INSURANCE

This was circulated to clubs last weekend, but are you covered- please review your Policy as a matter of some urgency, with the responsibility on our clubs to be sure they have all checked their cover- it is in their interest to do so. “On Tuesday 12 November 2019 a court in Manchester found in favour of a semi-professional

player who suffered a broken ankle playing for Radcliffe Borough in a game against Ossett Town. The league recommended insurance policy did not protect Ossett from damages or legal fees for the claimant should this case be lost, which it was, now leaving them with a £135,000 court order. Not only does this put the entire club and the future of football in the town in jeopardy but also opens up the floodgates for all injured sports participants to successfully sue and win substantial money from the person who injured them and their club. This can then filter down to recreational sport like 5-a-side football where an individual can sue an opponent should they receive an injury during a game. This will change not only football but sports participation throughout the country at every level. Can you afford to pay a player injured at your club £135,000, because Ossett cannot.

Ossett United were formed in July 2018 following the merger of Ossett Town and Ossett Albion to help bring together and hopefully strengthen football in the Town. The club now play at Ingfield, the former home of Ossett Town Football Club, where the decision to sell the only asset, the ground, is now looking like the only option. Chairman of Ossett Phil Smith said. “I have had other chairman throughout the league making contact and raising their own concerns. They are worried that an immeasurable amount of claims can now be raised from previous incidents at their club resulting in them actually losing their football club, it’s quite a scary situation we are all now in. I urge all sports clubs to check their insurance policies immediately, however, that will only protect future events, not the ones in the past like the one that now threatens our club.” As a club Ossett United are consulting as a board with their trusted advisors and their landlords, Ossett Town, as to the options that lay ahead of them with the looming option of selling the ground currently being the talk of the town.”

MIDWEEK MATCH REPORTS

John Gorman writes FLEET TOWN 4-1 AMESBURY TOWN THIS was the first ever meeting between the two Clubs and on an evening nowhere near so cold as the forecast promised it was an enjoyable game with, on the night, the right result. Amesbury are in a considerable state of transition under new management and at times it looked as though the players, especially at the back, were still getting to know each other added to which the home side took their chances. Amesbury had the slope in their favour in the opening half and rather wasted an early free kick from a dangerous position, home keeper Aiden Upward claiming the ball completely unchallenged. The home side soon began to dominate possession with a cross from Billy Oram being well held by Jordan Tewkesbury in the visiting goal and a Paul Coventry header scrambled off the line – that was a chance but the header lacked power. Fleet’s Aaron Redford showed a willingness and ability all evening to try his luck from distance and Tewksbury was at full stretch to turn one effort round the post. An Amesbury attack saw the home goalkeeper and defence operating on different wavelengths but Upward recovered in time to avert any danger and after Redford was too high from a right wing cross the home side took the lead midway through the half. Full back James SMITH worked his way along the by line on the right and drove the ball low and hard at the near post where Tewkesbury, slightly out of position, could only parry the ball inside the post. It could possibly have been classed as an own goal but Fleet have credited Smith so happily Smith’s goal it is. Amesbury’s Jack Francis talked his way in to the sin bin and Tewkesbury denied Redford again at full stretch before another effort from the same player led to Fleet’s second goal ten minutes before the break. The shot was driven through a crowded area, Tewkesbury could only parry same and COVENTRY slotted the loose ball in to the net. Amesbury regained their full complement of players and immediately came close to halving the deficit. A free kick on the left – the only bad challenge of the game - was turned in to the net in a goalmouth scramble but the offside flag came to the home side’s rescue, though only for a matter of minutes. The clock was hovering round the forty five minute mark when Ewan HAYLOR, probably the youngest (and smallest) player on the pitch and very skilful with the ball at his feet, cleverly turned a defender and scored from a very narrow angle. The Amesbury celebrations suggested there was no lack of team spirit in the ranks and they went in for their tea with Fleet just one goal to the good. HT 2-1

Page 7: #21 - irp-cdn.multiscreensite.com News 21 2019-20.pdfSunday, 24 November 2019 Page 3 of 20 SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 21 ARE YOU LISTENING? The Sydenhams

