completed to have everything in place for the firstseason of the new century.HEAT POLICY

Just aver a week ago the Executive reactedswiftly to criticism levelled at the AFL in regard to itsslowness in dealing with matches being played inheat wave conditions as well as our awareness ofimplementing sensible risk management policies~ooner rather than later. As a result the followingPolicy is now in pTace .

On a match day where the temperature is fore-cast to reach or exceed 30 degrees clubs andumpires must ring the Quit Info-Line between 9,3 0'd 11 .00 am on match day to check if the condi-

Ins of the policy are to be followed . If so -`• The length of each quarter shall be 22 minutes)!us time on . 2. The length of the '/, time break-hall be 20 minutes (to be strictly enforced) . 3 . Thecngth of the I/, time break shall be 10 minutes (t

obe strietly, enforced) . 4 . Water carriers will be per_Mitted to be on the playing arena during play, pro-. ided they do not go within 50 metres of play, andclo not interfere in any way with play. 5. Field~Impires will also be encouraged to delay the re-onmiencement of play after a goal by 20-30 sec-mds so as to allow water carriers some additionalo provide water to players .

t seems like just a few days ago that OldXaverians were drinking from their. what wa s

it, tenth consecutive premiership cup? Anotherlong hot summer has come and gone (almost),the VAFA has a heat policy in place, and to andbehold its round one of the first season of thenew millennium. Or, the first round of the lastseason in the old millennium, depending onwhich way you look at it .

But let's leave the hypothesising andphilosophising to the patient oxes of this slow-turning earth, and concentrate on the footy - A-section once again has a lot to offer seasonedamateur footy followers, and 2000 promises anexciting year in the Victorian Amateur FootballAssociation's premier division .

Amateur football certainly had a lot to offerin 1999 - just ask the AFL. B-section clubBeaumaris had two players drafted to the elitegrade, while at least three A-section teams canlay claim to players now getting their shot inthe big league .

Newcomers to A-section, last year's B-sec-tion runners-up Melbourne High School OldBoys, have had the pleasure of watchingCameron Bruce make an excellent start to hisAFL career at Melbourne. The similarlv-talent-ed Matt Lucas, who impressed all last yearplaying both senior and Under 19 football for StKevins, is well placed for big things at theWestern Bulldogs . St Bernards' all-rounderAndrew RRerrington, overlooked by father Garyand the West Coast Eagles, was drafted byCarlton . Congratulations to all these amateurplayers and their clubs. Interestingly, the offi-cial AFL 2000 Season Guide only saw fit tocredit the VAFA for Merrington - David Spriggs,Murray Pitts and Cam Bruce are respectivelylisted as former U18 VMFL, and St Kilda andMelbourne reserves players . Lucas was selectedin the Rookie Draft.

The traffic isn't all one way, however. FormerAFL players are turning back to the amateurs, and the competition is once again littered withthe big and not-so-big names of days gone by :Andy Gowers is rumoured to be fronting up forthe reigning premiers this year, former Fitzroywild man (in looks, not necessarily in nature),Mark Zanotti, could well pull on a St Kevinsjumper before the season's out ; and St2

Bernards nearly snared former Bomber PetcCransberg .

Of course, there could be dozens of other biname players running around the A-sectio:this year, all unbeknownst to your scribeCoaches are still trying to coax the odd playeor two to pull on the guernsey, and no goo, coach in his right mind is going to reveal all thtrumps he has up his sleeve to opposition club,in round one, is he ?

With all that in mind, this column will loolat the various comings and goings at A-sectiorclubs over the coming weeks, but we can welcome new coaches Gary Connolly (Marcellin)Kevin Tibaldi (Old Ivanhoe), Brendan Masor(Old S cotch) and Lee Adamson (UniversityBlues) . Leigh Carlson also deserves a welcomeback to A-section . The former Collegians coach, now in his second decade of involvement inamateur football, returns to the elite grade withOld Trinity, who will unfurl their premiershipflag before the grand final replay againstMHSOB today. Best wishes to Warren Fall, too, coach of the Unicorns .

Mike McArthur-Allen, Tim O'uhaughn-essy, Garry Foulds and Neil Ross, the remain-ing A-section coaches, all have good reason toapproach the season optimistically, but as theRedlegs boss will surely tell you, its all a bitacademic until you win the last game of theseason . Good luck to all A-section clubs andplayers in season 2000 .

Selections: Old Trinity, Old Ivanhoe, Old :'.Melburnians, St Bernards and Old Xaverians .

St . Bernards - congratulates Luke Gollanton his 200th senior game . Luke is the club'slongest serving captain . 3 time club B&F, com-petition leading goalkicker, VAFA representa-tive, representative vice-captain and A SectionWoodrow Medallist . Luke continues to be loyalSt . Bernard's clubman . He has achieved almostall the spoils of amateur football. It has been apleasure of the club and its supporters to havewatched Luke play our great game for 200games .

V-Ahe season of 2000 is now upon us, and the,", Y2K bug and those fireworks seem a world

away. Clubs are refreshed, enthusiastic andoptimistic about the year ahead . Just wish thisrain and cool weather would hurry up, I haven'tbeen able to sleep properly in 6 months! Best ofluck for all clubs and players this year .

Based on the 'oil' from my various coatpullers, we'll look at how clubs have fared overthe hot months .

