In first round matches (home and away matches)u,f~ visiting team must wear an alternative jumper tottic one normally worn which is to be submitted to the;,-aciation at least 14 days before the scheduledn,au h for approval . If this procedure is not adhered toill (ii the VAFA will nominate the jumper to be worn byltw visiting team.

For finals matches the old rule has been changed .

Do you know what the jumper clash rule for finalsmatches is for 1997 on? See this column next week forthe answer.Keeping the eye on the ball .

I was interested to read in last Saturda_v s Age thatCariton coach David Parkin has called for the AFL totake action against players who interfere with playersbehind the play and off the ball. The VAFA two years

ago invoked its harassment policy where we called on

our umpires to takeout measures toensure that thes enegating tactics didn't PHIL STEVENScause a blot on our CHIEF EXECUTIVEgame . With this aim inmind the following is to OFFICER

be implemented byumpires :a) No player is to impede the path, touch or harass

an opposition player when the ball is outside 5metres

b) When an act of harassment occurs one of the fieldumpires must award a free kick without a warn-

ing.c) The free is to be given even if it is by the second

umpire who does not have control at that moment.d) If the same player repeats an act of harassmen t

that player is immediately to be reported and

ordered off.e) The report shall be for misconduct in that the

palyer committed a breach of the laws against an

opponent in a deliberate and violent manner .Goal and boundary umpires are to inform the fieldumpires at the next break in play ( after a score, after a goal,

A SECTIONby Jason Frenke l

he gods of weather shone favourably on Amateurfootball for the second consecutive week, as

teams relish in the dry conditions that denote theearly rounds of the season. Enjoy it while it lasts - thebig wet is only ever a week away! .

Four teams remain undefeated after two rounds -last year's grand finalists have both opened up sea-son 1997 with a strong performances, while OldScotch and Old Haileybu ry try to take the next stepafter missing out in 1996.

Parade an d OM's make up the middle - inaccu-rate kicking cost the latter last week while the formermanaged to sneak in their first win against a fast fin-ishing Bernards .

And what a trying start to the season for GarryFoulds and the Bernards crew - dumped by Xavs inthe first round only to come up and lose a close onethe following week - they will face an uphill battle toturn the season around from here.REVIEW

The ball hadn't been bounced at Tucker Roadwhen the Bloods posted their first major from aninfringement . It was not necessarily a sign of thingsto come either because it was the Redlegs who start-ed well, controlling the flow of play with fluency . Butmuch to the despair of Michael Ford, OM's failed tocapitalise on their dominance, and at half time led byjust 1 I points . It was a different story after half time,as Dowsing, Morey, the Walden brothers an d DavidConnell all lifted a notch to help the Bloods edge infront, before a tense final quarter. Micah Berry gavethe Redlegs a chance in the last term while Stuckey,Ross and Ellinghaus all played well . Melburniansfinished with 32 scoring shots to 21 and lost by 9points . Bottom line: Bad kicking is bad football .

Trinity hosted the Lions and started well to belevel at quarter time, before the superiority ofCollegians' running players started to control thegame. The second quarter proved to be costly forTrinity : they were outscored 4 goals to 1 and thenrecovered to match it with the Lions in the tworemaining quarters . Sloppy play resulted inturnovers, and the experienced Danny Thomsonswooped in for three goals, while Tony Parkin,James Bennett and Ch ristian Davidson were alsostrong performers . Robert Phillips booted threegoals for the home side and Malcolm Cumming wasin good form while the likes of Dal rymple, Glass andTaylor can always be counted on for a good game .But Bernie Dunn won't be pleased with an 0-2 startto the season .

And neither will University Blues coach MaryTyquin . The Blues were lack-lustre in Round 1 andstarted slowly at home to Xavs before getting backinto the contest before half-time . Bourke an d Jone s2

combined well againfor Xavs kicking ninegoals between them,while Tim Ockleshawand Dermott Dann chipped in with four, while AdiLennen booted 5 for the Blues . Xavs kicked awavthe third quarter to a commanding 46 point lead tUniversity, to its credit, played a strong last quarto reduce the margin, with Fairbank, MclntyMeade and Bolton all playing well, while Wood aHawkins continue their good form for the premier ;

Old Scotch never looked in trouble away to DeSalle ; inaccurate kicking prevented them from wining by a greater margin against a persistent oppotion . Phil Brasher and Drew Jackson played sogames again, as did Matt Chun to help De La staytouch, after Scotch booted 7 .7 in a good second qu~ter. Justin Hosking an d Kalinski booted four apiefor the Cardinals and Aujurd kicked 3, while the likof Stuart Steele, Ken Stokes, Phil Goldberg aJeremy Laird helped Scotch to a 2-0 start to the s eson . Wayne Harmes' charges looking good early.

St Bern ards gave an early indication of thingscome at home to Parade with a poor return of 1 .5the first term . Steve Perrett, Paul Capes and BeChatfield lifted the side in the second term butpoor third quarter saw the home side down by thrigoals at the last change . Boyd, Ciavola an d Panna ;were among the goals again for Parade, whiBrabender and Dallas played well for the secorstraight week, but they nearly lost when Bernarcmade a belated recovery in the last quarter .

T added 5.7 and fell short by two points: inaccura cproving costly yet again .TODAY'S GAMES

Do-or-die at Elsternwick Park today as Bernardbattle with Blues. One side will notch up the first wifor the season ; the other could be commended to thdoldrums for 1997 . University by 21 .

Trinity visit ladder leader Old Xaveri ans for thethird straight encounter with a top side and will strugglto match it with the reigning A-grade premiers. Old Xavby 32 .

