The main reason for the decline of the Carnivals as they were played were the huge costs involved and it is hoped to attract a naming rights' sponsor who would undenvrite all costs of travelling associated with the playing of these matches . The concept on naming an All Australian team will also be reintroduced . The draw for the three year competition has been made and is to be ratified by the three participating states' boards of management before publication . The draw will appear in this column as soon as possible . With the Gl'estern Australian Amateurs keen to re-enter the senior competition after long time out of senior representative football, the VAFA will be keen to provide regular competition for our C-D4 (B-D4) representative side, probably playing the same organisation as our Under 19 representative side and on the same day. VIDEOS OF REP MATCHE S AFL, VFL club, VAFA players, parents and supporters may order vidoes of nay of the three matches played over the last two weekends . Charges - AFL/VFL club $100 per tape an d others $20 per tape. Payment must be lodged with order and orders directed to Karen McNaught at VAFA ( PO Box 359 Elsternwick, 3185) . • Tipping the card last week has restored some

credibility to yours trulys writings . It doesn't geLany easier from here on in, and I think theweekend off has come at exactly the right time!

ReviewN3Bs directed their chariots in the direction ofMcKinnon and probably wished ththey ern a stayed oldhome, as Old fla~.eylsu~ gavetouch up by 52 pts . The home side outscored theguests in every quarter, with the 2nd being themost damaging (6 goals to 2) . White, Walden andArmstrong were good performers for OH, whileNOBs' better players were Collison, Airier andVogels .It was a fair old plunde-ing da i at I3 Section'sbeachside haven, as 01 gave the young

    B x s team a shellacking by 120 pts. The

contest was all over at 1/2 time, as the visitorsheld a 10 goal lead and proceeded to build on thatover the course of the game . That man Toovey wason fire again with 10 goals, and was well assistedby Corcoran and R. Weddle . Boctor, Healy andCatlin battled hard for the home team .

The Old Paradians made the short trip to OakPark to take on Therry and came away with theprize, as they eked out a 25 point win . It seemsthat not even the old kicking mule could ruin theday for the OPs, as they go from strength tostrength in 2001 . Dintinosante with 6 majors waswell fed by the veterans in Brabender andO'Loughlin for the winners and Boyle, Carroll andNancarrow were fine contributors for the losers .

There was a party to end all parties out at Donvale,as Whfl~efrfars thumped Ormond by 50 pis to

    quarter that first

was the difference as the locals piledon 8 .1 to nil to break the contest right open

. Thebrothers Pawlik and Hilton starred or teveIl homeforside, whilst Wilson, Dale and James playe dthe visitors .At EP, Be La Salle set up a 37 point victory over

Old Mefburlaz$n.s with a 5 goal 1 st qtr against thewind that seems to constantly live at that ground .But for the straighter kicking, the margin couldhave been greater, as the 27 scoring shots to 15indicate . Mannix and the youngsters of Buckleyand Spithill were good players for DLS, and OMswere well represented by Berry, McMullin andWilheim .

PreviewOld Haileybury (13/4) face the daunting prospectof a trip to Chelsworth Park to take on the

juggernaut o fDwyer would bepleased with the d in 20p1, andconsistency his players are shos~n bwould be relishing the test thcY e_iis v .ek.Meanwhile, the coaches out at Pine Lodge wouldbe very happy vj'tth .;here they're sitting at presentand would love to put another challenger back intheir box . That they will do again this week, as theOf machine rolls on and claims another victi m

    when they 3 -1 -)y 31 pts .It's De (1(7} turn to play in the -

.~ __ s and buckets as they headwith thc _to the bear , and are welcomed by -(11/2) . Paul Cooper and his lads are motoru : .%aloisg nicely at present, as second spot and a 5-2record is a good effort to date . Jim Durnan and hischarges, on the other band, are in completecontrast: second last and 2-5, but still giving itthere all . Unfortunately for the locals, their recordwont improve today as the DLS runners will besuited by the big Beaumaris ground and that willbe enough to get them over the line by 3 6 pts .

It's the neighbourhood 'derby' at Brunswick thisweek, as Nt3Bs (4/5) host their next door rivals inTherry (415) . Frank Dunell will be impressingupon his players the importance of a victory today,as a loss will see them lose touch with the four .