Colle ians - The Lions will be looking to getoff to a 'flyer' like their start to 1999 . Seniorcoach Tim Hart has been working to ensure theirsecond-half fade out does not occur again .

De La Salle - Old boy Paul Cooper (exHawthorn) is hell-bent on returning the club toA Section after a disappointing 1999 season .Rumours are that thev've had more numbers onthe track than Bart Cummings has Cup tro-phies . Nothing less than promotion will suffice .

Mazenod - The boys from Glen Waverleyappear to have had a more settled pre-season,with new coach Dave Murray bringing some well-needed fitness regimes and tactical nous to theclub . Big things are expected .

North Old Boys - Frank Dunell takes thereins again this year, with pre-season also seeinglarge numbers in attendance . NOBs appear tohave recruited well, picking up some very talent-ed youngsters from Uni Blues' U19 grand finalside of 1999. The question is: have they recov-ered from the last half 'smoko' in Rd 18 of1999??

431d B righton - Dale Tapping and his boyswill still be smarting from that last quarter fadeout in last year's lst Semi . They believed aPrelim' berth was theirs by right . Time for themto fix that hiccup and go one, maybe two betterthis year .

Old I-laileybury - With the off-field unrestfinally being put to bed. OH will be wanting somerevenge for their relegation in 1999 . Coach MickDwyer has plenty of cattle at his disposal and, combined with some exciting 'unders' comingthrough, it will a case of 'stand back and let thedog see the rabbit' .

Old Mentonians - Haven't been able to findmuch info about the Panthers . New coach SvendSamild will no doubt be busting his hump tomake them competitive in B Section, after beingsoundly beaten in the C Section GF, but as we allknow, the higher you go, the harder it gets .

Old Paradians - A tough pre-season hasfaced the boys from Bundoora. Peter Bedford willbe hoping to keep that momentum going from anamazing second-half of 1999, winning 9 of theirlast 12, culminating in that stunning last halfturnaround against NOBs in Rd 18 (yes, the_vrestill talking about it!!) .

Ormond - Retirements have apparently hitthem very hard this year . Stephen Grace and hiscoaching panel has been going 'gangbusters' try-ing to replenish the playing stocks . They'll belooking for a better return this year.

Whitefriars - Des Meagher has been bringingthe youngsters through slowly for the last coupleof years, and the C Section premiership was thereward for all the club's hard work. B Section isa much different proposition, however, andthey'll be wanting to consolidate and launch anattack on A Section.

The 'satchel swingers' (bookies) have frameda market for the flag, based on last year's form, whispers, strengths /weaknesses of ligaments, weight of money and, of course, the late mail halfan hour before the first . Thought I'd gather theirthoughts on the 'magoos' as well . Please don'ttake offence at the prices, and no, I'm not takingbets !

VALE - LIONEL LITTLEJOH NPopular identity of the Ormond AFC, especially the U 17's, died peacefully at the Epworth Hospital lastDecember after a short illness . He was 83 . Despite Lionel's age was still an active worker for the cluband timekeeper for the junior sides . Umpires were not Lionel's favourite people and it was notuncommon for him to voice his opinion from the timekeeper's box . His passing is a sad loss to boththe Junior and Senior Clubs for which he was the only dual Life Member .

Tips

SeniorsWell, it's time to plunge thyself into the abyss .

Here it goes : Old Haileybury would appear tohave too much going for them to allow Collegiansto win, although it's never easy to win at Harry'splace . OH by 38 points . Ormond have beaten Oldparadians twice in the last 2 years at the GarveyOval, however, today I'm hoping their winningrun will end . OP to win by 9 points . Whitefriarswill unfurl their C Section flag in last year's GFreplay, and there is no way they will lose this oneagainst Old Mentonians. They'll be too good by

48 points . De La Salle don't lose too many atMalvern . Today will be no different and the_v llgreet the judge by 28 points . The final game's atough one . The new recruits of NOBs or the newcoach at Mazenod? Heads or tails?? Head 'em upand it's Mazenod by 4 points .

Acome to the new millenium (depending o nhow you look at it) and welcome to what

promises to be another exciting season ofAmateur Football arguably the best football inthis state .

The Pakis and Indies are gone, the whiteflannelled boys are in NZ, we are here about toembark on the first round of the new century, who knows what might happen in the next cou-ple of months let alone the decade or the centu-ry, but being a staunch Amateur supporter andfollower I'm sure our code can only grow andprosper.

On a personal level TB leavesSouthbank/Prahran after 3 great years and havejoined Beaumaris closer to home and in a differ-ent role . Thanks to all at PAFC for a fun time anda great learning experience .

We sav farewell to mv co-scribe friend andboss of the last couple of years Ken Bremnerwho has decided after many years to have a welldeserved rest . I will miss you KB as everyone elsewill your infectious nature and great sense ofhumour helps to make you the Legend that youare . He turns the Big 50 in a couple of weeks willnot be lost to us totally and will make a couple ofguest appearances during the year with some ofhis well known dares .

Whitefriars and Old Mentonians leave us forgreener pastures and we wish them well at thehigher level, while we welcome AJAX andBulleen-Temp back up to the level that bothhave seen before .

C-Section certainly takes on a bit of anAFL/VFL tone this year with the appointments ofTony Free (Pralaran) Tony Morwood (OldGeelong) Wayne Harmes (AJAX) and JimDurnan (Beaumaris) . Their experience andknowledge adds to the high calibre of the coach-es already involved in this grade .

