake, however, the preseason has not been all that coach Ben
McGee would have planned . A number of his
gun players such as 2004 sharp shooter Chris
Horbury have yet to commit and as such
predicting how their season will transpire is a
difficult task . Positives have been the great form
of youngsters such as Diaz and Arnold who areexpected to be stars of D3 this year. None the
less, I believe that they start the season aspremiership favourites -despite their early
setbacks .
Power HouseAfter yet another long pre-season PHFC has hadsome mixed results in their 3 practice matches .New club Captain and 2004 B&F winner, MattHill is expected the lead from the front whileNick Bishop, Matt Taylor, Ben Reardon and RobWalsh should also be good players for PowerHouse this year . In an even competition I believea finals berth is unlikely with a 5-8 finish on thecards .Round 1 PreviewWest Brunswick v Power HouseThe Westies have many D3 pundits placingthem in the top three although the clubcontinues to play down their chances . On theflip side, Power House would be hoping to get offto the flyer they did last season . For me it isWest Brunswick though to win at home by 32points .South Melb Dist v St JohnsSt .Johns have not had the pre-season theywould have liked, while South Melbourneappear to be on track for a good year. The wide
ses of Elsternwick Park ~s*ill test the pre-son work of both clubs and I am expecting
some tired legs at the end of the day. Picking awinner is tough, but I think I will go with 2004form and pick St .Johns to win by 11 points .Old Westbourne v Monash G ryphon sThe Gryphons travel to Artie Park in what willbecome one of the dreaded road trips of 2005 .The Warriors will still be flying after the club'stwo premierships last year as they meet one ofthe other D3 newcomers . Westbourne arealways tough to beat at home, and today will beno exception as they open their account todaywith a 32-point win .UHS-VU v Syndal Tally H oThe students promise to be a good side this yearwith an abundance of talent and experiencethroughout the club . Syndal are also lookinggood and could surprise . This match will helpus assess just how good UHS are, and inpicking my winner I am going with them toimpress with a 26 point win .Werribee v Ke wMy early thoughts have been that both theseteams may struggle in 2005 and therefore it is
supremely important that they open their
accounts in today's match . The young Werribee
side is full of promise and their run on the largeTiger's Den will make the going tough for Kew .
In what I believe will be a close encounter, I
believe Werribee will have the legs to outlastKew to open the season with a win by 9 points .
Press Correspondent sIf you want your team and players mentioned inmy column, I am only too happy to oblige .However, I must get your reports into me bymidday on Monday at the latest . Please alsoinclude your nomination for the player of theround. 0 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2005 39
The finest ruckman of the modern era, a nomadic goalkicking machine, a Carlton premiership winner withgammy knees, one of the most respected AFL coachesof all time and even a former world championshiprower are welcomed into the amateur fold as season
2005 dawns today .
After a string of cameo coaching roles in the AFL,Simon Madden has finally taken the plunge as asenior coach and will guide St Bernards this year.
Despite his acquisition and a multi million-dollarupgrade to the facilities at West Essendon . one
problem remains : almost every player with a smidgenof talent has flown the coop leaving the formerBomber with a Himalayan task . Still, if any team iscapable of proving doomsayers wrong, it is St
Bernards . Indeed, this very u7iter dismissed them asrelegation certainties this time last year, only to hailthem as flag favourites a month later! Bernards'
President Peter O'Connor said this week . "Simon is
doing a great job with the boys but we are hopefulrather than confident at this stage" .
Other former AFL identities who will chance their luckin the coaching stakes today include Barry
Richardson (Old Xavs) . Dean Rice (Old Melburnians)
and Steven Wright (Caulfield Grammarians) while
Adrian Cox and Anthony McDonald (Old Xavs),
Steven McKee and Simon Garlick (St Kevins) and
Luke Beveridge (St Bedes Mentone Tigers) should
spice things up in the playing ranks . Scotch's
Cameron McKenzie -Ntcliarg may not have an AFLpedigree but the experience of rowing in theAustralian Eight at the World Championships shouldhold him in good stead for the rigours of A Gradefootball . As always, a host of players have crossedover from suburban and country teams to experiencefootball, VAFA style
Heaven help those B Grade full backs who will acquit
themselves against one S Minton Connell this
season . The canny chest mark specialist seems tohave played at every club in Australia during thecourse of his career but despite his nomadic naturethere is one recurring theme, stacks of goals .
