hat a month its been in football, what withscribes Jostling to write the highly sought-

after A-section column each week, a bumperresult from the representative match and thecontinually surprising results from amateur foot-ball's premier division .

St Kevins and Old Melburnians played thethiller of the round, the SKOBS snaring a five-point win which must have had Mike McArthur-Allen breathing a sigh of relief. At the top end ofthe table, Xavs and Old Scotch turned on anabsorbing duel which saw the Cardinals take thepoints and maintain their grasp on top spot . OldTrinity defied the pundits yet again by scoringthe upset of the round over St Bernards, leavingthe B-section premiers outside the four on per-centage .

And if you thought last week was a big roundin football, just look at today's draw . First playssecond, fourth plays fifth and last year's grandfinal combatants do battle at Toorak Park .

MARCELLINA chance to lift themselves off the bottom

rung slipped Marcellin by during the third-quar-ter of last week's three goal loss to MHSOB . TheEagles managed just 1 .1 in that term while theUnicorns piled on seven to all but end the con-test. Waters boosted the midfield on return fromstate duties, while the work of Cox and six goalsfrom Treganowan also gave Marcellin supporterssomething to smile about .

MHSOBAn important win over the Eagles helped keep

the Unicorns in touch with the main pack, but a3-4 record and a low percentage don't auger allthat well for the club . The familiar names ofCassell, Thompson, Eabry featured again lastweek, and the skipper's name was - as usual -among the team's best players .OLD IVAri1HO E

Kevin Tibaldi might have had some measureof confidence in his players at half-time last weekagainst the Blues, but it must surely have dissi-pated as the 'hoers were overrun by a rampantUniversity in the third quarter. To make mattersworse for the coach, his side has a paltry per-centage of just 56 .3%, and it's hard to see themstaying in the hunt for a finals berth if they loseto the Unicorns today.OLD MELBURNIANS

The sleeping giant, perhaps, lies in seventhspot with a very healthy percentage but an

1999 A -sectiongrand final replay. The Redlegs will be

Ldesperate to aton efor last year, but -more importantly - desperate to even their win-loss ratio, which will start to look decidedly lop-sided today if they lose . Holme is in good formand will be a more than worthy match for Bloodin the ruck .OLD SCOTCH

Top spot remains theirs and, more important-ly for Brendan Mason and the Cardinals, lastSaturday's win over Xavs should give the teaman important psychological edge - they knowthey can beat the reigning premiers . LukeHawkins won the battle of the goalkicking tabl

e with Dan Richardson by booting five, but theefforts of representative player Rohan Priceearned him BOG . Collins, Kitchen . Angus andco . continue to re-affirm their side's ascendancyfor the premiership .

OLD TRINITYTrinity could well turn out to be the surprise

packet of the year, although Leigh Carlsonwouldn't buy that and is unlikely to let his play-ers believe it anyway . But the T's found some-thing extra in the last term against highly-fan-cied opposition in St Bernards, and that mustcount for something - just how much we'll seewhen they take on the Blues at University today .

OLD XAVERIANSThe second part of a very important double

comes today for the reigning premiers at thehome of amateur football in the grand finalreplay against Old Melburnians . Xavs lost lastweek's important clash with the Cardinals, andcannot afford to drop the points again today in avery tight A-section field, let alone allow theRedlegs to get one back for last year .

ST BERNARD SI would not have wanted to be privy to Gary

Foulds' post-match address last week after theBernies loss to Trinity, but his players will needwise words today as they take on Old Scotch in atussle for top spot .

ST KEVINSA big win, by a small margin, over the Redlegs

gives SKOBS not an ounce of breathing space inthe logjam that is the A-section ladder. A 4-3win-loss record, a low percentage . glimpses of thevery best and the worst in alternate weeks - will,n_ ____t Cl v,.. .:..n c+~n~ nn nIPacP7

  • UNIVERSITY BLUE SAnother victory inspired by the magnificence

of Gil McLachlan' The Blues looked gone for allmoney against the 'Hoers, but it was a differentteam and a different ball game after half time.Today's clash with Old Trinity holds muchpromise.SELECTIONS

Old Trinity 4 points .Old Ivanhoe 11 points.St Bernards 7 points .Old Xaverians 31 points .St Kevins 39 points .