The home side were very rapidly out of their blocks on the re-start with Tewkesbury superbly saving a close range effort from Coventry and beating away another Redford thunderbolt. Amesbury introduced Assistant Manager Christer Warren – who has played on larger stages – to the fray but before he could have any effect or perhaps even touch the ball Fleet increased their lead. A free kick from the right touchline saw the defenders leave the ball to each other and Eddie SMITH’s finish at the far post was clinical. Fleet had a further “goal” disallowed for offside and a two on one break by Amesbury was similarly thwarted by the closest of offside decisions. Perhaps buoyed by that the visitors pressed forward with Haylor denied by the keeper’s legs and a header from Jamie Ritchie only an inch or so too high with Upward struggling to regain his line following a corner. But any hopes of a comeback were finally quelled by a fourth goal for Fleet

as the visiting defence again got in a tangle and Eddie Smith’s square pass left COVENTRY with the simplest of finishes. From that point it was game over and though there was no slacking in effort from either side there was little further action in either goalmouth as the game rather drifted to its close. As previously stated, the home side deserved their win but Amesbury were far from outclassed and can only improve game by game if the attitude shown last night is maintained. My first visit to Fleet for four years – the last Wessex League game I saw there

was in 2002 – and a warm welcome and enjoyable evening. The only downside – six cautions and two sin bins in a game played in perfectly acceptable spirit. One begins to despair. FT 4-1 Mike Robins writes RINGWOOD TOWN 2-1 BEMERTON HEATH HARLEQUINS SOMETHING of a surprise result given league positions, but the hosts outfought their Salisbury opponents in all departments to deserve the three points this evening. The early pressure though came from the visitors winning a succession of corners that they couldn’t convert, but the breakthrough did come on 24 minutes when Justin BENNETT curled a shot from outside the penalty area that was flicked on to the post by young Ringwood keeper Nick Harvey. The ball wasn’t cleared and the return cross was poked home from close range. This perhaps should have been the catalyst to push one for more goals, but the Harlequins found themselves on the back foot with the best chance for the hosts falling on 30 minutes when a shot was tipped over the bar. Ringwood were unlucky not to be on level terms at the break gradually coming more and more into the game. HT 0-1 The run of play continued in the early part of the half, and Ringwood got the deserved equaliser six minutes ion, when Nasim MEDDAH tried his luck from some 25 yards and the ball flew into the top corner with Paddy Creese unable to get across to reach the ball. The Bemerton keeper had to be at his best to stop further chances from Ryan Hamm on the hour and skipper Jack Barton in particular. Bemerton missed a chance to get their noses back in front on 67 when Harvey spilled a shot but recovered tin time to smother the ball. At the other end Creese was beaten by a speculative strike from Charlie Hitchings but the ball nestled on the roof of the net. With time running out Bennett again had a chance to put Bemerton ahead but planted the shot wide when well placed. Ringwood snatched the winning goal in the dying moments of the game when a corner was scrambled home in a packed goalmouth, with HAMM getting the final touch. FT 2-1

Roger Allen writes CHRISTCHURCH 2-0 BOURNEMOUTH CHRISTCHURCH continued their impressive run of only one defeat in eight League games and move to second place in the table with a deserved victory over their local rivals.

Poppies had the first chance when Karol Rog fired over but in a sign of what was to come, Sam Jones was forced into a smart save from a Ron Frost header at a corner. Frost who is known for his long throws had a fine game, bossing midfield and being perhaps unlucky not to win Priory's man of the match award. The first moment of controversy came in the 13th minute when Luke Stone pounced onto a through ball but was bundled over by a clear push in the back when about to shoot. No penalty said the ref and Stone let his understandable frustration boil over to be awarded with 10 minutes in the sin bin. In fact the referee had a strange night, issuing at least 2 cautions for minor fouls, whilst appearing to ignore more serious offences. The loss of a player did not hold back the home side's momentum and just before Stone reappeared, they took the lead. Not only was the pace of Christchurch's attacks causing the Poppies defence problems but set pieces (either long throws or corners) that were planted under the cross bar were a constant threat. And it was from a Brad Cherrett corner that Max WILCOCK rose the highest to head Christchurch into the lead. Poppies had a series of escapes as the ball flashed around their goal area but until the final moments of the half they did come nearest to scoring when Rafael Santos unleashed a screamer of a shot from 25 yards that crashed onto the cross bar and back into play. However in the first minute of added time Christchurch doubled their lead. Kyle GRAHAM picked up the ball near the half way line and was given the freedom of Hurn Bridge to advance to 20 yards from goal when he placed a shot past Jones into the bottom corner. HT 2-0 In the second half Bournemouth were better and it was a much more even game. Both sides had chances but neither were able to get in a decisive blow and Christchurch were happy to allow their first half dominance to see them through to another win. FT 2-0