I wish all clubs, players, officials, and sup-porters all the very best for the forthcoming sea-son, let's make it enjoyable, with no controver-sies , to help further contribute to the great gamethat is VAFA Football .

PREVIEW

Remember this is Round I and thes ethoughts are mine and mine alone please feelfree to crititise and bag me as the year goes on .

All comments greatly appreciated and will betaken in the correct context, this is meant to bea serious but light hearted column .

So here we go 6 months of hard work comesto fruition today ;

Last's years preliminary finalalists the OGSwelcome the rampaging AJAX to Como a groundthat should suit the Jackas running free flowinggame, unless you've changed that Harmesy. Theacquisition of Nick Gold from Sandringhamshould be a bonus for the visitors and if they canget someone called Kirzner in there as well theyare well on the way. OGS are notoriously slowstarters, maybe the new coach can alter that . Ibelieve a few have gone, but they are tall and willlove the dry conditions but alas I don't think thatwill be enough and think AJAX will love the wideopen spaces and will open their C account today .Sorry Fraz .

Hmmm tough one this one two teams lastyear who promised so much but delivered so lit-tle . St Bedes Mentone Tigers await Prahran atBrindisi Street . Part of TB still lingers at the TwoBlues and I wish them well. Their numbers attraining has been excellent, they have ToorakPark now, an added bonus, but is the qualityquite right and do they have the young playerswho can run all day to back up the heart of bigKIP. The Tigers would have been totally disap-pointed last year, I saw them in scintillating formtwice . They have the talent, I believe Macca isburning on the track which really helps theircause . I'm going the soft way out in this gameand tipping a draw .

Another interesting one at Packer sees GlenEira welcome Bulleen-Temp. Definitely the bestside out of the four last year the Saints and prob-ably unlucky not to make it . Lost some closeones that they should have won . Believe pre sea-son has not been that flash, lack of numbers aconcern but they are a proud club and PaulBeddoe is a good coach so they will be competi-tive . Newly promoted Bulleen had a great yearlast season until that last game but they cantake solace in the fact that the Jackas were vir-tually unbeatable that day . We believe they stillhave James and Matthews so they will give anyside a run for their money and I think even awayfrom home 4 points will be on the board tonight .

Hampton Rovers another one that tears atmy heart strings make the long trek out to Oak

Page 12: The Amateur Footballer, Week 1, 2000

park. to tackle Therry . The loss of Browne andParkinson will hurt the Rovers but this will bepartially offset by the return of Chris Scarlettand the Michael Fletcher and maybe SimonFarning . The influx also of some of the kids fromtheir all conquering U19'S Premiership side willalso strengthen the cause and possibly at thisstage makes them the Flag Favourites . Therry

penola finished on a bright note with a big winin their last game and I believe their practicematch form has been quite reasonable . Thereturn of a few players will help their cause, theywill be strong and competitive, any side coachedby john Toohey is like that, but I'll stick with the

visitors. And so to the final game of this the first'

round . Always save the best till last they say.Ivanhoe/Assumption await Beaumaris . Longtrek for the Beauy Boys never been there before .The Hoes set up their finals appearance last yearwith a terrific first 6-7 weeks then somewhat fellapart only to scrape in at the end . Competitive

,but disappointing in the first semi TB really feltthey had an ageing list (no harm meant to any-one) and really had to work hard over summer tocompensate for that to remain in the top eche-lon . Whether they have or not today will tell . Therelegated Beaumaris have been very selective intheir recruiting (i .e Me) and are looking forward

to a good season . New coaches managers andplayers make for some excitement and a bit of abuzz around the place and that is how it will beat Oak Street tonight, even though yours trulywill be miles away at Kallorama . Always a loyal-ist Beaumaris to win .

PRESS CORRESPONDENTS .You support has always been terrific and is

most appreciated . Know it is hard to get into aroutine so early in a season, but give your cluband players some publicity all the time by feed-ing me info every week .

With the Amateur Record now being availableon a Thursday afternoon our schedules are verytight . I know it puts the pressure on you but Imust have your reports by 8pm at the latest ona Sunday night repeat 8pm Sunday night.

I will do my best to put in and mention obvi-ously match reports. including anything amus-ing that may have happened in your particulargame, milestones social events etc . etc .

I can be contacted on 9553 1561(Fax orphone) on email at [email protected] on the mobile on 0412-213541 . Go for it, helpme make this the most read column in therecord . Good luck .

'elcome back to the epicentre of VAFA foot-ball, and what a season there is ahead of

us . Greetings to St Leo's, Banyule, Oakleigh, and La Trobe, farewell and best wishes to YarraValley, Parkside, Kew, and Thomastown .

Good to be back as a ten Club contest, and itwill be interesting to watch the effect of the earlystart and the torrid February/early Marchweather on availability lists as the season pro-gresses . This year's will be a terrific competition,so every best wish to players, administrators, and supporters .

THE GAMESOakleigh AFC v Aq' as OG

Oakleigh's coach, Chris Moore, has had goodnumbers involved in a solid pre season, and theClub has stabilization at this level as its firstobjective for 2000 . The vastly experienced LaurieAghan has taken over at Aquinas . and his savvyand their work ethic should add up to diabolicaltrouble for opposition tea-ins . Aquinas are hellbent on making the finals this year for the firsttime in Dl, and that goal should see them takethe points today by 4/5 goals, but they'll need towatch Oakleigh who play the tricky Scammellexceedingly well .