;` ;B: Congratulations to fellow A-section watcherand amateurs media man Rob Cross on his newjob, where he will no doubt be beamed into morehomes than currently tune in to the Channel 31replay! And if he was still here with us (in."ictoria), he would urge clubs to subscribe andothers to watch the replay each week! Well DoneRob !

Tragic circumstances surrounded the OldParadians and Whitefriars game, with the

shock death of Whitefriars' Vice Captain, MarkBateman . On behalf of the Old Paradians, and I'msure all involved in Amateur footy, I would like toextend our svmpathy to the Bateman family and theWhitefriars Football Club .

This week's results were not surprising, with thesupposed 'favourites' getting the money . Someinteresting games ahead, as we approach the halfwav mark . I'll write a review on how clubs are faringafter Rd 9, and contact the 'satchel swingers' for arevised premiership market, so could I please haveSOMEONE from each club ring me for that week .Review

Harry hosted the match between ladder leaders,Old Brighton, and the lowly Collegians . Unfortun-ately for the Lions, they again came up short, andwent down by 55 pts . However, this was not beforeOB were given a fright . With only 3 pis separatingthe teams at 3/4 time, according to 'The Rover',there was an upset of Dandy Andy proportionsbrewing. A 10 goal to 2 final quarter saw OB chargeaway to win easily . I would have liked to know more, but AGAIN, no-one called . Bradley bagged 7(he'swhite-hot right now), and Lennox and Perry blitzedfor the winners . For the losers, Vasdekis, Hovey andWoolhouse were good players .

The game at Bundoora between Old Paradiansan d Whitefriars was one sided for most of the day, with the home side being 70 pis up at half time, butonly limping to the line by 22 pts . The OPs set uptheir win with a 9 goal opening term, and the con-test was effectively over . For the winners . Burns,Vincent and Porteous played well . Whitefriars are tobe congratulated on their efforts, having to playunder duress, and kept at it right to the end, withan 8 goal last quarter . Well done fellas . Better play-ers were Reidy and brothers Pawlik .

On the vast arena of E .E .Gunn . NOBs inflictedthe third defeat in a row of Ormond, by demolishingthem by 56 pts . By 1/4 time she was getting readyto sing, with NOBs being 29 pis in front . From there .they built on their lead and cruised home in the end .Steve Grace and his boys appear to have lost all con-fidence that was accumulated in the first fourrounds . For the victors, Casboult. Nolte and Vogelsburned the turf, whilst big McConvill gave his rover,Stone a helping hand for the losing home side .

Mazenod disposed of a plucky Old Identoniansat Kevsborough to win by 43 points . There wasn'tmuch in it at half time, but Mazenod piled on 7 .6 tojust 2 .1 to end the contest . Again, that much vaunt-ed and well-publicised game plan swung intoaction, with Dunne, Hanley and Parry leading theway . For the OMs . their better players were Flaskis,Vick (again) and the Kuramoto brothers .

In a heated matchthat apparentlyspilled over from the2s, we saw OldHaileybury go dow nthe gurgler again to De La Salle to the tune of 9 pts .Inaccurate kicking by the away side allowed OH tobe in front at half time, but a 7 goal to 4 second halfsaw De La overpower their opponents . Smallestman in football, Bonniei, and the evergreen Toohey, along with Johnstone were the best for the winningside . OH's best were White, Carson and Jayasekara .Preview

Alleluia!! Praise the Lord!! 5 out of 5 for the firsttime this year (and it's taken me 7 weeks to do it) .This gives me unbridled confidence (or just plainstupidity), to delve into this week's matches . Here itgoes .

Whitefriars host the struggling Collegians atDonvale. Whilst the Lions wori t need those camelsthat others have required, Tim Hart will be needingsome prayers answered, even though they wereright in last week's game at 3/4 time. On the otherhand, Whitefriars have been consistent throughoutthe entire year, and I believe that last week's tragicevent will galvanise the club together . Whitefriars bylots - 42 pts .