MIDWEEK ROUNDUP

For a change League fixtures, especially in the Premier Division, made up the bulk of Tuesday’s programme with the addition of just one Cup Tie. Nine games in the Premier Division and a reversal in fortunes for leaders Alresford Town. On Saturday they lost for the third time this season and the Clubs immediately below them in the table made up ground. On Tuesday they won – a Craig Harding hat trick helping them to defeat Shaftesbury by four goals to two- and other results meant they increased their lead to seven points. The surprise result of the evening was at Portland where the home side went down by four goals to three to Solent University. Ethan Taylor scored a hat trick for the victors in what was Portland’s first home league defeat of the season and a result that took Solent out of the bottom two. Christchurch climbed in to second place, two first half goals giving them victory over Bournemouth and their fourth win in a row, and AFC Portchester gained revenge over Fareham, winning the second “El Creekio” derby of the season 3-1 at Cams Alders. The experienced trio of Jason Parish, Dan Wooden and Steve Ramsey were the names on the Portchester score sheet. Brockenhurst suffered their fourth successive defeat when losing two one at home to arch rivals Bashley, a late penalty not proving enough against goals from Conor Whiteley and Cameron Beard. Hamworthy United and AFC Stoneham shared four goals and the points at the County Ground and there was a welcome win for Tadley Calleva at Barlows Park where goals from Clive Makoni and Callum Sweeney proved too much for Hamble Club despite the almost inevitable goal from Nathan Lynch. On the island Cowes Sports dismal run continued as they lost for the sixth game in a row, Lymington returning to the mainland with four goals, four different scorers and three points under their belt. Four goals also at the other end of the County where Fleet Town recorded their second home win in beating Amesbury by four goals to one. The Amesbury side is very much in transition at present but they contributed to an entertaining game and will surely improve as the new Management team make their presence known. Just two games in Division One and again a surprise result with Bemerton Heath going down to their third away defeat in a row as Ringwood claimed a welcome victory. Justin Bennett gave the Wiltshire side the lead

only for Nasim Meddah to level the scores before Ryan Hamm notched a very late winner. In the other game Follands gained a welcome point in a one all draw at New Milton. The one Cup Tie on the evening was between Verwood and former members Swanage Town & Herston at Potterne Park in the Dorset Senior Cup. The tie had been abandoned once and postponed once at Swanage so was switched to Verwood who gratefully took advantage with a 5-1 victory, with two goals from Dan Hunt to earn a home tie with Western League Bridport in the next round. One postponement on Wednesday with Baffins Milton Rovers having problems with an irrigation ditch on parts of their usually immaculate playing surface means their Premier Division fixture with Horndean will have to be re-scheduled. In Division One Totton & Eling and Andover Town shared the points in a one all draw whilst next door Petersfield went out of the Russell-Cotes Cup by the odd goal in three to AFC Totton, Will Webb scoring the Rams goal as that gave their more illustrious opponents a fright.

Andover New Street became probably the first Cup Finalists of the season after a 3-1 win at Hampshire Premier League Overton United in the North Hants Cup semi Final. The other semi-final between Whitchurch and Tadley is in a couple of weeks with the Final probably in the far distant reaches of the season. Finally congratulations to former Sydenhams Club Eastleigh who reached the Second Round Proper of the Emirates FA Cup on Tuesday and now face Crewe Alexandra at home

for a chance to mix with the “big boys”. And with the game being televised it will be a lucrative afternoon, different world.

