SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 02

On the pitch, Leeds United won the League for the 3rd time and Liverpool won the FA Cup, beating Sunderland 2-0. The Vase saw one of our own, Wimborne Town cap a fine season with a thrilling 5-3 win over Guiseley at Wembley, in what is still considered one of the best (if not the best) one ever. In the international game, Latvia having gained their independence in 1991, played their first FIFA-recognised International match in April 1992. The game in Bucharest against Romania was a 2-0 defeat with the Romanian goals from Pavel Badea and (the better known) Dan Petrescu. Off the pitch, John Major won a narrow Election victory and Bill Clinton was set to become the 42nd President of the United States. In the Royal Family, Prince Charles and Princess Diana broke up. Frankie Howerd died in April 1992 and Absolutely Fabulous made its small screen debut, whilst Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey was a hit on the big screen in early 1992. Right Said Fred’s “Deeply Dippy” topped the charts in April 1992.

In local county FA competitions the Russell-Cotes Cup went to Bashley, with a 2-1 win over AFC Totton. The three county Senior Cups were decided as below. Dorset- Wimborne Town 1-0 Bridport Hampshire- Waterlooville 1-0 Havant Town Wiltshire- Wollen Sports 3-1 Downton The only Wessex side to taste glory were the Magpies from Cuthbury with their solitary goal enough to defeat West Dorset side Bridport, who finished 9th of 22 in the Western League First Division. Downton at the time were playing in the Hampshire League ending 11th of 18 in the top flight and at Fratton Park, Havant who were enjoying their first season after winning our League in 1991 came off second best against the team they merged with some six years further down the line. This was the sixth season of the Wessex League with one Division of 19 which was one less than the previous season after Havant had been promoted to the Southern League. If the membership then is compared with today, four Clubs have “gone up in the world”, eleven are still with the League, albeit two with name changes, Swanage Town & Herston have returned to the Dorset Premier League and three sadly no longer exist - AFC Lymington, Ryde Sports and Sholing Sports. AFC Lymington had been formed three seasons earlier through a merger between Lymington and Wellworthy Athletic and spent ten seasons in the League, winning the Title three times before another merger, this time with New Milton, saw them become Lymington and New Milton FC. This was Ryde Sports second season in the League after leaving their almost iconic home at Partlands for Smallbrook in the Summer of 1989. They were to complete seven seasons in the League before withdrawing in the 1997/98 season when all the finance and resources went into establishing Speedway at the Stadium. Sholing Sports had been a powerful force in the Hampshire League before joining the Wessex League in its inaugural season but sadly folded straight after the first game of the season, their Birch Lawn home has long since disappeared under housing. On the subject of Grounds 1991/92 was Thatcham’s final tilt at their Lancaster Close home before the move to their current home Waterside Park whilst BAT and AFC Totton were playing at Southern Gardens and Testwood Park respectively. The season in question saw Wimborne Town, founder members of the League having joined from the Western League, become the fourth different Club to put their name on the League Trophy, finishing six points clear to complete a wonderful season for the Club. With each team only playing 36, goals were not so plentiful in number as in some other seasons with nobody topping the hundred mark though there were one or two high figures in the goals against column with the bottom two Clubs being left rather adrift. This was long before the introduction of Full Time so it is difficult to find any details as regards results and scorers and we can only offer the full League Table shown here. On the Cup front Thatcham retained the League Cup they had won twelve months earlier by beating Eastleigh 1-0 at Havant’s ground. Entry to the FA Cup and Vase seemed rather restricted, unless a number of Clubs chose not to enter, and Romsey fared best in the major Competition beating Newbury and Sussex Club Selsey 6-1 on the road in the 2nd Qualifying Round before bowing out 2-0 to Isthmian Premier League Marlow on their home patch.

But as we know the Vase was a different story with Wimborne going all the way to the Final before securing a 5-3 win over the then holders Guiseley from Yorkshire and the Northern Premier League. That Wembley place had come courtesy of a 2-0 aggregate win over Bamber Bridge, with both goals coming in the home second leg. The story for our local teams being reproduced here, whilst Wimborne’s Vase story was recounted in Newsletter #44 from last season. There was no promotion or relegation at the end of the season as the League looked forward to season 7 after what had been very much WIMBORNE TOWN’s year.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 02

