I Fvelcome all Amateur Football followers tothis, our one day in September - Grandfinal weekend .

fhis weekend brings down the curtain on ap;mendously successful year for ourissociation .

have seen very competitive football playedin all sections of our competition, and ofcourse have had great success in ourrepresentative games also .

lll of our clubs should be justly proud of theirear, and I say that sincerely and regardless ofchether or not they achieved on field success .

: s I have said on many occasions the VAFA is ,2001, not only about providing a well run

football competition, it is about, at club level, providing an environment where young menand women can also enjoy those intangiblehings such as mateship, dependence, trust

and support that when added together enrichyreatly our everyday lives .

We are all passionate about our great gameand our individual clubs. Often we are soengrossed in obtaining success for ourselvesthat we lose sight of what we are really about .

The tragic events that occurred in the UnitedStates last week really do put into perspectivethe place Australian Rules football has in theoverall scheme of things .

Don't ever forget it is only a game that we areplaying.

This football year would not have been thesuccess it has but for the magnificent supportof my Executive Committee and our staff .

I thank every one of you for your contributionand the passion you have for our Association .

Congratulations to those clubs who havealready won Grand Finals or who have gainedpromotion to higher sections for 2002 .

In particular I congratulate Fitzroy Reds andienton€ Amateurs on both being "Premiers

and Champions" in each of their sections ,

it is a wonderful effort to be the "premier"

club, but it is aneven greaterachievement to gothrough thes e a s o nundefeated .

To those in this week's games I wish everysuccess to the competing clubs.

This weekend is in that ;•- the A

Section Gi we h; e two

participants ?o in n in an Asection grand final - LKevins . It is a wonderful ac ' 'e: ent by bothclubs and I congratulate .iem on it .

In B section, the teams that finished first andsecond on the ladder after the first roundmatches -Old Ivanhoe and De La Salte, playoff for the pennant. Both clubs have greatrespect for each other-both on and off thefield -- and I am sure we will see a greatgame-good luck to you both .

There has been a changing of the guard in Asection with the Old Xaverians not playing inthis year's grand final after having won thelast six A section flags .

When people talk of the Old Xaverians'achievement, they tend to focus only on theirfirst XVIII . Consider also the fact their secondXV11I have won four of the last six reservessection premierships, their UI19's five out ofthe last nine and their Club XVIII team nine ofthe last ten! .

This is a remarkable record and shows thestrength of the Old Xaverians' club and thereason they have been so successful ,

Something for all clubs to aspire to! !

No doubt they will bounce back in 2002 .

Good luck to every one this weekend. Thankyou for your support this football year . Enjoythe break and I look forward to seeing you in2002 .

intless other things that make a football seasonfind ourselves at G tal weekend .

The very sound of it - Gr. usi <'inai! - conjures upgreat memories of fantastic football occasions and1 ,hope this weekend provides similar experiencesfor many of the readers . Not everyone can be oneof the winners, but you can win in the eves of

_racc and spirit .

Gcod luck to all finalists over the weekend .To those who played their final matches lastvxekend - congratulations to Hampton Rovers (C

°etion premiers) ; Old Camberwell (D1 premiers) ;.::i ~-'one Amateurs (D2 premiers) ; 'Fit, roy 1.(D3 premiers) and Ajax and OR 0 1(under 19 blue and red premiers respectively) andto the runners up who gave their all - Old17ssendon (C), Banyule (D1) ; Williamstown CYMS(D2), Bentleigh (D3) and Mentone Amateurs andTherry Penola (U/ 19) .

I t<<?,e this opportunity of thanking everyone whohas contributed to this highly successful season .To individualise is always dangerous becausewhen you have gone to print it always dawns onyou that you have forgotten someone that hasbeen a huge contributor . Having said that I need tothan', each member of the Administration forgiving so much of their energy to make sureeverything is always in place as well as possible forall our programmed events and also to RichardEvans, Bruce McTaggart and the Executiv eCommittee for their constant support of th eAdministration .

Wasn't it lovely to ingratiate ourselves in watchingfootball last weekend after the terrible and tragicevents in the United States of the week before ?Sport has the beautiful ability to do that in timesof world, national or personal crisis and I am surethat Amateur football provided that tonic for us allast weekend . Let's all make sure that "your" VAFAcontinues to play an important part in all of ourves .

U finally . . . .

Thumbs Up (1):After a tight game (U19Werribee v. Old Ivanhoe), where Werribee

,.,,ere the winners and before Werribee sang theirong they gave three cheers for Old Ivanhoe .

Thumbs Up (2) :To all clubs

who co-operate dwith our request `--"~°-=--- ~-- -~(web page), in light of the US tragedy, of wherepossible wearing black armbands, observing aminute's silence and flying flags at half mast . I wasproud to feel the deep level of respect shown .Thank you .

r- Thuanbs Do : To the supporters who jumpthe fences refusing to pay admittance prices

at finals matches . It costs big money to secure firstclass venues for our finals and this money canonly be raised by charging at the gates . OneCollegians' fan "coughed up" and apologised . It ishoped that the Old Ivanhoe supporters will feelguilty and will agree to pay double at thisSaturday's final . Their photographs have beentaken whilst at Sandringham last week and gatestaff will report back if these lads have "settled" .And in signing off for the year , . . . .Firstly I would like to bid farewell and a hugethanks for jobs well done to Michael Sneddon(Umpires Advisor) and his key assistant GeoffRidd. We will miss you both - your efforts havebeen greatly appreciated.N ext a huge thank you to the members of theExecutive and club volunteers who have given somuch of their time to assist as duty officers atVAFA finals over the past few weeks - often athankless task, but one that is appreciated byAdministration .