CLUB NEWS

Max Buckler made his 100th appearance for Portland United as did 21 year old Charlie Wagstaffe at Hamble Club last weekend to join the ever growing list of centurions across our patch. Well done. There’s a new face at Barlows Park, centre forward Clive Makoni has joined Tadley Calleva, he has also played for Bashley and Dorchester Town amongst others, and was one of a handful of youth team players awarded with their first professional contracts by AFC Bournemouth back in 2012, one of whom was current Tadley player Ryan Case. On the debit side Daryll Phillips has moved from Tadley linking up with Alresford Town, Two new arrivals at the Victory Stadium, US Portsmouth have signed Harry Bedford and Andrew Todd, the former has seven goals to his credit thus far with Petersfield Town; and at Hamworthy United, Louis Coulson has moved across from Bournemouth. Fareham Town’s Jack Breed made the starting eleven for the Gibraltar under 21 side against Belarus in the week, not a fairy tale ending though as they went down 2-0 at their Victoria Stadium home in the UEFA Under-21 Championship Qualifying match. Ben Sunley has joined Whitchurch United on dual registration with Winchester City, whilst Amesbury Town have similarly signed Ewan Haylor on dual registration papers from the Citizens and are also looking for a physio on match days- interested parties should contact the club directly. Alresford Town have also signed a couple of players on the same basis from Sholing- Sam Tonks and Aidan Radford. On the Isle of Wight, Cowes Sports manager, Steve Rutter, has stepped down as first team manager due to his full-time role at Cowes Enterprise College with the Chelsea Foundation, but will remain involved with the Yachtsmen in the role of Director of Football. Max Draper has been appointed in his place. Fawley are looking for people to join their Senior Management team with a first team coach and a goalkeeping coach being required, anyone interested should contact the club directly. Midfielder Howard Nhemachena has moved from Bournemouth to Andover Town, and goalkeeper James Mayo is another departure from Victoria Park, heading to Brockenhurst. Also at Brockenhurst we note that Jude Nwachukwu has made his 200th appearance for the Badgers.

PEWSEY VALE It is with much regret that the League received this week Pewsey Vale’s resignation from our League to take place with immediate effect. At the root of their problems is the decision made by the FA in the close season to laterally move the Club from the Hellenic League to the Sydenhams League and the further decision of the FA to then reject the Club’s appeal against the move. The Club stresses that their objection is based purely on the availability of players and management as regards the travel and they have nothing but admiration for the organisation and running of the Sydenhams League. When making such decisions it is doubtful as to whether the FA take into account the “human” problems of such moves – indeed how can they be aware of them – but they do exist though on this occasion the fact that the Club had previously been members of the Sydenhams League perhaps played a part in their thinking. The one thing that Pewsey cannot resolve is simply that their geographical location puts them on the fringe of the Western, Hellenic and Sydenhams Leagues meaning that their overall travel is going to be greater than most. In the last thirty years the Club has played in the Western League Division One. The Hellenic League Premier and West Divisions, the Wiltshire League (one season) and the Sydenhams League. In their last season in the Western League in 2000/01 they faced journeys to Bath, Exmouth, Torrington and Ilfracombe whilst in their time in the Hellenic League Premier they travelled to Slimbridge, Hereford, Didcot and North Leigh. This season, had they remained in the same League as last season could well have faced three journeys to Hereford and one to Malvern in Worcestershire – all longer trips than to Portsmouth though tempered by some players living in the Swindon area. Their earlier spell in the Sydenhams League was for seven seasons from 2010/11 to 2016/17 in the course of which they finished fourth, fifth and eighth in Division One before finishing last in their final season and returning to the Hellenic League Division One West. Their overall record during that time reads as follows;

PL W D L F A PTS 232 79 41 112 381 510 278

The figures are badly affected by their final season when they conceded 157 goals. The League is fully aware that the decision to withdraw has not been made lightly and has offered advice and help where possible but it proves again how difficult it is to run a Club at this level and how hard those that do so work. Player commitment is something of a scourge in this day and age – what is the answer when the management and players at ANY Club simply walk out? Pewsey Vale will continue the season with a Club in the Wiltshire League. They have always been the friendliest of Clubs to visit during their times with us and we wish them well in the future.