A WORTHWHILE BORDER CROSSING Deep down in to the Programme collection this week and slightly above Wessex League standard and memories of the no doubt long forgotten (or never heard of) Texaco Cup, a Competition that ran for five seasons and involved Clubs from both England and Scotland. 1974/75 was the final season of its existence and Southampton were one of sixteen English Clubs who took part, whether by invitation or application is unknown. The start of the Competition was played pre-season with the sixteen Clubs split into groups of four in which every Club played the other once. Saints drew at Luton and beat West Ham and Orient to top the group and move in to the quarter finals. Scotland seemingly had no such qualification and simply placed Ayr United, Aberdeen, Hearts and Rangers in to the last eight. Each quarter final tie was a two-legged meeting between England and Scotland and Saints drew Rangers with the first leg at Ibrox. With relatives in Ayrshire who were Rangers fans I made the long haul north and they kindly took me to Ibrox, impressive but nothing like the Stadium it is now. Depending what you read the attendance on the evening was between thirty-five and forty thousand and I was impressed by the warm welcome the Saints players received when they came out to warm up. When they re-appeared for the kick

off and Ian Turner took his place in goal the reception from behind him was awful. When I enquired as to why I was told “he is wearing a green jersey, no goalkeeper ever wears a green jersey at Ibrox”. Welcome to the Old Firm! The game went very much Saints way with Peter Osgood giving them the lead, Rangers equalising before the break, and further goals from Osgood and Gerry O’Brien ensuring a 3-1 victory. Nearly 20,000 were at The Dell for the second leg including a huge contingent of Rangers supporters, some of whom according to one newspaper report “were fuelled by drink and intent on re-enacting Bannockburn”. However, an early goal from Paul Gilchrist and a subsequent own goal saw Saints through. They beat Oldham in the semi-final and beat Newcastle one nil at the Dell in the first leg of the Final before going down three nil at St James Park. The Clubs have never met since in a competitive fixture but I recall a Testimonial Match, for former trainer George Horsfall, at the Dell on a Sunday afternoon when there were coaches galore from all over Scotland – and they had been in Aberdeen twenty-four hours earlier!

For Saints aficionados the line-up at Ibrox was: - Ian Turner, Steve Mills, David Peach, Hughie Fisher, Paul Bennett, Mel Blyth, Brian O’Neil, Mike Channon. Peter Osgood, Gerry O’Brien and Jim Steele. The two Rangers full backs on the evening – Sandy Jardine and John Greig – eventually totalled over nine hundred appearances between them for the Club which Greig also managed as well in due course. And on the Saints front Paul Bennett probably played for Road Sea in the inaugural season of the Wessex League. At the end of the season Rangers were again Scottish Champions whilst Saints finished in the lower reaches of the Second Division. It is appreciated that this will appeal more to the Southampton side of the Newsletter readership but my Programme collection has been slimmed down many times over the years and now consists of non- league issues and half a dozen Saints matches against “unusual” opponents. I have no Programmes to remind me of my many visits to Fratton Park but if anybody has one relating to a “special” game please send in a photo of the Cover and brief details of the game and we will happily “write it up”.

Clubs who have organised or are arranging pre-season games are requested to let me know through email or Twitter so that we can build up a list for games planned. Goes without saying that such games can only proceed once the guidelines provide for them. Thanks in advance.

HAMPSHIRE COMBINATION & DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE

Here is the proposed constitution for next season which has been reviewed by the (Hampshire Combination & Development) League Committee. Given it is highly likely their League is going to make a late start this season, they’ve tried to average out Division size for all groups at around 10. Three clubs have entered two teams in the Under 18 competition so have split the teams from those clubs into different divisions, otherwise (apart from the Saturday Premier)

the split is on a geographical basis. It is understood that here are a couple of clubs who have yet to commit to join so the Committee will wish to be given the usual authority to update the constitution if the need arises. INTERNATIONAL CLEARANCE

There’s been a slight current amendment to the rules For any player you wish to register whose previous club was outside England, you must obtain international clearance from the FA. Usually you would be expected to wait 30 days at most for clearance to be granted. The FA have advised that due to the pandemic, this maximum waiting time has been cut to a maximum of 7 days. Please don’t forget that you need to get clearance for any players whose last club was OUTSIDE England- so that includes Wales and Scotland.

CLUB NEWS

Folland Sports require an enthusiastic new Club Secretary to handle administrative matters for their Wessex League One and Hampshire Combination teams. The club also anticipate entering an under 18s team in the CSYL (City of Southampton Youth Football League). This provides an exciting opportunity to take a route into local football administration with a very long-established and respected club. The outgoing secretary, in his continuing role at the club as Treasurer, will provide all necessary instruction and support to the successful candidate. Should you be interested, then do please contact Jason Simmonds (Vice Chairman) on 07920 513552 or [email protected] Totton & Eling are looking for a coach and a match day physio to join their reserve team for the coming season. Please contact [email protected] for more information or to register your interest in either position.