Best of luck to all readers and followers of ourgreat game . I wish you an enjoyable weekend andlook forward to doing it all again in the year 2002 .

"I HOPE Marcellin hears this : 'Tell them werecoming'!" were the words usedto start St. I£ '' first ever VAFA A Section GrandFinal week ."That's terrific," replied Marcellin coach SimonDalrymple, "we're prepared". Like SKOBS, the Eaglesare into unchartered territory . The best both clubs hadachieved in A Section is third, St . Kevins in the pasttwo years under MMA, and Marcellin three times from1983-1990 .This time last year MMA was using his psychologytraining to see how he could get the club to takeanother step while Dalrymple, 36, was at the Olympicspondering whether his first year with the Eagles wouldbe in A or B section depending on the Old Melburniansappeal to stay in A.There have been no recruits at MarceIlin just Jamesrbrahim. and Oh `9 ' coming back from 1999,and Woodrow Medallist Dinneen enjoying goodhealth this year.St. Kevins have also developed their existing talentwith the standouts the Giansiracusa twins, Mick andJosh .The Boys from Bulleen are two-nil head-to-head thisyear, having thrashed SKOBS in seven of the eightquarters. It's that eighth quarter at Trevor Barker Oval that givestoday's game a twist . SKOBS kicked i l goals to two tofall short by a goal .This along with SKOBS' come-from-behind wins inthis finals series against Xaverians and St . Bernardshas given the Toorak-based club an edge .In last Sundays seven-point preliminary final victoryover the Bernies, St. Kevins' average age was 23 .6years .Marcellin's average age in the second-semi win overthe Bernies by 38 points was 26 .09 years .St. Kevins had one player 30 years old, MikeKavanagh, whereas Marcellin had, Tony Caffry andChris Slattery both 35, Steve O'Flynn 32, AndrewDuncan 31 and Justin Seabury and Andrew

owan both 30."If it's a hot day a couple of those players who arecoming to the end of their careers might find it hardagainst the young kids who can run all day," MMAsaid ."Our fitness is the best in the comp and we've comefrom behind to kick nine goals to one against Xavs atToorak Park and we go hard all day," Dalrymplecountered .

MMA is the VAFA'smost successful coachwith five A Section - -

- flags, two more than a ~- -:group with three, and Dalrymple seems ready for thmental battle after having an insight into M :,; atyoung age. When Dalrymple won the under-13s best-and-faire ;with Canterbury-North Balwyn, MMA was the clubsenior coach ."Mike took some interest in me," Dalrymple said .The respect has continued ."When Simon got the sack from Old Trinity in 1996supported him," MMA said .

Asked if the connection would affect his coachin,Dalrymple said : "It's just a coincidence" .-TODAY'S key match-ups should be Eagle full-forwarTreganowan, in career-best form, against PatO'K e who has become a team leader ; StevO'Connor in the mid-field against Dinneen and MarBrowne, who rucks to the best mid-field in the VAF1against Garth Pickford . Not sure if the age is a bifactor at this level because Dalryrnple will use hveterans off the bench . The best parts will be tib, centre breaks and Marcellin's height versus SKOAshorts . Maybe St. Kevins' experience at ElsternwicPark could be a factor.

-ST.KEVINS' effort into making the Grand Fin ;culminates 10-year and five-year plans . In 1991 wheSKOBS were in D Grade, the committee decided Ichange the culture with the appointment ofPetrie who is still a supporter. Mike, a former VFumpire, said: "We got rid of the boozers and the losers

In 1994, Tim Hart was into his first year of coachin~

when the club was runners-up in D Section and d.committee again sat to re-assess its goals .

President during the period Steve Browne said it.emphasis was put onto recruiting, makin

g administration stronger, club discipline and playin gteam game.-ST. KEVIIVS's last premiership was in 1996 inSection, Marcellin's last flag was in 1998 in B Sectior

-GARRY Foulds, coach of St Bernards . believes thMcIntyre Final Four System needs to change to tharrangement used in last year's Olympic year. Thfinal four matches stayed the same but the first ansecond-semi finals were played on the openinweekend. "It is too much of an advantage for the tearcoming out of the first-semi, which has a week's resmeeting the team coming out of the second-semi th-,has to play in successive weeks . "Also the team goin

It was at the Glenhuntly Rd end from a similar<pot to where he missed a set-shot in last veal's grandtinai loss to Xavs but then it was in the last quarter .1~ain it would have given momentum to the Bernies .une kick doesn't make a match," Mitchell said .Tiie preliminary final was highlighted by Mitchell's

im-mate Tait Wilkinson, who was dominant in therst half at half-back, being benched in the third term .

My3clection was based on the home-and-away .<'Iayer of the Year: Old Scotch's Luke Hawkins. OK,,uke only played nine games because of hisramitments with Essendon in the VFL . The slightly

,uilt red-head averaged six goals a match which wouldave put him on course for the ton . The best standardatch I saw this year was at Camberwell when th e

The Holy Grail is up for grabs, and its downto just two : Old 1vanhoe and De La Salle .Good luck to all clubs in grades playingtoday .

Review

That same wind that lives at Elsternwick wasalive and well down the road at Sandringham,as Old Ivanhoe proved too good for aseemingly lethargic Old Melburnians by 21pts .