Business commitments will restrict him in terms ofgame time but on the back of countless 100 goal +seasons, he should prove a boon for North Old Boys, one of the proudest and most unique clubs inamateur football .
As the IIni Blues proved emphatically last year
however, former AFL players are by no means a pre-requisite for success . Indeed, common sense dictates
that all eyes will be planted on the Melbourne Uniclubs as we head into season 2005 . Jock Nelson,
arguably the most decorated amateur player of alltime with 5 competition best and fairests, says thatthe Blues exhibited the "most awesome display ofhard running I have seen in fifty years of watchingamateur football" and it's hard to disagree .
In many ways, their siick, free flowing, handballorientated style of play epitomised the differencebetween our competition and other local leagueswhich are characterized by more physical, one on onefootball .
Sintilarlv, their D Grade cousins Uni Blacks rew-rote
all the rules last year by totally dominating their
section . With David Parkin operating as a -coachingadviser and high performance playing mentor" and asmattering of ex AFL players engaged, it would be abrave person who would tip against them doing the
double. They have won more A Grade flags than anyother club and are the third oldest football club in
Australia . behind Melbourne and Geelong.
Like the Blacks, Fitzroy Reds and CaulfieldGrammarians loom as the sleeping giants who arelooking to rise through the grades in years to come .With a nod to their former affiliate Uni Reds, FitzroyReds will celebrate their fiftieth anniversary this year .In 1998, they made the decision to adopt the FitzroyFootball Club colours, theme song and former homeground and with one of the largest supporter bases inthe amateurs, they look poised to challenge thedominance of Old Boy and University clubs .
A decade ago, Caulfield were languishing in E Grade, despite having a strong feeder school . The retention of
senior players and a policy of taking on former AFLstars as coach has propelled them to B Grade . As
their lst round opponents Whitefriars could wellattest however, going from E to A is hard enough, entrenching yourself in the premier grade is nigh on
impossible .
Whatever the case, the competition has never beenstronger and the future looks bright . I hope your team
gets off to a great start today .

7 WE USE by Steve McCarthy
& Leah Gallagher
Here we go again!Well, the celebrations of the festive season were welland truly over and that Christmas "excess baggage"
began to shed when our new Fitness Advisor Rob
Sneddon took control of us on that first official night
of pre-season training in February . Some umpires
had obviously been doing a fair bit of work over thesummer, whilst a few looked like they'd "swallowed
the furniture" . New umpires received a great initiationto the rigours of VAFA umpiring, by week two we'd
only scared off a couple . A few retirements as usual,
but this year we've topped-up to a pretty reasonable
level. Second year Advisor (now full-time Umpire
Operations Manager, Brian (Benny) Goodman) islicking his lips with the prospect of being able toappoint two field umpires in each game . Umpires over
40 are pretty happy about that too! Run well thisweekend, and let's look forward to a successful 2005 .