Old Camberwell v Old CareyMacleay Park, the Wells' home for the year

while the Barnard is being refurbished, has hadwell populated paddocks in the lead up to today .Matt Hanson has been pretty happy with theWells preparation and the Club is determined toput the injury plagued '99 behind them. The C'slost the plot in the middle of '99, and their cohe-sion faltered, even so they still took the last spotin the fmais . New coach, Michael Zemski, isdetermined to revitalize the C's, regardless oftheir wonderfully laid back approach to pre sea-son activity . The Wells are more evenly advancedthan the C's right now, and will win by 4 goals.

Monash Blues v St Leo's EmmausOur condolences to the Blues on the passing

of the legendary Keith Frearson, he will be sadlymissed . Dave Rogers & the Blues were devas-tated at not making the GF last year and are

utterly determined to make amends, with a sideeven better than last year's . St Leo's new coach,David Miller, is off to a top start, with numberson the track and quality players returning afterabsences in '99 . The Two Blues are hoping tosee a return to the glory days of the mid 90's .Clearly the match of the day, I'll say Monash bya couple of points .

Caulfield Gr. v BanyuleThe Fields have begun well under new coach,

Dean Anderson, with good training turn outs, some talented U19's coming through, and bol-stered by players returning from injuries .Banyule also have a new on-field boss in GregWhitcroft, whose good credentials and very dif-ferent attitude are catching his players' atten-tion . Both sides are confident of showingimprovement from last year, so this, and theMonash/St Leo's match will be a good indicatorof the C to D l relativities . I'll go for the Fields by2 goals in this one, largely because they play thesometimes difficult Glenhuntly so well.

La Trobe Uni . v Old Essendon Gr.Andrew Sutherland is hoping for a more aus-

picious start by the Trobers this year than theyhad last; the story is that will happen, with goodsized training squads, plus some talented new-comers . At Grammar, Gavin Keane has 'main-tained the rage' over OEG's narrow loss in the1999 first semi, and the whole Club is on a mis-sion to avenge that defeat . Should be a top gamethis, on the huge Main Oval, Grammar may takea while to adjust their possession game, but theyare a very accomplished outfit and should runout with a 4/5 goal win .

RESERVESToday's winners should be ; Aquinas, Old

Camberwell, St Leo's, Caulfield, and OldEssendon .

0 'What a summer . There have been changesgalore and some amazing tales.

We must start by congratulating Michael Allen

-I nd Steele Irish on their promotion to the VFL .~lichael umpired the D Section Grand Final las t

'i r and won the Golden Whistle Award so he fully

deseives his chance at the big time.

Steele was the A Section boundary umpire andreceives a second opportunity at VFL level .

Further congratulations should go to formerVAFA umpires Matthew Head and Chris Donlon .Nfatty umpired the AFL reserves Grand Final lastyear while Chris was in control of the TAC CupGrand Final and won the VFL's umpire of the year.

VAFA Umpires' Advisor Michael Sneddon said itwas further proof that the amateurs is a great start-mg point for elite umpires . "It's great . If you addCorin Rowe who's umpiring senior footy, SimonMeredith who did the TAC Cup Grand Final in1998 and Cameron Nash who is also on the VFL listand we've had some incredible success when itcomes to promoting our best young umpires," hesaid .

Locally, Peter Gersch has been replaced asassistant advisor by Justin Toohey . Peter steppeddown because of work commitments .

The goal umpiring coaching will be shared byMichael Lentini and Shane Herbert. They replacedJohn Ha ll .

Phil Calill is the new fitness advisor after JamesVan Beek's business interests reduced his time at'training .

! All umpires were saddened to learn of the pass-ing of Monash Blues official Keith Frearson . Hewas a true legend of the VAFA and always treatedthe umpires well . He will be missed by many peopleand the VAFAUA passes on its sincere condolencesto everyone who knew Keith . A reminder to allumpires to wear a black armband in recognition ofKeith this weekend . We also pass on our thoughts

to Brian 'Benny' Goodman at the passing of hismother. Benny umpired and advised with amazingsuccess with the VAFAUA and our thoughts arewith him in his time of sorrow .

Craig O'Donoghue won the annual aquathonon March 14 . This year the 400m swim and 4kmrun was staged at the Caulfield pool because of thesyringe problem on Elwood Beach and the eventwas split into two heats . Craig won the first heatafter coming from 10th entering the run and incred-ibly, Daniel Ha ll iwell just missed out on overall vic-tory by winning the second heat by one second less .Daniel's split times were 7 .50 for the swim and14 .54 for the run compared to CraiDs 8 .34 swimand 14 .09 run .

It could have been an even tighter contest if TimSutcliffe, who led Craig by 80m approximately onethird of the way around the run hadn't taken awrong turn! Dianne Whiteley won the women'ssection with a 7 .39 swim and 16 .49 run . PaulLamble came close to drowning taking 12 .57 tocomplete the swim .

0 The annual general meeting seemed to last for-ever but covered plenty and of course the whitewacker award proved a real hit . We'd love to printwhy Dirk Kramer won the barbie doll but unfortu-nately the nature of his offence is defamatory so wesuggest those who don't know ask someone aboutit . You'll split your sides laughing if you do .