Mrs Weddle's boy keeps -winning the two up,as OI kicked with what appeared to be a 5-6goal breeze . It was a quarter of contrasts .OMs did particularly well for the first 20 or sominutes, as Treloar was running hard andBerry was finding space, but they couldn'tquite find the goalposts . Hope was gettingplenty of the ball and J . Weddle was runningaround like a rover, booting 4 goals for thequarter . 01 held a 15pt lead, but one felt itwasn't enough .

We were all expecting OMs to pile on the goals

in the 2nd qtr, but all we saw was anavalanche from 01, and a killing of thecontest . The league leaders controlled thepacks and found themselves in plenty ofspace, as OMs had dropped off their intensityfrom the first qtr. Crowley was wearingMulligan like a second skin, choking all lifefrom the big man . 01 slammed on 4 goalsagainst the tide, before Berry (OMs) broke thedrought at the 24 min mark, but the damagewas done . A Toovey goal on the siren was thatstraw that saw the camel scream as his backsnapped in half!! The main break saw 01 leadby an almost unbeatable 47pts .

The third quarter wasn't the greatest ofspectacles, as both sides battled the difficultbreeze . Treloar for OMs was playing wellagainst the tide, and Lochran and 150 gamerHaros (01) were also showing plenty of zip . 01had plenty of the ball but could only scorepoints, whereas Treloar capped off a good qtrwith the first goal at the 28 min mark, andthen Berry followed quickly with another toput a smidgin of hope in the Redlegs' camp .They were facing a 41pt deficit, but had thewind at their backs in the final term .

Again, the wind had an effect on the quality .Two goals by Hecker and Mulligan of OMswithin the first 10 mins reduced the margin

to 29pts, andthere was a minorchance of anupset . However, the 01 defence, ledby the miser Crowley and Mrs . Weddle's otheboy, stood firm against a mini barrage to wizcomfortably in the end .

For the victors, Crowley absolutely strangle(his opponent, and Hope and Haros wer, strong in the midfield, which gave 01 plenty odrive around the packs . OMs had greacontributions given by the youngster Treloarand the experienced pair of Berry (4 goalsand Lovett, but did not have enougiteammates who matched their efforts .

I suppose I could be forgiven for writing thfsame stuff I wrote 2 weeks ago, as it's <replay of the 2nd semi final between OlcIvanhoe (1/3) and De La Salle (9/4) .

The scoreline we all now know stands at 2-1in favour of the flag favourites, but the winweeks ago by DLS was a good one . It wascomplete contrast to the 2 meetings in thehome and away season, as 01 gave their moreinexperienced opponents 2 reasonablebeatings .

The chiefs from Pine Lodge are relaxed foi now, as they have won their way into?

Section in 2002 and the 2001 OF.Considering the year that they have had (15 .3), no-one in amateur football wouldbegrudge the residents of Chelsworth Parlsthe spoils that have befallen them .

Hope found some touch last week, and so didthe nimble footed 'rover' (read beanpole) in J .Weddle . OI's equivalent of the human glove inCrowley played a belter last week, and willmake life difficult for his opponent today . Andmake no mistake, that man Branigan is dueto fire .

Paul Cooper has had a relaxing 2 weeks, asthe great win the in the 2nd semi turnedaround the indifferent form shown by hischarges over the last 6 weeks of the home andaway. Before that mini slump, it would bereasonable to suggest that DLS, along withtoday's opponent, were the stand-outs in2001 .

~ ct again, in their last game, it was the oldrcliables of the 'Dad's Army' of Mackintosh,

Toohey and Swift that held sway, and ledtheir younger teammates along for the ride .~[ackintosh is in such rare form, he has won~ 3rd B&F for the club (well done, Macka!!),.Iid encourages all and sundry. I'm evenconsidering a comeback it's that inspiring!!,

V,'ell, it's down to this . The finale of theipping stakes . The flag favourites and league

leaders from day 1, showed a return to forml :,st week, and this does not auger well for the1),)-,-s from Malvern . They'll have their workcut out to win today, as I'm of the belief thatthe 2nd semi was an abberation for 01, asthey've been the stand-outs all year.

The only hope DLS have got this week is ifChef Carroll found some more of that magicpotion for last week's breakfast, and if theywin, I'll be and opening a chain ofrestaurants!! My tipping has been absolutelyschizenhausen, but I'll be the happiest manon Earth if I am proven an idiot with myselection . 01 by 26 pts .

I've maintained all along that OH are the bestteam in the Magoos this year, and I'm notgoing to get off the wagon . Even thoughOrmond are tough and experienced in finals,I think that OH will pack too many guns andwin by l9pts .

they convincingly rolled OR in theGrand Final on Saturday . To _ill Jewett,Norm Goss and his coaching panel, to SteveAnderson and his players, and all associatedwith the club, congratulations on yourseason it was a premiership richly deservedand may you continue to enjoy thecelebrations . It is the club's third premiershipin 6 seasons a magnificent achievement inanyone's language . To John Newbold, ChrisBye, Sam Fleming and all at Bomberland donot des~^ir too much, I know it isdisappo i Ii 1,5 to stumble at the final hurdle, you hav had a great season and the trip toB-Grade ~ :- some small consolation .

Ando won the toss and decided to takeadvantage of a< - to as the game openedat a furious pace . _ o rs kicked a couple ofpoints but then Old _ssendon into the windkicked the first goat and were looking quitegood . Dean Busby up forward for the Roverswas having a big influence on the game andkicked one himself and had a hand inanother . Half -,vay through the term scoreswere level and one felt the guys in the goldand green were wasting their opportunities, but persistence paid off and a few late goalssaw the Rovers with a handy 18 point bufferat the first change .