Struggling De La Salle visit with Lion's den aHarry Trott to take on Collegians . The homeside havtoo many class players all over the ground, anshould win comfortably. Collegians by 61 .

Third plays fourth in the match of the round aCamberwell today as one of Old Scotch an d OhHaileybury will suffer their first defeat. The CardinaLshould creep over the line in a close on by 12 point s

Interesting clash at Elsternwick tomorrow as tRedlegs take on Parade . OM's will be keen to at

o for last week's one-that-got-away and should be to (strong by 28 points .

B SECTIONby Terry Quirk

;r~ound 2 saw victories in all games by substan-Jiti~tial margins ranging from 44 points to 87points . At B righton the home side was on targetwith 12 goals 2 behinds in the third quarter whilstMHSOB after a 20 point deficit at quarter timescored 19 goals to the Nodders 4 majors in the lastthree quarters to win the day by 74 points .Ormond gave notice of its intentions with a hardfought and serviceable performance againstTherry Penola . Ivanhoe kept in touch with thefour with a great second half against Banyule . TheBears were unfortunate to lose a few key playersthrough injury, but Ivanhoe lifted remarkably tooverwhelm the home side . Old Ivanhoe had 11individual goal kickers as they destroyed theSaints. A third quarter fight back by the Saintsyielded only 4 goals from 12 scoring shots as OldIvanhoe continued to build on its lead .

Today the four sides at the top of the ladderclash in matches that will not only sort out themen from the boys but will give all coaches, selec-tors and supporters a better idea regarding 1997expectations. These matches will decide on theearly trendsetter(s) in B Section, the winningteams then becoming targets for the lower teamsover the next few weeks .

Old Ivanhoe established control of the gameagainst St Kilda South Caulfield, keeping theSaints goalless in the first quarter, Stewart andMcLean were on fire for Old Ivanhoe up forwardwith Veal and Hempstead being rock solid indefence . The Saints lost three top players beforethe first bounce and did not have the manpower tocompete with the OIG's runners . Paul Clementsat CHB was solid whilst Kallis, Green andGilmore were better performers on the day.

MHSOB, after a slow start, absolutely blitzedMazenod in a one-sided affair. "Super" Bamerswas a sensation on the wing whilst "Genuine"Dixon marked everything. Dan Woodley ( 6 goals)was in fine form whilst Young "Man" in defencewas very solid . Again, Dean Schofield (rover),Mick O'Hara (ruck) and Damien Sherlock (HFF)were better players for Mazenod who may be verykeen to return to the wide spaces of CentralReserve.

Old Brighton had a percentage boosting winagainst St Kevins after a very even first half .Murch, Perry , McLachlan and Jaekson kicked 19goals between them with Reid and Farrell indefence continually pushing the ball forward .

Olive and Macey didwell for SKOBS inthe ruck whilstSmith and Ryan (6goals) were fine performers .

At Ivanhoe Park, Ivanhoe accountedBanyule after being buoyed by the inclusionseveral recruits after the granting of perm :Chris Tucker (ruck), Mark Scuderi, JanLynch and Peter Flynn were fine performers iivery even side . Banyule could not compete wthe Ivanhoe runners after half time . It was leftRory Cullen (full back), O'Brien, Egan and Jo;Turnbull (6 goals) to attempt to reverse the ticThe loss of Renato Dintinosante through injuin the third quarter was a disaster for the Bear ,

At Oak Park, Therry Penola could not pertrate the solid Ormond defence led by MaGilmore, Steve James and Michael ShepherPaul McDonald (ruck) gave Ormond enormoidrive . Therry made a move in the third quarter asreduced the deficit to 21 points at the last changBest for Therry Penola were Crockford, PetrevslsCart er and Seymour . Therrywill need to combirbetter in the coming weeks to record an overdi .win .My selections for Round 3 . . .

Old Ivanhoe will find MHSOB a huge task. ThGrammarians would normally be certainties otheir home turf but I'll select the High School boyby 27 points .

Mazenod at home will be in for a tougencounter against Therry Penola . Whilst fortsuggests the Nodders, I predict the Therry Penolboys will improve and win the day by 14 points .

Ormond versus Old Brighton will be the highlight of the round . The home ground advantagiand the solid defence of Ormond should win tinday by 24 points .

SKOBS take on the improving Banyule, I'll prediet St Kevins victory by 22 points in a match thaimay provide the shock of the round .~ St Kilda South Caulfield will be in for a battleagainst Ivanhoe who should show its class andprevail by 39 points .

Reserves: MHSOB, Mazenod . Old Brighton, StKevins and Ivanhoe .

Correspondents : By 5pm Monday, fax 98899014 . Thanks for the comprehensive reports todate .

We now have three undefeated teams, all with quitelarge percentages, and three teams yet to recor d

their first win . I think a couple of them should open theiraccounts while one will fall right away from the field, anda face a long season .Review.

Marcell in travelled to Thomastown in an effort torecord their first 2-0 start for many years, and after astruggle they came out on top to the tune of 22 points .Conditions were very dry and hard, and Marcellin wasthe first to settle, kicking the first two goals . The Eagleswere getting a lot of thrust off their half back line andlinked well through the centre . The second quarter was adogged contest with no team able to break clear . TheBears brains trust worked on how to contain the Eaglesforward Treganowan, and settled on crowding the back-line, it seemed to work and they were down by only 10points at the main break . The game intensified in thesecond half and scores were level at three quarter time .Marcellin managed to maintain possession in the lastquarter by winning nearly every centre clearance andsnuck home for a good win . Cox and Chambers weregood in the middle for the Eagles, whilst Plant an dRistevski worked hard for the very competitive Bears .