Wavne Harmes will also know that another lossthis week will undo the good work that his playershave achieved over the past 3-4 weeks . This is atough game to call, so will have to go with thehome ground advantage (sorry Frank) . NOBs by 7

very please dhave made over the last month and thosestrategies of his are starting to hit home . GregFeutrill will have had time to recover from theworld's biggest hangover after their first and verysignificant win for 2001 . This won't be a pushoverfor the OPs, but they are on fire at the moment andat home their roll will continue as they march onby 20 pts .Our good friend, Mr . Gunn, puts on the afternoontea this week as Ormond (714) play host to OldM ellynrn iaaas (2/5) . Ian Jackman would be a touchconcerned with the state of play at his club, as ie sonly been I quarter of footy that has stopped themwinning the last couple of games . Erwin Leyden

  • , ast fortnight the Panthers, while the Two Blues,1 owed a welcome return last game, so it should be

    >d one. The result is important to both sides forring reasons and is hard to pick but I just feel

ihat the Panthers may have more scoring optionsLllan the Two Blues plus the return of a few handyplayers and the home ground advantage should be, ;iough to get them home.St BE t te-Ti and Russell Barneselcome his old club an Rovers back torindisi Street . There certainly will be a bit of goodatured rivalry going here and both sides are sure to

rise to the occasion . Russell will have a fullnowledge to the strengths of the Rovers players andll advise his new charges accordingly, but they

be surprised as Normie Goss does have themlg a bit differently these days . Tough day at the

otflce for all concerned here both sides in good form, but te Hampton side is just a fraction better andI"m sure they will take the R points today .Ajax and promises to beanother good I ttle a )th will be absolutelydesperate for a win . • IS THERE something about Elsternwick Parkthat visitors to Melbourne find difficult to locate?A fortnight ago the Western Australian AmateurFootball League players sent administrators intoa spin when they hadn't arrived an hour beforethe clash against the C-D VAFA reps .Last week the South Australian Amateur FootballLeague ran on to EP at 2 .15pm - the scheduledstarting time - a strange move for a team thathad little exposure to this environment .While the VAFA Senior Representative team waslined up, SA went through a couple of drillsoblivious to the calls from umpires C . a andWooley to get ready .SA was lucky that umpire Gibson is a friendlylawyer, as you could imagine him calculating thelegal ramifications of him starting with theCroweaters still in their tracksuit tops !Gibson must have realised that litigation ismessy so he waited, as did the crowd of 500, andthe 50 dignitaries, and the 18 VAFA players forthe Boys in Red to take their positions on adelightful afternoon for football .Maybe SA hadn't changed their watches fromCentral Australian time - they had come on to thefield 20 minutes early .Better get that clarified for next year's clash inAdelaide .The tactic by new SA coach Noel Annear workedas his team kicked five unanswered goals to openthe match as his ruckman Shane Dunstanenjoyed the umpires throwing the ball up ratherthan having it bounced .To throw up or bouncing became a mini-matchbetween the associations .In SA they don't bounce, here they do .Ruckman used to either would have anadvantage and there was no compromise of doingboth . SA won that one .There was more pre-game drama too :-Annear's name was spelt incorrectly in theprogram .-The cagey coach said 24-hours before the matchthat former Brisbane Lion Adam Heuskes, playing coach this year of Division T4vo clubGepps Cross, could fly in just hours before thematch and a decision hadn't been reached.Heuskes didn't front .

_. broadcast on Southern FM lastSunday morning a rumor that eight SA playershad gone home and the match was in jeopardyand at 2 .15 it looked to be so!

x t, who kicked five goals for the Viesvarying range including the Big V's first a t

21-minute mark of the first term, said th edelayed start might r-ve unbalanced the team .Maybe Vic coach Ti - : could have racedon to EP and gathered his players but Bourke isan honorable chap and this could have ledAnnear to doing same and chaos would haveenveloped the meticulous plans .Bourke also believes in his players and heepitomised this by sticking with Andrew

