SEEKING A NEW OPPORTUNITY?

The Sydenhams League Management Team are seeking new members. Interested? Please contact the Vice Chairman, Nick Spencer for a chat – 07780 496314

ROADWORKS IN THE NEW FOREST

A long stretch of the A31 through the New Forest is to close overnight for almost two months, between 9pm and 6am from 7 October- for around seven weeks. So please be warned- and if midweek games take you to or from the Bournemouth and or Poole area please do allow for extra journey time.

The westbound carriageway of the A31 between the M27 junction 2 (for Salisbury and Fawley) and Picket Post and the eastbound carriageway of the A31 between the Ashley Heath roundabout and the M27 junction 1 (for Cadnam) plus slip roads at junctions in those sections will be closed.

We hear that there will be a 50 mph speed limit westbound on the A31 between the entry slip road at M27 junction 1 and Picket Post, and eastbound between the entry slip road at Picket Post and the slip road at M27 junction 1. As an aside it is understood that the above will not to coincide with closures of Blackwater Junction, and of particular import to those visiting Christchurch’s Hurn Bridge ground, which is closed between 8pm and 6am a number of weeknights to allow engineers to begin their preparations for the installation of new traffic lights and kerbs, as well as road widening and surfacing works.

MIDWEEK MATCH REPORTS

James Spring writes CHRISTCHURCH 3-2 PORTLAND UNITED YOU’VE got to love a bit of last minute drama! Portland appeared to have snatched a point but then threw it away. Christchurch started strongly and took an early lead with Kyle GRAHAM tucking away on 6 minutes. But Portland responded well - drawing the home keeper into a fantastic reflex save to tip a stinging effort over the bar, only for the resulting corner to be met by a towering header from Crit CLARKE to restore parity. Portland were now on top and so it was totally against the run of play when Christchurch retook the lead. Beasley gave away possession cheaply in midfield, and Josh KIRKHAM was given far too much time and space to turn and shoot into the bottom corner from the edge of the area. HT 2-1 From then on it was pretty much all Christchurch. They won all the aerial battles and all the second balls, but just couldn't find that third goal to put it to bed. Portland simply weren't at the races and the home goalkeeper didn't have a shot to face in the second half. Even on the rare occasions Portland did get themselves into good areas the final ball was lacking. It looked like Christchurch would see it out comfortably, especially when Portland ended the match with ten men after Jamie Symes became the second United player of the night to be sin binned, but then into injury time Portland won a throw level with the box. For once they won the header, and an almighty scramble followed with eventually resulted in the ball being poked home on the line Max BUCKLER. It looked offside and Christchurch were livid, but by hook or by crook it looked like United had got out of jail. But there was one last twist. Christchurch launched one last attack, and no doubt to Portland's immense frustration they won it on a set piece. A long hoof into the box wasn't dealt with at all and it fell perfectly to the feet of the totally unmarked Brad CHERRETT at the back post to rifle home and seal the points for the hosts. Agony for Portland, though I'm sure even they would admit it would've been daylight robbery had they left with anything. FT 3-2 Gary Day writes TOTTON & ELING 1-0 ANDOVER NEW STREET THIS was a League Cup tie between two Division 1 clubs, Totton & Eling having reached this stage by knocking out Premier side Solent University FC whilst Andover New Street had a bye. There had been short heavy showers in the area all day and another occurred around 7pm but, as was the case in similar circumstances a week ago, it is pleasing to report the Millers Park pitch stood up well. An excellent 40-yard knock by Scott for the visitors found Lock who crossed in but the alert Stacey cleared for a corner. This early interception virtually set the pattern of the match from there. Totton & Eling took a tenth minute lead when a free-kick was played into the box and Kana’Ah did well to keep it in close to the dead-ball line, his firm and low cross found the lunging boot of Street defender Keogh who had the misfortune to force the ball into his own goal. The Millers defended their lead and kept the visitors at bay with keeper Eyres deflecting a firm and low Lock effort away with his legs. Another fine ball from Scott found Lock, he crossed and Keogh charged in at the back post but his effort found the side netting. HT 1-0