WEEKEND MATCH REPORTS

Roger Allen writes BASHLEY 3-0 BAFFINS MILTON ROVERS A gloomy day and an early start but an enjoyable game all the same. Baffins had the lions share of the first half hour but Bashley came into the game in the latter part of that half and never let their grip on the game go during the whole of the second period. Thomas Scutt for Baffins had the first chance as he skipped past his marker on the goal line but Dan Kempson made a good save at the expense of a corner. Then Brandon Miller had a header pushed onto the cross bar by Kempson. Bashley had another escape just after the half hour when Rudi Blankson had a shot parried by Kempson. Scutt pounced on the rebound and his shot rebounded into Kempson's hands off the inside of a post. We weren't to know it at the time but this was the turning point in the game as Bashley came more and more into the game. In the last few moments of the half the Bash had an excellent chance to score but Harry Bunce's shot was saved with his feet by Baffins keeper Cameron Scott. HT 0-0

Harry McGrath had an early chance for the home side in the second period whilst at the other end a Robbie Taw corner bounced to safety off the top of the cross bar. Just after the hour on 64 minutes Bashley took the lead. They won a free kick close to the touch line and from the cross a header was saved by Scott. However with Scott on the ground the ball fell to Lewis ROSS who headed past the stranded keeper. Ten minutes later they doubled their lead. A throw in came to Harry MORGAN just inside the corner of the penalty area and he had a clear shot to the far post with his

shot hitting the inside of the side netting. On 83 minutes it was three as a Baffins defender lost possession near the half way line. The ball was picked up by Conor Whiteley who unselfishly squared the ball to an unmarked George CROUCHER who scored with ease. By now Baffins were a well beaten side and Harry Bunce had a chance to make it four but his shot was beaten away by Scott. FT 3-0 John Gorman writes ANDOVER TOWN 1-1 EAST COWES VICTORIA On a dull miserable afternoon, though the rain did not arrive until the final whistle, this was by no means a classic on a perfectly playable pitch but a game full of effort and endeavour and lacking any real threat from either side in front of goal. The home side largely dominated possession throughout but it is goals that win matches and they, on the day, badly lacked a cutting edge. Andover started brightly with a Zac Hine shot inches wide, a corner that was cleared with difficulty and Hine failing to make contact with a cross at the far post before Vics first real attack ended with Joe Butcher blocked by Brendon Holmes in the act of shooting and keeper Dave Tasker saving Jimmi Burton’s follow up. Nhemachena, making his Andover debut and looking very comfortable with the ball at his feet, crossed low from the left but there were no blue shirts in the area and there was the same lack of threat when Holmes crossed from the other flank. Full back Adam Pattison joined the attack and was only just wide and were the game to be decided on corners Andover would already have been out of sight. The home side continued to drive forward with Higgins heading In to the side netting and Rueben Smith firing over after Owen Trapnell and Hine created the best opening of the half. Vics put themselves in danger by conceding a rather bizarre free kick when a defender picked the ball up for a throw before it had crossed the line but the kick was missed by all in the six yard box. Vics, while defending solidly, had shown little attacking threat and it was within ten minutes of half time before they won their first corner with Liam Newbold heading over. A Butcher cross was rather unceremoniously hacked to safety before, with the half time tea on the table, Vics took the lead. Burton’s pace took him clear on the right, Butcher controlled the cross, unselfishly pushed the ball to his left and Tyler GREENSLADE beat Tasker from twelve yards to make the aforementioned tea taste all the sweeter in the visitors dressing room. HT 0-1 Vics replaced Greenslade with the speedy Elias Ahmed on the re-start and the new boy swiftly won a corner after being allowed to run on from position that looked more than a suspicion of offside, Burton found himself in a one on one situation with the goalkeeper but slid the ball the wrong side of the post before the referee gave a “correct” offside decision when the flag stayed down. Steinbusse was at full stretch in the Vics goal to turn a Hine free kick round the post and Tom Pattison put a free header wide. The home side replaced Pattison and, surprisingly, Holmes before Ahmed met a Burton cross first time at the far post and bought the save of the afternoon from Tasker. The home side then had three free kicks in quick succession with the first two being blocked and the third bringing the scores level. The kick came from wide on the left, for once the defence hesitated, and Adam PATTISON headed home from close range with some twelve minutes remaining on the clock. Burton was denied by a last ditch tackle at the other end and when Andover broke quickly Ben Emans pulled his shot across the face of goal. Town came close to taking the spoils when Josh Bertie saw a snap shot cannon off the bar before Ahmed beat Tasker and the post in another Vics break. With time running out Vics looked the victim of a very harsh decision. Forward and defender chased a through ball, there appeared to be nothing more than a collision and the referee, looking well placed, gave a free kick to Andover, a decision “accepted” by all, players and spectators alike. The referee’s attention was then drawn to the upraised flag of his assistant and after the briefest of conversations the defender was shown a red card. The resulting free kick was driven straight at the keeper and stoppage time saw no real further action and the points were shared. Andover will feel that given their monopoly of possession they should have won but on the day they hardly created a clear cut chance and the Vics, to their credit, defended superbly to add another away point to the three won a week earlier. Leaving aside the dismissal there was not a single caution, just the occasional word of common sense. It can be done. FT 1-1