At Bulleen, a fired up Bu lleen/Templestowe took ona confident St .Bedes/Mentone side in what was a mustwin for the Bullants . The opening quarter was a good onefor both sides, with high intensity both managed to kickgoals, but it was the Tigers by 2 goals at the beak. Threegoals each in the second quarter saw the margin remainclose, but the Tigers had more use of the ball and werecarrying some momentum into the second half. TheBullants tried valiantly to stay in the contest, but werestruggling through the middle where the Tigers were justa bit more clean with ball harAdling, and their linkagewas, at times perfect, Six goals to two in the second halfgave the game to the Tigers by 45 points . Strong for theTigers were Tully and Thompson who managed to givethe Tigers a lot of push into a well organised fonvard linethat converted well . Smith worked hard for the Bullants,as did Robo around the ground . The Tigers look good andtoday's clash against Marcellin will be a good test .

At Keysborough . Old Mentonians kicked 9 goals inthe first quarter to kill off St Leos Emmaus and run outeventual 48 point winners. In perfect conditions thePanthers came out breathing fire after the previousweeks defeat and fed their multi pronged attack con-stantly to hold a 6 goal lead at quarter time . The secondterm was more even, but St Leos could not manage tobridge the gap. The Panthers took over in the third stan-za and went in to the orange break with a ten goal lead,St Leos remained competitive in the last term andoutscored the Panthers four goals to two, but it wasnever going to be enough. Acreman was the Panthersmajor contributor with 7 goals, whilst Richard Large

took over in the ruckand fed the small menwith east . For the TwoBlues MeKenzie,Burgess and Darcy battled hard all day . It was awin for the Panthers who are surely better than theuvious weeks effort, and for St Leo's, competitivEshould keep them going.

The Monash Blues travelled to Bluff Road to talHampton Rovers, both sides looking to openaccounts for the year. It was always going to be aone, and on a perfect footballing day, the Monashmanaged to hold out a fast finishing Hampton Rovewin by 7 points . The Blues managed to squander ropportunities in front of goal which almost let the Riin, but possession of the pill got them over the lineword from the Uni was that they were very happy tthe first win under their belts and will now look tosolidate. For the winners Stu McClure played wellhauled in close to 20 marks, whilst Webster snagfbag of goals . The Rovers should really look to this

,to get on the board when they take on an undermaiAjax, or they could be staring a lot of losses in the I

Out at Brunswick, Ajax turned up but forgot tofirst half against a very strong North Old Boys team .NOB's piled on 15 goals to one in the first half to deish a weak visiting team . They piled on another 15 €in the second half, but the Jackers must have splasome water on their faces, as they also managed to igoals. But the NOBs were just too big, too strong an(talented for Ajax who now must rely on a lot of Undctalent to make the step up if they are to be at allpetitive this year. Word is that at Ajax injuries '.depleted the club and they are already looking tofuture . But for NOBs it could be a case of howalthough they as yet have not played any of the teexpected to be a force this year .

Preview of Round 3 .Marcellin take on St Bedes at Mentone in a cla

am looking forward to watching . On current formhard to separate the two, but to go out on a limbpick one, I would have to lean towards the TigersBedes/Mentone in a toss of the coin clash .

I think I will go for the Old Mentonians overManash boys. The Panthers are a good team when gcand should win by a couple of goals .

Ajax are really feeling the heat this year, although they haven't won a game, I think the Roiwill leave the Jackers on the bottom of the table, alby a couple of goals .

No rth Old Boys after a massive win will be too strfor Thomastown, although I would not expect the &sort of margin . NOBs by 30 points.

D SECTIONby Peter Kelly& David Cook

The evenness in the Section now places pressureon all clubs to gain the 4 points . The 'Friars being

the only undefeated side and the 'Shoppers' yet to

open their account .The game between the 'Red Devils' who opened

well , and the 'Bloods' who got back into the gamethrough the Livingstone brothers (six between themup to half time), was always going to the wire . The'Devils' let themselves down with inaccurate kickingand if not for a great game again from McNamara, whose opening to the second quarter was brilliant, they may have been beaten by more . They were alsowell supported with a good four quarters from veter-an rover Panjari and talented recruit Brad Hockey.

The 'Bloods' young ruckman Birch was excellentcoming off the bench in the 1st quarter, along withanother ex-Under 19 player Andy Hyland proving theworth of Under 19's at clubs .

The second game was one of two that were stolenby clubs at the weekend when the 'OEGs' went tosleep allowing the 'Sharks' to kick 5 unanswered

goals. When the 'OEGs' awoke they managed to get towithin a point before losing by 2 in the dire last fewminutes . In perfect conditions a very poor standardgame saw neither side able to get into their gameplan . Mahoud kicked 7 to control the 'Sharks' for-ward line with great support from Sherman and

Vaughan whilst for the visitors Evans kicked 6 andBishop in the ruck were their main stayers .

The third game opened with the 'OGs' wastingtheir scoring opportunities to allow the 'Friars to lead

at the first break . Even with great drive from

Edmonds, Mithen and Howe ll (who kicked half their

score) they were unable to convert. The 'Friars were

able to record a comfortable win in the end after beingfirst to the ball and running very well in the last half.

Matthew Carbone put in a pearler filling the collec-

tion plate with 7 goals from a half forward flank with

Houstan at Centre Half Back in total control .

In a very 'torrid' encounter at Carrol Reserve the'Jocs' were lucky to get the points. Inaccurate kick-ing and undisciplined play nearly cost them which inthe end was what brought the 'Shoppers' undone . Agame again with a low skill level where both sides willneed to lift if they intend to see the final's action .