Street had most of the play in the second half but they were up against some determined defending by the home side. The hosts had a couple of breakaways most notably one that sent Spencer clear but, with Street keeper Baxter bearing down on him, his attempted chip was off the mark. Street continued on their quest for an equaliser but Lachowicz got in an excellent blocking tackle on Lock and when Lock played the ball inside to Sweeney, his shot missed the angle. Sweeney had a further chance but fired just over. Into the last ten minutes and Totton continued to keep things tight and well organised at the back as Street threw what they could at them in search of that all-important equaliser. But it didn’t materialise on the night with Weeks and Dan Gain getting in great blocking tackles to protect their goal effectively. Meanwhile on a Millers raid a shot from Kana’Ah flashed across the goal. Street finished the game with ten players as Pollard lunged in from behind and knee high and nowhere near the ball to foul Sanger. It was probably one of the most reckless fouls seen so far this season and, despite players trying to provide their own views, referee Wright had little option but to produce his red card. Six minutes stoppage time came but Totton & Eling saw the game out and a trip to Cowes in Round 3. There really is a fine ‘in it together’ spirit at Millers Park now, something not always evident from their teams of the past. Finally, we often read of the half-time cake in reports and note must be made that the ‘sub host’ here tonight did an excellent job in serving the finest tea and the highest quality brand of custard creams!! FT 1-0 John Gorman writes ALTON 1-1 HYTHE & DIBDEN THIS was a game between two sides both harbouring promotion hopes at this early stage of the season that was very enjoyable, full of good football and attacking intention and played in good spirit. All it lacked was goals – on the night both defences were on top and an indication of same is that both goals came from the penalty spot. On an evening when it was always going to rain at some stage it was the visitors who made much the brighter start with Cain Prentice inches away from connecting with a cross at the far post and a Sam Woodward effort clipping the top of the bar. Home keeper Justin Courtnage just beat Prentice to a through ball before Alton bounced back with Ellis Grant saving well in a crowded area following a free kick. The keeper then did even better in beating away a twenty yard drive from George Bowerman before Christos Papakonstantinou had a shot equally well saved at the other end following a quickly taken free kick. The rain then arrived with a vengeance midway through the half but fortunately for all did not stay very long. Alton’s Jamie Rhodes, whose marauding runs from full back were a constant threat, saw a cross deflected wide before his side took the lead after twenty six minutes. Grant came to the edge of his area to meet a through ball and decided to play the ball with his feet rather than his hands but simply crashed into the advancing forward inches inside the line. There were few complaints over the penalty decision and Phil MOORE drove the spot kick high into the net. This was just reward for a spell of pressure from the home side but also appeared to galvanise the visitors with Papakonstantinou firing into the side netting after a good run, Sam Floyd shaving the post with a header from a corner and Woodward only inches too high from distance. At the other end another Rhodes run provided a shooting chance for Bowerman and Jack Bicknell was blocked in the act of shooting before the half ended with Jo Tessem coolly nodding the ball back to his goalkeeper in a crowded area. Class will out ! HT 1-0 As at the start it was Hythe who were quicker into their stride on the re-start with Alton surviving a scramble in their six yard box and a superb cross from Mig Dark headed over by Prentice who looked slightly off balance. Their reward came quickly in the shape of the second spot kick of the evening when Floyd was bundled over with DARK making no mistake with the kick. A lung busting run by Rhodes was eventually stopped by weight of numbers and when Bicknell showed neat control and supplied a cross from the other flank it was missed by one and all. Dark saw a shot well saved and Woodward found the side netting before Alton completely wasted a free kick in a very dangerous position – the ball flying high over the bar. Grant’s goalkeeping sometimes has a touch of eccentricity about

Page 8: #14 · 2019-10-06 · Sunday, 06 October 2019 Page 1 of 28 SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 14 HELLO AND WELCOME TO THE LATEST EDITION OF YOUR NEWSLETTER If you

it as when he found himself nearer the centre circle than his goal line and ballooned the ball vertically some sixty foot in the air. Rhodes intercepted a clearance and found Bicknell in space but the winger seemed undecided as to whether to cross the ball or go for goal and it rolled harmlessly wide for a goal kick. Grant showed the other side of his skills by going full length to claw the ball away and the home side missed a chance from a two on one situation by falling foul of the offside flag. As the clock ticked past the ninety minute mark Hythe nearly broke the deadlock with a Tom Switzer header from a Tessem free kick rebounding to safety off the post before one more save from Grant ensured the points were shared. A fair result to an enjoyable game that was a credit to both sides and a game in which referee Copping contributed fully. He spoke to the players, largely kept his cards in his pocket and was always in control – but eight minutes stoppage time ? FT 1-1