    - m in the ruck, who was named bes tafield after his last three quarters, while captain

i was beaten at centre-half forwardby former SANFL player Darrea . C" ,It wasn't until Chandler was swung to halfforward late in the match that McLachlan brokefree for a goal .Once Ramsden got the range of the throw ups hisnatural athleticism was too much for Dunstan .EP space was eaten up by midfieldersJackson, raver Arts, D _- e anduncanny and highly skilled ;Nick Mitchell, used to the goal square, wasplayed at half-back, as he was three years ago inAdelaide, and despite his wonky legs deprivinghim of his normal skilled delivery, Bourkereinforced Mitchell's commitment awarding himthe Vic coaching staffs award .SA half-forward Daniel Thomas kicked hisfourth and fifth goals within 60 seconds at the20-minute mark to give the Boys in Red a five-goal deficit and a sniff. It was snuffed in the gloom of early evening, suchwas the late finish, by Daniel Donati, ironicallyonly back from playing with West Adelaide a fewweeks ago .Oh, and as far as the Victorian CountryFootball League team finding EP in a month'stime, timekeeper John Robinson, who musthave been fretting with the late start, gets a freestreet directory each time he gets his carserviced .

Well, we now have a clear demarcationbetween the Haves and Have Nots, with thelowest of the Top Five 2 games and a healthypercentage margin clear of the best of theLower Five . OGGs, Aquinas, and YVOB, mayworry the top half on the odd occasion in thefinal 11 rounds, but, sadly, Old Carey andthe Blues are staring relegation in the face .

St Leos were walloped by IvanhoeAssumption, and not only did I have thewinner wrong, but was 2150% adrift with mypredicted margin!! The only downside toHoes otherwise impeccable performance wastheir 0 .10 last term, which was decent ofthem really, since my error margin wouldhave been even more horrendous! TomHealey did a superb job in the ruck for Hoes, feeding a trio of effective on ballers, StuartMorris, Leighton Pearce, and Paul Martin, with defenders Damon Wood, & Travis O'Neilshutting down the Animals' forwards . TheAnimals were not happy with anybody .

Monash Blues were outclassed by Banyuleafter the Blues started like rockets and goaled3 times before the Bears drew breath .Thereafter, the game went according to theWhitcroft plan, and the Blues could do littleabout it . Heath McDermott, Michael Natoli,Tim Egan, and Adam Dooley were majorcontributors for the Bears on the day. GrantChesari on the ball, and Al Herman acrossHB struggled valiantly for the Blues .

Old Geelong were thumped by UniversityBlacks, when their Laser Guided goalshooting deserted them, in the face of asterling performance by the Black's defence .McArthur, Mackie . Moody. Thomson, &Franklin all did well in the back half, withtalls . Schirmer, Sandiford, and Chatfieldcontrolling the aerial duels round the groundfor the Blacks . OGGs had a great debut effortfrom Nick Bayne, plus Wii Paul round theground and Hamish McInnes at the bluntend .

Yarra Valley ran away from Old Carey in thelast fifteen minutes after an entertaininggame . As predicted, the game progressed atbreakneck speed, with YV's, Robbie Drew, outstanding at HBF, well backed up by PaulCremean at CHF/Ruck, Ricky Pearce at CHB,

and Sam Savage inthe forward zone .Defenders, CalPhillips and LukeBattley worked hard for the Panthers, andJoel Daniher controlled his wing.

Aquinas and Old Camberwell went slatherand whack all day with the Wells superiordefence giving them the edge in the last term,Shane Properjohn was lively up forward forthe Wells, Tim James (OK Warren?) stood outin defence as did Luke Gladman, with TravisHardman again having a top day on his wing. The Bloods were best served by Craig Glenniein defence, and on ballers, Cam Colliver andSean Flynn .

    TODAY'S GAMES

Banyule take on St Leos and the Animalswill be a tad worried about meeting thesection leader so soon after a shock defeat . Ican't hold out much hope for them todayeither, both sides will be better for the returnof their VAFA Reps, but the Bears have themomentum of a run away train, and I can'tsee them being stopped today. Banyule by 5goals .Monash Blues host Aquinas and, for all theirendeavour, will find the going tough againstthe Bloods, who would still give themselves achance of finals action after an indifferentstart . The Bloods should win thiscomfortably .