Welcom eA big welcome to 2005's new recruits . Welcome back
to former VAFA umpires - Cameron Stewart, Nathan
Carlyon, Robert Sneddon, Nick Fennessy and
Justin Lipson. To the new field umpires who'vechanged careers - Nick Keating, Alex Maggio,
Michael Ryde and Paul Tyrer from the boundary and
Matthew Simpson from the goals (will Matt get theBlue 18 shirt under the father-son rule?) Other new
names include - Steve Castersen, Lee Crossley,
Daniel Siifo, Shaun Brailsford, Russell Davidson,Bob Kaindl, Robert O'Gorman, Paul O'Loughlin,
John Hughan, David Longworth, Danny Trott,Mark Farrell, Jon Kerr, Dean Schwab, BrentWoodhead, Paul Brown, Nathan Sheppard, ShaneMcNamara, Danny Ewans, Vaughan Sidebottom,Rod Penaluna, David Anselmi, Ian Kennedy,Graeme Templer, Shane Mackintosh and Tom
Windlow . Hopefully all of these umpires will be outthere today representing the VAFAUA for the first
time . If we've left you out (or spelt your name wrong)just let us know during the week, we'd like to give
everyone a mention . Stay tuned for new boundary and
goal umpires .GoaliesCheck out the new look of the VAFA goal umpires
today. Does something look different? Good to see

PreviewThe planning, brainstorming, recruiting and al lother processes that dominate summer and pre-season will be forgotten as the 'real stuff begins inearnest . It is a great time of year, primarilybecause all teams are equal and thus expectationshigh . Unfortunately, a reality check will be put
into place by about 4.30pm Saturday afternoon asround 1 draws to a close .It is always important to remember however thatthe season is a long one and a loss in round 1 isno different to a loss in round 10 . Not the righttime for panic, at least not yet . And quick one toremember, the first runner out of the stadium inthe Olympic marathon has never been the firstone back to the stadium! !No form guide or round 1 thus we will have torevert to that tried and tested method, theAmateur grapevine . The one name that keepspopping is St . Mary's, a side desperately unlucky
not to get through to the Grand Final . Thegrapevine also suggests that Bulleen will be ableto continue their solid form of 2004 whilst one atlonger odds, namely Albert Park, has also been
the subject of some coat tugging in recent weeks .The loss of Mt Lilydale makes for an interestingsituation . Historically, the side demoted via asecond last finish start the year as strong
contenders. With the Lilydale crew regrouping forthe next 12 months, the incumbents in D4 won'tface the prospect of two teams coming down todominate . The other relegated side, Hawthorn was
fairly competitive last year and will be keen toreverse the trend of the past two seasons. As for D4 last year, it truly was a tale of twostories, namely the haves and the have nots. Thesides finishing 3-5 were part of s tong upperladder group whilst the sides finishing 6-10 werecompetitive amongst themselves but were nomatch for the top five . The gap was fairly large andthe five sides in question will have to do a lot ofwork to build the bridge. As for my top four, I think that St . Mary's,Bulleen and Elsternwick (always a strong and
proud club) andJ :rt Park tak e
my fancy withSt.Marv's andBulleen to play off.As for the league Best and Fairest, might take alittle liberty and reserve judgment for about 3
weeks as a quick refresher in the D4 stars isundertaken . Lauletta (H) and Allen (Albert Park)will fight out the goal kicking .guick preview for round 1 .Box Hill North host Albert Park. The Hillmenfinished off reasonable well last year however ifthe stories are true, Albert Park have had a greatpre-season and might be a little too good .Elsternwick welcome St Mary 's in this week's
match of the round . Despite thinking thatSt .MarY's will win it, fancy the Wicks homeground advantage might get them over the line .Richmond travel to N orth Brunswick with a win
fairly in mind . Richmond all got better as the yearwent on however the home ground advantagemight be too tough .Finally, Bulleen make the quick trip across to
Hawthorn . The Hawks might get better as theyear goes on whilst the Bulls might be a little bitmore settled and record a first up win .Eltham OC has the bye in Rd I .Press CorrespondentsLooking forward to getting all the informationfrom club scribes . Either email me oned,sill@locker .com.au or call on 0418348723 .Have a great year !

Amateur football returns to suburban Hey wher e
Melbourne this weekend after a fivemonth break, with ten sides set tocontest the 2005 Section One title .
Reigning premiers De La Salle kick offtheir 2005 campaign with an awayfixture against Uni Blues at CrawfordOval . Aiming to become only the eighth-team in Under-19 history to claim back-to-back JS McCann Cups, De La onceagain have the luxury of a large squadbase to choose from with more than fiftyplayers regularly attending training.