Hampton during the year had certainly earnta reputation for their tackling and this wasmaking it difficult for the Bombers to breakeiear and get their running game going . BigPort Power kicked an early goal to increasethe lead, and then for the next 10 minutes orso the ball rebounded between the backlinesas both sides tried to gain true ascendancy .Denver Artz as usual was evervwhere and hisone percenters and second efforts inspiredhis younger team mates, both sides kicked acouple of points before a precision pass fromLuke Holt found Buckets who duly produceda major. The big Chief along with Gino andTimmy Wilmott and Woods had the Bombersforivards under control and they could onlymanage 1 goal with the wind giving theRovers a 23 point lead at the main break .

One felt the flag was almost at David Street as

the Rovers wereplaying prettyconfidently an

d Old Essendonwere strugglin geverywhere and appeared to be fir . .kicked the first one of the third st< :athe Doc and young Carr got the be iPo wer . This just gave them more co . icand allowed them to break free fro ,opponents who were now really fee' ;-pressure . Tim Wilmott my Hampton pl ofthe final series drifted down to kicl egoal and if the game wasn't over then ; acouple of minutes later when rdelivered a totally fair bone jarrin_ cnHakim which stopped the gam . idnot stop the Rovers momentum - ~ r :totally knocked the stuffing out eBombers . By now everything was fa; ] r. _ , oplace for the bayside brigade their passeswere crisp and were delivered with precision,a goal to Lutterschmidt was against the flowbut then a couple more to Luke Holt andPower saw 51 points the difference aseveryone headed for an orange .

The final quarter of the season with the windadvantage was a chance for the Bombers tosalvage some pride . They got their hands onthe ball often enough but were prettyineffective due to the continued pressureapplied by the Rovers who although havingthe game totally won were not relaxing at all .The Bombers managed to kick a couple butwere then totally overwhelmed as the Roversthrough Luke Holt and Denver followed by agreat roving goal by Matt the kid McKellarand Sugar Healy sealed their fate and as thesiren sounded for the last time in 2001 theRovers were jubilant and rightful victors .

In a great game Michael Fletcher wasawarded the Michael Ritterman Medal forBOG, Anthony Browne in the ruck took thehonors over Scott McPherson, Denver wasjust Denver, Timmy Wilmott played very wellas did Woods, Martin and Zampaglione . Forthe Bombers Panagiotopoulos was their mostconsistent 4 quarter player receiving si.,nn,,tfrom Evans, Flaherty and Fleming.

B1 SECTION GRAND FINALS SUMMARY

Tremaa.lae slnnta ge€ fl amine vestes .

(Her fluttering tunic floated in the breeze .)

The above is the beautiful final line of theRoman poet Ovid's version of the myth of'Europa and the Bull', describing the lastsighting that on-shore onlookers have of thelovely Grecian maid Europa as she is carriedout to sea on the back of her pet bull .

It came to mind as we stood in the in themiddle of Box Hill City Reserve, coats flappingin the wind, doing all the final things beforeseason 2001 slowly floated out of view on thesea of time. It was a sensational day'sfootball . The players struggled with a quirky,wind-bonked ball, yet skills and courage therewere aplenty, and both matches could havegone either way in dramatic last quarters .

For Alan Mitchell, and all at Old Camberwell, the day turned out a triumph, augmented bythe news that the Weller's U19's had alsotriumphed, to make it three flags for theirday's activity. For Banyule and UniversityBlacks, disappointment for sure, but pridealso, in that their players were still going hardat the ball as the siren ended their contests .

John Manton, and family, were there topresent the John Manton Medal to a veryworthy winner in Travis Hardman of OldCamberwell, who capped off his great playround the packs by kicking the goal thatsealed the result for his team .

Many thanks to Brain McMahon, Secretary ofthe Box Hill Hawks, for his terrific helpthroughout the Finals, and to BrendanTurville and his crew for their cateringextravaganza !

And to close off the opening metaphor, it was

great to hear at the after match, that themassive, bull-like (bulls being bigger thanbears!) frame of BIG Dave Williams (the D12001 B&F winner!) will be once more wearing

the Banyule jumper in 2002, and not retiringas previously intended !

SENIORS

All present observed a minute's silence inrecognition of the tragic events in the UnitedStates during the week, and the game started

with the 1 ;3e , _ :,skicking to theScoreboard end, having the dubiousaid of a swirlingnorth westerly which rendered the flight -1thof the ball a dodgy parabola complete withcomplex harmonics! The tackling of both

sides was relentless and Anthony Damen andRobert Sneddon gave the players every chance

to clear the ball from congested areas all day,Greg Whitcroft would not have been happ~

with the 15 points lead the Bears had at thefirst change, and less so with the conversior.rate . In the end, the latter turned out to be <key factor in the Wel3er's win, they kickec

8.11 with the wind, while the Bears secret

3 .14! But I would have to say in the forwardsdefence, that the wind made getting the bal .aligned properly on to your foot hard enoughand what happened after that was anybody' ;

guess . So Shane Properjohn kicking 4 for thfWellers, and Dave Witchell 3 for the Bearswere damned fine efforts . The Bears came tcwithin 3 points of the Wellers at about the 2(minute mark of the last term, with the mateiwide open, and the intensity of the play jusextraordinary, but the Wellers' slight paciadvantage gave them more first uses of thball in the dying stages, culminating in Travi :Hardman's sealer just before the siren to en(a memorable match . In addition to TravisOld Camberwell had stand out efforts fronNathan Lippiatt in the ruck and general fiel

play; Rohan Kapoor was brilliant on his wingShane Properjohn did the job around th

goals ; and Matt Hanson was steady acres

half back all day . For the Bears, Jason Planstarted slower than usual, but he just gcbetter and better as the day wore on, and wainstrumental in the Bears major challenge i .