0 There's been plenty of rule changes this year sowe'll cover them in the coming weeks as well assome exciting news on the umpiring front . Staytuned . . .

0 This vear's deadline for copy has changed soanyone wishing to give us some info should havetheir yarns in by 5pm Monday . you can e-mail orfax the story or tell us at training.

AI the worry about would we get to the line, arewe ready etc . etc . is thrown into action today

in D2 of the newly re-structured D sections of theVAFA .

On reflection I suppose all teams are new for2000 as D2 was not with us in 1999 .

New coaches for 2000 are the following andbefore the preview of today's matches a welcome toTim Pontefract (West Brunswick), Ken Wood(Mentone), Matt Sexton (Salesian OC) and TimKillworth (Yarra Va lley) . Good luck to you all inyour new challenges for this coming year. The "oldhands" at the caper return in Laurie Zarafa(Parkside), while Grant Hammond (Fitzroy Reds),Brett Mcilwraith (Peninsula OB), Kane Bowden(Uni . Blacks), Serge D'Angelo ( Kew) and GordonBurrows (Thomastown) front up again in the pur-suit of greater successes than last year. Best wish-es are extended to you all as well .

Weather fine and tracks fluctuating will be theorder of the day .

Preview

Parkside host Peninsula OB at Pitcher Parkwith both teams raring to get the points today . ThePirates will still be smarting from last year's brandFinal loss and will have plenty to prove today . Theirform last year was very consistent, and with a dis-tinct home ground advantage at Mt . Eliza theyshould be looking at a top four finish. Howevertoday they travel to Alphington where the Red Devilswill be keen to make amends for a disappointing1999 . The return of Laurie Zarafa, who took them tothe finals previously, will be an added spur, and adefinite keeness to "bounce back" will give thembite, however today the Pirates, who shook off the"travel bug" in 1999 will salute .

West Brunswick clash with Mentone for what Idare say is a first for both clubs (I stand to be cor-rected), The Westies last year looking the goods forthe major part of the year, however falling at the lasthurdle to challenge for the flag. At home they play aslick brand of football and with new coach TimPontefract at the helm this should not differ. TheVultures will rely on the fantastic blend of youthfulexuberance and wily experience that makes up theirteam. Not far off the mark in 2000 after a season inD section proper in 1998 the Vultures under KenWood will be hard to stop in fine conditions .Travelling seems to affect them very little but todaythe Westies should get home .

E White re-visited in this one where FitzroyReds back at Peterson Oval host Uni. Blacks .Plenty of feeling can be assured as the Redz as

underdogs put paid to any thoughts the Blacks hadof charging into a Grand Final spot, with a resound-ing win in the 1st semi last year . With a win apiecein 99 at respective home venues little previous formexists . Both sides began extremely well last yearand were consistent throughout, with maybe theBlacks holding the edge . Grant Hammond will havethe boys fired being back at "home" although a lackof training time will diminish any home groundadvantage . The Blacks on the other hand have plen-ty of numbers (ie .teamlist) and with plenty return-ing from 99 are my tip today in a thriller .

Salesian began 99 at a rapid rate but mid-sea-son fell away and were unable to maintain the rage .Matt Sexton steps into the successful shoes of PeterTurley after acting as assistant in recent years, andwill have a good blend of youth and experience towork with . At home they play well and there is a def-inite advantage, although Kew are no strangers totravel (E-White 99) and have proven in the pastwhen their backs are to the wall they lift a notch .The K's will need all guns blazing today if they areto hold off a talented Salesian . and on a hunch I'llback them to open their account .

In the final match two D section clubs from 99renew acquaintances . Yarra Valley travel toThomastown and will go there in the knowledgethat they defeated the Bears twice in 99, both inhigh scoring affairs an important advantage. TheBears however will know that 99 is now past histo-ry and that today marks another chapter, and moreimportantly another opportunity to erase 99 fromtheir memories . There is bound to be a big crowd atMain Street Oval and the Bears will not disappointtheir loyal band of followers by going hard all day,but I fear despite all of their best efforts they will notovercome a slick Bushrangers unit today .

LOOKING BACKby Noel Rundle

5 YEARS AGO - 199 5President David Burnes welcomed new clubs,

Beaumaris, Warringal (an U .19 composite team),Swinburne Institute and Hawthorn Citizens andapplauded Eltham for making the transition from ClubXVIl l football .

The Executive had introduced a geographic struc-ture for all clubs below D section in the hope that byreducing a hefty travel requirement clubs may be ableto attract new players .

QUIT had become the major sponsor. PresidentDavid Burnes was delighted with the association andwas confident it would be a long and successful part-nership .

4th the season being brought forward to sui tsome event being held in Sydney in September ,

the normally frenetic preseason has managed to beeven more so . Isn't it funny though, by the end ofthe year, most people have an absolute "gutfull" ofthe season but within a matter of weeks after fin-ishing find themselves longing for a bit of footyagain . Bring it on !

Preview

With the mixing and matching that occurredover the preseason, it really does look like that D3will prove to be a particularly even grade, with noclear cut favourites and most importantly, no easygame . Having said that . my feeling is that the teamsto watch will be (in no particular order),Powerhouse . Williamstown and Monash Gryphons .Hope this provides the other seven coaches withenough motivation ammunition .