MIDWEEK ROUNDUP

Sydenhams League and Cup matches were very much to the fore in the midweek fixtures this week with only one match in an “outside” Competition. In the sole League Cup match an early own goal gave Totton & Eling victory over Andover New Street at Millers Park and earned a trip across to Cowes Sports in the next round. Eight Premier Division games with the results going largely to form except at Fiveheads Park where Horndean went down 4-0 to Fleet Town. Four different scorers for the winners, including the newly signed and much travelled Paul Coventry, and a win that takes the North Hampshire Club up to fifteenth place in the table. Not often The Deans suffer a scoreline such as that at home. Alresford returned to winning ways and moved three points clear at the top of the table with a 3-1 defeat of Tadley, all the goals coming in the second half, and there was a similar scoreline at Bashley where the home side bounced back after three defeats, beating Hamworthy United with two goals for Harry McGrath. A sixth consecutive game without a win for the visitors who must be eagerly looking forward to a return to home soil – “soil” of course in a manner of speaking. Amesbury went down again at home, this time 3-1 to AFC Stoneham who retained their place in the top four, and there was a fourth 3-1 result of the evening at Shaftesbury where the home side gained three welcome points at Bournemouth’s expense and consigned the Poppies to the bottom three. The largest attendance of the evening was at the New Forest derby at Brockenhurst where Micky Finch put Lymington two up at the break only for Brockenhurst to take the points with three goals in the second half, two from Freddie Bullard. Christchurch secured their first home win of the campaign, a very late goal giving them a best of five victory over Portland and Hamble Club made it four wins in a row by defeating Fareham two one with John McKie on the scoresheet again. One game on Wednesday with AFC Portchester moving in to third place in the table after beating bottom Club Solent University by five goals to two helped by a hat trick from Dan Wooden. Three games in Division One and though there was a top of the table clash between Alton and Hythe & Dibden, first mention has to go to Whitchurch for their 4-1 win at Romsey. Not many sides score four at the Bypass ground and two goals apiece from Declan Shuttleworth and Lloyd Thompson moved the visitors to the dizzy heights of third in the table. The aforementioned clash at Anstey saw the points shared in an entertaining one all draw with both goals coming from the penalty spot. That result meant that Downton’s 3-2 win over Follands at Wick Lane took them back to the top of the table with Tom Moseley among the home scorers and Connor Rowe scoring twice in a much improved display by the visitors. The “outside” Cup match was at Petersfield where the home side defeated Hampshire Premier League side Fleetlands 4-1 in the Portsmouth Senior Cup. Given the weather and the fact that there were a handful of afternoon pitch inspections it was good to see all the scheduled fixtures completed and our thanks to those whose hard work made that possible.

NON LEAGUE DAY

As you may be aware, Prostate Cancer UK is once again the proud official charity partner of Non-League Day (12 October 2019) and they're calling on clubs across the land to fundraise on their match day and raise awareness of a disease killing one man every 45 minutes. They’d love to secure your support to help them spread the word to recruit clubs in our league. Clubs who registered by Friday 4th October, should be getting, if they’ve not already received one, a fundraising pack including:

• A collection box & bucket wraps

• A box of pin badges

• Know your prostate pocket guides

• Awareness posters

• Branded banner

• Communication package (Web copy, Programme ad, and Social Media Toolkit)

This is not compulsory, but we ask that all clubs playing at home host consider a match day collection and are encouraged to hold an additional fundraiser, such as a 50/50 raffle or half time fan event, e.g. cross-bar challenge. You can also find more fundraising ideas, hints and tips by visiting www.prostatecanceruk.org/nonleagueday. Prostate Cancer Facts:

• Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. 44,000 men are diagnosed each year in the UK, that’s1 in 8, and 1 in 4 for black men.

• It kills one man every 45 minutes. That’s two between kick-off and the final whistle.

• In 2019, 11,000 men will die from this disease. We believe men deserve better.

• You are making a lifesaving difference, helping to provide better diagnosis, better treatment and better support to the men and their families facing prostate cancer today.

FA VASE FIRST ROUND PROPER

The draw for the above was covered briefly in a recent Newsletter, but a more detailed look at same with

the emphasis on the Clubs to be faced by Sydenhams League sides next Saturday. Surprisingly the draw

threw up only one all-Sydenhams tie and twelve involving opposition from other Leagues, primarily the

Western and the Hellenic, and eight of the latter involve our Clubs playing away from home.