Ivanhoe Assumption meets Old Geelongand should have too much all round talent tobe troubled by the topsy turvey OGS. TheHoes are anxious to consolidate themselvesin the four at the moment and will not berelaxing their guard . Their mid field will bethe equal of OGGs talented group, and theirdefence more than up to the task of holdingtheir opponents . Hoes to take the 4 points by6/7 goals .Uni . Blacks are at home to Yarra Valley andwill win this one! Thought I'd get that in earlyJack! Yarra will test the Blacks with theirspeed all over the field, but do not have thedepth of experienced players to be able toprevent the home side winning by about 5goals or more .

  • old Carey and Old Camberwell clash intheir local Derby, which won't be much morethan a training run for the Wells

. Thepanthers are too much in potential mode andinsufficiently actual to trouble the visitors, who are travelling nicely after taking a coupleof rounds to settle in. Should be a nicepercentage booster for the Wells .

Reserves winners should be: Banyule,Monash Blues, Ivanhoe Assumption,Uni .Blaeks, & Old Camberwel l

5 YEARS AGO- 1996What a season it was in A Section . Who would havetipped at the start of the season that three of 1995'sfinalists Old Xaverians, Ormond and Old Scotch wouldbe sitting at the bottom of the A Section ladder after 8games .St Bernards (A Section) travelled to meet OldMelburnians confidently playing in second spot, andonly St Bernards inaccuracy even made the game close. They kicked 6.8 to 3 .0 in the first then 4 .14 to 8 .6 in thenext two, and then ran out winners 13 .25 (103) to OldMelburnians 13 .10 (88)

. Best were Juegan, J .Overmen,Vassallo (St Bernards) and Ellinghaus, Lovett, AThompson (Old Melburnians) .Despite windy conditions at the Beverley Hills Oval,Banyule (B Section) got home by two points from Theny-Penola, 16 .17 to 16 .15, in a high class game . JohnGilliam was best on ground and it was fitting that hekicked the winning goal . Others to star were O'Connell,O`Brien and Ryan for the visitors, and O'Halloran,Castaldi and Wrigglesworth (Therry-Penola) .D Section coaches were Garry Nicholson (Beaumaris),George Voyage (Caulfield Grammarians), Robert Bayley(Kew), David Rogers (Monash Blues), Martin Legge (OldCamberwell) Laurie Zarafa (Parkside), Derek Hine(S'bank) Steve Mooney (St Johns), Mark Flack (St LeosEmmaus) and Michael Farrell (University Reds).250 games to Mazenod's Ian Neil, one of the clubs mostfamous sons, now guiding the Club 18

    .

    A Section goal umpires were R. Richards, B . Jephson, W.

    Fowler, M . Richardson, G . Grigg, K. Pritcher, C . May, B .Nash, A. Simpson, A. Well, they turned

on a magnificent highscoring game to recordth . . . ..of the round, 307 points, and the greatest number ofgoals in a term