Snow , little Koppy and the skipper Cracker weregreat all day for the 'Jocs' . The 'Shoppers' got to with-in 5 points but undisciplined play reversed a free kickin the goal square and the resulting goal was the ballgame. Tristan White was a focal point up forwardwith Hazel an d Bobetic giving plenty around theground .

8

A cliffhanger between the 'Wellers and tt:

'Fields' saw the home side steal 4 points in a gaitthat was as unpredictable as Melbourne's weatheMarcus Scott was B .O.G and fittingly kicked tthsealer from the boundary and was ably supported hthe 'Wellers Billy McKenzie and Nick Frego . Tb'Fields' down early took the lead with 2 minutes to gbut a kick for goal on the siren fell short and left thezfeeling robbed . Their skipper Nigel was again dom

nant with Matthews a key in the last quarteRooster was as usual always in the thick of it and sall clubs now will be required to look to this week wita little more endeavour and commitment to skill .

LOOKING AHEAD

Game 1 being played at Glenhuntly Oval. Thi

week sees the 'Fields being visited by the 'Friars tconvert their ways with both scribes going against thtrend 9 out of 10 home sides winning and predictina visitors win . The highlight of this match will bbetween the skill of onballers and prime movers igetting to the ball first in what should be a greagame .

Game 2 being played at Como Park . The 'Jocstravel to the 'OG's home and will have to give morthan a disciplined commitment to team play to havany possibility of pulling this one off. Mark Neeld hahis boys pretty well committed to their task and botlscribes predict the home side to be too strong.

Game 3 played at Salesian College. The 'Bloodswill wander to the 'Shoppers' monastery ancalthough the small ground will suit the home teanthe visitors will have too much tall timber in the second meeting of two of last years E section premiersThe great input of skilled ex Under 19's is icing on thicake to the 'Bloods' at this stage of the year and botlscribes predict a good win to Aquinas.

Game 4 being played at the Grammar School . Th(

'OEGs host the 'Red Devils' in a game that could g(either wa_v. If McNamara is left unchecked and agairprovides the same drive then the home side ma}struggle but if Bishop and Evans fire up again therthe host should win . The Captain selects the host.while Chocolate selects the 'Red Devils '

Game 5 being played at Gordon Barnard ReserveThe 'Sharks' travel North to take on the 'We llers irwhat will be a very close game . Both clubs will b(wanting to record their second victory and with both

nly 2 rounds completed and already we have aserious boom team in Kew, who have blitzed

strong opponents on each of their outings . A Kewrevival has always been on the cards, and it will begood for Amateur football if the turnaround provesto be a permanent feature. Bu ll een Cobras alsolook as though they are realizing the potentialmany of us considered they had last season .

Full marks to the CEO for taking up the vexingmatter of lower level sides being plundered of theirbetter players to top up the higher section clubs . Itis not an easily solved problem, but it does requireattention if the VAFA is to maintain a viable U19competition, amongst other things. No club, to myknowledge would ever stand in the way of anyyoung player aspiring to play at the top levels ofAmateur or AFL/VFL football, though there maybe a fine line between satisfying that personalambition and the exploitation of it by some of themore experienced Zoltan Karparthy's in therecruitment business . (ZK was the My Fair Ladycharacter referred to in the immortal lines ;

'Oozing charm from every pore ,He oiled his way around the floor . . .')

Last Week

Old Carey met Eley Park at Bulleen in a gamewhere the final scores belied the effort put in bothsides, neither of which had anybody left on theinterchange bench by 3/4 time. Ken Walker, thesolitary field umpire wasn't impressed with thesize of Dunshea oval, but still had enough left inhim to run up to the social room afterwards . TheSharks had problems with the C's rebounding outof defence and speed round the flanks, but theystuck to their tasks and will be improved by therun . Centre, Andy Hi lle; ruck, Daniel Grant ;David Bowen on the ball ; and the Payne brothersin the blackline did well for the Sharks. The C'swere well served by flankers, Matt Curry, LeighSmall and Ch ris Withington .

Kew trounced Yarra Vall ey at Victoria Parkafter establishing a big lead in the first term. Yarracould not come to terms with Kew's long kickingand strong marking round the ground and in gen-

; eral had 'one of those days' . Kew are looking extraominous at this early stage and have to be regard-ed as the section benchmark . Peterson andHarrington stood out for Yarra, while Kew hadstand out players in Rick Puiverenti (6 goals),Bruno Dimasi ( BOG), and CHF, Greg Porte andCHB, Jamie Bell .

Hawthorn Citizens tried hard agains t0

Richmond Central, but were completelyoutmatched . PhilAvery, ruck roving ,Steven Duff at HFF, and Shane Parker strovevaliantly for the Citizens. Chris Andonopoulosplayed a blinder on his 50th with Chris Shannonimpassable at CHB.

Bulleen Cobras overwhelmed ElthamColl egians as can be seen from the scores andthat is as much as this scribe knows .

Chirnside Park sussed out the opposition .TODAY

Eley Park meet Kew and will have some prob-lems containing them in their present fierce form .The Sharks do man up well and Kew's long gamewill not be suited by the smaller area of theWhitehorse Reserve but even so, it is hard toenvisage Kew not coming home with less than a6/7 goal win .

Yarra Va ll ey play Hawthorn Citizens and wi llbe in an ugly frame of mind after suffering one oftheir infrequent defeats. Yarra will have too muchtalent in too many places and will win comfortably .

Richmond Central and Bulleen Cobrasshould be a ball-tearer and just to ensure there isa Bulleen Cobras report next issue I will be a spec-tator at the Loughnan Oval . Centrals possibly havea height advantage over the Cobras which willcome in handy if the day is fine but the Cobrasnow seem to be putting four quarters together andwill be very hard to beat. IT go for the Cobras by afew points in a very tight game, which won't worrythe Yellow and Blacks one bit, because they loveproving me wrong!