The first game for preview sees Elsternwickhost Albert Park . Elsternwick were pretty competi-tive last year without really threatening to runamok . Club legend, "Lethal" Leigh Murphy will bekeen to get of to a good start, particularly at home .Albert Park would probably still be smarting formlasts year's grand final defeat . None the less, their1999 season brought back a lot of pride back intothe club and they plan to keep the momentumgoing . Home ground advantage counts for a fair bitat this time of (lets refer to it as rule number one)and consequently think the Wicks might get theseason of on a good note .

Albert Park's pain was inversely proportional toEley Parks ecstasy from last years F Grade GrandFinal. Any side coached by Marty Hook shouldnever be written off and so it panned out with theSharks overcoming a huge '/, time deficit to win amonumental game . They get the opportunity tounveil their flag when they host Hawthorn . TheHawks were competitive last year and in finals con-tention until late in the season . It may well be thebattle of the spearheads as veteran Adam Lenarcicand Big Dan Lauletta battle it out for their respec-tive clubs . The emotion of the flag unfurling mightjust be enough to get the Sharks over the line .

The third game for review sees University HighSchool Old Boys host Powerhouse . Uni High were

D3 SECTIONby il l

a little disappointing last year, mixing up some highprofile scalps with less noteworthy performances .The House had a very slow start to the season butcame home like a freight train to be terribly unluckyto miss the finals. As mentioned before, I fancy theHouse a bit this year (assuming the bush telegraphinformation is right), and expect them to record avaluable on the road victory.

Williamstown host Richmond in yet anothereven match up . Willy got of to a great start last year, had a terrible run in the middle of the season, andwere beginning to come good when the siren sound-ed for the end of the year. Richmond were simplyunable to get their season going last year, winningsome big games but not stringing many games in arow . If Richmond can recapture their form of 1998they will be very difficult to beat but, taking intoaccount rule number 1, 1 expect Williamstown tohold to much firepower and record a win.

Finally, Monash Gryphons take on St . Johnsdown in Caulfield . Monash were in the final's mixfor most of the season and ended up only marginal-ly short of the action . Coach Gary Ryan has left theclub after a number years and no doubt will besorely missed . His shoes have been filled by JackMcDonald, a great replacement if ever there wasone . St . Johns were another side that was competi-tive without being overly threatening last year andmight take a little bit to get going. Taking that intoaccount, as well as rule number 1, and my liking forMonash's ability, have to take the home side .Correspondent s

21come to this year's season of D4 footy . .Ihope everyone made it through unscathed

because your scribe and this report almost didn't .As always a new year brings new hope, antici-

pation and a decent serving of optimism, some-times justified but often misplaeed, as the next fewmonths will undoubtedly show! The shape andname of the former F grade has changed for the

.2000 season including an expansion to twelvesides and the inclusion of two completely newteams . On that note, a welcome to Bentleigh andS outh Melbourne Districts on their joining theAmateur competition and the best of luck on yourcampaigns for the year.

Preview

North Brunswick are back in the lower gradeand face a stern test first up, taking on OldWestbourne . The Warriors were clearly the bestside in the competition for the home and away sea-son last year only to fall short come finals time .They are a side with a lot to prove this year andshould start with a win this week . NorthBrunswick will be far from easy beats but theWarriors should be able to so enough .

Two sides that had a competitive seasons lastyear, Mt Lilydale and Brunswick, meet in thenext match out at Mt Lilydale . The Rams camegood towards the end of the '99 season whilst the'Wickers fell away slightly after a promising begin-ning. Mt Lilydale will be looking to keep thismomentum going, particularly following the strongperformance of their reserves, and notch up winnumber one .

Another side who played a part in the finalsaction last year, S t Marys, host Eltham in RoundOne .The Saints put a halt to the Turtles charge atthe end of last season in a crackerjack game and

I'm sure both teams will be keen for this returnbout . The Turtles reserves took home the flag in'99 and the club is hoping this success will flowthrough and I think it just might this week and seethem sneak home, onlyjust .

In the fourth game Bulleen host another sidereturning to the bottom grade, Swinburne . TheCobras were desperately unlikely to miss a finalsberth last year after a slow start and finished theyear off in fine style . The Swinburne boys will belooking to kick things off on a good note butBulleen at home might just have their measure .

Bentleigh make their first appearance in D4and host VV'erribee, due to the 'Bees ground prob-lems . The form of the 'Bees last year was hard tofollow but another year's experience may have cor-rected this inconsistency. Bentleigh have comestraight from the Southern League and wouldexpect to be very competitive . I think might be thecase this week and they should be good enough toaccount for Werribee .

The other side joining D4 from the SouthernLeague, South Melbourne I3istricts, face SyndalTally Ho in this week's last game . Syndal havealso come back after time in the higher gradesmeaning both sides would be optimistic going inthis match . In what is a toss of the coin the homeground advantage might just be enough to get theTally Ho boys over line in their first hit out .

Good luck to all involved this week and for therest of the season .

CLUB XVIII SECTIONby Norm Nugent

W tv elcome to football in the third millennium!ith the advent of the season hopes ar e

high and each team can (and does) evince rea-sons why the premiership will be theirs onAugust 5 !

Success in Amateur football is oftenephemeral and the vicissitudes of club fortunesare reflected by the fact that Melbourne HighSchool Old Boys . Old Haileybury, Thornbu ryand Glen Eira are no longer participants in ClubXVIII .