Managing to hang onto a largepercentage of last year's premiershipwinning side, the only hiccup in theside's preseason training has been theabsence of their coach David Madiganwho flies in from overseas on themorning of their first game . De La Salle
by 13 pts .
Section One runners-up St Kevins facea tough round one initiation thisweekend, playing host to Old Xaverians .
Former coach Owen Hourigan returnsfor his second stint with the St Kevins19s after coaching the side for three
seasons in the mid-nineties . Fielding ayounger side this weekend St Kevinswill go into the game as underdogs, alack of experience rather than skilllikely to be the determining factor. Old

In other games, Collegians receive aforfeit victory following the withdrawalof Werribee, St Bernards to rectify adisappointing 2004 with a round onewin over Marcellin, while Old Scotchshould get the four points at home toOld Brighton .
did thoselong, endless evenings at the beach go?You know - with a couple of stubbies ofCoopers' and a bag of Doritos & salsa
dip . . . . When were they replaced withtouch skills, running drills, tackle bags, weight circuits and 5 x 1 km time trials?
Beats me .
Welcome all to season 2005, and thehardest round in Victorian footy topredict, VAFA Under 19 round 1 . . . . . . .
Banyule -v- Old Carey will be a goodphysical affair with the home sideboasting some strong midfielders . Up asection in '05, I expect The OC to put ina good lst up performance, but theBears will prevail by 3 goals .
The Fields come down to meet the newly
promoted Friars . Daly should have anembarrassment of ex-schoolboy richesat his disposal . Forget the Form-guide
at here, the visitors should have enoughtalent to win by 15 points .
Good oil is the OMs are struggling fornumbers and this alone would put themon the back foot in round 1 . Facing the
Wellers, who were one win away fromSection 1 in 2004, means they couldn'thave a tougher initiation . Wellers by 12
goals .
The Sharks have been very quiet off-season, and I've little idea of their lead-up form. Naturally, I've got a better ideaof the T's, who have had the benefit of 3solid practice hit-outs against section 1teams . On that basis, I expect a tough 4goal away win .
Finally, Showdown III kicks off theseason out west where Rupo host th e
48 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2C
Bombers . Both teams finished poorlylast year, and will be keen to start well .Home side by 3 goals in a ripper.
Section 3Section 3 is basically an IntervarsityLeague this season, so we can expectsome interesting results 'round exam
time! !Nevertheless, the Trobers will be full of
confidence . They face-off against lastseason's disappointment, the Blacks, who should've nailed the premiership, and will hit the Main Oval at Bundoora
at 100mph . Blacks by 6 goals .
Whilst the seniors sides face off atSouth Yarra, the Hoers and Unicornslock horns at Chelsworth . Can't sayeither side impressed last year, but theHoers should enjoy the drop in a gradeto chalk up a solid 5 goal win .
Oakleigh will drive the team bus downWarrigal Rd where the Tigers lie in wait .I was on the Tigers' bandwagon earlylast season, but it ran out of gas . Thisyear will be different, so it's the homeside by 17 points today .
Have the all-conquering BentleighDemons managed to keep their sidetogether during summer? The Jackasimproved throughout the year, and willbe a tougher unit in '05 . However, the
Demons, with the home advantage, should win by 2 goals .
Spinner's boys couldn't have asked for abetter draw to start their new year inSection 3 . The Monash boys usuallytake time to 'gel' and, unless they'vechosen to recruit sooner, I expectanother slowish start . Raiders by 7goals .
Section Blue
Great to see Salesian Scorpions here in2005, but I'm expecting big things fromMick Oaten's boys, who will hit Kingo'sLounge for the club season opener with4 points tucked away . Ormond by 26points .
Fresh from an APS victory in '04, thenew Bloods should do serious damage .