Eltham host Chirnside Park on the MainCollege Oval and will still be reeling from the ham-mering they copped last week from the Cobras .However, this is another game, and being a youngside the Turtles will have a healthy stock ofresilience . Not enough thought to trouble thePan :ers today, who should be able to pick up thefour points with a bit to spare .

Old Carey's turn for a bit of reconnaissance .Reserves winners should be: Kew, Yarra

Valley . Bulleen Cobras and Chirnside Park .Correspondents the Monday contacts are 9547

9144 and fax 9547 7764 . My apologies toBrendan Egan of Chirnside Park, plus SimonPickett of Richmond Central whose messages I didnot receive until after the Round 2 copy deadline .

E CENTRAL SECTIONby Mick James

No surprises this week with talk already cen-tring on how far Uni Blacks . Garry Connolly

will have his work cut out keeping a lid on thingsat Ransford Oval with "Planet" Hall still to returnfrom injury and only the possibility of another wetwinter appearing to stand in the way of hischarges .

Round 2 reviewDown at Sayers Rd Old Westbourne buil t on

their two good quarters last week stringing togeth-er four quarters of systematic and effective footballto bring West Brunswick back to earth . TheWarriors took the initiative into the breeze in thefirst term and never relinquished control of thegame to provide an ideal backdrop for DesHorsburgh's 50th . Best for the locals were Baroo,Benny, Ash and Juck while, for the Magpies,Newitt, Smythe and Brown toiled hard. In thetwos the result was reversed with Khoury,D'Andrea an d Cocolaras leading the black andwhites to their first victory of the year and expos-ing the lack of depth that may be the only thingstanding between Westbourne and a muchimproved position at the end of the season .

Uni Blacks ran out comfortable winners aftergetting an early 5 goal jump on North Brunswickat Allard Park . Predictably the physical pressureincreased in the second half sending Doc Costellointo paroxysms on the sidelines but making littledifference on the scoreboard . Lynch put his handup in the forward line for the students minus Hall, while Little and Smith were the driving forces inthe centre where they were given first use of theball by big men MeA rthur & Vaughan. The Blacksressies again ran out comprehensive winners .

UHSOB confirmed that they can't be takenlightly this year with a spirited performance atBrens Oval that saw Williamstown's slender leadunder threat until midway through the final term. Both teams had a number of players out, amongthem High skipper Craig Skinns, but it was the 10goal performance of Greg "Tunnel" Warren from aforward pocket that kept Willy in the box seat .Coach Alan Elliot got stuck into his side's pas-sengers at the final break assuring them they'dhave plenty of opportunity to make up for a lossdown at Fearon Reserve on the Sunday . The visi-tors took the message to heart, kicking away dur-ing the final term before High managed a couple ofconsolation goals . Dave "BR" Lee and MuzzaHo ll and were the other key contributors with

12

Williamstown alsotaking a hard foughtwin in the earlygame .

Accuracy appears to have been the differencin this year's first battle of the students withprofligate Swinburne failing to capitalise onmore scoring shots as La Trobe chalked up the.first win for '97 . The Trobers ran out easy winnerin the twos despite their own case of the yips ifront of goal.

Uni Reds took advantage of the bye to holtheir annual game between players of city an,country origin (and a few ring-ins) with congratulations to former coach Mick Farrell for ending hiyear long drought with a convincing win at th,head of the straw munchers . The return of RoeMcLennan and Greg Cook among the highlighton another perfect day for football .Preview round 3

This week's Brunswick Derby may not be quit(as breathlessly anticipated as the Rumble in thfJungle (a wheeze of anticipation might be mor(appropriate at this level) but the game is crucial tcthe prospects of both sides . Rope a dope is likely tcbe a confusing tactic with a winless NorthBrunswick predicted to be too desperate over the12 rounds . North by 2 goals over their Westernneighbours .

The possible return of Hall and the need toreward some players from their rampant ressieswill strengthen Blacks who should account for theimproved UHSOB at home by 9 goals .

Williamstown also expect a few back for theirclash with Swinburne and should be hungryenough after last week's close run thing to kickaway by a bakers' dozen down at Fearon Reserve .

The Reds travel to Sayers Rd with an unblem-ished record against the Warriors who are a fivegoal better side at home. Results from the last 2weeks make this the toughest game of the roundto pick but it's hard to go past Old Westbournewho should run out 18 point winners, a tip that'slikely to see this scribe run out of Fitzroy.

7. After 2 rounds, 4 teams remain undefeated, 4yet to record a win and 2 with a 1 win/1 lossrecord. This weeks round of matches will start tosift out the 'wheat' from the 'chaff .Review - Round 2

St . Mary's took control early against Oakleighand with great pressure and a running brand offooty went to the sheds at 1/2 time 9 majorsahead . Oakleigh with an edge in fitness trimmedup a 10 goal 3/4 quarter deficit to a respectable 24pis come siren time . Best for the Saints wereDuke, Theoharris and Stone .

Power House after an even first half againstElsternwick seized the game early in the third withsix unanswered goals . The 'Wicks' were unable tomatch the 'House' in teamwork or quick movementof the football. For Elstermvick, Scott Clementswith eight snags and Leigh Murphy were bestwhilst for Power House, Robertson, Birch, Gi llwere rated best in a good overall team effort thatsaw the 'House' home big victors by 73 points .

Once against Glenhuntly were slow to startand the game was all but over by quarter time withSt . Pat's Mentone 'Vultures' kicking out some sixgoals ahead . The closest the 'Hunters' got was atthe finish (8 pis) once again catch up football wasthe 'Hunters' lot . MVP's for Glenhuntly wereRossiter, Kouts and Turner .