RAYNES PARK VALE v HORNDEAN [Best Vase performance 3rd Round 2012/13 and 2017/18]

Raynes Park Vale are based in the Merton District of South West London and joined the Combined Counties

League in 1995, gaining promotion to the Premier Division in 2003/04. They have finished fifth in each of

the last two seasons and currently lie in 17th place. This is the fourth time they have reached this stage of

the Vase – they have never progressed any further – and have only twice previously faced a Sydenhams

side, losing to BAT Sports in 2002 and AFC Totton in 2005.

BRADFORD TOWN v LYMINGTON TOWN [Best Vase performance 4th Round 2007/08]

Bradford on Avon is a long goal kick from Trowbridge and Bradford Town have been in the Premier Division

of the Western League since 2014/15, have never finished lower than eighth, and at this early stage of the

current season they are in second place. They have a strong Vase pedigree and reached the Fifth Round in

2017/18 and have beaten Team Solent, Newport and Brockenhurst in recent seasons.

CULLOMPTON RANGERS v AFC PORTCHESTER [Best Vase performance 3rd Round

2013/14 and 2014/15]

Cullompton is in Devon, some thirteen miles north east of Exeter, and its Football

Club play in the Step 6 South West Peninsula Premier East Division, with a best

placing of eighth and are at present in 10th spot. They have reached the Second

Round Proper of the Vase on three occasions and the two Clubs met in the

2017/18 Competition when the Devon side won by the odd goal in five.

BITTON v TADLEY CALLEVA [Best Vase performance 3rd Round 2015/16]

Bitton have been members of the Western League Premier Division since

2004/05, finished third in the table last season and lie in 5th place as this is

written. They are another Club with a strong record in the Vase having twice

reached the fifth round. Bitton itself is on the very Southern edge of the County of

Gloucestershire and to the east of Bristol.

LONGLEVENS v COWES SPORTS [Best Vase performance 5th Round 1999/00]

Cowes face a trip to the outskirts of Gloucester and a Club who joined the Hellenic League as recently as

2014/15 and won promotion to the Premier Division at the first attempt. They currently sit in seventh

position and this is only their fifth season in the Vase. They have reached the first round on two previous

occasions – have only met and tasted defeat against a Sydenhams League once in this competition, AFC

Stoneham in 2016.

BISHOPS CLEEVE v BROCKENHURST [Best Vase performance 5th Round 1974/75]

Bishops Cleeve are long time members of the Hellenic League apart from twelve seasons in the Southern

League from which they were relegated two seasons ago. They finished fourth last season and are in

second place as this is written. They have reached the third round of the Vase once and their ground is in a

lovely setting very adjacent to Cheltenham Racecourse.

EXMOUTH TOWN v PORTLAND UNITED [Best Vase performance 2nd Round 2001/02 and 2016/17]

Portland face, by their standards, a short trip along the Jurassic Coast to meet Exmouth Town, currently in

ninth place in their first season in the Western League since 2005/06, having been promoted from the

South West Peninsula League. They reached the two legged Semi Final back in 1984/85 going out by the

odd goal in seven on aggregate against Fleetwood Town, but more recently in 2016/17 they reached the 5th

Round. They’ve met Blackfield & Langley twice in recent seasons, with one win and one defeat.

Four ties where our Clubs have home advantage.

CHRISTCHURCH [Best Vase performance 5th Round 2008/09] v BRIMSCOMBE & THRUPP

Brimscombe and Thrupp are two villages near Cirencester with a ground that is a natural amphitheatre in

the first named and the Football Club moved up from County Football to the Hellenic League in 2011/12.

Last season they were runners up in the Premier Division but things are not going so well this time round as

they are at present bottom of the table. They reached the third round of the Vase in 2015/16 before losing

to Moneyfields

NEWPORT (IOW) [Best Vase performance 5th Round 1991/92, 1992/93, 2012/13] v BRIDGWATER TOWN

A long spell in the Western League for the Somerset Club before promotion to the Southern League in

2007/08. Returned to the Western League through relegation in 2016/17 and occupy third place in the

table at this moment in time. Reached the Fifth Round of the Vase in 2004/05.

ROMSEY TOWN [Best performance in the Vase 3rd Round 1988/89] v PLYMOUTH PARKWAY

A Club very much on the up, Parkway spent seven seasons in the South West Peninsula League before

winning the title and gaining a place in the Western League and immediately claimed second place in their

inaugural season 2018/19. Currently they are one place better, leading the table by a single point and have

scored 34 goals in eight games. Reached the Fourth Round of the Vase in 2009/10 and have beaten

Blackfield & Langley twice in recent seasons.