They have the joy of playing on thepostage stamp McKinnon #2, which will
prove tough for visiting sides . I expect
the Pirates will return empty handed -
OH by 14 points .
Johnny Tapp used to say "Nodders -v-Rovers: harder to pick than a broken
nose" . I tossed the coin and it landedsideways . The crystal ball fogged up, soI turned to the tarot cards, and theysaid . . . . . . . . .Mazenod by 3 goals .
Last game sees Oakleigh Clays hostingDe La (2) . With plenty of boys looking toshow the coaches why they should'vebeen in the 1 sts, this will be a hum-dinger . De La Soul to play the first tunesof '05 with a tight 9 point victory .
Section Red
Reigning premiers Fitzroy will remain inSection Red after originally beingpromoted to Section Three . In all only
five of last year's sides are to return forthe new campaign, with newcomersKew and Old Scotch (2), as well asTherry Penola (3) and Emmaus St Leo's(Blue) all ready to challenge for the 2005
title .
After rewriting the under-nineteenhistory books with an undefeated 2004campaign, Fitzroy will aim to continuetheir run of consecutive victories whenthey face the second-string side fromOld Scotch . However the Reds, who likemost clubs have experienced amoderate turnover in player numbers, shouldn't underestimate the Scotchseconds given the depth of the club'ssquad base . Fitzroy by 19 pts .
Newcomers Kew return to under-nineteens competition after severalyears without a side, a strong affiliationwith the Kew Junior Football Club Coltsproviding sufficient numbers for a teamin 2005 . While the club will be hoping tobuild on a base for future years, coachMatthew Jack will optimistically be
() THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2005 49
aiming to become the first coach of anyKew U 19s side to win a premiership .
This weekend's initiation is as good asany, a home tie against Bulleen-Templestowe who rallied after adisappointing 2003 to finish mid-tablelast year . Bulleen-Templestowe by 3 pts .
In the round's other two fixtures, OldWestbourne to defeat Aquinas, andRupertswood to down Therry Penola ina thriller.

Round 1 200 51es it is that time of the year again when the all4 he players dust of their boots and head outn parkville for the first game of 2005 .
The season opens with Moonee Valley
Magpies playing Maribyrnong Bulldogs 2 . Yes
that is right the first game of the season is a
c lash of traditional rivals . Moonee Valley might
i tst get over the line in what should be a close
,,ucounter.he corresponding game on Oval 2 is between
Port Colts 2 and a new team Mazenod
Panthers from Oakleigh . Port Colts should be
,ble to use their experience to advantage but
\,; e wish the Panthers all of the best for the
;, < son and welcome them to the competition .
Tlic next game is between last years Division 1
premiers Ballam Park 1 and Broadmeadows 1
%0ho finished in the top four . Ballam Park
should win on form but we are sure that
l>roadmeadows have put in a big preseason
:uid should give a good account of themselves .
Po rt Colts 1 who played off in last year's
Ui~ ision 2 grand final play Bulleen
Templestowe . Our scouts have said that Port
! blcs have had a number of players retire an d
R.E . ROSST R U S T
O i HE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2005
this may prove to be the difference between thetwo sides with Bulleen Templestowe getting theideal start to 2005 .Ovens & Murray Jets 2 travel down thehighway to take on Broadmeadows 2 in thethird game of the day on Oval 1 . Going on lastyear's form Broadmeadows should be able tokick a wining score in what should be anentertaining game .Maribyrnong Bulldogs last year's Division 2
premiers take on Ballam Park 2 . This game
will be very close but may go to Maribyrnong
if they have kept their 2004 squad together .
Mambourin Tigers play Ovens & Murray
Jets 1 on Oval 1 . The Tigers are hoping to
emulate their name sakes in the A.F .L . and
come out in 2005 full of running. Ovens &
Murray 1 may have other ideas in a game that
is to close to call .
The final game for the day on Oval 2 is between
North Ballarat Knights and Parkside .Parkside from all reports have lost a number of
players from 2004 and may find it hard to
defeat the Knights who are an experienced
combination .