. Yes, tired and all, at the last change itwas OM's 11 .4 to Ormond 21 .13

CLUB XVIII SECTIO Nby Tony Robbins & David Windlow

Round 7 results yielded Tony a 70% success rate as thequest for top positions continued to fascinate followersof Club XVIII football . Today marks the half way markof the season, which is developing into a promoter'sdream .REVIEW OF ROUND 7SECTION 1 .Leaders, De La Sa lle proved too talented for OldScotch who were valiant in defeat. At half time De LaSalle held a thirty three point lead, which Old Scotchhad trimmed to twenty four points by the final siren.Best for the winners were ; high marking forward BradRobinson and skipper "Bomber" Jennings on the backline. Best for Old Scotch were Geoff Junkeer andMathew Steele.Prahan drew, away from Brunswick as their gameprogressed and at the final siren Prahran were in frontby one hundred and thirteen points . In the second halfPrahran had seventeen scoring shots while theirdefenders denied Brunswick a single score . Best forPrahran were David Green, defenders, Craig Johnsonand Coby Jones. Up forward, "Cougar" AKA BrettCartlidge again showed his class with 10 goals .Mazenod were stirred to victory through the loquacityof Coach "Barge" Brigland, whose delcit tones reallymotivated his players . In a low scoring game Mazenodalways held the ascendancy over Therry Penola whowent down by twenty nine points. Best for the winnerswere "goal of the century" and Captain, "Spider"Smythe . All I can say about Therry Penola's best is thatthey were, an athletic left footed wing man and abespectacled defender. They at least know who they areand maybe some communication from the Lyon'smouth will tell our readers their names! !Old Xaverians rose to fourth place as a consequence oftheir one hundred and twelve point victory over OldBrighton . In what could be an ominous sign for otherclubs the stars for Old Xaverians up forward wereMatthews and Hardwick .St Kevins, who led all day against a depleted OldMelburnians, won the game by twenty three points .The best player for St Kevins wore number 16 andNikatis was named best for the losers .SECTION 2University Blacks an d Marcellin played a very evengame, which held the interest of all until the final sirengave University Blacks victory by twelve points. Thesecond half saw the students gain supremacy althoughMarcellin never conceded . Best players for the Blackswere Timothy Kitchen, Michael Jones (ruck), RichWilliams and Ross Greig, Captain Mark O'Sullivan,Nathan Matthews and Maurice Becchetti were best.Old Trinity were able to defeat Whitefriars by ninepoints in a low scoring match.

Monash Blues started well against Old Geelong and athalf time they appeared certain winners as they held athirty point lead. The third quarter saw a spiritedrevival by Old Geelong, who trailed at the last change byjust eleven points . Monash rallied in the last and wenton to win by thirty points . Monash were well served byA .B.C. commentator Anthony Forbes, Luc Colombies,David O'Brien and Luke Woods, who kicked three goals .For Old Geelong, Barraclough and Buntine did best .Old Ivanhoe and Collegians played a high standardmatch befitting the leading two sides. A big thirdquarter effort set up the eventual Old Ivanhoe victory. Two goals against the wind and an inspiring smother byMark Wilson lifted the whole team. After a nail bitingfinish Old Ivanhoe won by six points to maintain theirundefeated record. They were well served by "Bopp"Stewart, Michael Tozer, Vaughan English (ruck) and byCaptain Paul Sigley. Collegians were well served byCaptain David Lumley and the consistent BrendanWains .Despite inaccurate kicking, Old Essendon defeated StLeos by twenty three points .PREVIEW ROUND 8SECTION 1Prahran desperate to regain lost ground should be toostrong for Old Scotch, who must negate theopportunities given to Brett Cartlidge .The inability of Brunswick to play a solid four quartersof football must be a worry to their match committee .Today they will be again under seige as St Kevins willbe desperate to consolidate the double chance. I selectSt Kevins to win convincingly.Leaders, De La Salle should be talented enough todefeat an improving Mazenod.Therry Penola await Old Xaverians, who like manyclubs before them will not find the Oak Park conditionsto their liking. With so much at stake I predict that OldXaverians will rise to the occasion and will win thismatch.Old Melburnians should strike little difficulty indefeating Old Brighton even though visiting teams havenot fared well on the Brighton Beach oval for manyseasons .

SECTION 2Even though Whitefriars showed improved form in thelast round, I still believe Marcellin will prove tootalented for them today.Neither, Old Trinity nor Old Essendon has shownconsistent form this season, although each hasimpressed at times . Selecting the winner of this gameis no easy task. I select Old Trinity simply because theyare playing at home .The match of the day will be the academic clash on the

  • Brens Oval betcveen, Unive _ ;y " and MonashBlues . Each team shapes as a potential finalist andtoday should reveal a lot about their comparativestrength. The outcome of the ruck duels between,Michael Jones (Blacks) and Ed Bryden could have amarked influence on the game. The Blacks mid filedhas been their strength and the sparkling form ofAnthony Forbes assisted by Bryce Collier could severelytest it today . At home a favour the Blacks to winnarrowly.Leaders, Old Ivanhoe should record their eighth win ina row today against Old Geelong, who lack the depth oftalent necessary to topple Old Ivanhoe .collegians should return to the winning list today withvictory over St Leos, who are finding the rigours of Club,xWII football quite demanding.Round 7 results have been conveyed to me by six clubsand by two umpires as well as by two matches Iwitnessed.
