led O. : into nine successive A Section finals series .
! McCracken, Old Scotch's historian, informs usthat the Cardinal's hold the record of 14 successive ASection final appearances set between 1922 and 1935 .When SKOBS made it into A Section in 1998 they werefodder for Xavs until Mike The Great (Milm : c- - r
who coached Ormond to five A Section flags)arrived in 1999. Success was immediate with SKOBSbreaking through for their first win over Xavs in theAmateurs but later in 1999 OX thrashed SKOBS .Later in 1999 SKOBS fell to Melburnians by three goalsin the preliminary.Last year they split their home-and-away results againbefore the best match of the year was staged in thepreliminary when Xavs got over SKOBS by four points .This year they have split their two rounds .After these battles many hombres from both teamshave been unable to take the field the next week .Thankfully, the victor will have a week's recuperationbefore going into the preliminary against the loser ofMarcellin and St Bernards .There's a theory that you've got to do your time in footybefore you gain success so this year it should be theSKOBBERS' turn . "Each year is a separate entity,"McArthur-Allen said . "It's a matter of whether we arelearning . "No doubt they have been. "
Marcus Olive, fresh from taking out the best-and-fairest in,an amateur London rugby competition, isready to repeat his barnstorming performance from24{}0 where he played his first game of the season inthe reserves in the last round .Today, there is every chance the ruckman v ill play his

Old B' 's last game in A Section was punctua

Down beachside way, Oldeventually prevailed over a pluckyby 30pts . A 5 goal 3rd qtr by OH was -rfor the home side . Best for OH were Fletc °r,Jayasekera and Harrop, and Beaumaris' werewell served by Foley, Matulick and Fitzgerald .
At Chelsworth Park, Ol d Ivanhoe held swayover a determined Therry and won by l3pts . 7goals by 01 in the 2nd qtr set up the win . Bestfor 01 were Lillis, Tiernan and Lochran .Therry's best were Edwards (9 goals), Garoniand Carter.
Frank was given a rousing send off by the boysfrom NOBs, as they made certain ofWhitefriars' demise by posting a 29pt win .Retiree Boyle with 7 goals starred and wasassisted by Drum and Barlow . Thedisappointing Whitefriars' better players werePhan, Ramp and Bryce .
Br. Garvey bore witness to a shellacking, astl- :l - . "- lens went nuts and buried OldParat -s by a whopping 56pts . Mulligan (8goals) blitzed against his old club, and thebrothers Theodore went well too . Farrell .Jenkins and O'Loughlin battled hard for theOPs .
Finally, E . E . Gunn put on an almost classicgame of footy, when Ormond held off the fastfinishing De La Salle by a measly 3pts . Bestwishes to McConvill who entered hospital forleather poisoning, and the retiring S . Grace (6goals) was seen in casualty too, as they burnedfor the home side . The scene is now set for a marvellous final'sseries, with all the finalists showing good format the right end of the year . Congratulations toMona "a . who averted relegation in a vervimpressive an <ner. Farewell to Yarra Valleyand Old C rs y, with every best wish for a quickreturn to D1 .To all the players, officials, and supportersinvolved in the finals, "Mav the road rise to meetyour feet!" Which I think is Irish for "Don't puta foot wrong!" {It's usually said after a longsession at the local! )Monash Blues thumped St, Leos in amagnificent effort, demonstrating that theirrecent narrow losses to final four sides were farfrom flukes . Liam Holloway again starred in theAsher's victory : Sam Lloyd did well at HB, BenMerlin also in a minding role, and SammyHawkins at FF . The Animals were toodisappointed to name names, although BrendtHenricus deserves a mention for his comebackgame after a serious hand injury in Round 2 .Well done, Henry!
Banyule pulverised Old Ge elong with a returnto their early season dominance . OGS werenever really in it and had no counter for thelikes of Mick Gilbert, Simon Kaprooz, Chris &Cameron Tavlor, and Luke O'Connell . OGS hada great game from Hugh McCarthy on his wing, ably backed up by Hugh O'Brien, Jules Clark, and Jim Paul .
Ivanhoe did just enough to beatY Val: y ho were competitive all day butlacked the experience of the accomplished Hoes .The Hoes were particularly happy with the formof Chris Tucker & Matthew Maud up forward, and are approaching the 2nd Semi brim full ofconfidence . The Bushrangers had great effortsfrom Paul Cremean in the ruck, Brad Peake onthe ball, Phil Valoppi who did well against PeterFlynn, and James Keem at CHF
University Black s went down to Old.Camberwell, whose strong 2nd half won theday. Simon Hamm was brilliant round thepacks for the Wellers, James Clyne was solidFB, & Matty Whitehead also defended well .Craig Franklin was Blacks best, well supportedby Chris Schirner at CHF, and BenCunningham roving.
Old Carey was biovoz away Aquinas in the 2ndterm, but the other quarters were surprisinglycompetitive, given the ladder relativities . AlBethune gave a wonderful display of ruck wor k