the last term; Dave William's virtuosperformance on the ball and his ground skillwere amazing for his size ; Brad Willmore'work rate on the ball was in overdrive all da)and Clinton Burke capped off a good day o .his flank with a goal when it was needed . Thumpires handled the tension of the conte:

and the difficult conditions with eonsiderablaplomb, and when I responded to Anthony'

customary enquiry back in the dressing roonas to how I thought they went, b

commenting, "I found myself for the most pa

in, strong disagreement with those spectators\%. i o were shouting disapproval at you!' . Inleant it !

1'1P_s match was a mud-less version of thei~.ton Wall game, the wind made open play ai- :1rity, and whither the ball went, there was- a:,eething mass of players wrapped around it![ he only difference in the end was that John1?<uvey's unit made marginally more use of,'neir opportunities than James Trevaskis' .This was one of those games where the effortt f both sides was such, that you wished theycould both have won, but unfortunately ourrules don't cater for that outcome . Thedefining moment came in the dying seconds%vith Blacks only three points down, when aL'3ac?_s forward, half a meter from the goal-line, attempted to mark an arrow straight 50metre kick from near the boundary, droppedit, and the ball was rushed through for apoint! That bundle of milliseconds will bei, played in the participants' minds, possiblyfor years, but the eventual result will alwaysbe as recorded on the Goal Umpires'scorecards . Stephen Derry, James McKenzie,.nd Dion Brauer were somehow singled out

'.'or special mention by the Wellers mentionfrom one of the most even sides I've ever seen .Which was equally true of the Blacks, Smith,Schilling and Ralph were outstanding playerson a day when you could have named theentire 22!

5 YEARS AGO - 1S c 6Old Xaverians, 1995W premiers, had wun only two out of the firstnine games, when they sacked coach Simon Meehan, andreplaced him with 1995 reserves premiership coach, Nick Bourke .And in a tight A" section grand final, the Xavs held out thedesperate fight - back by Collegians to win by 5 points . The gamewas played in a strong swirling wind .Michael Holmes at C.H.B . for Xacs won the Jock Nelson Medal forbest on ground. Q by Q scores were :O .X. 3.4 3.5 7.10 8 .10(58)/Coll. 1.0 4.3 4.3 8 .5(53)Daniel Bonati followed his five goals in the preliminary final withfour goaLs .

Good players were John Bowen, e Bn.tshfield, James Hawkins,Matt McClelland (OX) and Matt Galbraith, Jim Bennett, BrettJefferson, Andrew KenneaAy, Tony Parkin (Coll .).The premiership team was :Bks: Brennan Brushfield HawkinsH. Umpires were Peter Gersch and Martin Jackson.Old Trinity went right away in the second half to defeat OldParadians 14 .13 to 9 .9 to win the 'B' section flag.Best were Vanderhoek, Board, Seuling, Cummings, Sealy,Dalrymple (O.T.) and Canavan, Dallas Mulligan, Boyd, S .Swindon, Hartford (O .P. )Umpires were Mark Gibson and Justin Toohey.

10 YEARS AGO- 1991

A dreadful week of weather preceded the Grand Final weekend .Some relief on Thursday then "monsoon" rain about noon onFriday left EP on the grandstand side looking like a lake. Hisexpertise and 40 years experience as a plumber soon becameevident when Executive member, John Miles, assisted by PhilStevens, got the pumps working to leave the oval in reasonableshape .

Well Saturday, was described as an appalling day - the groundbecame a bog and there was a blustery wind .Be La's hopes of three flags in a weekend rose when they won theUnder 19 flag defeating a confident Old Xaverians 13.17 to 9.5.Best were McCarthy, Crowe (4gls), Dean (De La) and Purcell,Collins, Hansen (OX) . Umpires were Bell and Clinch .It turned out a black day for Old Xaverians. As the rain keptcoming. OX. and St Bernard's slogged it out in the B' SectionGrand Final. Q by Q scores were -St. B. 2.4 5.4 5.5 5.5 (35) /Old X. 1.1 2.1 3.3 4.3(27)

It probably created two records at least, the lowest ever total scorescored in an Amateur senior grand final, and the lowest scoringsecond half. Of the nine goals scored, five were kicked off the

ground. The only scoring I 1shot in the last quarter wasat the 5 minute mark whenDave Taylor (Old X) kickedat the ball in mid-air,connected and it went through for a goal . Umpires were Dalgc :;hand Bushfield. Best were V. Comito, Carey, L. Purcell, MaIlia, S.Walsh, G. Wood (3 gLs) (St Bern) and J . McKay, M . Hannelery,Holmes, Petroff, Boolan, McCorkell (Old X .) .Sunday was reasonable. The ground was heavy but drying out.De La made it two flags when in A' Reserves they produced awithering last quarter. Trailing Old Scotch 5 .5 (35) to 9.9 (63), theykicked 6 .2 (38) to 0.1 to win . Then De La devastated North OldBoys as they went on to kick 10.8 (68) in the first half to NOB's 1 .5(11). It was a happy afternoon tea for De La, miserable for NOB,and a dull prospect for the second half. Well, it was a sensationalsecond half. North Old Boys players lifted and at the last changeit was 11 .10 to 9.8. De La were staunch in the final term and whileNorth Old Boys had the better of the quarter, the siren found DeLa in front by 5 points, 12 .10 (92) to 11 .11(83). A truly magnificentgame - De La superb in the first half and NOB courageous in thesecond half :