DOWNTON [Best performance in the Vase 3rd Round 2012/13] v THORNBURY TOWN

Thornbury have perhaps punched above their weight to reach this stage of the Competition as this is only

their second season in the Hellenic League (West) after moving up from Gloucestershire County football

but seem to have settled in reasonably sitting in 6th spot. This is their first season in the Vase and Thornbury

itself is situated some twelve miles north of Bristol.

And finally one all-Wessex tie that pairs BOURNEMOUTH with PETERSFIELD TOWN

BOURNEMOUTH’s best performance in the Vase - Last eight in 2011/12

PETERSFIELD’s best performance in the Vase – 2nd Round 1994/95

Good luck to all and thirteen Sydenhams Clubs in the next round !

WEEKEND MATCH REPORTS

Roger Allen writes BASHLEY 3-2 AFC STONEHAM THIS was an entertaining game between two closely matched sides. Stoneham have probably exceeded their own expectations this season whilst Bashley are the model of inconsistency. So one of those matches that was too close to call. The first half hour was a battle of attrition with neither side able to assert themselves from the point of view of possession or territory. However Bashley took a lead in the 13th minute when a low shot by Lewis ROSS deceived Thomas Parker-Trott in the Stoneham goal.

Page 22: #14 · 2019-10-06 · Sunday, 06 October 2019 Page 1 of 28 SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 14 HELLO AND WELCOME TO THE LATEST EDITION OF YOUR NEWSLETTER If you

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 14

On the half hour, the game opened up and there was a string of chances before half time. The first came when Alex Welch for the visitors fed Callum Laycock but his shot went wide. Then Chris Manning for Stoneham had a header that was deflected wide at the expense of a corner from which Ben Clarke headed over with their clearest chance so far. Then it was Bashley's turn as Connor Whiteley fed Ross whose low shot was palmed away by Parker-Trott. On 42 minutes Bashley extended their lead. Harry McGrath had a low cross shot that was going wide but lurking on the far post was Harry BUNCE who turned the ball home from close range. It was interesting talking to both of the team's officials at half time who thought that their opponents had had the better of the first half. From a neutral perspective it was fairly even, it was just that Bashley had taken their chances. HT 2-0 Stoneham definitely started the stronger in the 2nd period with a Manning free kick going wide and a Matt Bainbridge effort being touched over by Harry Gravett, making an impressive debut in the home goal. On 57 minutes Stoneham were back in the game as LAYCOCK scored with a low cross shot from just inside the penalty area. Stoneham continued to make chances and Bainbridge headed over just after the hour. A Stoneham equaliser looked more likely than a Bashley goal at this stage but on 71 minutes Bashley doubled their lead. ROSS benefited from a one/two on the edge of the penalty area before drilling a low shot past Parker-Trott. By now the game was end to end and, from a free kick, Ben Clarke headed over for Stoneham and Laycock had a shot tipped over by Gravett. Once again Stoneham fought back and scored a second on 84 minutes as Brad Strickland was adjudged to have fouled Laycock. MANNING scored low to the keeper's left from the penalty spot. This spurred Stoneham on to find the equaliser but the best chance of the remaining time fell to Bashley when Bunce had a shot blocked by a defender. The two teams do it all again on Tuesday in the Southampton Senior Cup and it will be a good watch if this was anything to go by. FT 3-2

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

In the Somerset Senior Cup Westland Sports came from behind to win 5-03 against Westfield. In Dorset, the Senior Trophy took precedence leaving just two League games played Bournemouth Sports Parley won a best of five game at Bridport Reserves after trailing at the interval and Holt United won 1-0 at Gillingham Town. Holders Merley Cobham Sports started their defence of the Trophy with an emphatic 8-2 win at Corfe Castle, despite being behind at the half. Hamworthy Recreation won 3-0 at Wareham Rangers to go through and Balti Sports won by the odd goal in five at Dorchester Sports to progress as did Portland Reserves who triumphed in their derby clash at Chickerell United. The equivalent in Hampshire saw Bush Hill scoring two without reply at Bembridge and also on the Isle of Wight, Infinity hit Sandown for six, but the hosts also found the net three times, Fleetlands won their clash at home against Paulsgrove by the odd goal in three. In Wiltshire the Senior League saw Wroughton maintain top spot courtesy of a 3-0 win at Shrewton United, Purton in second spot also bagged the points, with a 5-3 win over visitors Kintbury Rangers. The main interest in the Southern League was in the FA Emirates Cup 3rd Qualifying Round. Two of our former members bowed out to visitors from Kent, Blackfield & Langley went down at Gang Warily 4-1 to Dartford whilst Margate also hit four at Salisbury who went one better than the Waterside club, with two goals. On the other side of the coin Poole Town move into the 4th Qualifying Round with a 2-0 win at Tooting & Mitcham United. In Division 1 South, the derby fixture at Sholing saw visitors Winchester City win by the odd goal in three. Dan Mason notching for the Boatmen, and finally in this section this week- in the Premier Division Wimborne Town’s Joe Byrne was on target but hosts Merthyr Town hit three to claim the points.