REVIEW
SECTION I
Despite a period of doubt early in the season, when three games were lost, Old Xaveriansagain have proven their pre-eminence bywinning their sixth successive flag, which istheir ninth in the last ten seasons . (1995 is theseason of loss) .
In his address to the big crowd, coat D dKing paid tribute to ten players who a•fl othe "Crocodiles" this season . Obvio t yhave blended well with thos ethe last century! !
The game itself was a fairly even contest fornearly three quarters before the class of the OldXaverians finally emerged .
De La Salle to their credit proved formidableopponents, who especially during the first halfof the third quarter played like a premiershipteam. Their difficulty was converting theopportunities created by their mid field players .To the credit of Old Xaverians, their restrictionof key De La Salle forwards, Brad Robinson andKevin Mannix to one goal each proved a key totheir success .
A telling moment in the outcome came at thefifteen minute mark of the third quarter whenTim O'Sullivan, broke a tackle to kick a longgoal on the run . This goal took Old Xaveriansto a two goal lead and ended the efforts of De LaSalle, who had tried valiantly to wrest the leadduring the first fifteen minutes of the quarter .
The last quarter saw Old Xaverians virtuallydouble their score as their demanding final'scampaign took effect on the De La Salle players .In a five minute period between the ninth andfourteenth minutes Old Xaverians kicked fivegoals en route to their convincing fifty threepoint victory .
The final score while showing the class of theOld Xaverians team, does not do justice to thecompetitive efforts of De La Salle, who seemedlikely winners early in the second half . Again to

fortnight, Mona,, - : a - still take heart from Jreffort against the JOCs . At the risk of being
compared to participants at an orgy (i .e. "bonkers"), I'litip the Gryphs in a close one.
You m~_,, be r,'jit Pete, the Gryphons midfield is asgood as any and will take a power of beating . Myconcern is their for-ward line, which has been down inrecent weeks . It certainly doesn't lack class as thelikes of Kilmister, Gilchrist and Leeton have plenty ofthat but might be down on confidence . The Jocs haveslowly been rebuilding after a disastrous mid seasonslump that saw them in danger of missing finals alltogether. Koppens is as good as any ruckmean in thegrade and if lie gets on top the Joss will have adecided advantage . The Jocs also possess two 'Y
won co-ortably _rks to a couple of bur: o-brilliance . Like the first-semi final, there's ?plenty of action in the middle, with Urbaneand Adaway (Bentleigh) likely to square u
p contests and an array of on-balltJackson, Curtis, Addicott and Cahill (FBentlei i can boast the likes of Ada nMv ~ Ireson. Part of F."- success zthat 1 30 ie little things well : fat :ention to the fundamentals . Now that finals arehere i sure the Reds will be 120~`~, n otivated and Ifeel t' _ ~ll bring home the bacon come SaturdayW -11t.
We opened v-3 the round 1 time capsule : Idiscovered my two nominations for the tn iwere Fitzroy and Sentleigh. Both sides got of tothe only difference being that Fitzroy get on -)u ;whilst Bentleigh staggered a little bit throng] Lsecond half of the year. Make no mistake, the Redswere clearly the most dominant side in senior gradesof the VAFA this year, quite a turn around after a pooryear last year. I struggle to find a weakness with th°^great backline, skilful and disciplined midfield < apotent attack. Not a bad mix! pentleigh on ' erhand have two of the stand outs in D3, name 'and D .Martin. They may be inclined to mix it u pmaybe Martin to start forward and Shari . rmidflel€i? We shouldn't underestimate Penth ' .' sfinals e, i 4^nce but hard to past the Juggies . Fiiz
wick face off against South Melbourn eDist ,is the first semi final. In what might be athrilling contest (or might not be . . .), I'll go for the Redand Black Attack .
Fitzroy and St . John's C C square up in the secondsemi final . The Reds have been the benchmark allseason, and I don't expect anything different today.

This 10-minute period allo~ °d Uid Scotch toproduce a run-on with four unanswerf d goals. Thisultimately proved the difference! Old Xavs providedanother strong performance against a verydetermined Eagles team . Xad3 7g third quarter wasoutstanding and again proved to be the majordifference . St. Bernard's at home was always going tobe hard, so with Bernard's opening up with 4g to lgat quarter time, the signs were ominous . But NEVERdoubt this SKOB team! They are tough, determiand resilient . This game was I• d like a Dual tithe 'double chance' at st,_ _~, at fin ;SKOBS last quarter was m it to boot t_ rmajors to snatch the win by lpt. O .M .'s finished i^irseason off well with a strong ., wn over their Lionneighbors by 42pts . Coach Berry must have beenwondering -what the hc?i was going on after Uni Blueshad opened up well and .!ere only l4pts down at themajor break . He shori_' >t have worried because 15iast half goals a: 3 :c_ Uni goalless ensured a11lpt-winning margin and a place in the finals .
Beaumaris had another pod win over the Nodders, with Coote, Gillespie and T.SeConchie dominating .

The last round of the season proved to be a beautyand' e ; u were the big winners, the Bees defeatingOld I, ' : 26 points and in the process claimingtop spo i the ladder and earning a vital br, thisweekend . The Bees led all day, although Old N-anhoe,who had occupied top spot on the table for 7 theentire season, were always within strik- distance .Caulfield Grammarians claimed third spot and thecrucial double chance when they defeated OldEssendon by 17 points in a great game . Caulfieldtrailed by 17 points at the last chance but booted sixgoals to nil in the last term . Napier, Sinclair and Falluwere best for Caulfield, while Old Essendon, whorounded out the season in fifth spot, were well servedby Buckley, Wellington and Slater. Old Trinity

WSouth elcourne Districts face up to Old Xavs atBenilei -? Reserve, still reeling from last week's loss of26pts . Coach McKiIlop would have devised a plan inwhich to open 'die game up to release his goal kickersin Cheevers and Winters. Aquilina will need to bemore destructive around the ball. Old Xavs on theother hand must be 'clzock full' of confidence with lastweek's performance. The likes of Chamberlain, Bryce,Cato, McCall and Dillion were the players that causedthe havoc and this week will be looked at to repeat theperformance . This game should go down to the wire, but I feel that the Swans should get up be a miserly 5points .