THE DERBY

There’s nothing quite like a local match to whet the appetite even moreso when both teams are scrapping it out at the head of the table, looking for promotion. There are various theories as to where the term came from. Some people think it comes from the horse race of the same name- celebrated as a big event, as this has been around since the late 1700s this looks to be the most likely origin. But others suggest it comes from the name of the city itself, and another reference to Shrovetide games when local rivalries were quite literally fought out on the streets. The most well-known would involve Ashbourne, a Derbyshire town, where since the 12th century, two teams from opposite sides of the town play a game called the Royal Shrovetide Football Match (also known as ‘Hugball’) between the ‘Uppers’ and the ‘Downers’ (or Up’Ards and Down’Ards)– those from opposite sides of the Henmore Brook river that runs through the town. The goals are three miles apart at Sturston Mill and Clifton Mill. The “game” in February 2018 led to a number of cars being damaged during the event. Not to be outdone, the city of Derby when the young men of the parish of All Saints challenged those from nearby St Peter's. is also a candidate, Here all men over the age of 18 took part, trying to force the ball from one parish into the other. In 1731 the mayor made an unsuccessful attempt to put a stop to the game, and this was repeated every year by his successors until 1848, when military intervention was called upon. From then on, the name was attributed to any football match played with fierce partisanship between neighbouring clubs. A more obscure one is that it stems from the Stanley Park, the area between Anfield and Goodison Park that was owned by the Earl of Derby but given the age of the term this is somewhat unlikely? To a certain extent many of our league games are Derby games but thankfully the high drama and techniques employed are more refined than those experienced on the streets in history.

Answers to the quiz from last week- G, D, B, R, O, N, N, I, T, A, W

Which when re-arranged give the overall answer of Brading Town

A reminder to all our readers, if you want an event, a call for volunteers, or similar promoted- please do get in touch with me and we shall see what we can do for you. I am also on the lookout for stories about our teams so of course those too would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks, ED.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 02

WEEK 2 ROUND UP A reminder for all those teams looking for new kits for the upcoming season, FA Rules clearly state that NO player, including the goalkeeper, shall be permitted to wear black shirts or very dark shirts. This includes shirts where the back is primarily black with only a light coloured number. If in any doubt, please send an image of your proposed shirt and we will advise if it is acceptable. As advised before, please note that the date of our Annual General Meeting is now Sunday 19th July; with the next F.A. meeting scheduled for Tuesday 14th July, this will allow the League constitution to have been advised by the new date together with an awareness of rule changes. We also then may have further advice on how to prepare for our return to playing football. Some clubs have yet to register to join the Zoom meeting. They’ve been emailed to register as soon as possible as it is likely fines will be issued otherwise. Clubs are entitled to two representatives though only one can vote. Just a quick plug. The (306 page) centenary book has been published and is available now, it can be obtained by contacting the Bournemouth FA directly at [email protected] cost is £20.00. Their office is only open a couple of days a week at this time, but the book is bound to provoke some interest amongst local supporters. It’ll keep me quiet for a while that’s for sure. Also received is news concerning the Bankes Charity Cup competition. Please visit wwwbankescup.co.uk. This will be the only method teams can enter their cup competitions. There you’ll find details and information about rules and the closing date of the 26th July 2020. And the last word this week, the news regarding the various announcements that the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport made on Thursday represent a clear positive step towards the resumption of the National League System. The following statement is on www.thefa.com and has been advised to clubs.

• We welcome the announcement and publication of the Government’s Return to recreational sport framework today which means we can look forward to the safe return of competitive grassroots football. Please visit www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-guidance-on-phased-return-of-sport-and-recreation/return-to-recreational-team-sport-framework

• We are now working to submit a comprehensive action plan and related guidance for Government approval as outlined in DCMS’s publication. Once approved, we will publish new guidance for the grassroots football community. We will confirm timings as soon as we are able. In the meantime, competitive grassroots football can prepare to return and look forward to the start of the new season.

• Please continue to refer to the latest guidance documents for adult players, coaches, facility operators, parents and carers involved in re-starting grassroots football activity which came into effect from 4th July until a further update is provided, as a reminder please visit www.thefa.com/news/2020/jul/03/grassroots-football-covid-19-update-030720

• in addition to the latest Government guidance on COVID-19. Please also note that guidance is being developed for clubs with teams competing in the National League System (NLS) and will be shared with those clubs directly in due course.

The FA know that we are all waiting eagerly for the Club Guidance document. They are looking to issue this with any headlines as soon as possible following the above announcement linked to their submissions to DCMS. There are still some unique aspects to the NLS where there is a need to get further approval from, which they continue to have dialogue with DCMS over.