Rumour has it that the O'Callaghan clan (2 sons in senior, theother in reserves), their father, a President, player and invaluablegoal umpire for the Reserves, led De La celebrations which werelong and wearing. And to be politically correct, I should mentionthat Mary, mother and wife and also ex committee member, helped

20 YEARS AGO -198 1In an unequalled form reversal, Old Xaverians avenged their

_ cond semi 96 point defeat by North Old Bo,-s when they= controlled the 'A' section grand final throughout to win by 1 8

points, 15.21 to 13 .15 . Nick Burne continued his great form at fullforward with 5 goals while Stephen Curtain also contributed 3 andwas a great performer around the ground. The best player onground was Old Xaverians captain John Noonan, who ruckedstrongly all day. A tight knit Old Xaverians defence shut outNorth's semi final star Shane Maguire . Others to play well for Old:~averians were Vale, Atkinson and Carmody. Old Xaveriansjoined the select band of clubs which had won'B'andA: Sectionpremiership in successive years . Old Xaverians only otherappearance in an 'A' Section grand final was in 1964 when it wasbeaten by Old Paradians.

Best players for North Old Boys were Burgin, Considine, S. Weir,ORourke, Borcich and S . At the finalsiren, Ivanhoe was 2 points in front with John Manuell of Ivanhoemarking before the siren and kicking truly to give 'Hoes victory by8 points. (Long time executive member John Miles, was a memberof the team - NR). It was Ivanhoe's first 'A' section premiership .

Collegians won "B" section, South Melbourne City "C" and OldGeelong Grammarians defeated FTSOB, De LaSalle OC andUHSOB quite comfortably to take out the 'D' section premiership.(Modesty forbids the author from describing the game other thanto state that he played in centre for 0GG - NR). Ormond easily wonJunior premiership, defeating Old Scotch .

50 YEARS AGO - 195 1Old Melburnians welcomed new coach, John Mitchell, and amongthe recruits, Ian Rutherford and John Davis, who went on to begreat players in the club's 3 premierships, 1953-54-55 .

Amateur football was saddened by the death of University Blacks'centre half back, Brian Manual - the Ormond scribe Dr J .R Porterwrote, "deepest sympathy to Mr and Mrs Manuel on the loss oftheir son, Brian, who we had come to know as a sportsman - in itshighest meaning. Today we meet the Blacks in whose ranks he

was an ornament. The game and life go on. Vale, Brian" .

Old Paradians as always enjoyed their trip to Geelong -weather, good company, and a last minute victory. MaurieConsidine played an outstanding game at fu ll back . Department. Western Australia included B. Sneddon, 24, 60",13 .10, later to be Leader of the Opposition and Speaker in theHouse of Representatnes . The 5 team Carnival was thrown intoconfusion when in the first match diCA . (11 .14) drew withTasmania (12.8) . Canberra fielded a strong team beating S.A.11 .11 to 9.12, and WA, 19 .12 to 12 .10. This put them into thefinal against Victoria whose only previous match in the carnivalwas a 39 .18 to 4 .4 viii over Tasmania Victoria defeated Canberrato win 18.20 to 2.5.Jack waLsh retired after umpiring VAFA matches for 21 years. Coach was Clan icVontcm, former Collegbns, VAFA interstate player of 1936, and StIiilda (WI.) rover.65 . o - 2935Finals time and controversy was there even in those years longago . At the delegates meeting the Parkdale delegate alleged that%a-em, the side that finished on top in'C' Section after home andhome games had "rung in° a disqualified junior league player . Ifthe allegation turned out to be true, Parkdale would go to the'top'of the ladder, Old X"awrians into the four and Pvtal4rern out of thefour.

Parkdale s allegation was that one of its players recognised a manplaying for PvSahern as a member of the i,t'est Park side in theJuntor League who had been disqualified by the tribunal of Ubah, when he did not appear to answer a charge of itconduct. The complaint was referred to the executive co irnwith power to act after the deciding matter.

The finding was that 'Virile the player would not have been ent3ledto play with the club if he had disclosed all facts, lie had not doneso. Accordingly the club was exonerated from all blame but theplayer had his permit withdrawn" .In "'A" section Collegians after a magnificent season met StateSavings bank, the last team to beat them, 141A1' BACK on May 3p .The game played at Oakleigh, was won easily by Collegians, 1 t.18to 6.11, their first premiership since 1904 and sixth since VA'Awas founded in 1892 .

_. . . . . ~ al ReviewThere was no fairytale to be seen in the D3 decider, asthe best side throughout the year, Fitzroy, continuedthe trend as they recorded a resounding win over thegallant Bentleigh.

The Reds kicked with the aid of a solid wind the firstquarter. Onballer Addicott was everywhere early forthe Reds and with the dangerous Ronchi 'on song, the signs were ominous for the underdogs . Quartertime saw the Reds holding a solid lead but certainlynot a matching winning one .