Peninsula 'Pirates' lacked intensity early inthe game against Monash Gryphons who to theircredit from the outset took the game right up tothe visitors by playing strong, hard attackingfooty . Scores were level at lemon time and all wasset for a rip snorter last term. Not to be thePeninsula boys steadied and through sheer perse-verance and a couple of great individual perfor-mances were able to ultimately win convincinglyby 44 points . For the 'Pirates', better players wereMcLorinan, Garath Park, Farrer and for the gal-lant Gryphons, Hetherington, Davey andGilchrist .

Southbank had a day out at the expense ofANZ Albert Park in a game that was played ingreat spirit down at Mackie Road Reserve . The firstquarter was very competitive, however from thereon in, after the 'Bankers' honed their skills to thesmallish' oval, it was all over red rover. Best forANZ were Saunders, McLellan and Smith whilstfor Southbank the'Umbilical' brothers, Bunny andEasty were great and ably supported by Kip .(Apologies to many others) .Preview - Round 3

St . Mary's versus Monash Gryphons. Winning

form is good form (just ask T.B .). Confidence mibe high in the 'Saints' camp and probably a litlow at the 'Gryphs'. St . Mary's just by 11 poiibut beware, a win is right around the cornerMonash . Good effort last week from the Grypwill make it a danger game for the boys from GIIris but theirs has been an excellent start, one itwill continue today.

Peninsula versus Power House . A 'blocbuster' and the 'House' have to overcome the trEel bug . Having now tasted victory I reckonPower House going on with it against the 'Piratwhom I believe have yet to hit top form. T'House' by 15 pts . Wrong again KB . The Pirateshome are usually awesome as shown by their fozagainst the Krushers, and today will be no diffEent as they knock the House back to reality willgreat big jolt .

Elsternwick versus Glenhuntly. No love Icbetween these two and it won't be a place for tfaint hearted. Although yet to open their accounselect the 'Hunters' to do the deed and salute cotfortably by 27 points . Not an easy one to tip thEven though losing both the Hunters have be,competitive, they must play for four quarters aiwork hard to stop the Wicks firepower up forwarif they do this they can and will win . Sorry Max .

St . Pat's Mentone versus Southbank. Boteams will flex their muscles to gain the early seson psychological advantage . On a form Iiithrough Glenhunfly the 'Bankers' are just a litibit ahead, however the home ground advantagethe 'Vultures' negates this to a degree. Wearing nheart on my sleeve and leaving the 'Brain' at hon(mine not Tommy's) I'll pick Southbank by 19 piYou're well known for leaving your Brain in majplaces KB not just at home, but you are spot (here the Tigers are in excellent touch and will ethe Vultures dead and enjoy the spoils at Khyat;

Oakleigh versus ANZ Albert Park . Baringdraw one of these teams will be breathing a litteasier on Saturday night . Form of both has be(very ordinary to date . At home the 'Krushers' aentitled to start favourite, however on a form Iiithough St . Mary's I lean to ANZ to get home bypt . Disagree KB with my tip Oakleigh to Krush tlZedders .

Rund 2 has come and gone and with it thecore discrepancies from Round 1 . A mor e

even round of football last week, with sides grap-pling with one another to make a strong start tothe season, with more guaranteed battles today .Review - Round 2Section 1

Uni . Blues bolted from the blocks against OldBrighton and with (17) first 1/2 goals to (3), the'Tonners were never in the hunt. Johnson booted(12), while Kordick, Fricker and Camm did whatthey liked for the Blues . For the 'TonnersParnham, Raju and Alderson were consistentperformers . Likewise De La Salle jumped OldCarey at Bulleen and held a healthy (5) goal leadat 1/2 time. An even next three quarters followedhowever the opening term by the D's was the dif-ference in the finish . S. Wood, Bond and Hoodwere best for the OC's with M . Harber, Bonniciand Waters (4) excellent for the winners . At 1/2time of the Mazenod, St . Bernards clash bothteams had had (12) shots on goal, however the'Nodders were the more accurate and in the sec-ond 1/2 booted (12) goals to (4) to run out easywinners . Egan, Garbellini, Rigg and Fotiniotis(4) were unstoppable for the `Nodders, withBonnici, Mount and Kavanagh battling valiantlyall day for the Bernards . Old Xavs bounced backinto action after their first round defeat to crushthe OM's by 100 points . With Barrett (7) andHilbert (6) on fire up forward and other winners inHealy, Webb and Jones the Xavs were back totheir best. The OP's sounded a warning that theirfirst up win against the reigning premiers was nota flash in the pan with a commanding (20) goaldrubbing of SKOBS. Rees, Warren and Green (4)were dangerous all day for the OP's .Section 2

Warringai bounced back from their first rounddrubbing to take the lead at 1/2 time from OldCamberwell , but were unable to hang on in thefinish with the 'Wellers finishing the better. Yin,Wilson and Pope (3) were great players for theRedbacks, while Smith (6), Scott and Dam namedbest for the 'Wellers. Old Scotch outpointedWhitefriars at home, but not before getting afright in the third term by being held goalless andtrailing at 3/4 time. However Terry Kendall musthave called on something special as the Scotchiesrammed on (4) goals to (2) in the final stanza towin eventually . Junkeer, Frankenburg andThompson best for the Scotchies, as wer e1 6