On the other hand we welcome new sides inWhitefriars and Rupertswood as well as ourreturnees St Bernards, Old IvanhoeGrammarians, Monash Il4fi,ites, Old Trinityand Old Geelong .

Preview of Round 1Section 1

St Kevins played well in many games lastseason but lacked the consistency of their oppo-nents today . Old B righton . I suspect that StKevins may have had the better preparation andso select them to win today .

In a reply of the last two Grand Finals, De LaSalle play Old Xaverians . Despite their minorpremiership last year De La Salle have onlydefeated Old Xaverians once in that time .

Old Xaverians believe they have coveredtheir player losses adequately and are confidentthey can win their fifth consecutive premiership ."The General" now an off the field marshal, toldme that he has to rally his remaining troops, whomay take a while to hit top form . OLD XAVERI-ANS are my selection .

Prahran are optimistic of gaining success inthis section despite the annual loss of players .Their first opponents, Old Melburnians havenever been able to play consistently good footballover seasons past . Despite their limited footballpreparation, I select Prahran .

Old Scotch meet Mazenod, who have beenpromoted after one season in Section 2 . OldScotch are always a competitive team and at

home they should prove too strong for Mazenod .Marcellin has the bye .

Section 2 .Last year's runners up Yarra Valley are at

home to Old Ivanhoe, who last played in ClubXVIII in 1996 . Despite Old Ivanhoe's numericalstrength, I favour Yarra Valley to win .

Near neighbours, Therry Penola and StBernards play on the J .P. Fawkner Oval, wherevisiting sides always find difficulty in meetingground conditions . Therry Penola, who finishedthird last season, may take time to adjust to thecoaching of Tony Crotty and to the loss of somekey 1999 players . St Bernards have missed thelast two seasons and may take time to settledown to winning football . I select Therry Penola! !

Debutantes in 1998, Old Camberwe ll meet1998 premiers, Monash Whites, who played in FSection last season. Selection of a victor is diffi-cult so I will gamble on Monash Whites possess-ing the ability to win the game .

Whitefriars play their first game at homeagainst Parkside, whose playing personnel haschanged a lot since 1999 . Coach Phil McEvoyhopes for success with his "Red Devils" but todayI select Whitefriars to open with a win .

Newcomers, Rupertswood make the longjourney east to Bulleen to play Old Trinity, whohave not played in Club XVIII since 1995 . Aftermany seasons in junior football, this will be thefirst outing by a Rupertswood team in an openage competition . With their Under 18 experienceRupertswood must have a good chance of defeat-ing Old Trinity, who despite their 1999 B Sectionpennant, were not strong in either Reserves orUnder 19 sections . Rupertswood are my selec-tion .

Old Geelong return to the competition for thefirst time since 1997 and will play Collegians, who did not enjoy success last season . As OldGeelong were prone to inconsistent perfor-mances over many seasons, I select Collegianswithout any confidence at all .

1 increasing to 12 teams and the inclusion of 4new U19 teams in Blue and Red Sections. Thisjust illustrates the strength of VAFA Football asthe leading competition in its commitment todeveloping junior football in Victoria. Note thatthe Victorian Representative U19 State game willbe played on June 11th, therefore, StateSelectors will be out in force from Round 1watching - good luck .

Preview -Section 1

St . K are reeling with a number of their starsout for the first few weeks but their coach,O'Shannassy believes they will win due to their"great conditioning and fitness" . Whereas, St .B's coach, O'Connor, says his team will "have ared hot go every week and at every contest" . St .K to win in a cliff-hanger. De La hosts the pro-moted Old H. De La has recruited hard this sea-son due to 2 sides and players promoted toseniors . They will look to Harrison, Spitall andDuggan to get them home. Old H. are buoyed bytheir practice match form and excited by the newbatch of 1st year players . De La just . OldParade would like to congratulate Mark Cosgriffin beginning his 5th year of U19 football . Hisexperience will help mould this young group intoa committed team . Coach Brown from OldBrighton is pleased with the blend of youth andexperience, predicting a final four finish . Old Bfor me . Uni Blue's coach Steve King, would notsay much about his team other than they havelarge numbers and 11 eligible players from lastyears Grand Final team . O .M.'s coach Holds-worth says recruitment has been good from theschool, Geelong Grammar and St . Michaels. Prematch form good. Uni Blues to win . The pre-miers Old Xav's are host to Marcellin . Mannyis quietly confident with the likes of Higgins,McCarthy, Scanlon and Colman - he should be!Marcellin is very confident after being promotedbut Old X should be too strong . Mazenod enter-tain Collegians . Reports from both clubs aresensational . Great numbers at training, confi-dent, teams blending well, good mix of youth andexperience . Both coaches are extremely opti-mistic for the coming season. Mazenod to win, only because they're at home .

Section 2

Last year's Blue section Premiers HamptonRovers are at home against Yarra Valley in whatshould be a clash between two of this year'sfinals contenders . The Bushrangers missed thefinals on percentage last season and are lookingfor bigger things under coach Rod Penaluna, butthe Rovers will be too good today and will win ina close one . Old Trinity host Old Carey at theHudson Oval with both teams looking to improveon their disappointing 1999 results . Whitefriarshave shown promising form in their preseasonmatches and will win today when they traveldown to the Banksia Reserve to take on MickDeaton's Beaumaris . MHSOB have the bve forRound 1 with the withdrawal of St BedesMentone Tigers. In a battle of the new teams tothe section Old Scotch takes on Old Ivanhoe .Old Scotch have been struggling for numbersover recent weeks and are hoping things willimprove as the season begins, but with the lossof key players to their senior team may struggletoday against an improved Old Ivanhoe .