Br Garve_v's oval sees Old Paradians play OldHaileybury . Peter Bedford is delving into his bag oftricks to try and get the home side to start putting4 quarters together if they are going to trouble thetop sides . Mick Dwyer must still be wondering whaton earth he can do to stop the rot of recent weeks .Based on the fact that the Green and Purples playtheir home ground very well, and that the lads fromOH have to hire those wretched, smelly camelsagain, I'll tip the OPs to salute today by 28 pts .

Beachside is where we see top-of-the-table OldBrighton play the out-of-sorts Ormond, where youcan back it in that the wind will blow to that score-board end . Dale Tapping has got his players purringalong like a well-oiled machine. They are on fire atthe moment. Ormond, in eontrast, have gone fromchocolates to boiled lollies in the space of 3 weeks, and Steve Grace is out there searching for thatsecret recipe called success . Confidence is sky-highfor the home side at present, and will continue ontheir winning way by 35 pts .

NOBs host the winless Old Mentonians atBrunswick . Frank Dunell has one of the ladderleaders going along nicely, and he will be makingsure that the players don't take this one lightly .Sven Samild could be our next Prime Minister, as hehas managed to coax Acreman out of retirement.OMs will win one very soon, but I don't think it willbe today . The purple shorts to win by 45 pts .

Mazenod welcome De La Salle to Central

  • rve in what should be a better . The question o n!,ody's lips is, can anybody stop the rampagin g,led? Their new, more structured game pl anbamboozled opposition teams, and Dave

; rays fresh approach has provided a muchaed lift in morale . Paul Cooper's boys, however ,a different proposition this week, and I actuall y

that my old club might be starting to put itil1 together, and they'll be the ones to prevail in

-ri ~aL contest . De La Salle by 4 pts .Reserves

Whitefriars, Old Paradians, Old Brighton, NOBs,De La Salle .I Correspondents

I ' m giving this one more try . Please call meon 9347 4105 or 0414 900 871 before 8 .00praSunday. There must be people from NOBs, OldHaileybury and Collegians who read this report . Yet,,vhen I ask for a simple phone call, it is not forth-coming. De La Salle, Old Mentonians, Mazenod andold Brighton only call spasmodically. Ormond and%F'hitefriars are the only two who seem to care .

De La Salle - Simon F at today plays 50gax::t: ::: for the club. A fine young player who is thisyear on Richmond's top-up list. A VAFA U19 rep-resentative player in '99 and with plenty of biggerand better things in store on-field, the club wish-es you Simon all the very best for the next 50 inthe blue and gold .

    - fle: - F irk "B ,,iey -, :i tear-anWhitefriars - Our club is devastated bythe loss of Mark . Club Member of 12 years,Club Captain for 5, B&F winner, 4 timespremiership player, 177 games . Above all ayoung man of honour, and courage. Lovedand admired by all of us. May his soul restin peace . We acknowledge the supportgiven by the VAFA and the Old ParadiansAFC prior to, during and after lastSaturday's game .

VALEOld Mentonians - The entire Old

Mentonians community mourns the loss o fI one of our most admired and valued support-

ers and friends, Tony Drinan, who tragicallyand suddenly died on the basketball court onWednesday May 17 .

Deepest sympathy is extended by all atthe Club to Jan, Troy, Aaron and Hayley .Courageously and admirably Aaron led oursenior side against Mazenod last Saturday inhonour of his father.

Respected and admired by all who knewhim, he will be sadly missed .

    SELF STORAGE

  • i)r the first time in year I final]-- tipped the card. Not too bad I guess it's only taken me 7 weeks .

Things are finally taking a little bit of shape now butthere is still plenty of time for those lagging behind alittle bit to make up lost ground in the coming weeks .Two weeks to go and we reach the half way markseems like only yesterday and pre season had juststarted.REVIEW

The Hoes suffered another final quarter fade outto go down to St Bedes Mentone Tigers by some 4goals at Brindisi Street . The Hoes looked primed topinch the game after dominating the 2nd and 3rdstanzas kicking 8 unanswered majors to take a 9point lead at 3/4 time . But not to be outdone theTigers stayed cool under pressure rallied togetherand rammed home 5 goals to nil in the final term tocome awav comfortable winners in the end . MooseMcgraw was in top form, Macca dominated up backand then down forward, Dave Goodchild took themark of the year according to him anyway and MattMerrifield made a fine debut for the victors . MarkLengacher made a fine return to the Hoes with 4goals as Chris Brown and Peter Flynn also playedwell.