WEEK TEN ROUND UP

he season moves in to October with thoughts of Winter beginning to take root but no change at the top of the Premier Division as the Alresford bandwagon rolls on, while the promotion contenders in the First Division continue to jostle for position with the lead changing hands again from seven days

previously. Alresford travelled to Bournemouth and added three more points to their tally with a 4-2 victory that keeps them five points clear, whist for the home side it was a fifth consecutive defeat. Brockenhurst remain in second place after two Will Tickle goals helped them to a three all draw at Horndean in front of what was a disappointingly low attendance for a game between two of the Division’s leading Clubs. AFC Portchester recorded their fifth win in a row, and a good one at that, in winning 4-3 at Lymington. Steve Ramsey converted two penalties for the visitors but sympathy for home striker Sam House who scored a hat trick but finished on the losing side. Hamble Club continued their steady rise up the table with a two goal victory at Cowes but AFC Stoneham went own by the odd goal in five at Bashley, their first away defeat of the season. Lewis Ross scored two of the home side’s goals. Another two goal man was Christchurch’s Josh Kirkham as the Hurn Bridge side continued their current good run with a 3-1 success at Fareham and Ashton Leigh matched that in Baffins Milton Rovers 3-2 win over Solent University, a result that leaves the latter still in bottom place in the table. Fleet Town continued to show that they have found their feet by defeating Shaftesbury 2-0; the Dorset side have now lost four out of five on the road. There was a first home defeat of the season for Tadley as Hamworthy ended a long losing run, and welcomed new Manager Tim Sills, with a 3-1 win at Barlows Park helped by two goals from Cameron Beard. And the highest saved to last. Over recent seasons Amesbury have always encountered problems when the away fixture at Portland comes up and it was no different this time as Portland racked up twelve goals and conceded only two in reply. There were four goals for Jamie Symes, a hat trick for Ben Morris and two from Ryan McKechnie in what must be the highest score in the Premier Division for many seasons. Not for the first time recently the top game in Division One was at Hythe with the home side overcoming Downton by four goals to two to regain the leadership. It was only the visitors second defeat of the season and they did not help their cause by conceding two own goals. Alton moved in to third spot with a best of five goals win over New Milton at Anstey with Jack Cooper scoring both the Linnets goals as they continue to seek their first win of the campaign. Goals at Burnaby Road as US Portsmouth halted Whitchurch’s winning run with a 4-2 victory. Four different scorers for the winners and Declan Shuttleworth on target again for the Jamboys. Bemerton Heath are proving difficult to defeat on their own ground and scored three without reply against Totton & Eling while there were goals galore at the Aliport Arena. Verwood were five up at the break with a hat trick from Nathan Gray and two from Lee Vint before Fawley AFC scored three in the second half to make the scoreline respectable from their viewpoint. Petersfield, enjoying their best run for a long while, notched their fourth successive away win with an impressive two goal success at Newport and Romsey bounced back from their midweek defeat by ending Laverstock & Ford’s three match winning run with a 2-1 victory at the Bypass ground. Going in to yesterday’s fixtures Follands had only gained one point from their last eight matches and East Cowes Vics one from their last six so a draw was always on the cards and so it proved with four goals shared on the day, Jimmi Burton scoring twice for the visitors. Ringwood ended a run of six defeats with a one all draw with Andover Town but as with the Premier Division the best on the day is saved to last. Andover New Street, by a mixture of accident and design, fielded their usual midfield duo of Callum Sweeney and Jazz Beavis “up front” and beat Pewsey Vale 5-0 with Beavis claiming the day’s individual highlight by scoring all five. The result leaves the Wiltshire side still without a win and they have now conceded twenty seven goals in five away matches. So Alresford and Hythe & Dibden lead the way into October though next Saturday’s League programme will be truncated as the FA Vase comes in to play again. Thanks to all for the attendances and scorers.