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 21

WEEK SEVENTEEN ROUND UP

weekend when happily the weather did not interfere as much as the forecast suggested with only three postponements, all in the Premier Division, while Bemerton Heath had a free day in Division One following Pewsey Vale’s withdrawal.

In the Premier Division it was another good day for the leaders Alresford as they collected three more points whilst the chasing pack largely suffered reversals. Alresford overcame a difficult hurdle at Lymington with a 2-0 victory that by the end of the day was to increase their lead to ten points. Christchurch saw their intended trip to Shaftesbury fall foul of the weather while third place Portland United suffered their second home defeat in five days as Brockenhurst ended a run of four losses with a two goal victory courtesy of goals from Freddie Bullard and a Jude Nwachukwu penalty. Baffins Milton Rovers went down 3-0 in front of the largest attendance of the day at Bashley who have now won their last five at home – three different scorers this time – while AFC Portchester’s home fixture with Hamworthy United also succumbed to the rain. A lone Ryan Wilkins goal gave Hamble Club the points against Fleet Town in the first ever meeting between the Clubs and Fareham’s recent run faltered with a 3-1 defeat at AFC Stoneham with three different scorers for the ”Purples”. At the bottom of the Table Bournemouth’s game with Tadley was a mid-morning call-off but there was another good point for Solent University following their midweek win as they shared six goals with Horndean. Bobby Scott scored twice for the visitors with Davidson Borges doing likewise for the University side. Lastly the “crunch” game at Amesbury went the way of visitors Cowes Sports as they recorded their first win in seven with goals from Ash Brett and Ben Holdsworth to leave their hosts adrift in last place. Hythe & Dibden and Downton started the day in joint first place in Division One with the Waterside Club having the better goal difference and that was still the case at the end of the day with both chalking up home victories, Ringwood rather came down to earth after their midweek win over Bemerton as they went down 6-1 at Hythe – two goals for Sam Woodward – and Tom Moseley was on the mark as Downton defeated New Milton 2-0 at Wick Lane. In a high scoring game at Burnaby Road, and in front of a three figure crowd – an exercise in attracting Service personnel was highly effective - US Portsmouth retained third place with a five three win over Romsey Town – five different names on the home score sheet with Geoff Dunn scoring twice for the visitors – and Alton remained very much in the hunt with their third win in a row, this time 3-0 at Totton & Eling with, as usual, three different scorers which is a nice trait to have. Whitchurch scored six for the second time this season, Nick Yeomans leading the way with two at Follands, and there was a good win for Andover New Street at Newport. The Islanders scored six last week but went down by the odd goal in five as the visitors pushed themselves nearer to the leading group. Petersfield’s run of wins ended at six after a one all draw at Fawley AFC and there was a similar score line at the Portway where East Cowes Vics produced a dogged defensive performance to deny a shot shy Andover Town all three points. Lastly Laverstock & Ford made it three wins in a row as two late Russell Jones goals more than cancelled out Verwood’s opener. All this leaves the positions unchanged at the top with US Portsmouth in third place. Apologies that we cannot be more precise as regards the League’s scorers are concerned but as this is being typed early this morning Full Time is currently “down”. No space this week for our usual look at other local leagues, but just enough to mention two former members’ progress in the Buildbase FA Trophy. Gosport Borough had a goalless draw at Bath City and Salisbury won by the best of seven at home against Hayes & Yeading United to both find themselves in the hat for the 1st Round Proper, with ties scheduled for 14 December. The fixtures update goes through to the end of the calendar year and there’ll be more changes as and when the fixtures concerning Pewsey Vale are reviewed, and also please remember that as such they are liable to change at little or no notice. Thanks for all the information supplied yesterday and especially to those who worked in the morning to get the games played – it will surely stop raining at some stage!