The executive wishes all of the teams andofficials the best of luck for season 2005.

Winning EdgePresentations
by Nc, r-, Nugen t
The successful format of previousseasons continues with twenty nineteams divided into three sections . Theannual change of team participation hascontinued with the loss of an Old Scotchside and Monash Gryphons . Into thecompetition comes another Fitzroy Redsside and Mt Lilydale return after aseason in F Section (1999) and ourseasons in D4 Section and one in D3 .
Another successful season is anticipatedespecially at this time of optimism wheneach club is sure it will experiencepremiership glory on the third Sunday in
August!! !
Preview of Round 1 .
Section 1
St Kevins, hoping for more success thanin 2004, host reigning premiers, OldXaverians, who have past . Why should2005 be any different? It's Old Xaveriansfor me !
Runners up Mazenod play host to MtLilydale . In 2004 Mazenod were a verysuccessful combination who should beable to win today. Mt Lilydale are an
unknown quantity. Their loss of players
must have an effect on their standard ofperformance although they have atremendous advantage when they play at
home. Mazenod should win narrowly .
Old Melburnians, newly promoted, andwith many new faces meet Prahran, whose abnormal pre season training
made the news. Personnel changes atPrahran, will give the "Two Blues" a
changed look. Without any knowledge ofwho-will take the field, I lean to Prahranto take the points as their experience
should carrythem to victory .
Old Scotchfollowing thei rsuccess last season play Old Brighton, who did not achieve their usual degree ofsuccess last season. The younger OldScotch team is my selection because theOld Brighton players may take a while toadjust to their new coaching regime .
University Blues will unfurl theirpennant before facing De La Salle, whomissed the finals last year for the first
time in seven seasons . I know many ofthe premiership team have left the Blues, who have moved up in standard .However I select them to win to showthey will be serious contenders in the
section .
Section 2Marcellin, who will appreciate theirparticipation in this section, host FitzroyReds, who have been finalists in the pasttwo years . I favour Fitzroy Reds as I fancytheir depth of talent will give themsuperiority over Marcellin .
Collegians should be able to defeatUniversity Blacks on the new Harry TrottOval . University teams are notoriouslyslow starters and those Club XVIIIplayers who played against OldParadians on March 19 certainly willneed the run today.
Old Xaverians, who were leading as thefinal 2004 siren sounded, play TherryPenola today. The Xaverians are myselection as Bob's Therry Penola playerstend only to be "Lyons" at home .
Old Essendon are at home to las t
60 0 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 20(
season's runner's up Old Trinity at East
i ;eilor. Old Essendon, who struggled lastseason, will appreciate their movementto Section 2 . However Old Trinity willprove worthy opponents . At home, Ifavour Old Essendon to win by a small
margin .
Eley Park or the Box Hill Sharks, havegained "bite" through judiciousrecruiting, according to my sources .They do face a difficult game first up atMonash where the "Blues" are alwayshard to defeat . Early in the season is themost vulnerable time for University sidesand so I select the Sharks to win first up .
Section 3
Old Scotch, should be able to defeat theyoung La Trobe University side at StJames Park . As many of the La Trobeplayers are coming from the Under 19s, Ifeel the more experienced Old Scotchplayers will triumph .
Caulfield Grammarians, in their secondseason, are at home to Whitefriars, whodisappointed last season . Availability ofplayers is an unknown and my selectionof Whitefriars is purely a hunch based onthe fact that they will field the moreexperienced players.
Newcomers Fitzroy Reds are anunknown quantity, who will face toughopposition from Emmaus - St Leos .Given Emmaus - St Leos were finalistslast season, I suggest they will defeat theFitzroy Reds .
North Old Boys, under the astute11~adership of veteran Damian Cerini~lzould prove too strong for Old Geelong, whose form over many seasons has beenerratic .
Old Carey has the bye due to St .Bernards OC recent withdrawal .