Northey, Reid and ' I !Winch for the'Friars . Collegianshad their match ---'wrapped up against the Blacks at 1/2 time with, comfortable (25) point buffer, which they added t(only marginally in the finish . For the Lion:Champion, Gnomatka (9) and Samuel were soli(performers . Beaumaris returned to the winner;list at the expense of rival Old Haileybury aMcKinnon Reserve. The Bloods obviously thankin~their lucky stars the Sharks did not kick straightP. Kennedy, Quin and McKenzie were hard to gcpast for the Sharks . Marcellin outlasted a fast fin~ishing Will iamstown at home to take the point;and although Mackley, C . El Houli (3) anManning battled hard for the CY's it was to be i nvain come siren time .Section ( 2) Blue

Ormond surprised everyone by jumping the'Ashers at home and with a strong first 1/2, aswell as keeping their opponents goalless in thefinal quarter the 'Monds won their second on thetrot . Captain Brown once again was in everythingwith Naughton (9) and Beckett having finematches for the 'Monds . For the 'Ashers Arnot,Kazenwadel and Sullivan battled valiantly all day.Hampton Rovers jumped the OGs in the firstquarter but could only manage another (6) goalsfor the match, while the OGs piled on (10) goalsafter 1/4 time to go down by just (4) points .Co ll ins, Wilson and McGregor kept the OGs inthe match, while the Rovers were best served byParkinson, Rehn and Iles. Old Xaverians (2)overcame a slow start to defeat De La Salle (2) inan entertaining match at Toorak Park . Down at1/4 time the Xavs lifted in all departments to givePeter Call inan his first VAFA victory . For the XavsBowden, Hart and Hoare were fine players withCoburn booting (8) majors . For the D'sMystakidis, Donnison and Campbell never gavein. In the match of the round MHSOB failed to liveap to their first round results and were mauled bythe St . Bedes Mentone Tigers after 1/4 time, managing only (5) goals to (15) in the final (3) quar-ters . Ryan, Dwyer, Kingwell (4) and Wintle dom-inated for the Tigers with, Norman, Casse ll andTaylor (3) keeping the High competitive . AJAX hadthe bye.

Old Brighton host Old Carey at Brighton andwith both teams coming off losses last weekendboth coaches will have their charges pumped upfor this match . At home it is always hard to go pastthe `Tonners, and they will win today. De La Sall e

clash with Mazenod at Waverley Park in what willbe a great even contest . Both team possess potentforward lines, damaging mid-fielders and attack-Ing, backlines . In a toss up the 'Nodders . St .Bernards host the Xavs and I cannot see theBernards opening their account against the Xavstoday. The OM's must bounce back today but wiIlfind the OP's a tough nut to crack . The OP's areplaying fine football at present and I cannot seethem losing today. Uni . Blues welcome SKOBSand by the day's end the SKOBS will well and trulyknow that they are in Section 1 . The Blues com-fortably.

Winning Edge

CLUB XVIII SECTIONby Norm Nugent

Round 2, which saw climactically perfect condi-tions for football, brought many high scores, a

few surprise results and another 75% success rate foryour tipster. On a sadder note foundation Club XVIIImember Old Geelong has withdrawn through lack ofplayers .

RESULTS OF ROUND 2SECTION 1 .

Despite my preview the reality for Old Scotch wasthat they were not talented enough to challenge OldBrighton Bloods, who won convincingly by forty fivepoints . Old Scotch now find themselves in the unusu-al situation of being outside the top four after tworounds.

Mazenod did win convincingly over De La Sallewho were not talented enough to extend the talentedMazenod combination . With their winning margin ofsixty six points adding to their percentage Mazenodlie in second place, from which they will prove diffi-cult to dislodge .

Collegians proved far too strong for St Bernards, who disappointed again . The "Lion's" margin of forty-eight points clearly demonstrated their superiority. StBernards need to quickly take stock or they will notbe in a position to defend their title in August .

Old Xaverians again have placed a deposit on thepremiership, as a result of their ninety-nine point vic-tory over cellar dweller Old Melburnians . Only inac-curate kicking prevented Old Xaverians reordering awider winning margin.

St Kevins had the bye .SECTION 2.

Newcomers, Syndal Tally Ho, despite their longjourney to Keilor had the good form shown by OldEssendon Grammarians in Round 1, showed they areready to be a force in this section . Old EssendonGrammarians were forced from the top four by theSyndal Tally Ho margin of fifty-eight points .

As I predicted Mt Lilydale did win their first matchat the expense of Therry Penola, who find themselveson the bottom of the ladder after two crushingdefeats . Mt Lilydale won their first game by seventyseven points and restored their percentage to arespectable figure.

Monash Whites took the points againstThornbury-Cougars who lacked the talent to matchthat of the Students from Clayton . Monash Whites, who won by fifty-seven points, jumped to fourth placeas a consequence.

Kew won on forfeit from Old Geelong whileMarcellin enjoyed the advertised bye.

PREVIEW OF ROUND 3SECTION 1 .

Early season formsuggests that today' sOld Brighton Bloods versus Mazenod match coubwell be a preview of the 1997 final series . Today homground advantage will favour Old Brighton Bloodwho have already defeated one 1996 finalist . Theivisitors, Mazenod have in 1997 defeated two of thi1996 finalists and appear to be the big improver irthe Section. Although the match will be played on thfBrighton beach Oval I am selecting Mazenod to wirnarrowly.

Collegians, who have commenced with two clearwins today meet De La Salle who are yet to win .Despite a sixth sense telling me that De La Salle willwin I must select Collegians, who se early form sug-gests they are becoming one of the strong sides of theSection .

Last season's two Club XVIII premiers meet at StBernards . The home side has done nothing of notethis season whereas Old Xaverians have again proventheir talent. Today they should win again despite thehome ground advantage held by St Bernards.

Old Scotch, should rebound today with victoryover St Kevins who may need the game to regainmatch fitness.