Selections : Hampton Rovers, Old Carey,Whitefriars, and Old Ivanhoe .

Section (2) Blue

Monash Blues are at home to Glen Eira . TheBlues are looking forward to the season opener .Practice match form has been excellent and theyhave had a good influx of 1st year players. Downat Glen Eira there is a quiet confidence about thecoming season . The players are teaming welland are very committed . The Blues too strong athome . De La 2 is re-building with a large num-ber of 1st year players and is combining well.New coach Greg Buntine believes that their fit-ness and enthusiasm will get them over the line .Around at Caulfield, everything seems to be thesame as last year, with a good blend of youth andexperience . The Grammarians should be toostrong in this one . St . Leo's under DannySullivan are looking to capitalise on their terrificseason last year. The players have been verypositive and willing to do what has been asked ofthem so far, so just "do it" on the field. AtMentone, coach Winduss has been delightedwith the attitude and application of his team atthe moment . The practice game against Ormondwas terrific . St. Leo's though at home, toostrong . Ajax will enter season 2000 with a very

Page 44: The Amateur Footballer, Week 1, 2000

young team, But as coach Zuker states, theenthusiasm, tackling and endeavour has beenfantastic . South Melbourne Districts come intothe Amateurs for the first time and are hoping tobegin with a win . South Melbourne plays a verydisciplined hard running brand of football so thisshould be a very entertaining game . Un-fortunately for South, Ajax should win . Ormondcoach Hille has nicknamed his team the "mos-quito fleet" . Although a bit on the short side, they are extremely quick, tenacious and commit-ted at "man and ball". At Mentone, coachO'Connor is elated with the approach his youngcharges have taken this pre-season, culminatingwith the effort of a few players who turned out forthe seniors in last week's practice match .Ormond at home will win .

Section (2) Red

With four new teams this section should bewide open this year. Newcomers Old Essendontake on Therry Penola at the PEGS No .2 Oval .Old Essendon is looking to transfer the success

of their school boy sides into the U 19 section andcould be a real contender this year, they shouldaccount for Therry Penola today. In a replay oflast year's controversial grand final, premiersOld Camberwell will be keen to show that theydid deserved the top honours when they take onNorth Old Boys at home . In a fiery affair theWells will be triumphant by two or three goals.New team Bull een-Templestowe clash with lastseason's ninth placed team Aquinas, both teamswill be keen to start the new year with a win butthe Bullant's should be too good . Uni Blacks willbe expecting to get a win on the board when theymake the long journey out to Sunbury to take onRupertswood. Werribee have forfeited to(Beaumaris/St. Bedes Mentone) Tiger Sharks forthis week due to lack of numbers . The TigerSharks team being made up of a hybrid team ofthe two clubs after St. Bedes Mentone Tigerswere unable to field a team in their own right .

Selections : Old Essendon, Old Camberwell ,Bull een-Templestowe, and Uni Blacks .

The new FIDA season kicks off this SundayApril 2 . The new season sees 17 teams com-

p,,ting from 13 clubs with 4 of our clubsGeelong, Karingal, Bendigo and Broadmeadowsfielding 2 teams .

This year we matches are being held at bothElsternwick Park and Royal Park North(Western and Ransford Ovals - Parkville) .Thanks are extended to the North Old Boysclub for their assistance in past seasons withthe use of their ground . With the increase of thenumber of teams for 2000 it was decided toaccess two grounds side by side to quickenmatchdays for volunteers and players alike .

Here's wishing all teams all the best for thecoming season .

Preview - Round 1 (Royal Park North)

Division 1Karingal 1 play Colac in the first encounter

for the season and with the Bulls being a topside last year it is hard to see the Colac teamwinning this one .

Bendigo 1 play last year's Division 2Premiers Parkside in what will be a great spec-tacle. Both teams play a fine brand of footballand in a toss of the coin I am expecting the RedDevils to get their first points for 2000 today.

Ballarat were a fine unit last year andalthough runners-up will be highly motivatedtoday to begin 2000 off well . Broadmeadows 1showed plenty last year and with the addition ofa few key players could well take the step upthis season to challenge the big guns . Ballaratis tipped to win without any conviction .

Geelong 1 has the bye .

Division 2

South Yarra (formerly the Lions) shape upagainst Geelong 2 and although the Lions havedropped a division for 2000 I feel the Cats willget the points today .

Karingal 2 will be too strong for Keilor whohave changed a bit in terms of personnel andwill be still finding their feet.

Mambourin Tigers and Maribyrnongshould be a close hard fought game with theexpected improvement of the Tigers to get themover the line .

Ringwood and Broadmeadows 2 face off inanother battle that will go down to the wire . TheKangas have heaps of numbers and will be verycompetitive, however my tip is the Blues with alittle more experience .

In the final match Bendigo 2 and Hawthornclash with both sides under performing in1999 . The Hawks were inconsistent while theWarriors battled with numbers later in the year. All things being equal the Hawks should regis-ter their first win today .