Bentleigh started to get the machine into actionduring the second stanza. With league Best andFairest Dave Martin living up to his nickname of "1`heFreak", Bentleigh were getting plenty of the ball butstruggling to convert . This was partly influenced bythe "Human Blanket" Todd Clake containing thedangerous Sharp. Just as it looked as if the Bentleighboys were going to challenge, the Reds stepped up agear. The midfield gained control, with Jackson, whilst only playing a cameo, extremely influential withhis possessions . Rawlins and Mitchell were alsoexerting influence as their mixture of pace and height

ere proving to be telling. A couple of late goalsultimately proved to shut the gate as Fitzroy went inwith a big break at the main change.

Once again Bentleigh started brightly with the likes ofHenry and Sice working their way into the game . Thisis where the Reds cornerstone all year came into theirown, namely the defence . Skipper Drury led the way,not only via his great acts of courage but also hiswonderful poise Whilst the likes of Wharfe and Clarke

added i. .leir skilland experienceto the battle .ttritIt out

wanting to sound like a broken record, 4r'' tcontinued to star, playing what many ke :n jthought was one of best individual finals perform, seen in the VAFA for many a year. Despite the fa tthe game was basically over. The Reds led b, is ;as 10 goals towards the end of quarter and givez atthe Reds backline had only conceded an aver<five goals per game for the season, the result lookeforegone conclusion .

Unfortunately for the large crowd in attendance,

a

final quarter didn't bring much excitement, The Iscontinued to play in their typical professional n : : r,running hard to make position, supporting t o imates, executing with great skill etc . A ll in all, athoroughly well deserved victory for Graeme Burgenand his men . Bentieigh, whilst honest and gallant indefeat, were not up to the task but will no doubt takesome solace in the second success-sive promotion sincejoining the VAFA .

Well done to both sides and here's hoping MadMonday was incident f reel.

In what was something of a fairytale ,,-as able to draw a way from the h 1v

fancied reserves and record a memorable w' : . ~tw,, win number 12 in a row for the Districts and nodoubt the celebrations went long into the night!

Congratulations to Swinburne University onbecoming the second team to gain promotionin D4 this season and join Syndal Tally Ho inwhat promises to be a fitting finale to the 2001season .

Swinburne, like they have for the entire finalscampaign, was able to fight against the oddsand call on the great spirit around the club todefeat the favourites Rupertswood lastSaturday .

Review - Preliminary Final

With a howling five-goal breeze favouring oneend of the ground, it appeared as though theteam that utilised it to the best advantagewould be the most likely victor on the day .

-ne was lucky enough to start withthe breeze and came out with all guns blazing, kicking the first goal of the match within thefirst 30 seconds .

Rupertstvood's Whitehead, a dominant forceup forward this season destroyed theRazorbacks last time the two teams met, andRazorback coach, Adrian Fidler was wellaware of his dangerous presence . Therefore,he took it on himself to play on the Rupo goalkicker and did so effectively keeping him wellout of the play.

Razorback "gun" forward, Murchie up theother end was also finding the going tough, being well covered by the Rupertswooddefence . However, Swinburne's Morrison wasable to play a good roving game to Murchieand contributed well as his side led by fourgoals at quarter time .

The second quarter started slowly withSwinburne holding Rupertswood well to addto their lead to be up by 31 points 10 minutesinto the quarter. However, Rupertswood thenhit back hard . Rupo's Jordon was providing ahandful for the Razorback defenders . After thebarrage, the half time siren came as welcomerelief as Rupertswood hit the front to go intothe major break one point in front .

The Rupo supporters who had made the trekfrom Sunbury had come to life and wereproviding plenty of inspiration going into thethird quarter for Rupertswood . Rupo thencontinued on their good play and kicked acouple into the breeze while holding

Swinburne to fourand were trailingby only 16 point sand appeared the LL~_most likelv of the two sides .

However, as had been the trap for many teanbefore them, coming home with the hurricaiwas not going to be enough to get Rupo aero :the line . The dominance of Prior in the centand some inspirational work by Luck(around the ground was proving difficult fiRupertswood to counter, and with suprenpressure in defence, Rupertswood, as th€have done previously this year, kickcthemselves out of the match with sevebehinds in the final quarter .

At the other end of the ground, Swinburrwere ensuring their ticket into D3 witMorrison, Liston, Higgins and Hamiltcproviding plenty of opportunities, and wheJones and Luckey kicked truly at the 2minute mark the match was effectively over.

In the reserves Preliminary Final, NortBrunswick, as expected proved itexperienced for a determined Bulleen Cobtside as they ran out 23-point winners to sup a showdown with Syndal in the DReserves Grand Final .

GRANI) i

It is now down to two teams, the favouriteSyndal Tally Ho, a team that lost only ormatch for the entire season, and the darhorses, S"nbaa €;, who snuck into fifth spcwith a win in the last game of the seasoiBoth teams are in great form and it thereforpromises to be an epic battle for the 200premiership .

The Syndal tall brigade have been aawesome combination this season and thRazorbacks will be hard pressed to have tliplayers to counter them . Therefore, it woulappear likely Swinny will have to take thmatch up to Syndal and attempt to use the'running game to counter the Synd~dominance .

It will be a battle of the forwards with Syndal'vast array of goal kickers in Thompson, Rutteand Hannemann while Swinburne howevehave a few aces up their sleeves themselve

;,ith Murchie, who has kicked 63 goals in 10arnes, Morrison and Liston .

Ia, the previous two encounters between theLtvo teams Syndal has handed out twobeltings to the Razorbacks . However, if youdelve further into the results, in one match,5winburne were up at three quarter time butfell away in the last to allow Syndal a ten goalfinal quarter, so there is little doubtSwinburne can match it with them, and giventheir the teams rampant form, and that ofgoal kicking sensation Murchie, theunderdogs could have their day out .