Old Melburnians have the bye .SECTION 2

Two newcomers, Syndal Tally Ho and Mt Lilydalemeet on Jordan Reserve. Syndal Tally Ho could hard-ly have made a more auspicious debut than they didlast week which warrants my belief that they are aforce in the Section . I expect Syndal Tally Ho to be toostrong for Mt Lilydale whose form fluctuated betweenRounds 1 and 2.

Kew play Monash Whites who will find the con-fines of Victoria Park very different from the widewings of the University Ovals . Kew, who in Round Irevealed pre 1996 form are my selection.

Marcellin travel across the northern suburbs toplay Thornbury Cougars, who failed in their first ClubXVIII game last week . Monash Whites are the com-mon denominator of form for this match as Marcellindefeated them in Round i and they defeatedThornbury Cougars in Round 2 . Therefore Marcellinshould win this match . I know this inductive thinkingcannot be applied to football but I still selectMarcellin.

Therry-Penola and Old Essendon Grammarianswho met in Round 1 have the byes .

We stilldo live in a great country and that is because othersbefore us have made a sacrifice . in many instances thesupreme sacrifice, to enable Australians all to embraceand enjoy the things we have which we probably takefor granted .

Do you know the answer ?Third caller to my message bank 0412 773 900

telling me the name of the former VAFA umpire now withthe AFL wins "Going Away" by Martin Flanagan . Leaveyour name and contact number. No winner last week.

1997 season .'Taking over as advisor presents some exciting

iaallenges in season 1997 .The formation of a new coaching panel, to

in a11 games . I believe we can achieve this . At the

weekly appointments . The commitment is required

t o f the season we had 116 registered umpires .ta r

ii is unrealistic to expect all to be available at one

me though it must be possible to cover our 102

from all of those umpires throughout the season .

By producing a positive atmosphere where allumpires are enjo what they doimprove the standard of umpiring and football in

the Amateurs .We have formed an alliance with the Yarra

Valley Junior Football League which we hope willhelp increase our numbers in '97 and beyond inline with the excellent arrangement Brian Bullusshad with the MSJFL .

With most of the hard work done over the pre-

season to set ourselves up for the season, now isthe time to taste the fruits of our labour .

The reward will go to those who commit them-selves and are prepared to do the little extra with-out question as has always been the case .

I wish all participants involved in VAFA footballtheir deserved success for the remainder of the

season ." Michael SneddonAdvisor.

you all the best for this season and hopefully moreseasons to come. We hope that your stay with the

choose heads or tails, then pick an end . But whathappens when the captains are playing differentgames, as Tim Ovadia found out by having asenior captain and an under-19 captain perform

the toss .For those players who have the misfortune of

being reported during a game and have to front upto the tribunal on Tuesdays . all is not lost . The

umpires will have their milk bar open so you mayenjoy some cool or hot refreshments as you dis-cuss your plight with your fellow players and begforgiveness from the umpire. They will be serving

drinks, snacks and hot soup .Ever wondered why a goalie puts his hand in

front of his eyes after a score has been registered?Maybe he forgot the scorecard in the change

rooms . Luckily to the rescue a couple of kids torustle up a card and Tom Johnston tipping themfor their troubles . By the way Kevin Segota was

the left hand for Old Xaverians or St . Bernards? .

And for AD's black eye, we heard he walked

FTTAhe sun shone and the football played wasI entertaining. Welcome back to another season

of FIDA football .

REVIEW - ROUND 1Karingal opened their account at the expense

of Maribyrnong in a replay from last year'sDivision 2 Grand Final . IN an even matchKaringal's 3 goals to (1) in the third quarter seeingthem home comfortably in the finish . The Marlinsreceived a forfeit from Broadmeadows, who wehope will field a team in 1997 . Heidelberg playedthe newly formed Lions and got the shock of theirlives with the Lions playing good football and hav-ing strong numbers for their first up match .However in the finish it was the experienced play-ers of Heidelberg who saw them through . Parkside(1) hosted the newcomers Ballarat and the boysfrom Ballarat really hit their straps winning by ahuge amount and sending them well on the way tobeing a very strong side in 1997 . Werribee forfeit-ed to Parkside (2), and like Broadmeadows wehope they have sufficient numbers to be competi-tive this season . Ringwood proved too strong forHawthorn Citizens although the encouragingsigns were the healthy numbers each side had onthe sidelines.

In Bendigo the home side won a great matchagainst Keilor. Although scores were unavailablefrom this match at the time of printing form allaccounts the match was one of very high quality .

Bendigo (2) had the bye .

ROUND ONE - PREVIEWAt Brunswick on Sunday Maribyrnong fac(

the might of Heidelberg and althougtMaribyrnong matched up well with Karingal la&week, they will find Heidelberg a little more sklllectoday. Broadmeadows play Hawthorn in whaishapes as an extremely close match shoulcBroadmeadows be able to field a team this week .On the presumption that they do Broadmeadow, will win . Keilor play Karingal in what will be theclosest match of the round . Karingal are the new-comers to Division 1 and today the Keilor playerswill inflict Karingal's first defeat for sometime .

Parkside (1) and (2) will play their match as acurtain-raiser to the VAFA match Parkside versusOld Essendon. In a match that sees Parkside (1)keen to win their first match this should be theiropportunity today.

The Marlins travel to Ballarat an d will find thisteam a harder nut to crack than most hey encoun-tered in 1996. Travelling should not affect the Marlinswho will win a close match by less than a goal .

Bendigo matches this weekend will seeBendigo (1) host the Lions at their new homeground the North Bendigo Oval, Atkins Street,North Bendigo . The Lions were impressive lastweek and will defeat Bendigo at home today. whileBendigo (2) take on Ringwood, who will give theirall but fail to kick a winning score today .