Kicking into the wind Therry dominated the earlypart of the game but the Two Blues fought backtowards the end of the term to be within range at thefirst break . The home side hit the front early in thesecond stage before a 3 goal burst had given Therrya break at the main change . The third again went onewav and then the other until Therry finally sealed itin the last with 7 twins including a burst of 4 in 5minutes. The visitors were well served by Lee Hollowin the ruck along with Trevor Robinson, PaulEdwards and Stephen Boyle. For Praliran again nonewere better than this week's All Star Player of theRound Kip Watford ably backed up by Sam Pang with5 goals .

Bit of a hoodoo game for t =-at-ms as theyhave not had much luck against s recen'tlv.but they made sure of victory this time with a 6 toone opening burst, at one stage this lead was extend-ed to some 12 goals but to their credit the home sidefought back a little bit to narrow the margin to some9 goals . Andrew Sheerly made a fine debut for theSaints with 3 goals . Tim Rossiter played pretty wellas did Hayes-Dewar. Tkocz . Grey and Ryan . Bestplayers for the Ogs were Salter (he's been terrific overthe last few weeks) . Taylor . Higgins and Stinchcombefresh from State Duty.

The Bullants threw evervthing at the Jackas inthe first half only inaccuracy stopped them being fur-ther ahead, BT ran very well off the Ajax forwardswith Dave Matthews superb and for the 2nd week ina row the Jackas appeared flat. But alas for the

BuIlants in :' ie third ~quarter JulianKirzner took mattersinto his own hand swith 5 goals including a burst of 4 in 5 mins to < .!1n vhis side to steady aria come away with a comfortablevictory in the end, although the Bullants are to becommended for their endeavour and courage as theynever stopped trying . Yaron Rapaport at Full Baek,Gab Dukes, Mark Blashki, were the best for Ajax,Fruend was all class and Redlich was inspiring. Forthe Bullants better players were Graham . Schneider(yet again pretty consistent this boy) and Hare .

The Bayside Derby saw Beaurnsris come awaypretty comfortable 54 point winners in the end. TheSharks held sway and had a 29 point lead going intohalf time and they looked pretty cot `ortable . But theall important third quarter saw I_-, dig deepand apply pressure on the Beauy sid a trademarkof the Rovers game these days, causing a fewturnovers and a bit of panic resulting in 4 goals andonly a 5 point deficit at the last break. But in whatwas a decisive last quarter the Beaumaris players lift-ed and were able to break away from Hampton fm-ishing off the game very well and were pretty happywith their efforts . Plenty of good players around forthe victors with Nell Conlan, and Mike Matullickamong them while Nick Boctor's 6 goals were veryhandy. For Hampton who are a very young side theold stagers in Steve Anderson and -Chief Fletcherplayed pretty well as did Ben Martin who did the jobon Bradyn Haynes .P "rrV1sr

So ie interes" ig ones this week let's see if I cantip the card a~ain .

welcome t - totheir shores today a must win game for both sides .Ogs are certainly not setting the world on `re at themoment while the Hoes I believe have been playingsome good footv, they just need a little luck on theirside which I think they will find at home today .

Big game down at Brindisi Street where theTigers await the Jackas . Always tough to beat athome St Bedes where the smaller confines tend to stifle the running ability of their opposition and if theycan do that toc~av then they are not without a chance .Ajax appear to have been a bit flat since their winover Beaumaris but they do have the ability to gelthemselves up for the big games and I think they wi

l do it again today.Another important ga 1e for both sides take :

L~i_~ anyule ended Aquinas's unbeaten run with a~' merit filled win at the College last week

    .