My tipping in the seniors for the finals hasbeen atrocious to say the least and I have toapologize to Syndal for giving them my "kiss of

death" . The most impressive side of theseason for their consistency and sheer classthey will be very difficult to beat and shouldhave the personnel to counter the Swinburnerunners and to cut off supply to their in form

for .rards . Therefore, I predict Syndal Tally HoLo take out the 2001 D4 premiership in acanter as they run out 32-point winners .

In the reserves I believe that while North_;_-uraswiok are without doubt the mostequipped team to take on :

-however, it

would be a very brave man to tip against thisclass outfit . I think the boys from Syndal willbe primed to be part of the celebrations withtheir senior counterparts and will bring homethe double with a 14-point victory .

Let me conclude by saying it has been a greatpleasure writing for the D4 section this seasonand I have thoroughly enjoyed chatting withyou all on game days and at other timesthroughout the season . Good luck to theSyndal and Swinburne with their promotion

into D3, and I look forward to our newentrants next year in UHSOB and Albert Park .

Finally, just a quick note in regard to all thathas happened in the USA over the past two

weeks. It has really put football intoperspective and has made me realise that weshould be very thankful for this grcatcompetition and country that we are all a partof, so until next season, keep safe and see youin 2002 .

ndcl 'l:<^_'1.,- - : 3 - congratulate srnneuaann on playing his 5v": game thi s

week. A regular member of the senior teamthis year, Luke is a determined backman whoenjoys going forward. A young man who is agreat contributor on and off the field .

SECTI ON i - Preliminary Fina l

The sun was out and the wind was up onPreliminary Final day . St . Bernard's won thetoss and Captain Courageous had nohesitation in kicking with it . The wind-goalratio was approximately 4 and after fiveminutes I was wondering whether this wascorrect . St . Bernard's opening goal resultedfrom a fantastic Legudi tackle . All of a suddengoals became aplenty with St . Bernard'sleading Old Scotch by l4pts at quarter time .Second quarter was a torrid affair with bothteams being very aggressive at the ball and athalftime, St . Bernard's still led by 4pts . Afterthe main break, Hosking was the loose manacross the half back line . St . Bernard's beganwell and by the 20-minute mark, led by27pts . Bouzikas, Burns and Elliott wereproviding plenty of ball for the dangerousNeeson and Legudi to goal . Old Scotchneeded'an avenue and it was the Captain whostood tall to kick three late goals from marksthat brought the deficit back to only 9pts . Thelast quarter saw Whispers move Quail to theforward line, which resulted in two terrificgoals . Barnett continued getting his hand onthe ball first, which in turn allowed Josephs,Lewis and Colman first use of the ball also . Inthe end, it was a fantastic pressure matchwith the Cardinals just by 3pts. A sensationalteam effort!

PRELIMINARY FINAL - Webee v OldIvanhoe

Werribee set up a rematch with CaulfieldGrammarians and in the process ended OldIvanhoe's season, when they defeated theHoes by 14 points in a very entertainingpreliminary final . Old Ivanhoe controlled theearly passages of play and went to the firstbreak leading by seven points . The Bees cutthis to four points at the long break and asthe second half got underway the match wasmost certainly in the balance . Three goals toone in the third quarter gave Werribee a 10-point buffer heading into the last term andthey would have blown the Hoes away if notfor some wasteful kicking at goal, whichyielded 2 .6 . Old Scotch's forward line, they boast theIi'_es of Cations, Rodski, Watts & Hosking .hforward quartet has kicked-1~proximately 175 goals! Their on-ballingi=. :~ion with Josephs, Lewis, Philalay an d

is both tough and exciting and thei r.rise led by Quail and Prendergast is very

olid . But the most impressive characteristicaot :f this team, apart from their coach (!) is

i'at 'iey never give up . If you then cast your-e ( ver Old Xaverians and look at their

ard line, they boast the leading and mos t_ressive forward in O'Donnell who has

hooted 68 goals in Section 1 football . Therer~re no other goal kickers in the top five, yettey are the leading point scorer in theompetition and lead Old Scotch by 382ptson average per game 21 .22pts) . Why? Theeason being is they run in numbers an d

re the ball around . If O'Donnell doesn'tyou, then Lopresti, Quinn, Biddlecombe

die will! Their on-balling division le d. Captain 'daring' Dixon, are very physica l

i d c :plosive . Their back third led by Ross &'aan is inventive and creates a lot of run .

now the stage is set . Questions could be ;I Ross take Rodski and Quail take

O'Donnell? For me the answer lies betweenCHF and CHB! Barnett in the middle for OldScotch will need to give his on-ballers firstuse if they are to win this . Rodski andHosking will need to provide marking optionsin this zone throughout the entire game, ifthey are to win this . My answer - they won't- Xavs by l4pts .

Caulfield G , -i , ns v

After enjoying the week off, Caulfield will beprimed to take on Werribee at the TrevorBarker Oval in what shapes as a classicgrand final . Caulfield will be full ofconfidence after defeating the Bees by 31points in the second semi-final, whenBrowne, Foster and Napier ran riot . TheBees, however, will have benefited from thetough slog against Old Ivanhoe in thepreliminary final and will be battle hardenedfor the big clash . Caulfield surprisedeveryone by Nvinning straight through to thebig one but it will be no shock if they take theflag on Saturday, although the match is a realtoss of the coin affair. The week's rest mayjust get Caulfield over the line .