Contacts, not affiliated with either club, havetold me it was the best game they'd seen foryears

. So, the clubs aspiring to a place in thefour, now know they have some seriously hardwork ahead of them .LAST WEEK

Oakleigh lost to Caulfield Gr. but could havebeen much closer had they kicked straighter inthe first half. Synman . Vella, and Pearce weredominant for the Fields, who are shaping up asvery real challengers to the Section leaders . TheMarshall bro's, Cameron rucking, & Rowan on-ball, with Trevor Bromley on a wing, to2ped thebill for the Oaks, who were encouraged by theirimproved showing .

Old Camberwell went down to MonashBlues but fought back commendably in the lastterm to restore some pride . The Blues werehappy with Shane Webster's form up forward, winger Nick De Young, and Ben Patterson at HF .Tristan Berenger, David Li1ja, and Garth Rowestood out for the Wells, who are nearly, but notquite there, just yet .

Old Carey beat La Trobe in a very scrappyaffair, where a few islands of cohesive play wereseparated by seas of gobbledegook . CamMatthews dashingly directed affairs from CHBfor the Panthers, John Raft showed a welcomereturn to form rucking, and Nick Vas roved withcustomary tenacity

. Clinton Perry did well forthe Trobers in the middle, as did Dean Sheldrickon the ball, and Lachie Wakelin on a wing .

St Leo's Emmaus were poleaxed by OldEssendon who gave another impressive displayof efficient forward converting

. OEG receivedmajor drive from ruckman, Scott MacPherson,on-baller Jordan Leask, and U19er, JamesHeritage at CHB

    . The impeccably reliable'Dr

.Mack' went fishing last week so the newsfrom the Parks was thinish .

Aquinas forfeited their unbeateness bravelyto Banyule in a great game requiring 75 flagwavings by the goalies . The Bloods had twomajors on the board before the Bears hadtouched leather, and were looking set at halftime, but a big 3rd Qtr saw Banvule peg themback, and finally inch ahead to a top win in arelentless final term . One of the best D Sectiongames for years and a credit to two class teams .

Bears' rover, BlairMoxon, played aripper, with RR ,Brad Willmore, an dbig Dave Williams in the ruck, not far behind

    .

Bloods' CHB, Bob Moran was in terrific form, with solid support from Sean Flynn on a wing, plus Andy Hyland & Chris Wooden down theblunt end .TODAY'S GAME S

Monash Blues welcomes Oakleigh to theFrearson, where the visitors, who are gaining inconfidence, will find the sheer class of the Bluestoo much to handle .

Old Camberwell hosts Aquinas and for thesecond week in a row run into a team coming offits first loss for the season . The Wells get bettereach week and they will certainly stretch theBloods, but are lacking the consistency to domuch more, which is a pity because, if they allclicked, they could blow any side out of thewater. The drive provided by the Bloods' mid-fielders and half backs should give them a 3/4win .

Old Carey and Caulfield Gr. meet at Bulleenin a venue switch, and it will need to shake off itsindirectness and ball overuse tendencies if it is tochallenge the Fields today

. The latter are settlinginto a formidable combination with class playerson every line, and while the Panthers have plen-ty of ability they lack the application of the bet-ter sides. Fields by 4 goals.

La Trobe Uni . takes on St Leo's with the vis-itors stinging from three losses on the trot and a2 game gap now between them and fourth spot, which they will be anxious to decrease

. It will bea fairly serious Park's side that runs on for themain game today, and they will have too muchfire power for the gallant Trobers

    .

Old Essendon meets Banyule in the matchof the day, and what a game it should be

. TheBears keep on surprising people, me especially, and comparisons with 1999 powerhouse,Bulleen-Temp ., are becoming more and more rel-evant . Like Bulleen-Temp ., Banyule puts 21solid fotballers on the field, all of whom play thefull four Qtrs, and never deviate from the basics .Grammar builds its game around an attackingback line, with strong runners though the mid-field and, this year, a very potent sharp end .attested to by them being able to have a class

  • ,znit like Peter Lutterschmidt occupying a FP! Aiough decision, but Grammar plays PEGS No .2yo -,vell . I'll go for them by a few points . Wish Icould be there !

RESERVESToday's winners should be ; Monash Blues,

Aquinas, Caulfield Gr ., St Leo's, OEG .Correspondents the contacts are 9818 1425
